spartacus and crassus :)
this is actually a rejected panel from a much longer comic I’ve been fucking around with on and off for awhile- I had plans to do a long form spartacus comic for a long time, I just keep missing the last book on my research list in second hand stores 😔 I always have money when the last copy sells out aughhh
anyway! I might call crassus my girl in the group chat, but I’ve actually spent more years wishing that spartacus got to run crassus through on his sword and then read the fate of rome out of his entrails. ALAS. on that note, isn’t it kind of interesting how spartacus’ funeral games for crixus turn roman order upside down and feel like both a foundational sacrifice and a curse? isn’t it kind of fun how crassus will not die in rome, and neither will pompey, who came in like a vulture to take credit for crassus’ work? (it’s VERY fun)

What are your queer headcanons for Spartacus characters? I'm curious 👀
Some of these are based on stuff in canon, others are just me thinkin' my thoughts. They're also for characters who aren't explicitly shown to be queer, such as Nasir, Agron, Saxa, Lucretia, and so on.
Spartacus is bi or pan. He was absolutely in love with Varro, and I think he also had a thing for Crixus and Nasir (Granted, I think everyone had a thing for Nasir and it's only because Agron made a move first that he didn't have half the camp vying for his affections.) The scene in Fugitvus where he and Aurelia are talking about what made them love Varro- "A lop-sided grin, eyes promising mischief."
"I fell to love the crooked bend of Varro's lips, long before the man himself."
"As did I."
Like, what about that doesn't scream being in love?
Also, fun fact, before Liam McIntyre took the role, Wentworth Miller was being considered for Spartacus, and I am going to daydream about that forfuckingever while sending Steven DeKnight mental messages to cast him in the new series that's supposed to be coming up.
Crixus is demi. He says that he's not interested in sex when he first joined the ludus, and it's only when he falls for Naevia that he's shown being attracted to anyone. And when Naevia finds herself sex repulsed, he's cool with their relationship not being physical. I know this isn't strictly an ace thing but I still love it.
Gannicus is one that I can't decide exactly. I firmly believe that he and Oenomaeus were in love with each other as much as they were with Melitta. The running theme throughout the show of characters talking of being reunited with their loves in the afterlife, then having Oenomaeus being there waiting patiently for Gannicus when he dies is amazing, I can't lie.
Lugo was one of the dozen or so men who probably would have enjoyed a bit of bed warming from Nasir. They're both so flirty with each other as time goes on. He strikes me as being 'Pretty women? Yeah! Pretty men? Yeah! Pretty individual who is neither man nor woman? Yeah! Lugo love all! Come to my tent, pretty person! Lugo will keep you warm!'
Caesar is.... Well, he's Caesar, so I'm genuinely surprised there weren't any scenes of him fucking his way through the rebellion.
I'd love to hear if you have any thoughts of your own, and I'm sorry this took a while for me to answer!

spartacus seasons 2-4 was where all the cool story stuff happened but s1 had something they dont have and never could have had. and it's andy whitman my best friend andy rip king you were the only one who could possibly infuse that character with such mystic sadness. like a pilgrim or some kind of warrior monk. mcintyre doesnt do a bad job at all but his spart is just. like a sort of headstrong fighter. andy's spart was a paladin. i dont know how he did it but he gave this performance that was wildly elevated for the kind of show he was in. his spartacus came off like he really was a man of ordinary, melancholic emotions born into a classical tragedy and forced to live with it, balancing on the knife's edge between myth and humanity. mcintyre's version is an action hero with depth. andy's is a new senecan tragedy

i need you to know that i voted for flint in that pirate poll because your tags said he was better and i haven't seen either show
lol and i deeply appreciate your confidence in me!
and i stand by my opinion flint would win in a fight against stede, because the first episode literally ends with this shot of flint (spoiler, most of it isn't his):
Tumblr media
like this is what i was talking about in my tags. there literally aren't words for how thoroughly flint would kill stede in a theoretical fight.
ppl genuinely weren't joking when they used the hydrogen bomb vs coughing baby pic for the poll. it is unspeakably funny for the sheer amount of overkill it would involve.

it is Gregg's turn to suffer today, so we are watching the Spartacus series so I can "well actually" through every episode with all the things I know about the 3rd Servile War and sometimes read from my Plutarch books. this is what he gets, a revenge history lesson

Netflix Picks Up Starz Series ‘Black Sails’ From January 2024
Tumblr media
Netflix will be starting the New Year off strong with the news coming today that the streaming service US will be picking up multiple seasons of the Starz Original series Black Sails from January 1st, 2023.
From executive producer Michael Bay, Black Sails is the historical drama series that serves as a prequel set 20 years prior to the beloved 1883 novel Treasure Island. It ran on Starz as an Original series for four seasons across 38 episodes between 2014 and 2017.
The series scored 3 Primetime Emmy wins throughout its runtime and remains a hit among fans with it currently carrying an impressive 8.2 on IMDb. If you haven’t seen it, it’s a mix of One Piece for its slavish ships and sets mixed with the historical drama and action of The Last Kingdom.
Amongst the vast ensemble cast for the show featured Toby Stephens, Hannah New, Luke Arnold, Jessica Parker Kennedy, Tom Hopper, Toby Schmitz, and many more.
When will Black Sails be on Netflix?
Multiple seasons will be coming to Netflix US on January 1st, 2024. The exact number of seasons coming to the service hasn’t been confirmed, but we suspect it’ll be all four.
The show is expected to continue to reside on the Starz streaming service.
We haven’t found any other Netflix regions scheduled to get the show. We also checked Netflix in the UK and Canada, but they’re not expected to arrive in either. That’s not to say this couldn’t be licensed to others down the road, however.
Tumblr media
For more on what’s coming to Netflix in the United States throughout January 2024, keep it locked here on What’s on Netflix.
Netflix in the US doesn’t have access to many Starz titles like it used to. Netflix US has previously held titles like Ash Vs. Evil Dead and Spartacus, while Netflix internationally carried Power. One significant exception is Outlander (although that’s licensed from Sony Pictures Television), with new seasons coming two years after their original air date. Season 6 of Outlander is due to release in 2024.

