I love calling a bicycle "Drahtesel" instead of "Fahrrad" in german, just to be extra weird.

Which translates to "wire donkey" and I wonder who came up with that.

Didn't find how old that word is, but I found "Stahlross" as in "steel horse". Not the main word for horse, that is "Pferd", but either describing an elegant horse or only used in southgermany, austria or switzerland. This also changes the plural. To either "Rosse" or "Rösser". In this case the plural would be "Stahlrösser" because no one is refering to a bike like an elegant horse.
