• Despite his caring and positive demeanor, there was no mistaking that he was by far and away the hardest working person you knew.
• He would brush off your concerns with an effervescent smile and a cheerful greeting, but you knew it came at the expense of his own well-being.
• You hated that everyone seemed to assume he was fine all the time when he clearly wasn’t.
• Because most didn’t seem to be aware of the mental and physical tolls missions were taking on him, you found yourself not caring much about them in return. Why should you?
• Though you did feel less of an indifference toward Viper of all agents, perhaps because she understood.
• “He’s one man, and he’s exhausted.”
• But even in moments of extreme weakness, Sova never fails to comfort you when he really should be putting himself first.
• You just mean that much to him.
After a certain point, working in the Protocol made the occurrence of death feel concerningly normal. It was all the same, wasn’t it? An injury incurred or a life lost, only for it to be restored a short while later.
It didn’t matter whether you lived on Earth-1 or Earth-2; everyone seemed to be stuck in their own little loops, engaged in taxing battles, doomed to repeat the same thing all over again the next day.
Sometimes you needed a reminder of why you were doing this, though you weren’t prepared for it to be an ugly one.
Four down, one to go...
You crept quietly around the base of the perimeter, your Spectre at the ready. The last opponent was proving hard to eliminate.
You heard a single shot nearby. Making your way toward the source of the sound, you peered around the corner to see your teammate Breach laying still on the ground. You quickly scanned the area before approaching, kneeling down to feel his pulse. It was weak, but it was there. You sighed irritably, taking ahold of your comm with one hand.
“Requesting aid for Breach.” You dropped your location a second later.
“Roger,” came Sage’s serene voice. “I’m on my way. Stay with him-”
“No,” you interrupted curtly, already rising to your feet. “We still have a mission to do and me staying with him isn’t going to change anything.”
You tuned out her protests, on the move again with grim determination. It wasn’t long before you came across Sova, approaching from the opposite corner. Instinctually, you both raised your guns at one another before realizing you were on the same side.
“Any sign of them?” He murmured as you met in the middle.
“Negative.” You shook your head.
“Perhaps two heads are better than one, here. If you watch my flank, I can deploy-”

He never got to finish his sentence. This gunshot rang much louder than the last. Your eyes widened as the hunter was thrown off his feet and propelled forward with a gasp, blood spurting from his mouth. Pulling him to your chest, you caught him with one arm, swinging your weapon up and flicking the perpetrator with the other.
You didn’t even care who they were, so long as they were dead. When it was clear they were, you called it in, requested healing and turned your attention back to the injured man leaning on you.
“Sova...” You sunk to the ground holding him, your heart thundering in your ears as the skin of the person you cared most about turned ashen in a matter of moments. You guided his head into your lap. With trembling hands, you brushed his hair back from his face, unable to think clearly as the ground around him stained a deep red.
You pulled back briefly and yanked off your jacket, applying pressure to the Russian’s wound. His eyes never left you, and not once did he flinch under your touch. “You’re safe, so rest a little. I’m here and you’re going to be okay.” You kept looking frantically around. What was taking the help so long?
He mustered his remaining energy into covering your hands with his. He smiled weakly.
“I'm not tired. Are you?” You knew he was just trying to comfort you, as his eyelids were getting droopier by the second. You couldn’t help but give an exasperated smile at his efforts.
As Sage and Brimstone jogged around the corner, you hugged the blonde a little closer one last time before reluctantly letting him go, an action that didn’t go unnoticed by either of the agents. They exchanged a knowing look.

Prologue - Chapter 1 - Chapter 2
Sorry it’s been like years and years since I’ve updated! I promise I’ll try to be more consistent from now on. Should be easier now that I’ve drawn up an outline for myself! Also, welcome to Birthday Week everyone! Stay tuned for chapter updates all week long!

