Sega Mega Drive - After Burner II
Title: After Burner II / アフターバーナーII
Developer/Publisher: Dempa Micomsoft
Release date: 23 March 1990
Catalogue No.: T-17013
Genre: Shooting
Tumblr media
Surely the Mega Drive was powerful enough to produce a better port than this by 1990 but it's not a bad game overall and still plays like it should. Heck, the Famicom and PC Engine Hucard versions are impressive by comparison. The runway landing refill stations are missing in this version of the game; however, they were in the Spectrum version. Quite odd. At least the music has been well done in this version. Still, it was definitely the most powerful version of After Burner II to be released outside of Japan until the Sega 32X version titled After Burner Complete arrived. I say outside of Japan because there were also FM Towns and Sharp X68000 versions, with the FM Towns boasting its awesome arranged CD soundtrack. The Sega Saturn version would then trounce all these other versions until the Dreamcast version and later ports to modern consoles. This version of After Burner II was released as a showpiece for the XE-1 AP controller, which explains why Dempa made this conversion. Dempa are the same ones behind many awesome Sharp X68000 arcade conversions, and I believe the PC Engine Hucard version of Space Harrier was programmed by them.

F-35 fighters leave the Middle East after deployment to deter Iran and Russia
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 10/07/2023 - 14:44 in Military, War Zones
The U.S. Air Force F-35 Lightning II stealth fighters, sent to the Middle East to prevent Iranian aggression in the Persian Gulf and react to Russian intimidation in the Syrian skies, have left the region, according to service officials.
"What the F-35s did was give us additional capacity," said the commander of the Air Force Central (AFCENT), Lieutenant General Alexus G. Grynkewich, to reporters on October 4 at a Defense Writers Group event.
The deployment was completed in late September, according to the 388ª Fighter Wing at Hill Air Base, Utah. All aircraft have left the Middle East and are "in transit home," according to a spokesman for the 388th Fighter Wing.
Operating as the 421º Air Expeditionary Squadron, the F-35 were first deployed on July 26, when fifth-generation fighters were rushed to the region by the Pentagon after Iranian attacks on commercial ships around the Strait of Hormuz, the strategic bottleneck between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, through which 20% of the world's oil flows.
Additional U.S. Navy ships, led by the Bataan Amphibious Ready Group with thousands of Marines, followed the F-35. The amphibious assault ship USS Bataan brought more air power to the region with a squadron of short or vertical takeoff and landing Harriers (V/STOL).
The US still has the F-16 and A-10 in the region. However, the stealthy F-35 provided more advanced capabilities.
Tumblr media
The F-35 allowed the U.S. to “continue to carry out the missions we were carrying out in Iraq and Syria and elsewhere in the region, and to increase what we were doing in support of the Navy, basically doing air combat patrols over the Strait of Hormuz,” said Grynkewich, who added that the Navy's detachment was particularly important.
“This increase in surface ships combined with our air power has dissuaded Iran from taking any action against maritime transport,” he said.
In addition to their mission in the Gulf, the F-35 were useful in discouraging Russian warplanes from chasing American aircraft in Syria. The F-35 also joined the U.S. allies in Syria, including flying with French Rafale fighters.
Russia's aggressive tactics emerged as a major concern in July, when Russian fighters launched flags that damaged U.S. MQ-9 drones that were carrying out missions against Islamic State militants.
After the U.S. released the video of Russian harassment and deployed the F-35, Russia moderated its tactics and became less aggressive.
"They still fly in airspace, but not directly above our forces, so I welcome this change in behavior," Grynkewich said. "With the flags being released on our MQ-9, we no longer see this behavior."
Tumblr media
The U.S. military presence in the region is very modest compared to the years when Americans fought in Iraq and Afghanistan. But U.S. air operations over Syria were also reinforced by coalition partners, including the French and British.
“We are still at risk of terrorist attacks in our capitals or on our lands,” General Stéphane Mille, head of the French Air and Space Force, told journalists in September. "We are flying together."
Not all the challenges that the U.S. has faced come from opponents. Turkey, also a member of NATO, has been attacking Kurdish groups in northern Syria, which is responsible for a bomb attack in the capital Ankara on October 1, in operations that may put American troops at risk.
On the morning of October 5, a Turkish drone hit targets within a restrictive operating zone (ROZ) declared by the U.S. military, according to the Pentagon. The attacks reached one kilometer from U.S. forces, forcing them to protect themselves in bunkers.
When a Turkish drone returned to the area about four hours later and headed for U.S. forces, it was shot down by a U.S. F-16 half a kilometer away from U.S. personnel in an act of self-defense, according to U.S. authorities.
On October 6, the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs minimized the episode in a statement, saying that its drone “was lost due to different technical evaluations in the conflict resolution mechanism with third parties”.
