i declare

thinking about the tortured poets department the song, and the charlie puth line, and how maybe like, the act of declaring he should be a bigger artist helps place the song into the greater timeline.

because it’s a sort of weird thing to say in 2024 of an artist that’s no longer up and coming.

charlie puth got his start in youtube in the late 2000’s and released his debut single in february 2015. and leading up to that he had several EP’s and promotional singles. it made me curious, at what point might the people en masse start to pay him attention? i checked google trends and as you can see here he gets a huge jump between the 2014 and 2015 data.

(he then gets a further jump toward 2016 when he did a promo single featuring megan trainor, and then doing “see you again” with wiz khalifa. (coincidentally this song becomes one of the guest duets featured in the 1989 tour movie))

and i was looking around at articles from this time period, when i ran into this tasty morsel:

so to summarize, charlie puth had his breakout star peak over the course of roughly 2014-2016, during which he was up for an award at the 2015 MTV VMAs. he doesn’t win, and in fact, he loses out to taylor herself! later on in the article it talks about him going to an after party and hanging out with taylor selena and others. so it had me thinking, i could almost imagine taylor talking with her friends that year or that night, or even declaring to charlie himself in the wake of his loss and her win, in a giddy manner, at the party they are reported as having talked at, that he deserves more success than he gets. in this way i came to the conclusion that the timeframe of 2015-ish (rather than 2023) really fits the spirit of the lyric “we declared charlie puth should be a bigger artist”

and another thing that helps tie the song to this time period (maybe some of you have guessed?) the line “who else decodes you?” is extra apt because… *da da-da daaaaa*

on a more solemn note? i don’t think it requires too much of a stretch of the imagination to see “but you awaken with dread” “i chose this cyclone with you” among other lines pointing to the new layer of stress taylor probably was harboring around being with karlie in public. because this is all taking place in the year directly following kissgate 🥺

Now, being eternally curious, I just have to ask: what DO other monsters think is under my hood? -The River Person

Undertale Sans - He tried all his teenage years to pull the hood to see what's under, but it's like River Person always knows what he's doing. Sans thinks they're just a random eye, seeing everything. Not the weirdest thing he has seen though.

Undertale Papyrus - If Papyrus insists so much on doing all his trips on foot, it's because Sans once said to his five-years-old self that a terrible carnivore monster was hiding under that hood and was eating children who don't do their homework when they're alone. He didn't believe it, of course! But just to be sure, he decided to not take the ferry anymore. Like never. He doesn't want to know.

Undertale Toriel - She assumed over time it's just a very shy monster and respects that. Sure, they are odd and their predictions creep her out, but that would be just rude to ask what's under the hood.

Undertale Asgore - He's pretty sure that monster has been there since the war, so maybe a hiding boss monster who ignores themselves? He tried to get them to live in a house like everyone, but it never worked? Asgore decided not to question it anymore as time passed.

Undertale Undyne - She thinks it's some elaborated robot honestly. No one would do their job 24 hours a day without complaining once or... You know, leaving their boat. She tried several times to see what was under, but like Sans, she never had any chance. She wants to know so bad.

Undertale Alphys - Obviously, some villain stuck in the boat by a spell to prevent him from ever hurting anyone. It's like their redemption arc or something. Or maybe she's just watching a little too much anime, who knows.

Undertale Frisk - They always assumed it was Gaster, but then Gaster showed up and ruined their theory. So then they assumed it was Papyrus hiding because they're the same height, but one day Papyrus showed up to stop them from going on the ferry, so it's not that either. Frisk is still investigating.

Undertale Chara - They're corporeal for sure because Chara punched their guts once after they said they were going to die and that hurt them. Well, they died shortly after so that river person guy was right, but still. Chara hates their guts and doesn't want to know what's hiding there.

Undertale Mettaton - Like Alphys, he always assumed it was a robot created to lead him where he has to go, before realizing everyone can use it. Well, that sucks. He wrote an offensive movie about the river person just because he was angry. In it, he said River Person is a very mysterious charismatic robot that somehow looks exactly like him. Then the robot turns out to be a master ninja in disguise for some reason. Not all movies can be good.

Undertale Gaster - He always assumed the hood was the monster and that there was nothing under it. I mean, there are rock monsters, blanket monsters, and even mouth monsters, why not hood monsters?

Undertale Grillby - He thinks that's an elemental monster of darkness. That would explain why they're here for so long and why they're looking invisible. It's just odd he doesn't feel it as he's supposed to being an elemental monster himself.

Undertale Muffet - Clearly not enough money for her own taste.