I didn’t remember waking up. But there I was, staring at the ceiling, my body lying awkwardly against the couch cushions as two familiar voices prattled on in the background. I shifted my weight, trying to sit up. The sofa was the kind that would swallow you as you moved, acting like quicksand as I struggled to get my bearings. Once I had sat up, I began rolling out my right shoulder, looking around the room. I was back in Mr. Borg’s office- He and Cryptor were huddled around his computer while angrily debating something.
“Can’t you tell what it’s doing?”
“I’ve told you! The system can’t see it! Security hasn’t been breached; it says everything is clear!”
It was then that I remembered what had knocked me out in the first place. I lifted my hand, examining my finger. There was still a small puncture wound, but other than that, no trace of anything being wrong.
“What happened?” I asked, interrupting their discussion.
“Ah, sleeping beauty finally awakes from pricking her finger.” Cryptor chuckled, turning to look at me.
“Drew! Are you alright?” Mr. Borg asked, frantically turning around, wheeling himself towards me. “The serum shouldn’t have harmed you. You might feel a bit dizzy though.”
“I’m fine,” I assured him as he reached my side. “But what was that?”
“Just an emergency security measure. Why it activated, we’re still not sure,” He sighed.
“Whatever the reason, it’s now somehow spread to the rest of the tower security.” Cryptor chimed in, still at the computer at the far side of the room.
“What?!” I stood up, surprised to feel my feet touch the floor. My shoes. Where were my shoes?
“We’re stuck in lockdown mode, communication is shot, and the lights have been on and off for the past hour or so,” Cryptor explained.
I found my heels around the corner of the couch, quickly slipping them on as I looked at Mr. Borg. “I didn’t even know we had an elevator security feature like that. Since when has it been installed?”
He smiled. “Oh, it was Pixal’s idea!” Of course it was. “We had it installed just after she left. I guess I just forgot to mention it to you. I never expected to use it.” I stood up, finding my balance again. “I really am sorry dear.”
“It’s alright,” I dismissed it. Thanks a lot, Pixal. Your brilliant security system prevented your replacement from checking security. “We just need to figure out why it happened.” I started walking over towards Cryptor at the main computer. “You’re sure there’s no way to trace whatever’s gotten into the system?”
“Borg was the only one able to access the elevator security specs, none the less able to activate them. Whatever has taken control of the tower is so deep into the system that the tower isn’t even processing any of its changes.” Cryptor scrolled through the security screens, all systems reading normal.
“It’s like it’s invisible,” I marveled. “I’ve never seen anything like it.”
Mr. Borg sighed, wheeling up to us. “I have.”
“When?” Cryptor asked, both our eyes now glued to him.
Cyrus stared at the screen for a moment, as if looking for other possibilities. “The one thing I know of that behaved like this when it breached the tower’s system… was the Overlord.”
Cryptor and I glanced at each other.
“No… no, this can’t be the Overlord,” I insisted. “There’s no way! We’re done with that! Zane defeated him years ago, even if there was a remnant of him in the system, we would have caught it by now… right?”
“I don’t know,” Cryptor refuted. “If it’s behaving like the Overlord, that means it entered the system the same way the Overlord did. How did the Overlord enter the system again? We built the building on top of his remains!” He stressed. “We haven’t moved the building, we haven’t rebuilt the foundations, we haven’t even expanded! Unless there are some other dead guys we built on top of that we didn’t know about the first time, there aren’t really any other options, are there?”
“Drew has a point though,” Cyrus shook his head. “After that final battle, Pixal and I searched countless times for any trace left of the Overlord. We found nothing.”
“As great of a job I’m sure Pixal did,” Cryptor rolled his eyes. “I don’t see what else it could be. Unless of course you have some secret cemetery under the floorboards you’re not telling me about.”
“No, but we do have a basement,” I reasoned.
“So?” Cryptor pressed.
“So, anything in the basement would technically be at the same level the Overlord was when construction began. If anything were destroyed and left down there, there’s a chance something similar to the Overlord could have happened.”
“Oh no…” Mr. Borg leaned back in his chair.
“What? What’s in the basement?” Cryptor asked.
“...The furnace.”
I could feel my pulse accelerate as a host of possibilities flooded my mind. “The furnace that we’ve used to destroy every piece of malfunctioning tech we’ve ever built?! That’s not to mention a good portion of Overlord era tech as well.” I hung my hands on my head and began pacing the room. “Oh, this is great. This is fantastic! I’m sure none of the failed inventions we’ve burned alive would have any reason to seek revenge on us!”
“So, it could be literally anything?” Cryptor clarified.
“And failed computer code is known for being rational and easy to deal with, right?” I rambled. “You know, at least if it were the Overlord, we would know how to begin to deal with it!”
“Drew, it’s okay.” Mr. Borg tried to calm me. “We’ll figure this out. I’m sure it’s not as bad as we’re making it out to be.”
“Isn’t it?” I asked, putting my hands on my hips. “Because we’re currently trapped, alone, in a hundred story building with one of the best security systems in the world, being controlled by who knows what that has it in for us with no hope of rescue because, may I remind you, there’s a raging freak snow storm going on outside!”
And as if on cue, just then, the lights cut out.
“Great,” Cryptor sighed. “Now we’ve made it mad.”
“Look, if it can cut power to the lights, it can cut power to anything else.” Mr. Borg reasoned. “Let’s use what we have while we still can. I’m going to try some more abstract back door protocols to try and see if we can get back any sort of control. If you two want to look for any notes Pixal left about the security system, digital or otherwise, that would be great.”
“Pixal?” Cryptor asked. “What, she design the security system too?”
“No,” Mr. Borg responded. “But she knew it inside and out. I would trust anything she might have mentioned in the project notes.”
I took a few deep breaths, calming myself down. Yes, this was all crazy, but we didn’t know anything for sure yet, and there was still time to find answers. “Okay, we can do this,” I sighed, making my way over to my desk.
“All hail Pixal, the all-knowing goddess of Borg Tower,” Cryptor mumbled.
I chuckled a bit as he followed me over to my desk. “Stop it.”
“I swear it’s like the hundredth time he’s mentioned her today.”
“He’s coping.” I waved it off, typing in my password. “She was his right hand last time something like this happened. It only makes sense he’d try and lean on her again.”
“I guess,” he shrugged.
“Here, you check the digital security notes, I’ll see if I can find the original paper copies.” I gestured to my computer and opened my desk drawer, pulling a small key out from the back.
“Sounds good.” He sat down, getting his bearings. I walked over to the wall of filing cabinets to my left looking up and down the tiny faded labels for the drawer I was looking for.
“Ticking. Chilled. Sweet. Dispersed. Detached. Floating. Silver. What is this?” Cryptor asked.
“It’s my daily sticky note.” I explained, opening my first suspected drawer.
“What exactly does that mean?” he pried.
“Oh just… words that come to me throughout the day. By the time I leave work I have a sort of mood-of-the-day word cloud.” I pulled out the first file labeled simply ‘plans’. This place really needs a better naming system.
“Huh…” Cryptor thought for a moment before I heard a pen click. “I think you’re missing a few words on here.”
“No, I really don’t think I am.” I turned around to look at him this time, seeing where this was going.
“Oh, it’s okay, I’ll just add them for you here real quick.” He waved it off playfully. “How about handsome stranger.” I found myself suppressing laughs as he continued to write. “I think that one’s extremely accurate, and, you know, important to at least mention. Um… mistakenly drugged. I think that was a pretty big part of your day so far. And then, how about Hijacked. See, it works on two levels because of the whole tower thing, but also... what I’m doing right now,” He smiled coyly.
“Now that you mention it, I do have a few words you could add.” I moved forward, leaning on the side of the desk. “ How about Frustration. Annoyance. Total waste of time. Maybe even Not as clever as he thinks.”
“I don’t know, that last one seems a bit wordy to me.”
“No, I think that one’s the most important one,” I chuckled.
“Oh! Cryptor!” Mr. Borg called from the other side of the room, interrupting us. “Your arm! I’ll finish the redesign on it and maybe we can get it built before anything else goes wrong!”
“You figure out what was wrong with it?” He asked.
“I’m pretty sure it was a problem with the connection rotation, so it shouldn’t take long to fix.” Mr. Borg assured him.
“Let’s do it then,” Cryptor agreed, Mr. Borg quickly returning to his computer to finish the plans.
“He’s really glad you’re here you know,” I told him, my voice a bit hushed. “He was so worried you wouldn’t even come.”
“Well, for what it’s worth,” he smiled. “Even if whatever’s going on in this building ends up killing us… I think I’m still glad I showed up.”