Tumblr media
The biggest concern, however, remains Iran. Despite the departure of the F-35, which Grynkewich observed has always been planned to be “temporary”, the U.S. is prepared to flex forces for the region.
“My opinion is that the deterrence is temporal,” Grynkewich said of Iran. “We have increased strength in response to a specific threat. This shows the American commitment to the region. This shows that our American strategy has been, with our posture being less than before, we demonstrate the commitment to bring strength to great exercises for guarantee purposes or when a threat required it. And we certainly did that in this case."

Bastian Muñoz - 48 - He/Him - Pedro Pascal FC
Tumblr media
CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED p*rnstar, Bastian Muñoz. Aged 48 now, he certainly didn't think he'd still be doing this shit for money, but honestly it was too good to turn down. Absolute goofball who is secretly a sage. He's been through enough to have an answer for nearly any question as long as history or english aren't involved. Sweet southern boy with a tendancy towards being called daddy (even though he really longs to be a pillow princess).
Auggie Bell - 26 - He/Him - Joe Keery FC
Tumblr media
FAMILY DISAPPOINTMENT, Auggie Bell was born to two scientist moms who have travelled the world to continue their studies. August hardly graduated high school in New Jersey. Try as he might, he could never meet his parents potential. Shitty hipster barista. Famous bassist wanna be. 80s final girl type PTSD. Honestly, Auggie is just happy to be alive, and be able to flirt. As long as his face card doesn't decline, he's good.
Joanne Sheridan - 24 - She/Her - Zendaya FC
Tumblr media
CAREER CRIMINAL but with the thickest cajun accent you've ever heard. Jo's been making a life for herself all on her own since she ran away from home as a teen. She's gotten herself pretty far just by thieving and killing. She has a knack for aligning herself with likeminded folk, and can follow instructions real well if there's a pay out.
Peter Caldwell - 64 - He/Him - Kyle MacLachlan FC
Tumblr media
METALHEAD. Peter's been around the metal scene since its dawn. He spent years travelling and headbanging, learning all that he could not only about rock, but all genres. When he finally decided to settle down he headed back to the states and opened up a record shop. No one really knew where he got the money from or how it stays open, but he's happy to provide a safe space for the community.
Samar Arya - 2,000+ - He/Him - Dev Patel FC
Tumblr media
THE ANCIENT ONE. Samar Arya has been around since the beginning of time. Or at least it is beginning to feel that way. One of the very first of his kind. He has seen mofre than any intelligent life form should ever suffer through. Frequently described as a grumpy old man, the vampire does his best to hide his hopelessly romantic true self.
Benedict Osbourne - 25 - He/Him (Transman)- Joe Quinn FC
Tumblr media
THE DUNGEON MASTER. Your usual nerdy DnD youtuber. Though he started out small with a few friends and a camera, he is now constantly asked to conventions, and has even crossed over into the world of gaming streams. A household name for weirdos.
Kali Gonzalez - 25 - She/Her - Alexa Demie FC
Tumblr media
TATTOO ARTIST. Witchy and crystal loving, Kali usually smells like incense. She's quite laid back but she absolutely loves with her entire heart. However that doesn't mean she hasn't gotten into a fight or two. She knows she's hot and doesn't need anyone to remind her, her ego is big enough. Does require men to do a tarot reading before she sleeps with them, but it's okay because she sorta prefers ladies anyway.
Daisy Davis - 27 - She/Her - Laura Harrier FC
Tumblr media
THE OPTIMIST. People usually believed Daisy was stupid. She was bubbly, sweet, and would help anyone who needed help. Yet what she may have lacked in so called 'street smarts' she surely made up for in her knowledge of language. She's a bit to comfortable living off of her wealthy parents money, but if she ever wanted a job, he ability to speak 10 different languages would surely get her one. In her free time she enjoys translating various poetry.
Lilla Jean Grace - 27 - She/Her - Suki Waterhouse FC
Tumblr media
STRIPPER WITH A HEART OF GOLD. Lilla always had big dreams of making it out of Minnesota. Unfortunately those dreams haven't proven to be realistic just yet. She grew up constantly being told she was an idiot, and felt she had proven that by failing out of high school. Yet she's grown to learn that she's plenty emotionally smart. She can take care of herself, so what else matters?
Jude Ofori - 36 - He/Him - Yahya Abdul-Mateen II FC
Tumblr media
PEDIATRICIAN, TOTAL ASSHOLE. Jude works too much and too hard to worry about other people's feelings. Cold. Unfeeling. Words plenty of his ex husbands and wives had thrown around, but he never took offense. Deeply insecure, and constantly looking for validation. The man is surely going to crumble at some point. Just not today.