Undertale Burgerpants - He thinks the monster is the boat, since it seems alive, and that River Person is just some disguise because the boat monster thinks it's weird just being a boat for a living. He understands. Everyone calls him the burger guy :(

Undertale Flowey - He doesn't know but he never could kill the guy, so he assumed it's a ghost? Maybe the first River Person died and their spirit has been haunting the boat since? He wishes he could destroy them to dissect them.

Undertale Gerson - He thinks that's a random guy working the day and sleepwalking the night, and that's why they're in their boat all day and night. And somehow as old as Asgore for some reason. Maybe some exiled member of the royal family they punished this way.

Jude getting Hendo & Jack back together...maybe Trent is the other child (Hendo's ofc) and they're both sick of their (adoptive, oddly young but who's counting) Dad moping neglecting self care and living a beige existence bc he misses Jack's sunshine. so they track Jack down who is in an equally miserable condition without Jordan's love and support. the mission then is try to understand why the break up happened (drinking? commitment? parenting? Jack being more of a kid than Jude while Jordan is a control freak?) and what they can do to fix it...and ofc this is Lifetime Xmas movie romcom shit that Jack would appreciate, so Jordan & Jack miraculously address their issues and fall back in love and get their stupid happy ending in time for the holidays with their found fam

As Winter sweeps through the streets of Liverpool, it paints a frosty picture. The holiday season is nearing, and every house in the neighbourhood gleams with festive lights and decorations. Every house, except one.

Jordan's house remains dim and quiet. Gone is the lively banter, the playful teasing, and the warmth of Jack's presence. Now, the silent rooms echo the emptiness that Jordan feels.

Inside the St. George's Academy, Trent and Jude sprint down the football pitch, passing the ball between themselves, exhibiting skills that surpass their young age.

They live and breathe football, but once off the field, their concerns as of late gravitate towards their beloved adoptive father and his melancholic state. It's undeniable; Jordan misses, needs, Jack's vibrant and banterous nature that once filled their home with laughter and joy.

One evening, after their training, the duo huddle together in their shared room, posters of their football heroes looking down on them. "We have to do something. Christmas is right around the corner," Trent begins, his voice thick with conviction.

Jude nods, determination set in his young eyes and strong jaw. "We need to find Jack. We need to bring him back."

They gather information, relying on fragments of overheard conversations and old photographs. Jack, they find out, runs a small café downtown. The place is lively, with Jack's unmistakable laugh floating through the air, but there’s an undercurrent of sadness in his eyes. The break is still pretty fresh, after all.

Jack’s eyes light up instantly when the two of them reach the front of the queue, greeting them excitedly. But the moment he connects them back to Jordan is evident behind his gaze, the light seeping from behind them slightly, intonation slipping from his voice.

“So boys,“ He begins once ushering them to sit down at the counter opposite him as he works, “To what do I owe this pleasure?”

Trent and Jude share a glance before Jude gestures for his brother to go on and explain. Trent leans forwards on his elbows as he begins with a sigh, “Well, it’s Dad. He—“

“Oh— wait…” Jack interrupts suddenly, stopping with a coffee cup held mid-air, “Jordan’s… Jordan’s okay, isn’t he? You guys are alright?”

His immediate concern for Jordan’s well-being, as well as their own, gives Trent and Jude even more hope. Jack has never stopped caring for the three of them and he’s always made them feel safe.

Trent’s the one to quickly set the record straight and that easygoing grin soon returns to Jack’s cheeks. He’s glad, he tells them, and then Trent and Jude broach the real reason why they’re here.

They learn of the rift that drove the two apart - Jack's casual attitude towards life contrasting Jordan's more structured, disciplined approach. While Jack was spontaneous, often indulging in late-night drinks and fun, Jordan, as a father, craved stability and routine.

With their mission clear, the duo approach Jack with their plan. Hesitant at first, he soon gets caught up in their infectious enthusiasm. The two kids paint a picture of Christmas without him – a lacklustre tree, a father trying hard to keep up spirits, and two young hearts missing their beloved Jack.

As Christmas Eve approaches, Jack and the kids hatch a plan using the allure of a football match they'd be playing at their academy.

Jordan takes the two of them that morning and watches on from the sidelines as usual. He’s always full of praise for the both of them, shouting encouragements and getting pissed off on their behalves when a decision doesn’t go their way.

It takes a while, but as the game progresses, Jack, standing at the sidelines, catches Jordan's eye. There's a moment of stunned silence before recognition dawns.

The game ends, but neither Jordan nor Jack seem to notice. They talk. They bicker. They reminisce. Moments pass, with the chilly night air carrying whispers of their conversation.

