In which The Doctor longs for the feeling of 'completeness' that romance promises - especially the way Tuvok speaks about it (the rare times he does). His wife is part of him, she's half of his soul, he feels incomplete without her and The Doctor, thinking that he can help ease both Tuvok's pain and his own, who wants to be desired, gets the idea to just...be T'Pel. Not all the time but hey, once in a while is better than not at all, isn't it? He's been thinking of T'Pel this whole time anyway, hasn't he? If anything he'll be thrilled! The idea that The Doctor can't be desired and whole as himself is slightly existential and embarrassing, but he pushes that aside because being loved by a flesh and blood Person is an experience he's desperate for as it would (in his mind) validate his own humanity. When Tuvok responds so negatively it's humiliating and deeply sad. It feels like something already extremely fragile was just shattered horrifically. Tuvok on the other hand is shocked and horrified by the sight of his wife being worn like a puppet over someone's hand. Not to mention the fact that her visage has appeared like an accusatory specter there in the room of a man he was intending to do something (sort of) intimate with. Though he was thinking of T'Pel the whole time, he's suddenly overwhelmed by shame and disgust at how his loyalty to her has slipped - not that he's become less loyal but that he's become more willing to allow others in that (while they could never in a million years replace her) do do something for him in place of what T'Pel could do. His loneliness and own desire to feel 'whole' again has (in his mind) allowed him to degrade himself and degrade his wife in the process. He immediately grabs for the reins, reaching for calm in the midst of the storm. Wait...wait...wait...Then he opens his eyes again. PS: It's important for you to know that because The Doctor doesn't know what T'Pel sounds like it's just his own voice coming out of her body.