DE constraints in the yield environment:
Impermanent loss:
Automated Market Makers (AMMs) like Uniswap offer their user lucrative rewards and the ability to collect trading fees paid by decentralized exchange users by supplying their money into liquidity pools. This creates a good source of passive income for them that does not depend on market sentiments.
However, there’s a severe risk involved with the act, during sharp market moves users can lose all of their money in the liquidity pool. This risk, known as imperative loss, is not intuitive but the liquidity providers should make sure that they understand it. The thing is that by participating in the liquidity pools, users cannot benefit from a price movement and actually can bear losses if the market value of the asset goes down. The problem comes from the fact that AMMs do not update their prices automatically in line with the market movements. This peculiarity creates arbitrage opportunities and poses significant risks to liquidity providers. For example if a token drops by 50% in value on a centralised exchange, the change is not readily visible on the Dex platforms. Thus, the arbitrage traders have a small window in which
they can sell their tokens on the Dex at an inflated price. The difference is then covered by the liquidity pools, thus when the price drops they incur huge losses.
Liquidity risks:
In a traditional financial environment, liquidity is provided by banks through the cash deposits made by their customers. They then make money off of it by lending and investing that money. In a De-Fi ecosystem the middleman i.e. the bank is cut out of the process, and the users have direct access to each other to negotiate better deals in a leaner, cheaper and transparent way. However, there’s also a liquidation risk involved with the practice, if the price of the collateral falls below the loan amount, it gets liquidated resulting in a loss for the user. For example, if a user takes out a loan on an open source De-Fi protocol in BTC and lends it taking ETH as collateral, a significant BTC price increase will create liquidation risk as the value of the ETH token provided as collateral will be less than the value of the borrowed BTC. The same thing happens if ETH falls while the BTC price stays the same.
High gas costs:
High gas costs currently is the biggest hurdle in the adoption of DeFi. Users on De-Fi are subjected to really high gas fees that make it really hard to make multiple transactions at a time. With increasing liquidity locked in the DeFi ecosystem the transactions executed on the Etherege network also increase which causes the gas fees to spike up, making yield farming unrealistic for
average investors as most of the gains are absorbed in these gas fees which can go up 100x during peak season.

Out of Luck
Kyle scheduled everything perfectly. He had asked Reyna for an evening off so he could have dinner with his family, but bailed on them last minute. He sighted Octavian’s reappearance as the cause for him being too busy and promised he would visit them soon to prevent any further questions. With Reyna thinking he was with his family and his family thinking he was at Camp, Kyle had the perfect opportunity to make the trip into New Rome with no one the wiser. It wasn’t that he thought Reyna would forbid him to go, but he preferred not to worry her. Kyle gripped his lucky paperclip tightly in his hand as he navigated outside of his usual path through New Rome. The paperclip hadn’t been working as strongly lately and Kyle needed all the luck he could get.
Octavian’s family lived in an older section of the city where the established families had remained over the years so they could keep an eye on things, almost like keeping a thumb to a pulse. Kyle’s family, on the other hand, lived in one of the newer expansions away from the heart of the city, but Kyle knew New Rome like the back of his hand after years of delivering newspapers as a kid. It didn’t take him long to find the opulent villa that seemed to think it was superior to the others around it. Yeah, that was the one he was looking for. Kyle made sure no one was watching him and slipped around to the back of the house, out of view from anyone passing by on the street. He called softly for Quirinus, one of the family’s Lares and waited in silence, hoping no one inside heard him. He didn’t have to wait long before a glowing purple figure emerged from the wall to face him.
“Who are you?” Quirinus sneered and Kyle saw the family resemblance Tony was blessed not to have inherited. Kyle introduced himself using his full title, hoping to impress the Lar by following traditional protocol. It seemed to work because the Quirinus’ facial features softened from a scowl to a sneer. “Ah yes, I know you, your family published that article about young Octavian’s return? Such a disgrace to our family’s legacy.” The Lar shook his head in disgust. Kyle gave his lucky paperclip a squeeze, thanking Tyche or Fortuna or whoever for his good luck. “Have you heard how the Senate voted?” Kyle asked and Quirinus went on to lecture him about how today’s Senate was too lenient and back in his day Octavian would have been fed to the weasels yadda yadda.
“You’re right, it was too easy. Listen, Octavian is a disgrace to your family and the Senate vote is an embarrassment to us all. On your honor as a retired member of the Legion, can you tell me that your family didn’t have anything to do with it?” The Lar studied Kyle for a few moments, obviously struggling between duty to his family and the Legion before he answered. “No, nothing outside of calling in a few favors. Julian campaigned quite well, actually…” and Quirinus began bragging about the family’s pride and joy. Kyle tuned him out, his heart sinking. There was no way the Senate honestly voted in favor of Octavian, maybe Quirinus was mistaken, maybe Kyle should break into Julian’s office after all, maybe- “Well well well, looks like we’ve got a visitor.”
Kyle groaned internally as he saw three of Octavian’s meanest cousins blocking his path to the street. They weren’t supposed to be here, they lived across town and Kyle hadn’t seen them since they retired from the Legion years ago. “We saw that article in the paper the other day.” One of them sneered. “We didn’t like it.” Of course they didn’t. At least Quirinus had. Kyle glanced at toward where the Lar had been planning to talk his way out of this one but the Lar had vanished. Typical. “Yeah, well everyone’s a critic nowadays. I was- uh- just coming to congratulate your family on the Senate vote…. So congrats I guess. I’ll see you guys around.” Kyle tried to slip past them but strong arms shoved him backward, holding him against the smooth stone of the house.
“What a coincidence, Uncle Julian invited us for dinner to celebrate. Glad you could join us Jensen.” To Kyle’s credit, he managed to slip away when one of the cousins threw the first punch and made it a few paces toward the street before rough hands dragged him back behind the house. Kyle struggled and fought them the entire way but it was no use. He was a good fighter but he was sorely outmatched and in the end he just tried his best to shield himself from the worst of the hits. Fists slammed into his face, his chest, his sides. Knees met his gut and he was winded, his head pounded, his ribs ached and eventually, to his dismay, his knees buckled and he crumpled to the ground. His vision turned spotty and he fought to stay conscious, not noticing how he was no longer under attack. A strong hand gripped his arm and dragged him to his feet and Kyle raised his own fists, preparing for a second round but dropped them in disbelief when he came face to face with “Mike?”