Trent and Jude watch from a distance, fingers crossed. It’s not until they see their father wrap an arm around Jack, pulling him into a hug, that they allow themselves to cheer, followed by laughter when Jack shoots them an enthusiastic thumbs up behind Jordan’s back.

Christmas morning dawns bright and joyful. The Henderson household awakens to the sounds of Jack's laughter and the scent of fresh pancakes. The living room, once sombre, now twinkles with fairy lights. The tree, once unlit, stands tall and bright, bearing witness to a family's reunion.

As presents get passed around, Jack and Jordan sharing lingering looks, Trent and Jude exchange triumphant glances. Their mission, it seems, has been a resounding success. Christmas, this year, is all about new beginnings and second chances.

So when Tom came to the gym to train for the first time he forgot his sandals. He said, he can pick some up for tomorrows training session. I said cool..and assured him it was no big deal. 

*In martial arts gyms you use sandals when off of the mat and we go barefoot when on the mat. In most gyms its pretty strict, simply to keep bacteria and what not off the mat that we roll around on. 


So the next day, I get a txt from Tom that he’s going to be running a little late, and that he would likely not have enough time to pick up a pair of sandals.

The txt read “I didn’t have time to get flip flops today, can I still come train?” I was in the middle of class so I didn’t see it. 


About a half an hour later, I check my phone to see the txt. I quickly reply “ of course man! Come on down.” But it had been so long, I figured he just went home. Now I’m thinking in my head, man.. did I just miss the opportunity to train with tom again because he thinks i’m that strict about the sandals. Right as i’m thinking that the door creeks open, and toms there with a pair of Fur filled Crocs! He lifts em up and says “will these work, mate?” and smiles. Found out later, this dude rushed to the local Walmart after he left set to pick them up! Haha!

Ended up being a great night, filled with epic impersonations, industry stories and life talk. It doesn’t take long to fathom why Tom is as successful and skillful as he is. I don’t think of him is an Actor, I think of him as a person who takes act-ion. He thinks of something and he does, it’s mad inspiring.

March 5th, 2024

11:07 pm listening to dull by Asake while sitting in my room in Karen with Kendi. Wow, KaMami and LoustaLousta baby is here. I am so happy to have them in the city of God with me. They got here pretty late last night, I was on duty to open for them so I slept but like an anxious sleep. I was scared I wouldn’t hear their call and they would be locked out. LMAO, that's how I know I was excited and that I Love them…I had disrupted sleep willingly for them. They got in, had some food then everyone went to bed. I woke up a lot later than usual today, it was 11:30 but it felt like 3pm. I had nothing planned today which was nice after being on the move so much for the last few days.I had breakfast of champs: matoke, greens and a sausage. Then I chilled with the fam and the kids. Baby Jason Mwenda is becoming good friends with LoustaLousta. I would say Lousta is being kind but Jason is two so he is following Lousta and hitting him. I am quite impressed by LoustLoustabears kindness and patience. Anyway, we all hung out at the house for the day. KaMami was getting her hair retied so everyone was on the veranda or around that area hanging out. I went down to the farm with LoustaLousta, Barrio had some dead rabbits and he showed them to us. LMAO, I didn’t know/expect he was going to bring the little dead baby rabbits and put them in front of us which made LoustaLousta a bit nervous, sad and then curious about death. This child was asking me questions I didn’t know how to answer but we had a decent convo about death and how sometimes it just happens. It was nice to walk with him down the same lane my brother and I grew up on. It feels full circle. We came back in, I went upstairs to watch a movie then I went for a walk. We had dinner all together at the table instead of the tv room. KaMami really changes things around here, making it more wholesome and more of a home. During dinner SweSwe was pretty violent with baby Jason Mwenda because he was crying. She beat a two year old because he was crying and kept beating him so he would stop crying. Like he is two, he doesn't understand and he will cry because he is being hurt. Anyway, it was quite upsetting and LoustaLousta got upset and cried because his friend/brother was being beaten. He has never witnessed something like that and it really shook my baby. He refused to eat, he literally said: I cannot eat with this going on. LoustaLousta is such an empathetic kid so that was hard for him to see. Imagine how hard it is to be a two year old experiencing that. LousataLousta was given ice cream and he didn’t even eat his ice cream. You know how rough things gotta be for a 7 year old to reject ice cream? I took him upstairs to watch cartoons and hang out in my room. I know his dynamic with his great mama has kinda shifted but he is a very forgiving kid. When we went upstairs, it was my turn to get in my feelings. I recognized what had happened there was the effects of colonization. My grandmother went to  the African equivalent to a residential school. The violence the schools and the missionaries imposed on them is the same violence my grandmother imposed on her kids, my dad and now her two year old grandson. It made me sad for my grandma. Then it made me think how this evil spirit of colonization, this violence has permeated every crevice on Earth and I wish I could end it. I wish I could undo it. But I cannot. And I felt helpless. I Trust the Universe, that all this hatred too shall pass. That colonization and it’s effects will pass. Because life is Gøod. And we deserve a Gøod life. Every single being, creature and cell on this Earth deserves to live to its fullest potential without being harmed by other humans or systems. Life is Gøod. God is Gøod. Ase. Ase. Ase

