Commander Bans

I wasn't initially planning on posting about this but it's just so controversial I felt like I had to. Yesterday when I woke up to the news I was shocked to say the least. This past month I spent $3000 on a cEDH Birgi, God of Storytelling deck with three out of four of these cards and to say I was upset would be an understatement. I've seen a lot of people on Facebook and Instagram either celebrating the bans or, like me, expressing how bummed they are that they spent hundreds of dollars on cards for their commander decks that they can't play. I got into cEDH a few years ago with Narset and Yisan and was excited to add Birgi to my list so I decided to go all out to make it as fast and as efficient as possible. With that I decided to splurge for Dockside Extortionist, Mana Crypt, and Jeweled Lotus along with other mana rocks like Mox Diamond and Mana Vault. For Narset and Yisan I know what to replace the Lotus and Crypt with but Birgi is a little harder to find replacements since the best substitutes are already in the deck. I'm thinking about Springleaf Drum as a substitute for one of the artifacts and a cheap cantrip like Academic Dispute (I'm not sure if it technically counts as a cantrip since it lets you discards and draw with the learn mechanic and doesn't replace itself). For now I replaced Dockside Extortionist with Simian Spirit Guide which I think is good enough but I also ordered a Walking Ballista and Ragavan as other possible replacements.
For me this feels bittersweet because on one hand my cEDH decks suffered a major blow but at the same time it slowed them down enough so that more casual decks can compete better. I guess I'm just upset that I spent $400 on cards for my Birgi deck that I can't use anymore and they synergized so much with her. There's still a SLIGHT chance they'll be unbanned after the backlash so I'm going to keep them. I've seen a lot of people say they're going to keep playing with them anyway with rule 0 in casual games since Wizards doesn't care about them.
For Nadu it's just another Oko and Hogaak situation and shows that every few years Wizards prints a card that's so OP they don't know it until after it's been released. Considering how much havoc it's been causing in Modern I would say it was a good call, especially with the larger card pool in commander. Apologies to anyone who built Nadu as a commander.
And The One Ring is still $100 and is played in almost every deck in Modern.

Hey yall! I found out how to export my deck from Arena, so attached at the bottom of this post is the deck I used to achieve that 50,000/50,000 Fairground Trumpeter from the Commander Spotlight!

Potential hot take for Magic: the Gathering's Commander format, but I'm starting to think CEDH and Casual Commander should have two separate ban lists.
Now hear me out. I don't personally play CEDH because the concept of it simply doesn't interest me, but from what I hear, it's effectively an entirely different game in practice. Gone are the alliances, the negotiations, the room for errors. It's whoever does their thing the absolute fastest or stops the other players the best. Politics and generally having a good time, on the other hand, are the priorities of Casual Commander play, even to a degree at high power non-CEDH levels.
So as I think about this, Emrakul being banned for "not being fun to play against" makes no sense for CEDH. As a game, CEDH primarily revolves around combos and control, and while Emrakul is nothing to sneeze at, you either need to cheat it out or have an infinite mana combo, and with the former probably being most common, you're most often not going to get the cast trigger. I genuinely cannot imagine her making a splash in CEDH compared to the utterly deranged things people pull off there.
Casual Commander, on the other hand, is an entirely different beast, rule zero conversations can be difficult to bring up, and there's ALWAYS that one guy that brings the degenerate shit to a casual game, anyway. Banning based on fun value is a much more reasonable option for a specifically casual format. Banning things like Karnlock for slowing down or outright halting the game (or really anything generally deemed "unfun" by a majority of casual players), especially in a format that already tends to be slower, makes sense in a more casual setting. It's a bit more difficult of a thing to judge, as it's rather subjective, but other common examples seem to be fast mana and land destruction.
I'm admittedly on the fence about fast mana, but my big issue with it is that there's simply no middle ground. You either pay 2-3 mana for 1 mana, or you pay 1 mana for 2-3 mana. The only guaranteed "break even" mana rock I can think of is Timeless Lotus, which is legendary, can only be used in 5 color decks, and costs 5 mana to play in the first place, or Springleaf Drum, which is solid but has a pretty rough additional cost that already requires you to have a board state. A set of simple "break even" rocks and/or tapped mana-positive rocks would lessen the power gap between someone with fast mana and someone without. As it stands, with the possible exception of Sol Ring, if only due to how many precons include it, I do think fast mana would be worthy of a ban in a proposed Casual Commander banlist, simply due to how significantly it widens the gap between decks with or without it and how inaccessible it is. However, there's no denying fast mana is a staple of CEDH and seems to have plenty of counterplay, and from what I hear Sol Ring isn't even good there.
Overall, I simply think Casual Commander needs a separate, soft ban list to give a baseline for the most common rule zero discussions, while also leaving CEDH intact.