Summoner AU #2
A beast summon was easy to understand. Its strength was in its form. A bear was a lumbering giant, capable of swinging its paws and destroying foes left and right. Wolves and foxes would be swift. And other things perhaps a combination of the two.
But what was Death? Its true nature was confusing. Was there something on the other side? Would it be the souls of the damned reaching out with skeletal hands to drag Winter’s foes into the underworld? Was she immune to dying? For all her thoughts and pondering, though, she could arrive at no solid conclusion.
Her gaze turned to the bird, who was perched on her windowsill, eyes watching the lights of the city that her family manor overlooked.
That was the other problem. Summons appeared and disappeared at their owner’s command. They did their task and left when no longer needed. This one did not. In fact, try as she might, the crow refused to leave this plane of existence. While he wasn’t by her side at all times, for the past two days since the summoning rite she could feel that he was there.
She finally let out an exasperated sigh and asked the question that was on her mind. “Why are you still here?”
“It’s like I said. I know all names, and I know when they shall expire.” The bird spared her a small glance before ruffling its feathers and turning away. “I am a constant of the world. Why should I leave what is already my home?”
“Because that is how it is for hunters,” Winter spoke, annoyance ringing in her voice. “You obey me because you are my summon.”
There was a loud squawk from the bird. “Obey you?” The crow hopped back into the room, looking at Winter. Slowly, his true form reared its head and his red eyes focused on her. “What makes you think that you can command me?”
“I can demand what I wish from you,” she snarled back. “You are below me.”
“Hmph.” She watched as a thin smile curled across his lips. “Tell me, Winter, what do you think of your father?”
It caught her off guard. How did her father come into the task of summoning for her? But as she thought of it more and more, he had everything to do with it. It was he that pushed her onto the course of being a hunter after seeing the image she could display for the company. He was the whole reason why this bird was taunting her. But as her mind drifted, she began to see his real question.
“Your father is known to have a… heavy hand at times. You’ve seen how he is with the servants, the Faunus workers. Not even Whitley, his undeniable favorite, was spared at times. It casts a beautiful picture of what he’s working towards.”
“And with that in mind,” he placidly continued, “would you wish death upon your father?”
“What? No, that’s-”
“Oh, but you have.” The grin grew wider.
A damning silence filled the air.
“If you were truly in control of that power, could you withhold your action until the time was right? Can you wait for the last curtain to fall? Or would you take fate into your hands and force a conclusion?”
To this Winter had no answer, and her gaze fell to the floor. There was a scratchy laugh, and the bird began to fade.
“Tomorrow, then, I shall play the part. Let us see how well you handle Death tomorrow.”
Sleep did not come to her until late that night. Tomorrow was supposed to be her first training session with her summon, where she would be taught to handle her summon alongside other hunters. The class was not to be a long course, a week at most. And while it was something she had looked forward to, it was not to be without stigma.
These classes were not private, as training hunters followed strict processes and protocols. She would be the oldest in her class by five years.

When Winter awoke, the bird was nowhere in sight and neither was she able to feel his presence like the other days. At this she took a deep breath, bringing a hand to her forehead. It was as if their last conversation was just a dream. She rose from bed, stretching her arms and moving to the restroom.
But as she looked into the mirror, a gasp escaped her throat. There was a literal white fire burning in her chest. Her hands flew up, matting down the sleeping gown against her skin. But all it did was obscure her vision of the flame. There was no heat, just light, but it felt large and bright.
What was this?
“What am I seeing here?”
There was no response, only silence. Her mouth opened to speak again, but the family servant had come and knocked on her door, beckoning to come to breakfast. There was no time for discovery. Throwing on her clothes and moving to the dining hall, she saw that a similar flame existed beneath the skins of every person that she met. Some were smaller than others, but all had it. Her sister and brother had one, whose flame was larger than hers by a smaller margin. Her father was not exempt as well, but his flame was smaller as he ate and talked of daily agendas. It was a more still fire, not thrashing as wildly as her siblings, but it was still strong.
What were these flames? It was on her mind as the family chauffeur drove her to the training hall, unanswered by the bird. But when she stepped into the training hall, where several other hunters were already waiting, her eyes fell upon another whose body held a tiny flame that struggled to stay alight.
Winter’s eyes were drawn to the girl, whose red cape hung from her shoulders atop of a black faux corset and skirt. She was diminutive, but her silver eyes wandered back and forth across the room, anxious yet excited. Right before Winter could turn away, the girl locked eyes with her and did her best to smile at the older woman.
“H-Hi, I’m Ruby Rose. What’s your name?”
“... Winter.”

