Wednesday_27_December_AD:2023_Q1134GMT
I ( Neil Leslie Gilbert of © N L G W J Household & © N.L.G.W.J. Enterperises Limited ) recall deciding to attend Notting Hill Carnival in 1990's. Because of what happened, I decided to never return.
I often think, imagine and miss playing #steelpan . I eventually decided to seek purchase of #calypsomusic and #steelpanmusic . I wasn't able to find anything in the music shops open in AD:1990's. I was heartbroken.
I think a suggestion from record shop cashier in Oval advised me to attend Nottinghill carnival.
Realising me slow resolve, I smiled and bought something else, I think it was solo project album from Backstreet Boys Brian Littrell (amongst other).
I decided to travel by now Transport for London (as motorcar parking may be unavailable due to full capacity.
Upon approach to Notting Hill Gate, I felt well, suddenly without 'hearing voices' symptoms of #schizophrenia , I was able to inhale natural environment, and others and my hygiene.
As me smiling prompted others to smile in return at me. Then, for the first time in many months, I felt like I wanted to socialise.
Then, nearby exit stop, I inhaled aroma of Caribbean cuisine. I decided to buy me lunch and dinner (if I found and enjoyed environment)
As I exited the train, the aroma increased, the sound of calypso and party people and steel pan music lifted my mood. I was delighted and filled with wonderment.
As I felt the air of exterior exit upon me face and felt the aroma, singing, music and erections lift me spirit, I was verbally and physically assaulted by IC3 African male.... I said (at volume: RECORD, waited a few seconds, then responded, if there wasn't a law in London, United Kingdom I would kill you. I remembered my #taekwondo lessons and repeatedly shouted help' the citizen approached me and I defended myself. Metropolitan Police Service arrived. I explained why his nose was bloody and why he was half conscious. I provided me name to police, then left before I started.
My day was ruined. (TUT) 😭

What to do During the Toronto Caribana?
Tumblr media
The Toronto Caribana Carnival brings unanimous joy to the streets of Toronto. With five decades of running, the carnival started in 1967 during Canada's Centennial celebrations and was a gift to the West Indian community in Toronto. It started as a three-day carnival, but fast forward almost six decades, and the event is a bustling, month-long street celebration.
While Torontonians enjoy the masquerade performances, steelpan music, live concerts, Caribbean cuisines, and Caribbean-themed parties, it may be confusing for newcomers or visitors in Toronto to get started.
The carnival's main event is surely the Grand Parade, which starts from Exhibition Place and marches up to Lakeshore Blvd. Steelpan music, colorful costumes, and masquerade dancers take center stage during this parade. The Grand Parade is held on the first week of August every year.
Other events you can't afford to miss are the King & Queen Showcase, Junior Parade, Carnival Ball, and J'ouvert.
The King & Queen Showcase is a costume pageantry of all the street performers who take part in the Grand Parade. Two of the most creative costumes that align with the year's theme are adjudged King and Queen, respectively.
The Junior Parade is just like the Grand Parade, but with junior performers who aspire to be the future flag bearers of this great Caribbean tradition. Another parade, J'ouvert, is a mini version of the Grand Parade, where spontaneous music and dance take place.
The Hottest Toronto Caribana Party
Once the grand Parade ends, head to Barcode Saturdays for an epic trust with the Caribbean style of celebration. We host our annual Caribana parties with Caribbean-inspired drinks, food, costumes, live music, and much more.
Our luxury nightclub attracts celebrities by the score, who come together to revel in the Caribana fever. Taste Caribbean flavors, enjoy exotic drinks, dance to steelpan, reggae, and hip-hop music, and party with celebrities at Barcode Saturdays.
Call (647) 408-1186 to sign up on the guestlist or to reserve bottle services for the grandest Caribana party in Toronto.