Hey Mark,
I asked this question before and it wasn’t answered, so here is my third attempt…
We all know that a zero-cost mana rock that taps for one mana is broken (i.e. Moxen) as well as a one-cost mana rock that taps for two mana (i.e. Sol Ring). But what about splitting the difference ; a one-cost mana rock that taps for one mana? What’s the chance this card could exist… or would this still be too broken to get printed? (Not counting “Springleaf Drum” as it requires an additional cost to produce mana.)
Not a play designer, but a 1-mana value rock would be too powerful even in eternal formats. I even double-checked with play design to make sure I somehow didn't have this wrong, and they said, no, I didn't.

Seb McKinnon Tribute deck
Seb McKinnon is one of my favorite artists in Magic, and I’d also say he has one of the most unique art styles. His work has a painterly quality that’s not found on most Magic cards today. And he has a penchant for the macabre, seeming to prefer depicting skeletons, vampires, demons and the like. So I set out to make an EDH deck made entirely of Seb’s cards (other than basic lands), and the results are surprisingly positive.

First of all, Aminatou’s a great commander, giving us draw and blink all on one card. Plus, she’s cheap to cast for a planeswalker, so we can rely on being able to cast her a few times every game. We’ll probably never set off her ultimate, but it might just save us in some games. The only other two commander choices by Seb right now are Bladewing the Risen and the newly-announced Prismatic Piper, so Aminatou is the obvious pick here (Seb’s only illustrated for one other dragon card, Herdchaser Dragon, as of this writing).
Scryfall tells us that Seb has art on 86 commander-legal cards in Esper colors (some of which are only on Magic Online or Arena), so I just had to pair down to 64-ish cards from there. And once I did, themes started emerging. Aminatou herself gets better with enters-the-battlefield effects, so I threw most of them in.
Looking more closely at them, there’s actually quite a few cards that generate or work with tokens too, so the token cards were the next obvious inclusion.
Seb’s also worked on several cards that return creatures from the graveyard, including the iconic Deliver Unto Evil, so recursion became another theme.
We don’t have a Nicol Bolas to work with, but Deliver is a fine card without it anyway.
Immortal Servitude in particular looks like a good win condition for the deck, along with Dirge of Dread and Debt to the Deathless.
And to make sure creatures get into our own graveyard, we’re running Entomb, Nagging Thoughts, and Stream of Thought, which also help thin the deck so we can find more lands.
There’s also a discard sub-theme that can help us fill up the yard between Archfiend of Ifnir, Pale Rider of Trostad, and a couple of other cards.
All in all, the deck has a great amount of creatures, removal, draw, and recursion. The one thing it’s lacking, though, is mana ramp. Hopefully, we can circumvent some bad draws with Aminatou’s plus ability so we don’t get totally mana screwed. And we do at least have access to Springleaf Drum and Unknown Shores for color fixing in a pinch.
It’s unfortunate that Seb hasn’t worked on more lands in our colors (although I’d rather not buy a $70 Secret Lair Misty Rainforest any time soon), but we can run Silent Clearing, which is awesome. And we might as well run Seb’s version of Secret Base at this point, because, well, just look at that outrageous art.
There’s a sub-theme of vampire tribal in the deck which I find amusing. Twilight Prophet is an extremely powerful card on its own, so it seemed worth it to run Seb’s other three vampires alongside it.
And there’s more than enough zombies in the deck for Compelling Deterrence and Necromancer’s Stockpile to work great as well.
Overall, I think this deck is surprisingly strong, and the art speaks for itself. It’s not amazingly powerful, but I think it could hold its own against most pre-constructed decks. It’s tough to make artist-themed decks like this work, but I think this is on the better end of the scale. Only way to know for sure is to playtest it. At about $100, it’s a little steep, but maybe worth it to someone that really loves Seb’s art. Plus, you could finish off the deck-oration with an awesome Seb McKinnon playmat and sleeves.