The rest of the training was everything she had expected. It was a controlled environment, where they were taught the basics of summon control before facing smaller Grimm under strict supervision. Others in the room also controlled beasts, and Ruby was no exception with a large, decorated falcon, one of the fastest birds known to man that fell in tune with her semblance of speed. Most of the hunters, who had started training at the same time at the same age as she started, seemed to easily pick up the strengths that came with their summons.
Winter wanted to believe that they were simply more in tune with them because they have had longer to commune with them. When it was her turn to summon and fight with the crow, the bird came out at her command. But how did one fight at the same side of Death?
While she herself fought perfectly, her performance in conjunction to the bird was ranked dismally low. There were no clear signs that the crow had helped her. No extra strengths granted to her, no efforts from the bird to strike with her.
She left the training ashamed and angered, knowing that her father would want to know how it all went. Ruby had tried to cheer her up, stating that it took her some time to learn how to fight with Braer, her summon. And while Winter found herself smiling at the efforts it did little to help her in the end.
It was clear that despite the fact that she could see flames inside of people, the crow had offered her little else she could recognize. As soon as she arrived at home, she had shut herself in her room, fuming and hurt.
They were supposed to work together. And here he had simply humiliated her.
“Death,” she nearly growled. “Come out.”
Whoosh
A small blue circle at her side and the crow flew out, fluttering his wings and landing onto the edge of her nightstand. She didn’t even need to look up at his true form to know that there would be a smile on it. “So you obey me now.”
He said nothing, but the bird ruffled its feathers and reared its head back, as if in a silent laugh of haughtiness.
“Why didn’t you work with me in that training?”
“Because you were not prepared,” he responded. “Death is not to be commanded so easily, not to be thrown around like a mere word. Age-old kings might attest that such follies are to be avoided, though whether such advice will be helpful by then is another matter.”
“Not prepared?” Rage. Seething anger. Gritted teeth. She was amazed by the fact that she was not yelling. “I have been waiting for more than seven years to begin this training, and you say that I’m not ready?”
“Yes. You are not ready.” The crow and man stared at her with their red eyes. “You do not even know what I have given you today. Or perhaps you are just denying it, don’t want to believe what that means for young Miss Ruby Rose.”
Winter was getting somewhere now. Some rage died away, but it was replaced by a mad eagerness. “The flames. What do they mean?”
“It’s simple. Think about it,” there was a small pause, and Winter felt her heart shudder, “of all you have seen, those who are young have a strong flame. The older have a smaller one. And what is the one thing associated with old age?”
She gulped, not speaking, all contempt dying out in realization. “The fact that they are near death.”
The bird nodded. “When the flame is extinguished, their life ends.”
It hit her like a truck. Her sister and brother were fine - their flames were strong. Her father would live, though for how much longer she was unsure. But Ruby, her flame-
“No!” she cried out, desperation rising within her throat, pulsing in her veins. “You can’t just take her! She’s so young, she’s hardly even lived her life! Why her?” fingers curled into fists, nails biting into her palm. All she could think of was the lost innocence. “Why Ruby?”
“I do not decide who is taken and for what reason,” the bird harshly interrupted her. “I only know who is next and when.”
“Then tell me. Tell me when it will happen and I-”
There was suddenly a loud wail coming from the bird, and Winter felt herself stumbling back. Her eyes rose to the ethereal man, but instead of skin and red eyes she was greeted by bones and rotting flesh, tattered rags.
But the red eyes were still there, staring deeply into her. She found herself up against her dresser.
“Do you even know what you are asking of?” it yelled. “You are asking to spare a girl of her death.” The wraith drew closer, extending his hand toward her, boned fingers accusing her as the voice grew low. “But what of your sister or brother?”
“If you could know when, where, and how their deaths would come, you would be driven mad. A lifetime of ‘saving’ them, and to what extent? Who do you sacrifice? What do you pay to keep them alive for another day? If every time you saved your sister you discovered that she will die the next day, how long would you really last?”
The wraith receded back to where the bird was, skin once again regaining color, covering bone, clothes mending. It was that man again. But all Winter could do with the realization was crumple to her knees, falling to the side of the dresser.
It was futile to fight death.
“Is…” a small tremble in her voice broke through her lips. “Is there truly no way?”
The man spoke slowly this time, his voice once again a little aged, like a man who had seen too much. “I am equal unto humanity and everything that walks this earth. All shall pass through my gates, and I turn none away. And that,” he concluded, “is why you will not command me. Your human heart is not ready.”
She watched as her goals as a huntress began to crumble. She wouldn’t save lives. She would destroy Grimm, but she already knew who would be saved and who would not. But if this was what her power was, if she were to know and not be able to act in her full capacity-
Winter rose to her feet. “Death,” she began to speak, watching the man straighten a little as she addressed him fully. “My role as a huntress is to save lives. As my summon, it is your task to assist with that. Knowing who will pass and who will live due to our effort or lack thereof would be valuable. But at the same time… I wonder if I can truly live with such a conscience.”
She looked up at his red eyes, doing her best to keep her back straight. “Show me what the flames in this city look like. Let me see them so I can know how many lives I am responsible for as a huntress.”
With no more words, the man pointed to the window of her room before retreating back into the bird. But before he did so, he gave her another smile, a gentler one compared to his smirks. The bird flew to her shoulder as she walked to the glass and threw it open.
The city was bathed in stars and she felt tiny, lost in the sea of night dancing upon the earth. The flames twinkled, perhaps some splitting or disappearing, Winter was unable to tell.
But it was beautiful, and she realized that no matter how many lives would be lost in her time as a huntress there would still be a sea of lives she would be able to protect.
“Now,” the crow spoke, “we are ready to begin working with another.”
Two days later, Ruby Rose was reported missing in action.