Frankie Slater - 35 - She/They - Ritu Arya FC
Tumblr media
THE EXHAUSTED ROCKSTAR. The whole touring thing was fun for the first ten years Then it became tedious. She'd spent her entire twenties in and out of rehabs, and on the cover of magazines scantaly clad or puking on herself. With three divorces under her belt by thirty Frankie has finally gotten her shit together. Maybe. At least she's been clean for a year, that's worth something right?
Hayden Altman - 39 - He/Him - Andrew Garfield FC
Tumblr media
PARANOID. Writing about true crime isn't for the weak-hearted, so Hayden isn't sure why he got into it in the first place. Probably some point when he was getting a dual degree in pyschology and writing, or maybe the minor in criminology. He had always been deeply obsessed with research and finding as much information as possible. Any time he questions why he ruins his sanity for it, the checks come in, or detectives reach out for help and he realizes it is worth it.
Nina Otieno - 39 - She/Her - Lupita Nyong'o FC
Tumblr media
THE FALLEN BALLERINA. Raised in France, Nina was raised within her mother's ballet studio, wearing point shoes practically as soon as she could stand up. She loved dance, she viewed it as the most sacred out of all of the arts, and dedicated her life to it. There was no other option but for her to be a performer, and she did not disappoint. By the time she was a teenager she travelled with a touring group across Europe. In her mid twenties, she'd finally made a name and living for herself when it all fell apart. A tale as old as time. One bad fall, and she would never be able to dance the same again. She's found purpose in being a teacher. She figures the least she can do is bring proper Parisian Ballet to Americans.

A Gamer’s Journey: The Definitive History of Shenmue
This documentary is now up on Amazon Prime and I couldn’t recommend it more.
If you’ve ever played the original game and it’s sequels, then this documentary really is a trip down memory lane.
It starts at the very beginning, and covers Sega’s beginnings in the arcade/console market and the pioneering work of Shenmue’s creator Yu Suzuki.
I have to admit, I didn’t realise just how influential that man had been historically on the video game and arcade scene.  He gave the world Hang On, Space Harrier, Virtua Fighter and eventually…Shenmue!
The documentary was clearly made with a lot of passion, by people who care deeply about their Shenmue gaming experience and it really shows.
This isn’t some naff, cheaply put together fan project, but a real deep dive into a truly unique game with insights from all the staff who were involved in it’s creation.  I also really enjoyed the sections with fans who effectively convey just how much this game means to them.
Whilst I can’t claim to be a mega fan, I absolutely loved the original game.  It’s hard to explain just how mind blowingly different it was from anything else on the market at that time, the little nuances and the NPC schedules still continue to wow me to this day, it truly was ahead of its time.
Those back roads and junctions of Dobuita, Japan are almost burnt into my memory, I remember the faces of the villagers and the shop signs so clearly even 20 years later. I still often find myself quoting the game’s dialogue from time to time, which I think says a lot about just how much an impression it left on me.
The thing is, you don’t actually do a lot in this game.  You pretty much just walk around talking to people and interacting with things, there’s the odd fight and QTE experience but 90% of the game is just casually trotting around asking questions, whilst trying to figure out clues as to the whereabouts of the man that killed your father…but I loved it.
Yet, Shenmue wasn’t for everyone, and whilst reviewed well, it was classed as a financial failure. The series was cancelled by Sega after Shenmue II and fans were left on a cliff-hanger for over 20 years only to be resurrected by a Kickstarter campaign.
If you’ve ever played it then I’d highly recommend this doc.  It’s so well made and in depth and captures the spirit of the game perfectly.

A journey through Sega's marketing machine with the power of the cassette
Tumblr media
I know, I know, a bit of a wild stretch to start this blog off without some proper introduction. Hi. I'm archonedd / Nobusuke, and I'm an avid (at the time of publication) 23 year old Sega (and Sonic) nut.
After mercilessly mocking cassettes as some old fad throughout the elementary and high school years as the world started gravitating more and more towards online streaming, I picked up a cassette player in early 2017 no doubt due to the hype surrounding a cassette that Star-Lord was seen playing on repeat on one of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. Along with said cassette player, came a Type 1 cassette tape to play. It changed my music experience in ways I'd never imagined, and I even tried substituting my CD-based boombox with one of these and needless to say the equipment left a lot to be desired.
It turns out that modern cassette players just don't have the quality mechanisms that legacy cassette decks used to have, and the number of new cassette-enabled devices seem to be dwindling globally as time goes on. Not to mention, most people's recollections of cassettes seems to border towards "listening to a crappy stream from the car's radio" to "only listening to a film's vision of what cassettes or any other vintage audio format used to sound like".
