I have so many thoughts about the phantom and I’d like to briefly share one of them with you about how I believe the phantom’s curse/punishment continues on into OUR world!!! (Ace Attorney Dual Destinies spoilers ahead!)

Ik you guys know this but just for context’s sake: the phantom’s “identity” is one that is completely reliant on a lack of one, meaning that not a single character in-game acknowledges them by their real name or their real face. Even though this was initially an advantage for them, we can clearly see in their breakdown that this ended up backfiring big time.

So how does this continue on into the physical world? I guess it’s kinda obvious now, but it’s cause the player is also unable to acknowledge the phantom by their name or recognize their identity. We’re only able to refer to them as “the phantom.” Hell, even the title of “the phantom” isn’t one they took on themself, but rather one given to them by some random people in game. They are forever stuck as “the phantom,” both in and out of the game.

Also this connects to a lot of other phantom thoughts (that I won’t ramble on about for now to keep this post focused) but the name choice of “the phantom” is also really important here because it means that when we talk about them we’re not even referring to them as a human being.

All of this is why the ending to their breakdown is perfect! I understand why some people might find it unsatisfying to not see their real face or learn their real name, but having these details continue to be hidden just makes their self-inflicted curse continue on and makes us part of their punishment.

tldr: we only know the phantom as “the phantom” meaning even the player can’t acknowledge them with a real identity or as a person.

okay but.. that one passage in “the election of 1800” when burr is obviously hysterical.. when he’s given up his waiting strategy and has tried to go out there and take what he wants… when he thinks he’s outdone hamilton, finally. that scene itself is insane. it’s regression, almost, but it’s also progression.. cause we see burr morph into this totally different beast.

that’s the second time he snaps. the first being in “the room where it happens” on through “we know”.

but this time? this time is different. he’s desperately grabbing at straws now, doing his best impression of alexander in order to win the vote.

and he thinks he has it in the palm of his hand. he can almost taste it.

but still, he’s thwarted, which in my opinion makes the loss worse. you mean to tell him that even in putting on hamilton’s personality he still can’t win? you mean to tell him that hamilton isn’t happy with what he just did, even though that’s what hamilton’s being telling him to do for the entire musical?

that’s sick. that’s so fucking sick, and burr knows it. and he snaps again. third time’s the charm.