Even basic synth plugins have enough parameters to get completely lost.
But almost all synthesizers are made up of similar component functions.

This article is a complete glossary of synthesizer terms. From analog to wavetable, here’s every synth definition you’ll ever need.
Synth Glossary
2-Pole/4-pole – The slope of a synthesizers low pass filter. 2-pole is the gentler 12 dB/octave slope and 4-pole is the more common 24 dB/octave type.
Additive Synthesis – Additive synthesis is a method of generating sound that works by combining multiple sine waves together.
Large numbers of sine waves of different frequencies are required to approximate complex timbres.
Aftertouch – Aftertouch is an additional dimension for adding expression to MIDI information.
Aftertouch is entered by applying pressure to held notes after the notes have already been struck.
Aftertouch is commonly used to create vibrato or other musical gestures that add to the expressiveness of a performance.
Algorithm – An algorithm is an configuration of operators in an FM synthesizer.
Different algorithms rearrange the order of carrier and modulator waves inside the synthesis engine to produce different sonic textures.
Amplitude – Amplitude is the intensity, or volume of a waveform.
If you’re looking at a waveform in a DAW or on an oscilloscope, amplitude will be represented on the y-axis and frequency will be represented on the x-axis.
Envelope generators shape your sound’s amplitude characteristics over type to create expressive tones.

Analog – Analog synthesizers create sound using traditional electronics like transistors, op-amps and ICs.
A synthesizer can be considered analog if its audio signal path contains no digital elements.
Analog synths can still contain digital preset management systems, or DCOs.
AM – AM stands for amplitude modulation. Amplitude modulation occurs when the amplifier section of a synthesizer is modulated by an LFO.
Amplitude modulation is often used for tremolo effects.
Arpeggiator – An arpeggiator is a device or plugin that takes a series of notes at its input and cycles through them in a predetermined pattern at the rate defined by a MIDI or CV clock signal.
Band Pass Filter/BPF – A band pass filter is a type of filter that cuts all frequencies except those in a narrow band of frequencies.
Carrier wave – A carrier wave provides the signal for a modulator to act on in an FM synthesizer. Modulators and carriers can be arranged in various configurations known as algorithms.
Clock – Clock is the signal that controls the timing of the functions in a synthesizer. Clock can be supplied by MIDI or control voltage.
Control Voltage – Control Voltage is the electrical signal that analog synthesizers use to communicate between modules such as VCOs, VCFs and VCAs
Cutoff Frequency – Cutoff frequency is the pitch at which a filter begins attenuating frequency content.
For a low-pass filter, the cutoff frequency defines where the high frequencies will begin decreasing in intensity.
DCO – DCO stands for digitally controlled oscillator. Early analog VCOs were expensive and could not always maintain stable pitch.
To produce affordable polyphonic synths that stayed in tune, engineers developed analog oscillators whose pitch could be controlled by a digital source.
These oscillators are still 100% analog—using DCOs does not make a synth a hybrid.
Digital – Digital synthesis takes place entirely within a digital processor. The main methods of digital sound generation are FM synthesis and wavetable synthesis.
Envelope generator – An envelope generator controls how a signal evolves over time. Envelope typically contain controls for attack, decay, sustain and release.
When connected to a VCA, an envelope generator creates the variation in amplitude that gives a sound its identity.
But envelope generators aren’t just for synth loudness. They can be a modulation source for almost any destination you can think of.
Eurorack – Eurorack is a popular format for synth modules in a modular system.
The standard specifications for power and connectivity allow you to build a custom system made up modules from many different manufacturers.
Frequency – Frequency is the number of cycles of a waveform per unit time. Frequency is measured in hertz (cycles per second) for audio signals.
For signals in the audio range, frequency is perceived as pitch.
For signals in the audio range, frequency is perceived as pitch.
FM – FM stands for Frequency Modulation. It’s a method of sound synthesis that creates complex timbres by modulating the frequency of one tone (the carrier) with another one (the modulator).
FM synthesis is responsible for the iconic sound of the Yamaha DX7—the synth that defined the sound of 80s pop.
Gate – Gate is simple on/off messages communicated with control voltage. Gate signals are most commonly used to control note on/off messages from the keyboards of analog synthesizers.
High Pass Filter/HPF – A high pass filter is a type of filter that allows only frequencies above the cutoff frequency to pass. A high pass filter can be thought of as a low cut.
Keytracking – Keytracking changes a patch’s parameters depending on the pitch of the notes being played.
It’s most commonly used to balance the sound of the synth across its entire range.
Keytracking can have positive or negative values that determine whether a parameter increases depending on key position.
The most common application for keytracking is a synthesizer’s filter or VCF.
Lead – A lead is a type of synth patch for creating main melodies. Leads are typically monophonic.
They often have a harmonically rich quality that allows them to stand out in a mix.
LFO – LFO stands for Low Frequency Oscillator. It creates a signal the same way the VCO does except much lower in frequency.
An LFO’s frequency range is so low that it doesn’t sound like a distinct tone like a regular oscillator. Instead the LFO is used as a modulator to change the characteristics of a sound.
Modulating a parameter such as the VCO frequency or VCF cutoff creates movement and action within a synthesizer sound.
Low Pass Filter/LPF – LPF stands for Low Pass Filter. A low pass filter is named for the frequencies it allows through rather than the ones it cuts. That means a low pass is actually a high cut.
Low pass filters take the trebly edge off of aggressive tones like square waves. They’re one of the main tools for shaping frequency content in subtractive synthesis.
MIDI– MIDI stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface. It’s the digital protocol that allows music gear made by different manufacturers to communicate.
Unlike CV, MIDI can transmit a huge amount of information about a musical performance. Today MIDI is used in almost all synthesizers and digital music gear—it’s an essential piece of music tech!
Mixer – A synthesizer mixer is used to combine the signals from different oscillators or sections of the synth.
Mod Matrix – A mod matrix, or modulation matrix is a synth architecture feature which allows multiple modulation sources (such as LFOs and envelope generators to be routed to different modulation sources in a grid format.
A mod matrix is useful for synthesizers that have many modulation sources—they can be difficult to keep track of!
Modulator wave – A modulator wave provides the signal that modulates a carrier wave in AM or FM. The carrier wave takes on the “shape” of the modulator.
Modular – a modular system is a synthesis architecture made up of of separate modules for each function. Modules are connected by hand using external patch cables to retain maximum routing flexibility.
Most modern modular systems are built using the Eurorack format.
Monophonic – A synthesizer that can only produce a single pitched tone at a time.
Multitimbral – Multitimbral synthesizers are capable of playing more than one sound or patch at the same time.

