Unpopular opinion but I actually like being spammed with texts. Don’t get me wrong I will ignore them for hours but when I do reply I can read people’s funny little thoughts and word scrambles and not be drained by having to actually have a conversation with them. And then I can just respond to the bits I want to respond to. It’s perfect!

whenever I get a text message (very rarely), I get all excited, like, "oo, someone wants to talk to me??" but 99.4% of the time it's pornbot spam

and yet I still don't learn—like the moron I am, I continue to have hope every time even though it inevitably leads to disappointment

I know for a fucking fact that my phone is listening to everything I say because I just got a spam text from some bot selling red bull. Yesterday, I told one of my co-workers that I wasn't feeling 100%, and he offered me a can of red bull as a pick me up. I took it home and tried it this morning, the very first red bull I'd ever had, and I really didn't like the taste; I told my mom that it was like they melted all three popsicle flavors together (cherry, grape, and orange), and then dyed it the exact color of piss.

Maybe it's just synchronicity, maybe the two are unrelated, but what are the odds of getting a personally targeted spam text about red bull not 12 hours after drinking one for the first time? I've never bought one before, and the last time I ever talked to anyone about it was TEN YEARS AGO because of Felix Baumgartner's free fall drop. This product is not in my orbit, and my co-worker only offered me a can because he just so happened to have an extra one.

This is freaking me out more than it should.

[UK] I and people I know have been getting lots of spam texts regarding energy discount applications

Looking at the gov.uk website:

Getting the Energy Bills Support Scheme discount  

“How you’ll get the discount - You do not need to apply for the discount, and there’s no need to contact your energy supplier.“

“The discount is automatic. If you get a message asking for your bank details, this could be a scam. You can report messages you think are suspicious.“

To report:

“Text messages: Forward the text message to 7726 - it’s free. This will report the message to your mobile phone provider.“

It worries me that people will fall for scams like these because they are already panicked. Seeing as my colleague’s in-laws were already in the process of filling the forms in the spam links, I felt like making this post.

I would sincerely like to cast a curse of some sort upon political spam text ads. Really. In the last...2 days, I have received no less than 20(!!!) political-themed ‘slideshow’ texts (i.e. political picture + brief text begging for attention; my phone marks pic+text combo as ‘slideshow’) from at least 3 different candidates/parties, and I think I have deleted close to 100 of them in just the last week. I get it, I do; you (or you campaign manager-person) are trying your very best to drum up those last few drips of support at the polls! Possibly also trying to actually get someone out to vote at all!!

....do you know what you’re actually doing? At this point, I am about at the point where I will vote in direct opposition to the majority of those stupid texts out of Spite. How Dare you spam my inbox like this, and make me actually cringe at every new text notification I get? I have chronically ill friends and family, I rely on regular texting to at least confirm they are still alive and hopefully not back in hospital again, How Dare the political spam machine make me long to remove all access to texts from my phone?