It sure took a YouTube channel like Techmoan and Retro Core AV as well as several others where my outlook on cassettes (and several vintage audio formats) began to change a little as I learned more about the different types of cassettes, and how cassettes can sound a lot like or even close to a properly mastered CD if given the right budget and expectations. So imagine my surprise when I heard almost 5 years later that Sega even started using distributing cassettes dubbed "Sega Forever Volume 1". My initial reaction was - "Wait a minute. What??"
What is this tape about?
Basically the idea of this was to serve as a promotional item sent out to various YouTubers and Sega-centric content creators prior to the launch of the "SEGA Forever" service on mobile devices. The tracks on these are basically taken from popular arcade and Mega Drive/Genesis titles, some of which are still remembered to this day.
The most remembered ones include the arcade BGM to Space Harrier and Outrun, as well as those from Mega Drive standout classics like Phantasy Star 2, Shining Force 2, and even Vectorman (a Blue Sky Software effort) gets a special shoutout though only Terraport from that game gets represented. Overall, there are 12 songs spread into two sides of six.
The strange thing is some of the Sega arcade titles even got console ports on non-Sega systems usually through third parties like Sunsoft and NEC Avenue.
Here is the complete tracklist in case you may not remember.
Tumblr media
For the lucky 512 or so content creators lucky enough to receive this retro blast, the package even included a biro pen just in case your cassette player somehow "ate the tape" and you're on the task to spool the tape back in. You, know, like the old days where cassette enjoyers did it. I personally do not have such a strong nostalgic connection, but I just found it interesting to mention.
Tumblr media
What are the technical specifications?
There are four types of cassettes sold throughout the market during the continuing lifespan of these audio wonders.
Type 1 refers to a general cassette you are most likely to buy today. This is known as a "Ferric" tape.
Type 2 known as "Chrome" is a step up from Type 1. While it is a general step up from Type 1 tapes, in the end, quality Type I cassettes have higher midrange MOL than most Type II tapes, slow and gentle MOL roll-off at low frequencies, but less treble headroom than Type II.
Type 3 "Ferrichrome" doesn't really exist anymore as far as I can tell.
Type 4 is the supreme stuff. These are called "Metal" tapes. To play such a high-class tape, your deck or player would have to be rated for metal tape playback. Something that today's modern tapes aren't quite capable of playing now, or at least I don't think so.
It seems more likely that Sega Forever Volume 1 cassette is a Type 1 metal tape with no noise reduction to speak of. These days, Dolby noise reduction may be no more, but substitutes such as DDi Codec will be able to alleviate that.
Sega Forever....
Tumblr media
Let's talk about Sega Forever. Sega Forever was a then-new initiative to get its best retro games available for a mobile audience that's still going today. Very similar to what they are already doing with Sega Mega Drive Classics on multiplatform experiences via PC, PS4 and XBOX. This cassette was to coincide with the launch of the Sega Forever platform on smartphone on 21 June 2017, with the initial lineup being Altered Beast/Jyuohki, Comix Zone, Chameleon Kid, Sonic the Hedgehog 1 and Phantasy Star II.
Unfortunately it had a somewhat rocky launch. With the exception of the rebooted Sega Forever Sonic the Hedgehog mobile conversion handled by Stealth (the same guy that demoed what Sonic could look like on the GBA compared to the half-baked effort Sega of America pumped out in 2006), almost the entirety of the selection ran poorly despite modern hardware enhancements. It seemed to be a middleware problem as Sega reportedly failed to reach an agreement with the people behind the Retroarch project, instead settling for a Unity-based emulation solution.
Since then, Sega have upped the quality of the emulation for the smartphones of our time.

are there any fantasy consoles you're particularly fond of? or any that you think deserve more recognition? (a fantasy console is a modern (almost always) emulator for a fictional game console, well known examples include the pico-8 and liko-12. (here's a list of many: github.com/paladin-t/fantasy ) )
I'm not too familiar with fantasy consoles sadly 😅
My main experience with them just comes from playing PICO-8 games every now and then, and specially loving to replay Celeste Classic over and over again.
That said, a fantasy console series that DOES seem fairly interesting to me due to my love of the Mega Drive is M2's Gigadrive and Sega Mark V
The Gigadrive isn't that complex, but it's still fairly interesting as an enhanced Mega Drive. It's fully backwards compatible with Mega Drive stuff, and it mostly features enhancements related to displaying games in 3D, which makes sense since it was mainly developed for the 3DS ports of various Mega Drive games.
The Mark V on the other hand is a *big* change from the stock Mega Drive. It's still based on the Mega Drive's specs, but the most notable change is that it adds sprite scaling, similar to what Sega was doing on arcade cabinets like Space Harrier. That's what it's used for, actually! It's what the Genesis Mini 2 ports of Space Harrier and Space Harrier II run on! I haven't been able to get my hands on one, but it looks really fascinating! It's riddled with sprite flicker tho.... oh well....