Noise Generator – Noise generators are a form of oscillator that create a random signal—noise!
Noise in the onset of a timbre can help synthesizers emulate the complex attacks of acoustic instruments.
Oscillator Sync– Oscillator sync allows one oscillator to reset the period of another’s waveform. The result is that both oscillators will have the same pitch even though the slave oscillator’s frequency value is different.
The two oscillators will have the same basic pitch, but the differences in frequency will create additional harmonic partials when the two are summed together with a mixer.
Operator – An operator is a single sound generation module within an FM synthesizer. An operator can act as carrier or modulator wave in various configurations called algorithms.
Paraphonic – A paraphonic synth can produce more than one pitch at the same time but only contains a single VCA and VCF. That means that even though they
Polyphonic – Polyphonic synthesizers are instruments that can play more than one note at the same time. Analog synthesizers typically have fewer voices of polyphony than other methods of synthesis.
Portamento – Portamento is when the pitch changes gradually from note to note. Sometimes called glissando, it creates the effect of “gliding” between notes.
Pulse Width – Pulse width controls the length duty cycle of a square wave. The duty cycle refers to the duration that the wave is in it’s “max” position.
Pulse width modulation is a common synth feature that varies the length of the square wave VCO‘s duty cycle according to an LFO or Envelope Generator.
Pulse width mod can create a smooth modulation sound similar to a chorus effect.
Q Factor – Q factor, or “quality” factor is a parameter that describes how wide or narrow a filter’s centre of action is. You can think of Q like the bandwidth of a filter.

Even basic synth plugins have enough parameters to get completely lost.
But almost all synthesizers are made up of similar component functions.
If you know the name and purpose of each element of a synthesizer you’ll have a much clearer idea of how to make the sounds you’re searching for.
This article is a complete glossary of synthesizer terms. From analog to wavetable, here’s every synth definition you’ll ever need.
Synth Glossary
2-Pole/4-pole – The slope of a synthesizers low pass filter. 2-pole is the gentler 12 dB/octave slope and 4-pole is the more common 24 dB/octave type.
Additive Synthesis – Additive synthesis is a method of generating sound that works by combining multiple sine waves together.
Large numbers of sine waves of different frequencies are required to approximate complex timbres.
Aftertouch – Aftertouch is an additional dimension for adding expression to MIDI information.
Aftertouch is entered by applying pressure to held notes after the notes have already been struck.
Aftertouch is commonly used to create vibrato or other musical gestures that add to the expressiveness of a performance.
Algorithm – An algorithm is an configuration of operators in an FM synthesizer.
Different algorithms rearrange the order of carrier and modulator waves inside the synthesis engine to produce different sonic textures.
Amplitude – Amplitude is the intensity, or volume of a waveform.
If you’re looking at a waveform in a DAW or on an oscilloscope, amplitude will be represented on the y-axis and frequency will be represented on the x-axis.
Envelope generators shape your sound’s amplitude characteristics over type to create expressive tones.