EDH Budget Picks: Emmara, Soul of the Accord
Welcome again to this week’s budget list. Tonight we’re discussing one of this year’s tiny leaders: Emmara. As the general of our deck indicates, we’re going for a token strategy with a lot of Inspired synergies. As always, our list will include no more than three cards above $2, and none above $5.
Our biggest concern is untap effects for Emmara. Tap abilities and anthems are abundant, enabling any deckbuilder to effectively fill those roles, so for the most part our list will focus on ways to untap your general for additional value. That said, we will take a look at a few efficient tap effects and an anthem.
#1: Quest for Renewal With Seedborn Muse hovering just outside our budget, Quest is probably your biggest concern when building the deck. Once it’s online, you’ll get free untaps each turn.
#2: Nature’s Chosen This simple aura is on our list really only for one reason: untapping. It has an additional effect, of course, which may prove useful.
#3: Springleaf Drum / Survivors’ Encampment / Holdout Settlement Our #3 picks are all essentially the same, but you’ll want all of them because of the synergies with your general. Drum will essentially be a 1 mana rock, while the two lands allow you to tap creatures to produce colored mana.
#4: Seeker of Skybreak Not a whole lot to say here. It’s just a basic creature untapper.
#5: Volrath’s Gardens While being limited to sorcery speed on this enchantment, the steady lifegain can keep you away from death for quite a while.
#6: Ebony Horse Again replacing a more expensive card on our list, Ebony Horse essentially functions the same as your other untappers, except it’s less vulnerable to creature removal.
#7: Honor-Worn Shaku #7 again falls under the tap effects. In short, it’s a Worn Powerstone that can be used immediately and taps your general.
#8: Glare of Subdual This is one of my favorites on our list. Tapping your creatures to tap down threatening attackers already offers a potent advantage in token decks, but getting the additional creature off of Emmara allows her to basically tap down two threats on her own.
#9: Collective Blessing Here near the end of our list we’ve got the only anthem that stands out enough to make it. While six mana is a lot, giving your creatures an immediate +3/+3 can turn the tide of the entire game.
#10: Puppet Strings And for our final pick, there’s really not much to say. It can either tap or untap a creature, depending on your need.
For filling out the rest of your deck, Theros block provides a number of Inspired synergies. You’ll also want to look into more tap and untap shenanigans, as well as creatures that benefit from being tapped or tapping your other creatures. Thanks for tuning in. 5th place at Modern PPTQ with TitanShift
Hello everyone, tonight I am writing up my tourney report for you. So, for those interested, it was hosted at Madness Games and Comics in Plano, TX on 7/22/17. Great turnout of 100 players, the meta out here is primarily Burn, TitanShift, Shadow variants, and Living End, so I planned my sideboard accordingly with the help of my teammates and the great staff at Madness. I ended the day at 6-2, coming in 5th,after losing in the Quarterfinals. Very stressful day, I can feel it in my muscles and neck lol but I wouldn’t trade it for the world. A little preface, I was on the draw every single game except for Top 8. So without further ado, let's begin! (Excuse my poor sentence structure, and me skipping boring parts by jumping straight to the end game. I also typed out the simplified names of the cards, and for those of you wondering why Wood Elves came out in almost every matchup, the second copy is my flex slot for the mainboard so it’s super easy to cut down to just one copy of the card.)
Round 1: BW Eldrazi Taxes 2-0
Game 1: My opponent starts off with Concealed Courtyard, and passes. I draw, fetch Stomping Ground, suspend Search. He proceeds by playing taxing creatures, me making land drops and playing ramp, but in the end Scapeshift for the win.
Game 2: He plays Eldrazi Temples, but doesn’t cast anything other than Wasteland Strangler the game, and I just get there with Volcanoes again.

