Another thing I particularly like about Spirited (2022) is that in this world of black-and-white purity culture, its final message is that not only should everyone be given a chance, change doesn't look the same for everyone. Some people will have a huge, course-correcting event. Some people will just make small decisions that will gradually add up.
Maybe there's no magic wand Maybe there's no switch to flip Some days you may soar beyond And some days you start to slip
And whether it's Christmas Day Or a random day in May You're gonna wanna say That you tried the best you could And a little is enough
I don't know about you, but I think a lot of people need to hear and absorb this message, and realize that it applies not just to themselves but the people they're judging, too.

Begging y’all to watch Spirited for Ryan Reynolds being a fucked up little rage-marketing Scrooge hyping up the “war on Christmas” (much to the chagrin of the Ghost of Christmas Present (Will Ferrell)) and to stay for the writing and good vibes and jams
It’s hard to make a good movie musical (and hard to make a good Christmas movie at that) and I think this one is a nice holiday treat

thinking about yesterday when my family watched spirited & absolutely screamed & shrieked & freaked out when I said things like “the homoerotic tension of it all” & “bisexual lighting” during Will Ferrel & Ryan Reynolds scenes. this website has rotted my brain but least I’m really funny to people who aren’t extremely online

So we watched both Spirited and The Muppet Christmas Carol this year, and thinking about it, I realized;
Spirited holds “Scrooge”’s (it’s a different person in the movie, but he’s still the “Scrooge”) hand a little more and goes, “you did great! Yes you’re redeemed; you may not be amazing right off, but you can work on it”.
But I’m realizing that the original Dickens’ Carol (in all the renditions I’ve seen; I haven’t read the book) is pretty much just the ghosts showing Scrooge his trauma and everything else that went wrong in his life, told him he’d die younger than he would’ve if he hadn’t gone mean, scared him half to death to where he had questions like, “can this be changed?! Is the future carved in stone?!”, and then they just…leave him, lol.
They don’t reassure him, they just leave him to figure, “hey! I’m back so it must be fixable”.
Don’t get me wrong; The Christmas Carol is a classic! But it just feels like the spirits aren’t very empathetic to Scrooge in most of the renditions.
…Except for that Christmas Present guy in the Muppets; he’s awesome.

one thing i actually really appreciate about spirited is that its good guys are allowed to curse. it doesn't condemn swearing, sex, or drugs. they acknowledge and embrace them as a natural, healthy part of adult life. it's a different kind of moral standard than most christmas movies i've seen, it's nice to finally have that.

I don’t think every film should be made into a stage musical,
Now that being a said I think the film Spirited (2022) would be a very good stage musical. Maybe with a revolving stage?

Analysis of Past, Present and Future symbolism in Spirited's Unredeemable
Tumblr media
I finally got round to watching this film this year, and as usual, Unredeemable blew me away, but I started to notice some things
First off, the song starts with the three characters, Marley, Clint and Present, with Marley representing Present's past (the wording of this is about to get real confusing), his old friend from his cruel victorian days, standing to his left, and Clint, his newfound bro representing who he is now, his present, and the possibility of his future.
Tumblr media
And Present standing between them, torn.
Until Present starts singing, starts walking, and Clint and Marley fall in line together, side by side, on equal footing
(Also the lighting, Present's green with a little of Clint's red:)
Tumblr media
Until Clint comes forward, as himself, and suggests retirement, standing in between Roberto and his past (Marley) by implementing something new.
And when Marley tries to banish him, Present grabs hold of this new idea and clings to it, saving Clint, now standing in the middle once again, but holding onto Clint and the future.
Tumblr media
Now that the hospital has been stripped away, they've lost the red/green lighting and just have darkness with a slight green tint as Present addreses the crowd. Until Kimberly's orange light slowly creeps in, getting brighter until we see her, glowing, wearing white in a crowd of figures wearing all black.
Tumblr media
Present starts chasing her, literally chasing down his own future. It's also important to mention that he's completely discarded his green clothes by now and is just in all white, specifically a Dickensian-era white suit, stripped down to his bare essentials for everyone to see as his past is finally revealed.
Present chases Kimberly's light through the crowd, desperately, but he finds something else emitting the same light, his past, which also has the power to change him.
Tumblr media
Something Ebenezer/Present says in this little past segment: "You're wasting your time, Jacob!" Which isn't a line from the book as far as I can tell, but is such a cool thing to add to put extra weight onto his redemption and his and Marley's relationship. Because who does he see when he turns around?
Tumblr media
Marley and Clint, and Marley is holding the watch, the symbol of the Present and the choice he can make right now to change his circumstance. The watch glowing with the same orange light, having the same power to change him.
Also his line "Are you sure?" Checking in with his friend, but also "You're wasting your time Jacob!" "Are you sure?" The uninterrupted flow of the dialogue brings us back to that central idea of redemption and reinstates the question that has been plaguing Present's mind the whole movie: is he really redeemed? Is it a waste of time to try and redeem an unredeemable?
The symbolism of light is so, so important here, because, as Present is considering this crucial question, the backing singers start their chorus, and what do they do? Raise flashlights as they sing, spilling light onto the stage, shedding more light on Present's situation and decision, banishing the green tint and replacing it with a solid blue. Giving him their support by illuminating him.
Tumblr media
And the lyrics they sing are pretty much the mantra of their whole organisation: "we have to believe inside the worst of us there is some decency there, you know that you can achieve something miraculous if you only dare"
They're in the business of redemption, they HAVE to believe in it, they have to belive in the good in worst souls, because if not, what is it all for? That's why Present grabs watch, that's why he decides he has to go, has to try, has to embrace his future, whatever it may bring. Because he has to know if there is truly good within him, he has to know that the cause he has dedicated the last 200 years of his existence to made a difference, that it was worth it, that he is worth it.
Tumblr media
And the way everyone celebrates around him! Everyone is so, so happy to see him do something for himself, to take that chance. They way they dance around him in the final chorus is just so beautiful. Gone from view are Clint and Marley, the Future and the Past, all that exists is the Present and all the uncertainty that brings
Tumblr media
And by God it's an awesome moment
This was just a fun little post I wanted to make because I'm crazy about this movie. Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays!

If I’d ever had a possibility of directing stage production of Spirited, I’d go into direction of Present being so much in the closet that tho he knows perfectly well that love is love but never actually thought that hey, maybe I’m not so straight myself??? (asexual demiromantics let’s gooo) and that he dreams of this nice gal cause like, that’s what he should want, right??? and then there’s clint and oh. my god.
Best part? I wouldn’t change the script at all.