When it comes to the idea of casting for historical accuracy in period pieces I think my favorite approach was Spartacus where they just went “Yes Pana Hema Taylor is Māori, yes he’s in Ancient Rome, it’s fine don’t worry about it he has a sword and a boyfriend, the air conditioning is on and his favorite music is playing”

you guys have got to stop asking Neil gaiman about gay sex they don’t make straight men like the Spartacus 2013 cast anymore wherein the two dudes playing a gay couple said to each other if you don’t put your whole sensual back like you want me badly into this scene I’m not doing it

Happy Birthday John David Hannah born 23rd April 1962 in East Kilbride.
Hannah attended Heathery Knowe Primary School then Claremont High School in East Kilbride and on leaving school was an apprentice electrician for four years. He gave up his work as an electrician after being accepted to the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow.
After a few years cutting his teeth in TV shows likeThe Bill, Boon and of course Taggart, Hannah finally got his ‘big break’ when he was cast as Matthew in Four Weddings and a Funeral, since then he has made a name for himself on both stage and screen. His most notable roles have been as Quintus Lentulus Batiatus in the American television series Spartacus, Rutger Simon in Damages and Jack Roper in New Street Law, film roles include the two “Mummy” movies, Tam McGraw in The Wee Man and James Hammerton in Sliding Doors. John also helped Edinburgh Zoo celebrate its centenary in 2013 by narrating a BBB documentary on the tourist attraction's history, getting up-close-and-personal with the zoo's furry residents by launching a newly refurbished koala enclosure.
Hannah was in the Slovakian film The Auschwitz Report in 2021, based on a true story it is about two prisoners of the infamous Extermination camp who manage to escape with details about the camp's operation including a label from a canister of the pesticide Zyklon-B.
More up to date he was in an excellent episode ofrthe hit series, post apocalyptic series The Last of Us in 2023. he also appeared in the most recent series of Black Mirror set in Scotland. called Loch Henry about a young couple travel to a sleepy Scottish town to start work on a genteel nature documentary - but find themselves drawn to a juicy local story involving shocking events of the past.
Look out for David in his latest movie, Damaged, which he costarswith Hollywood A-ist actor Samuel L Jackson, this too is filmed in several Scottish locations across the Edinburgh area. We see the Royal Mile, Edinburgh Castle, Calton Hill, the Forth Road Bridge and several other local spots like Bathgate and Livinston in the trailer, Gianni Capldi is also in the film.
He has several other projects on the go, so is not short of work.

The Dothraki really just exist to show how Different and Civilized Daenerys is from them. She’s light skinned and light haired, her language has a word for ‘thank you’, she’s educated, she has to tell them to stop raping women, she has to steer them towards Goodness, she’s a victim of their society until she subjugates them. The Dothraki don’t actually matter on a small-scale; they’re just a symbol of the Backwards and the Uncivilized. Oh, and let’s make sure everyone is well aware that they are Not White.
GRRM decided that he wanted Daenerys to be white and to “save” brown and black people, whom he decided to write as lesser than and unable to save themselves. An entire continent, and we don’t see a slave leader or rebel similar to Spartacus or Nat Turner ?
This is why my anons have called his decisions there racist, and I'll actually just quote one here:
It’s not a matter of “X culture is not more virtuous than Y culture”, it’s a matter of “the characters of color get awful, superficial characterization and a violent culture attached to them, meanwhile the white characters have extensive characterization and a violent culture attached to them”. (link)
The problem isn't that one character who happened to be violent happened to be a poc. It's the discrepancy in characterization he gives one group, denies another. In my other ask we talk about this more. It would have been such an easy thing to insert someone who objected to slavery of the violent way of life, and honestly, the expected thing, considering how he generally writes such a diverse cast of characters in each POV. 🤷🏻‍♀️

The Dubious Character
Alright, I’m still on the Sebastian Stan fandom… and as such, I know not only that he has been cast but the first pictures of him in character of DONALD TRUMP are circulating and of course… I’ve seen the opinions… jejejeje
I’ve also seen the “I BETTER NOT SEE ONE FIC OF DONALD TRUMP” which I think is hilarious…
And I’m watching Spartacus (FOR THE THIRD TIME) and I fell HARD for a dubious character of my own
Julius Caesar
So let’s make a deal
If I see one fan fiction about Sebastian Stan’s Donald Trump… I’ll top it with a fan fiction of this JC

personally i’m thrilled about the spartacus announcement. just going by deknight’s very politics-heavy twitter presence i’m guessing it will be something of a trump-era allegory, with ashur cast as the increasingly unhinged narcissistic rapist with delusions of grandeur. plus this sounds like a return to the ludus & the upstairs/downstairs vibe of Blood and Sand & Gods of the Arena, which i am SO down for! and! because we’re in AU territory pretty much any characters could return! and there will undoubtedly be a new ensemble of characters to love (& love to hate)!
look, i’d also love to see nagron again, but this is the bonkers sex & violence show, surely a fluffy goat farm kind of thing was never in the cards yeah? leave them alone & let them have their happy ending, i say! also fwiw:

so like… all good things as far as i’m concerned. i can’t wait.