Round 2: Affinity 2-1
Game 1: He gets the nuts and kills me by T4 with 2 Steel Overseers, Vault Skirge, and Signal Pest. GG.
Game 2: He loads up his board and has me at 4 on T4, I top deck Scapeshift for game with him at 18.
Game 3: This is the fun game. So he starts off by playing Inkmoth, Ornithopter, Memnite, Springleaf Drum, Mox Opal, and Cranial Plating. I kept a REAL SKETCH hand of 7 consisting of 2 Search for Tomorrow, 1 Wood Elves, 1 Scapeshift, 2 Sakura Tribe Elder, and 1 Stomping Ground, and INSTANTLY regret keeping the hand. I draw Explore, shock Stomping, suspend Search, pass. He draws and plays Darksteel Citadel, activates Inkmoth, equips Plating, swings for 7 infect. I literally needed a miracle, and I drew a Nature's Claim. I kept my cool, and passed. He draws, does the same thing, swings in and I Nature’s Claim the Inkmoth. He plays an artifact, and passes. Suspend comes off, I get a Mountain, and draw Ancient Grudge. I grudge the Plating, pass, and from there I AotG once, then Scapeshift for game after Bolting him. Really scary moment haha.

Round 3: Eldrazi Tron 2-1
Game 1: He starts off by playing Tower into map. And for those of you who aren’t too familiar with the matchup, let me just say this: Make land drops, Scapeshift, Volcanoes explode. GG.
Game 2: He manages to get Tron active, and lands an early Wurmcoil Engine on T3 with me missing some ramp spells, and can’t seem to find a Valakut.
Game 3: I suspend a search, he plays another map, and then it just comes down to me killing with Primeval Titan triggers. Not much too this matchup.

-1 Explore, -1 Wood Elves, -1 Anger of the Gods
Round 4: Esper Shadow 1-2
Game 1: At first I thought he was on some sort of Esper control build, when he Seized my Thoughts and took our KHE. Come my turn, land, Search, pass. He double Street Wraithed at the end of my turn, and I knew exactly what was about to happen. He starts his turn by playing Delta, and then following it up with another Thoughtseize, taking my Elder, and sticks a Death’s Shadow as a 3/3. Things got real hard after that, and I died shortly after when I couldn’t make ramp spells work.
Game 2: I get a Search going on T1, followed by another land drop into Sakura. He doesn’t seem to have any more discard past the first turn, and I quickly leveled him with Scapeshift.
Game 3: I have a strong start to my turns that consist of ramp into ramp. He has lots of discard this game, and when I land Primeval Titan, I thought that I would be in the clear as he has only 2 cards in hand. He Paths the Titan, I get a mountain, hit him for 3, and pass to him. He draws and plays Gurmag, and passes. I draw Primal Command, and attempt to make him gain 7 and put a Titan into my hand, but it’s met by a Stubborn Denial. He plays DS, shocks a land, and passes. I draw a Pact for turn, get Colossus from the deck and put it into play, and at my end step, he Paths it again, and then I died to a DS and Gurmag beats.

