Space mission discovers 'bullet-like' winds shooting from a supermassive black hole

Researchers have discovered that ultra-fast wind surrounding a supermassive black hole is not smooth and continuous as previously assumed, but instead resembles a rapid-fire stream of gas "bullets."

The energy carried by these gas bullets is far greater than anticipated, offering new insights into how galaxies and their central black holes evolve together. The findings are published in the journal Nature.

The discovery was made by an international research team led by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), including Professor Christine Done from Durham University's Center for Extragalactic Astronomy.

Professor Done is one of only two European scientists supported by the European Space Agency to be part of the Japanese/U.S. X-ray Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission (XRISM), which is observing hot gas plasma wind blowing through galaxies.

A galactic puzzle

It is widely believed that every galaxy harbors a supermassive black hole at its center—objects with masses millions of times that of the sun.

Over cosmic time, these black holes and their host galaxies are thought to have evolved together in a tightly linked process.

Yet, because of the vast difference in their size and mass, the exact mechanisms behind this interaction remain unclear. Making the co-evolution of galaxies and black holes one of the most profound mysteries in modern astrophysics.

A crucial clue in solving this puzzle lies in the powerful gas flows—known as outflows or winds—that are expelled from the regions around black holes at extremely high speeds.

These winds are believed to influence co-evolution in two major ways: by regulating the growth of black holes through feedback that limits the inflow of matter, and by injecting vast amounts of energy into their host galaxies, potentially shutting down star formation.

Using the powerful spectroscopic capabilities of XRISM, the research team observed winds traveling at 20% to 30% of the speed of light from a supermassive black hole.

They discovered for the first time that these winds were made up of at least five distinct gas components, each moving at different velocities.

It suggests that gas is being intermittently ejected like a geyser or channeled through gaps in the surrounding interstellar medium, challenging long-standing theories of galaxy/black hole co-evolution.

The energy carried by these winds is more than 1,000 times greater than that of galactic-scale winds, dramatically altering our understanding of their role.

Such a breakthrough observation was only possible thanks to XRISM's exceptional capabilities in resolving the velocity structure of the winds.

UK Supreme Court Rules that the Legal Definition of a Woman Is Biological

The UK Supreme Court has ruled that in British Law the terms “woman” and “sex” are biological terms and do not include men who identify as “transgender.” The Court ruled that people with “transgender recognition certificates,” whatever that is, are excludable from biological single-sex spaces.

There are interesting aspects of this case that deserve comment. The case was brought by Scottish women’s rights groups against the Scottish government’s imposition of men who declare themselves to be women on biological women’s spaces. What has become of the Scottish people that they put in office a deranged, crazed government that forces biological women to accept men into their private spaces simply because the deranged man declares himself to be a woman? How did Scotland get a deranged government that in earlier times would have been hung off the nearest lamp posts, if not drawn and quartered in the public square? What has gone wrong with the Scottish people that they are unable to make intelligent and moral choices about those they empower to govern them?

We see a similar collapse of historic peoples in Ireland where the Irish people have put in power a government that forces ethnic Irish citizens who can barely put food on the table to support massive inflows of third-world immigrant invaders who are totally destroying the character and quality of Irish life. What has gone wrong with the Irish people that they put in power a government determined to destroy them?

Another interesting aspect is that the LGBT+ alliance is breaking up.  The Scottish lesbians took the side of the women’s rights groups against the alleged “transgenders.” A lesbian spokesperson said that lesbians were tired of being called “far-right bigots” for refusing to accept men into lesbian groups.

The UK Supreme Court has declared “transgender recognition certificates” to be legally meaningless. What precisely is, or was, a “transgender recognition certificate?” It was an effort to use a piece of paper to give authority and reality to a self-declared new sex that does not exist in nature, or if it does only as a freak abnormality.

The ecstatic wisdom ways have become part of us and we a part of them. Our chanting, our meditations, our prayers, our powers, felt, remembered and known are at the ever telling altar of the female body.

What has been so profound about the shift taking place for this collective is the indigenous wisdom of the women in relationship with the land, overflowing, being shared and received, ready to drink from our own cup the overflowing healing energy of our interwoven, past and present dimensions of expressing the sacred-seeing we are reclaiming and at the same time relinquishing. We are in a dichotomy of love making with the moonrise, the crystal waters, the divine in our lives when we least expect it and the shameful mistrust of the feminine is being eradicated, released one gathering at a time.

As I investigate this role deeper and deeper with curiosity and kindness I am filled with a mindbending Awe that takes my breath, that enables me to stand in a multiplicity of Ultimate Realities that we are now boundlessly opening for one another. The unbearable, in-exiable, beauty of pure love. It is our energetic duty to love as much as we possibly can, in every infinite moment, in every existential forgetting that ever took place, and to circle back to this.

Pause and reflection have been key themes the past few days and some deep feelings surfacing over the Full Moon in Scorpio.

For most full Moon phases, I have a clear sense of what needs to shift, what needs to purge and easily let go of something/anything quite rapidly.

This time round I really had to tune in, knowing that the cataclysmic shifts happening in 2022 are ringing to much more of a permanent tune and we are well into Bealtaine and the hawthorn, comfrey, dandelion blossoming and fast moving towards Summer Solstice.

We've had a powerful momentum since the start of this year at Avondale, building and restructuring what our community looks and feels like, with a new app and creating deeper connection in regular Circle with a committed and lit tribe. This has been something so close to our hearts for a long long time and the space is so dear to us now that I'm fully IN the expansion phase of growth and how it might look 6 months from now and what transformation is taking place for us as a collective.