Sophia Samson, FASA'S 2022 - 2023 Treasurer

I’m just going to do this by scrolling through my camera roll like a Sunday morning debrief because I simply can’t remember anything that has happened before breakfast. There is no theme to this, just tiny little thoughts and mems.

This is a pic of me as a child which I’m using purely as an attention grabber and because I didn’t want Mikey to be the first picture here. It is completely irrelevant.

The first FASA thing I attended was the Fall Mass Meeting and I went there knowing no one after being too intimidated to walk up to the Festifall table. Now I realize that was dumb dumb but that flag was wavin and I was waverin. I am now ever so thankful that I woke up from that glorious dorm room nap to walk over to Rackham that day. I remember it being such a warm welcoming little world AND I was introduced to Hola Seoul for the first time after that (thanks Caitlin). Life changing to day to say the least. 

Mikey gets a feature because this is the first FASA pic in my phone which is kinda a big deal due to how much storage space this organization takes up. Mini shoutout to him while we’re here because he was my FASA buddy and Ross guide first semester, I probably wouldn’t be where I am today without him. Thank you FASA spirits for bringing him to me, you real for that.

I was sorted into a lineage first and they were so sweet and gave me little gifts. One of those boxes of ramen is in my cupboard at this very moment (waiting for a rainy day). I looked up to them and immediately they were like siblings. I remember Sam rambling about classes I should take and giving me life advice five minutes into meeting them, it’s still in my notes app. Side note Emily is also literally like my twin so we’re connected like that. Hi Emily I luv u. Also hi to the rest of our lineage you are my idols and some of the coolest people I know.

That was a sidebar this is probably so confusing oops… okay I don’t know if I made this up but I strongly believe there was a little get together with dirty and excellence after that which left me craving some more FASA. I have such a terrible memory for a girl of only 20 years of age, but I definitely remember the feeling of wanting to hang out with these people way more than I was. That led me to apply to be an intern, which ended up changing the direction of the next year for me. Who knows where I’d be if I hadn’t decided to submit that application. Probably not on board this year and not as active as I am now, perhaps the Rossholes would have taken over. A scary thought. Hopefully I’m allowed to say Rosshole, Emily add asterisks here if necessary teehee.

Wow, we look so young and naive. I don’t even know how to describe Teen Beach Movie night, but something hit me where I was like I can see myself getting to be really good friends with these people. Especially on that silent walk back to the CCTC. There was also a scary thought of us feeling like my dad and his college friends which gave me the heebie jeebies but is also kind of heartwarming. Now looking back, I have gotten to know those people and I am in fact really good friends with them so call me Raven Symone I think I’m psychic. 

Elections were after that. Look at us, all elected and whatnot. 

I’ll take this part of my little walk down memory lane to thank my Treasurer predecessors. Sam and Shane were such a big help when I joined the board and throughout this year, so major thank you to the two of you for being the best ever. The Treasurer position would have spontaneously combusted without Shane helping me throughout this year, so special thanks to King Shane. jkjk I’m very responsible 👀 Anyway, according to my camera roll battle was after that…

Now that I’m looking at these pics I remember Battle last year being where I got especially close to the homies. Megan, Therese, and I were in the trenches as we were ill and Kyle was getting through a bout of pink eye. Though our immune systems were weak, our friendships got strong. This year I’ve gotten especially close to those people and I’m very thankful we ended up in that hotel together. Love y’all homies xoxo

This pic is from Boyne and so much has happened since then. I’m gonna fast-track my sentiments about the year in a leetle paragraph. I’ve spent hours and hours with FASA and I’ve loved every minute of it. Getting to hang out with all you FASA people gives me something to look forward to on the daily. I’ve grown a lot through this organization and for that I am thankful, and I look forward to continuing to grow over the next two years before I peace out and become famous. Seriously though this is such an amazing organization and I’m so glad I woke up from my dorm room nap to go to mass meeting last year.
