Spring has been a good guest this year. Staying as long as March in this tropical hell, the seasonal affectations have been kind. It is Sunday, and it is bright in its yolky glaze, while a steady wind brushes the roughened skin of the harsh winter. The sky is a swipe of the clear blue of the bluest coasts and the mango trees brimming with promises for the summer. It is a day to be out with families, out with friends, out with companions and lovers. It is one of those days where the afternoon sun allows you to soak in the warmth without being burnt. To go out for a swim, to sit by the lake and laze the afternoon away. Those who do not particularly want to be outdoors in fear of whisking away their preserved physical sanitations, they could simply sit on a porch, with lemonades and Iced potions and look at roses with the rose-colored glasses of life. You could pick up the book you have been meaning to read and sleep a little. Watch a movie perhaps, that has been all the rage for someone that Cupid has struck you with. Those in love could pick this beautiful afternoon and dissolve into the dusk together. Create a perfect Spring memory.

As for me, I have surrendered the thought of spending Sundays in companionship. I am absorbing the world around me, the comfort and solitude this day provides. I would have loved to go away somewhere, anywhere, by the lake, by the woods, by some dense shrubbery, by some lovely cafe by the city. I would have enjoyed this beautiful afternoon in the nest of my loved ones, on the dining table with my family, next to the friends of decades, and more. I would have enjoyed the simple pleasures of this life with perhaps, a little tinge of modern hedonism, had not life bound me by the chains of the mundane, the quotidian, and the melancholy.

So, I will spend this Sunday in remembrance, exerting the last ounce of energy to finish the ordeals of my occupational hazards, of academia and its wrath, and shirking away the thought of being loved on a Sunday.

March Reading Diary [03.03.2024]

It was 62 degrees yesterday afternoon so I took it upon myself to take my three- and two-year-old outside so they could expend all their pent up energy. And while they ran around the backyard screaming, shouting, and shrieking, I took the time to get in some reading. Honestly, one of my favorite ways to spend sunny, warm days like this in the spring & summer is to plop on a blanket in the grass and read while the kids are playing; this was just a taste of what's to come, and I can't wait. <3

The book I took out with me was The Collectors, edited by A.S. King. This is an anthology of short stories focused on collections & those who do the collecting - the collectors. This features stories from several well-known authors including Anna-Marie McLemore, A.S. King, Jason Reynolds, and many more. I thoroughly enjoyed this entirely collection (ha - see what I did there?) & ended up giving it a five star.

What are you currently reading? - Dear White authors: if you’re writing a person of color, please, for goodness sake, make their color explicit? Just. Don’t make your readers read between the lines? If you don’t come at it with a sledgehammer it’s not gonna break through the years of the social hegemony conditioning everyone to think of Whiteness as the default. It feels like you’re cheating out. It feels like you’re trying to have the cake from all sides and it all feels really disingenuous. - So yeah that’s my main problem with A Deadly Education. The author is twisting herself up into knots just so she can avoid explicitly saying her lead is a woman of color. Why? Idk. To have some plausible deniability? Not ruffle feathers? Not spend much effort researching? Beats me. It took me literally a hundred pages to finally realize that our main character is biracial. This is a three-hundred page book. This author dumped a whole academic article worth of exposition about One fictional mouth monster and she doesn’t have the time to spell out that our main lead is brown. My first reread of the year, and I couldn’t have picked a better book. I Capture The Castle is a wonderful, classic British novel set in the 1930s. It features Austenite heroines, Shakespearean misunderstandings, and Dickensian rags and riches. I truly love it; it’s funny and witty, with much pathos and self-awareness. If you’re an Anglophile like me and haven’t read it, please search it out and give it a shot.