The South Node in Scorpio and Uranus in Taurus have been highlighting hugely new potentials for all of us embodying the New Earth and some deep re-calibrating has been underway.

Releasing contracts around what we thought we were supposed to be showing up as, is a beautiful place to be. So many souls awakening and coming headlong into the space with fresh ideas, wisdom and perspectives has been heart warming and uplifting and so so supportive.

As we feel our way through, senses are heightened, awareness is navigated on a whole new heart plane as we really get to know one another we move into deeper transformative power. Gwenifar's Childhood Home

Spent some time in sims constructing Gwenifar's home as a child.

She didn't come from a super privileged background, just enough to be comfortable, so I wanted to show that.

So this is the exterior shot, with the garden her family had to help with costs/sell to other villagers to help with having some inflow of money. I headcanon it was an old barn her grandfather purchased and slowly put work into with the help of others in the village in exchange for him tutoring members of the village.

An interior shot of the main floor with a water closet, but I feel like an outhouse would be more accurate in game and that would've been a storage area. The room by the bathroom is her mother's and the other room was added onto the original structure for her grandparents/grandmother after her grandfather past. The main living area has a small kitchen, a little dining area, and a small living space.

Upstairs used to be a hay loft which was converted into two rooms, originally for Gwen's mother and her brother, but then used for the two girls. Gwen's sister is the one nearest the stairs, because she was frequently coming and going and Gwen's mom didn't want her to be disturbed with her sister's comings and goings, and with Gwen being ill, her mother wanted her closer to the stove to warm the upper floor. Gwen's bed is set by her window in a way she can look outside easily. She also had a collection of books strewn about her room, as well as a painting easel.

Now that Gwen's moved out and lives at the Open Hand Temple, and her grandmother passed away in recent years, and Gwen's sister is married and moved into her husband's family home, it's just her mother in the house now, but it will probably be passed onto either Gwen or one of Gwen's sister's children.

A 'surprisingly large' disk galaxy discovered in the early universe

by Swinburne University of Technology

An international team has discovered a giant spiral disk galaxy in the early cosmos which is three times larger than similar galaxies of the same epoch.

Galactic disks are flat, rotating structures filled with stars, gas, and dust that orbit the central core. The solar system orbits within the Milky Way's disk.

Swinburne University of Technology is the only Australian research institution behind this global investigation, published in Nature Astronomy, of the new James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and other telescope observations.

Swinburne galaxy spectral modeling expert Dr. Themiya Nanayakkara was a part of the international team that planned the JWST observations and discovered this exceptional galaxy.

"When and how galaxy disks form has been an outstanding puzzle," he says. "Seeing a massive, well-ordered disk galaxy when the universe was just 2.4 billion years old forces us to rethink how rapidly and efficiently nature can build cosmic structures.

"This galaxy not only challenges our existing models of early formation but also hints that dense, gas-rich environments may be the cradle for the universe's earliest giants."

These observations were targeted towards a specific region of the sky, which hosts a bright quasar at redshift z=3.25. The galaxy is seen as it was 11 billion years ago, or 2 billion years after the Big Bang.

Using the new JWST data from two onboard instruments, NIRCam and NIRSpec, Dr. Nanayakkara and the team identified galaxies within this over-dense structure and analyzed their redshifts, morphology, and kinematics, all of which are needed for the identification of galaxy disks.

"Our observations led to the serendipitous discovery of a surprisingly large disk galaxy in our field," he says. "This galaxy, dubbed the 'Big Wheel' has an optical radius of around 10 kpc, which is at least three times as large as what is predicted by current cosmological simulations."

Further kinematics analysis based on the NIRSpec data confirmed that the galaxy contains a disk rotating at around 300 km/s. It is larger than any other kinematically confirmed disks found at similar early epochs, and yet is comparable to the size of today's most massive disks.

Dr. Nanayakkara says the disk lives in a highly over-dense environment, hinting that such an environment might have favorable physical conditions for early disk formation.

"Given the lack of comparable galaxies to the Big Wheel in current cosmological simulations, these favorable physical conditions are likely not fully captured yet in current galaxy formation models. Specifically, environments of this kind are known to host frequent galaxy encounters, mergers and gas flows.

There was confusion in our group about the need for storage tanks like this. Basically they serve to even out the differences between inflow and use of the water. Like a modern water tower, fluctuations in use can be adsorbed by the water in the tank while the spring feeding the aqueducts provides a steady flow. There were originally more tanks, but today there are only two.

Then it was onto the Mosques, the first was the Mosque of the Barber, which contains the mausoleum of Abu Zama' al-Balawi a companion of the Prophet Muhammad who was supposed to have saved three hairs from the Prophet's beard. It was built in the 14th century but remodeled so that the current dates mostly from the 17th century.

It has very nice carved plaster on the upper part of the interior walls, but really ugly tiles on the lower (my opinion).

We were able to get to the courtyard but not the interior of the mosque.

Then it was on to the Grand Mosque, originally built in the 670's and therefore one of the oldest in the Islamic world.

After a quick look around the local streets and a rug shop we headed out towards El Jem.

This is a very dry area, but there was agriculture the whole way. Instead of wheat, it was now mainly olives, with the trees getting wider spacing when it was dryer.

There were also fields of prickly pear cactus, which they grow for the fruit, but they don't eat the paddles like in Mexico.