Round 5: Living End 2-0
Game 1: He starts off by going double Street Wraith, into shock land, pass turn. I play a Search, and pass, he cycles at my end step. My turns follow as such: Sakura, Wood Elves, land Scapeshift.
Game 2: Ramp, ramp, and hella ramp when he casts Demonic Dread on my Sakura, I sac in response, and when he casts Living End, I get back the one Elder I just sacked, and the one from a turn earlier. He passes, I sac both at end step, and shoot him down for 36 on my turn. This is a matchup we should not lose.

Round 6: Grixis Shadow 2-1
Game 1: He starts off with a Thoughtseize and proceeds to rip my hand apart from that turn forward, ultimately leaving me with nothing on T4, with only 3 lands. He kills me with DS.
Game 2: I start with a Search, and pass. He plays Wraith, into shockland, into Thoughtseize, and takes my Khalni I had in hand. I draw a Khalni for turn, and slam it down, and pass. He gives me a look like “Are you f*****g kidding me?” He draws and IoK’s me, and takes an Explore, plays a fetch and passes. Search comes off, land comes in, and triggers Khalni, I draw, play a fetch, trigger, cast Wood Elves, trigger again, and I don’t pop it yet. I pop at his end step, and cast Titan on my turn, and get the beats going. Games over in 2 turns.
Game 3: He leads off with an IoK and repeats the game plan from Game 1, except that this time I’m able to draw into my ramp, and come T5, I’m at 2, he’s at 6, I have no cards in hand, with 7 lands down, draw my card for turn, and it’s a Scapeshift. I ask what mana he has open, and he mutters something and I look and he’s tapped out. Cast Scapeshift, he extends the hand.

Round 7: Elves 2-1
He initially asked for a draw because that’s all he needed to get into Top 8, because he was 6th. I was 7th going into the last round, so I had to play. I declined his offer, and at the end of Game 1, he asked again, and I politely declined. So we played out the remainder of the round.
Game 1: His starting turns are pretty slow and his creatures are met by my bolts, and AotG. Mountains do him in eventually.
Game 2: He has a normal Elves start, and is able to hit me for lethal on T4 when I’m at 15.
Game 3: I start off with an untapped red source with a bolt in hand, because my turns from then till T3 were super slow, but I had a bolt, and an AotG in hand, with lands, so I would be ok. He plays a dork, and passes then I bolt it. I untap, draw Elder and pass. He draws and plays a Devoted Druid. I slam AotG because I know what kind of sick shit that card can do. He plays another dork, and a Visionary, and passes. The game gets a little stale for a couple turns, and then I find myself at 7, and he’s at 19. I need another one of them great miracles, and with 8 lands in play, I draw a Scapeshift, I cast the Scapeshift, and in response, he Chords for X=2, and I nearly shit myself and I really didn’t want to lose this way, because I have no idea what he could be getting. He grabs a Spellskite, let’s me proceed and when the Valakuts and Mountains come into play, he asks where the triggers will go. I say all to him, and so he redirects 9 of them to Skite, and extends the hand. Scariest moment of the day.

Game 1: Counters, counters, and more counters followed by me drawing all lands. Ironic.

Overall, I had a great experience with the deck, and this makes my second Top 8 out of three events in the last month with TitanShift. Magic Spelling with Jimi Berry
Welcome to Magic Spelling, a new blog series focused on Muscatine’s Magic: The Gathering community, and interviews with some of the players to get their point of view on the game.
Today we talked to local player Jimi Berry about his favorite deck archetype, Marvel Affinity. In his words, his deck has versatile aggression that can keep up early pressure with cards like Arcbound Ravager.

His deck keeps up creature pressure with Master of Etherium, Steel Overseer, and Cranial Plating, ensuring formidable stats on several creatures.
With a solid offense working better with more artifacts, Jimi likes to back up his early creatures with chip damage later, using Ghirapur Aether Grid and small artifacts a la Mox Opal, Springleaf Drum, and even tapping unequipped Cranial Platings and then quickly equipping them to keep opponent’s guessing as well as aching.
Not only is this Jimi’s favorite deck, but he’s confident it will be his primary deck for a long time.