Analog – Analog synthesizers create sound using traditional electronics like transistors, op-amps and ICs.
A synthesizer can be considered analog if its audio signal path contains no digital elements.
Analog synths can still contain digital preset management systems, or DCOs.
AM – AM stands for amplitude modulation. Amplitude modulation occurs when the amplifier section of a synthesizer is modulated by an LFO.
Amplitude modulation is often used for tremolo effects.
Arpeggiator – An arpeggiator is a device or plugin that takes a series of notes at its input and cycles through them in a predetermined pattern at the rate defined by a MIDI or CV clock signal.
Band Pass Filter/BPF – A band pass filter is a type of filter that cuts all frequencies except those in a narrow band of frequencies.
Carrier wave – A carrier wave provides the signal for a modulator to act on in an FM synthesizer. Modulators and carriers can be arranged in various configurations known as algorithms.
Clock – Clock is the signal that controls the timing of the functions in a synthesizer. Clock can be supplied by MIDI or control voltage.
Control Voltage – Control Voltage is the electrical signal that analog synthesizers use to communicate between modules such as VCOs, VCFs and VCAs
Cutoff Frequency – Cutoff frequency is the pitch at which a filter begins attenuating frequency content.
For a low-pass filter, the cutoff frequency defines where the high frequencies will begin decreasing in intensity.
DCO – DCO stands for digitally controlled oscillator. Early analog VCOs were expensive and could not always maintain stable pitch.
To produce affordable polyphonic synths that stayed in tune, engineers developed analog oscillators whose pitch could be controlled by a digital source.
These oscillators are still 100% analog—using DCOs does not make a synth a hybrid.
Digital – Digital synthesis takes place entirely within a digital processor. The main methods of digital sound generation are FM synthesis and wavetable synthesis.
Envelope generator – An envelope generator controls how a signal evolves over time. Envelope typically contain controls for attack, decay, sustain and release.
When connected to a VCA, an envelope generator creates the variation in amplitude that gives a sound its identity.
But envelope generators aren’t just for synth loudness. They can be a modulation source for almost any destination you can think of.
Eurorack – Eurorack is a popular format for synth modules in a modular system.
The standard specifications for power and connectivity allow you to build a custom system made up modules from many different manufacturers.
Frequency – Frequency is the number of cycles of a waveform per unit time. Frequency is measured in hertz (cycles per second) for audio signals.
For signals in the audio range, frequency is perceived as pitch.
For signals in the audio range, frequency is perceived as pitch.
FM – FM stands for Frequency Modulation. It’s a method of sound synthesis that creates complex timbres by modulating the frequency of one tone (the carrier) with another one (the modulator).
FM synthesis is responsible for the iconic sound of the Yamaha DX7—the synth that defined the sound of 80s pop.
Gate – Gate is simple on/off messages communicated with control voltage. Gate signals are most commonly used to control note on/off messages from the keyboards of analog synthesizers.
High Pass Filter/HPF – A high pass filter is a type of filter that allows only frequencies above the cutoff frequency to pass. A high pass filter can be thought of as a low cut.
Keytracking – Keytracking changes a patch’s parameters depending on the pitch of the notes being played.
It’s most commonly used to balance the sound of the synth across its entire range.
Keytracking can have positive or negative values that determine whether a parameter increases depending on key position.
The most common application for keytracking is a synthesizer’s filter or VCF.
Lead – A lead is a type of synth patch for creating main melodies. Leads are typically monophonic.
They often have a harmonically rich quality that allows them to stand out in a mix.
LFO – LFO stands for Low Frequency Oscillator. It creates a signal the same way the VCO does except much lower in frequency.
An LFO’s frequency range is so low that it doesn’t sound like a distinct tone like a regular oscillator. Instead the LFO is used as a modulator to change the characteristics of a sound.
Modulating a parameter such as the VCO frequency or VCF cutoff creates movement and action within a synthesizer sound.
Low Pass Filter/LPF – LPF stands for Low Pass Filter. A low pass filter is named for the frequencies it allows through rather than the ones it cuts. That means a low pass is actually a high cut.
Low pass filters take the trebly edge off of aggressive tones like square waves. They’re one of the main tools for shaping frequency content in subtractive synthesis.
MIDI– MIDI stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface. It’s the digital protocol that allows music gear made by different manufacturers to communicate.
Unlike CV, MIDI can transmit a huge amount of information about a musical performance. Today MIDI is used in almost all synthesizers and digital music gear—it’s an essential piece of music tech!
Mixer – A synthesizer mixer is used to combine the signals from different oscillators or sections of the synth.
Mod Matrix – A mod matrix, or modulation matrix is a synth architecture feature which allows multiple modulation sources (such as LFOs and envelope generators to be routed to different modulation sources in a grid format.
A mod matrix is useful for synthesizers that have many modulation sources—they can be difficult to keep track of!
Modulator wave – A modulator wave provides the signal that modulates a carrier wave in AM or FM. The carrier wave takes on the “shape” of the modulator.
Modular – a modular system is a synthesis architecture made up of of separate modules for each function. Modules are connected by hand using external patch cables to retain maximum routing flexibility.
Most modern modular systems are built using the Eurorack format.
Monophonic – A synthesizer that can only produce a single pitched tone at a time.
Multitimbral – Multitimbral synthesizers are capable of playing more than one sound or patch at the same time.

Noise Generator – Noise generators are a form of oscillator that create a random signal—noise!
Noise in the onset of a timbre can help synthesizers emulate the complex attacks of acoustic instruments.
Oscillator Sync– Oscillator sync allows one oscillator to reset the period of another’s waveform. The result is that both oscillators will have the same pitch even though the slave oscillator’s frequency value is different.
The two oscillators will have the same basic pitch, but the differences in frequency will create additional harmonic partials when the two are summed together with a mixer.
Operator – An operator is a single sound generation module within an FM synthesizer. An operator can act as carrier or modulator wave in various configurations called algorithms.
Paraphonic – A paraphonic synth can produce more than one pitch at the same time but only contains a single VCA and VCF. That means that even though they
Polyphonic – Polyphonic synthesizers are instruments that can play more than one note at the same time. Analog synthesizers typically have fewer voices of polyphony than other methods of synthesis.
Portamento – Portamento is when the pitch changes gradually from note to note. Sometimes called glissando, it creates the effect of “gliding” between notes.
Pulse Width – Pulse width controls the length duty cycle of a square wave. The duty cycle refers to the duration that the wave is in it’s “max” position.
Pulse width modulation is a common synth feature that varies the length of the square wave VCO‘s duty cycle according to an LFO or Envelope Generator.
Pulse width mod can create a smooth modulation sound similar to a chorus effect.
Q Factor – Q factor, or “quality” factor is a parameter that describes how wide or narrow a filter’s centre of action is. You can think of Q like the bandwidth of a filter.
