In the midst of grieving my siblings I remember seeing a quote that said something like: “Your greatest sermon will be during your hardest trial.” I f*cking hated that everyone’s eyes were on me, but I also knew I was an example whether I liked it or not. So on (what would be) my sister’s 40th birthday today, I wanted to share some wisdom instead of pain.

it’s so strange because i thought it was such a beautiful thing to witness when I first saw this kind of heart in action. I was in Indonesia on short-term and like any overeager first-time missionary abroad, i wanted to do something. i just wanted to be useful. To be useful for Kingdom vision or maybe just to know that I could go back home knowing i didn’t waste my time and money coming here. Regardless of motive, i was itching to do w o r k.

It was P. Ben from JCA that boggled me. He’s Mingie’s year, so pretty young dude, but tbh, he wasn’t bursting with enthusiasm and excitement for ministry. Which is fine, that’s not the expectation, but it made me wonder what his deal was. Watching him, I learned a lot. He had been to Indonesia around 3-4 times before, basically every summer to be on short-term or to lead a team. He had done it all before, the VBS, seeing the orphanage, meeting the same kids every year. I can attest that you come back from a trip the first time, and everything is new and magical and stimulating. But by year four, how new and magical can it get? Compare your first year going to college and compare your senior year when you’re going back to what you’ve been doing for the last 3 years. You get the point. 

But I mean, short-term missions isn’t just going back to college. Sometimes, it feels like there’s even more risk to it. Your decision to go is supported by financial and spiritual supporters … you don’t want to waste someone else’s time and prayers! For some people, it means taking a lot of PTO and for students, it can mean giving up a summer internship or just anything else that’s productive in career building. 

Okay, back to P. Ben. (I’m going to drop the “P” because he was like, two years older than me and didn’t feel so “P” in its formality.) We had to do the most ridiculous body worship dances to the most outdated worship songs and you can’t help but feel ridiculous. But because of the feeling of being “on mission” you suck it up and you do it. You don’t just do it, you pretend like you’re having the best time ever. And sometimes, with God’s grace, it kinda does become that. Ben didn’t even pretend. During the VBS lessons, he sat there. He drove people where they needed to go. I mean, he did everything that he was told, but outside looking in, he did not seem enthused. Part of me was confused, “Does he think he’s too good for this? Does he feel like this is a waste of his time? I mean, he is a pastor at JCA…” I wasn’t trying to be judgmental, just trying to understand the mind tinkerings of this dude in ministry… But I talked to him about it and he genuinely loved it. Sure, it didn’t look it, but his words made me imagine a heart that was bursting inside. He comes back every year because he loves Indonesia. He loves supporting and learning under P. Nate and P. Paul in Singapore. He doesn’t mind the babysitting, the early morning prayer meetings, the heat and humidity of Southeast Asia, or the mindless moments of missions because the posture of humility within his heart was enough to glorify God. It wasn’t how much the kids responded/loved him, or how many prayers he prayed over Indo, it was simply being humble enough to accept any role to serve. Because this is what glorifies the Father. not being bogged down by results and deliverables, just an offering of the heart. wild. Bewildered, I went back to Chapel Hill for my senior year and I wanted to hold onto this principle of “nothing is a waste of my time.” It wasn’t easy, but it was a lot of fun. It felt almost cinematic responding to 4AM calls to people having crises. Many spontaneous meet ups to make sure that people knew that I was available to them. It’s funny because i thought that was the challenge of this conviction. Little did I know…

5 months post-graduation and I’m clacking away at a keyboard. My butt gets sore from sitting 8 hours a day. My current assignment is to read a 100+ page manual about keying and coding transcripts. Young adult life is thrilling. I never thought I would be motivated enough to be a morning person. Yet I am determined to get into the office by 8AM so that I can leave right at 4PM to harvest as many daylight hours as I can. To be stuck in any sort of commuting traffic seems like a punch to the gut because those are precious minutes wasted in a car rather than doing something that I enjoy. Funny because in college, I never minded the 20-30 minute drives between cities just to sit and think with Jesus. I used to walk the long way home. Now, there’s no such thing. Why is time so precious? I need to kill this mentality that I’ve sold 8 invaluable hours of freedom to a corporate beast. My freedom has already been paid for by the blood of Jesus. So why am I living like I’m not free? Dramatic, but true. I am not too good for this job.This is not outside of my purpose, my calling, or the will of the Father. The joy of the Lord is my strength.