Black History Month: Pan-Africanism and the Connecting of the Steel Drum/Steelpan to Black History
Black History Month: Pan-Africanism and the Connecting of the Steel Drum/Steelpan to Black History
Most people with a basic knowledge of the history of the steel drum/steelpan/pan, have no difficulty in connecting the percussive instrument to its Trinidad origins. However, few are able to make the connection between the instrument and “Black History”. Arguably, not many are aware of steelpan’s Western African (Yoruba) roots. In celebration and honor of Black History Month 2021, Panicle USA…

Throwing back to the best Tuesday of the year on the road for Carnival with #Minshall I was already 5 months pregnant and devastated to be missing the mas as I'm accustomed to playing it... But @wyattgallery was determined to find us a way to enjoy Carnival no matter what! So we ran out when we heard the sound of the steelpan above the Savannah, and arm in arm we chipped down the road... that saved my soul that day! Then these two princesses showed up with their braids and mega style to take a pic with me 💖 I love this moment and will cherish that day as a reminder that there's always a way to find joy, once we are open to receiving it 🙏🏼 📷: @wyattgallery

Hello, solarpunk world. I’m Photosynth, a musician deciding to craft music from the ground up that expresses what Solarpunk is about. I want to make the soundtrack to Solarpunk. I want to start this off with a long mission statement that sets rules and boundaries and goals and visions of what Photosynth will be as a music project. Read it if you care, if you don’t, just know it’s there. :)
In my Solarpunk music-to-be, expect upbeat tempos, percolating percussion, shimmering melodies, dance-worthy rhythms, vivid compositions, contemplative passages, supplemental nature sound effects, high-tech sound design and layering, and an overall bright, organic-yet-technical, multi-ethnic sound.
That said, the difficulty with Solarpunk music is that it ideally would encapsulate something from every culture, every continent, and imagine it combined as one in a futuristic-yet organic and down to earth music sound. This is a huge and daunting task for most composers who haven’t been “cherry-picking” their favorite parts of many different cultures and their music for almost a decade. Luckily for me, I’m doing this to HAVE FUN, because it IS FUN, not to take it seriously and worry about who I don’t represent or if it sounds too corporate and not anarchist or socialist enough, etc! I know I have an all-loving heart and my reason for Solarpunk is for *optimism, inclusion, love, growth, sustain, and the combination of technology with nature.* Politics find their way into everything, and are a necessary evil in my opinion, but this music is the soundtrack to an *ideal*, not a *campaign*, so I will not be pumping this music full of any Solarpunk politics. .
There are also some things, musically speaking, that I protest against as a long-time composer/musician in the music that I make:
1. Using vocals/singing/lyrics just to use them, and letting them ruin a perfectly good instrumental that would leave more to the imagination. Especially for Solarpunk music, I seriously have a hard time imagining many vocals fitting into any of the songs, and especially not any words, but who knows? Solarpunk needs a lyrical voice at some point, after all!
2. Music which is extremely devoid of a beat and rhythm. I’m sorry, but the Solarpunk playlists I’ve found made thus far, while extremely inspiring and often-times pretty spot-on, don’t feel like they could be “real” to me because they often don’t have rhythm. If you’re looking for ambient / new-age / nature sounds / meditation music / sad piano music / singer songwriter with a guitar or other types of music that don’t have much rhythmic life to them, you’ll already find thousands of songs like that and you don’t need mine! I’ll be making music which, most of the time, has rhythms and beats of all kinds.
3. Sticking to one genre as a crutch and pigeon-holing the sound and style of what this project could be. I have always been a fan of artists that span a wide spectrum with their music, and try to do the same with my music. Solarpunk mixes *A LOT* of things together, so why would the music not do the same? An African Mbira sounds *great* with a Trini Steelpan, and a Japanese Koto, and an Indian Tabla, and maybe even a European Dulcimer and Chinese Gamelan! Who knows! But unless you explore all of these intruments and styles and sounds, enacting musical chemistry to see what works together and what doesn’t, there’d be no point in even making Solarpunk music. When the world is eco-sustainable and inclusive and loving of one another, this is what music will be: a hybridization of the best and brightest of all cultures and continents. I *WILL NOT* settle for “theming” a certain type of established sound to be “Solarpunk”. That’d be great, but this project’s intention is “Bespoke”... custom-made. Hand-crafted. That type of thing.
How it will be made:
With all that out of the way, I’ll say that the music will be made using FL Studio as its primary DAW. This is because much of what this music will be comes from complex arrangements of virtual instruments from all over the world, and so putting the music together like electronic music typically would is the best way to arrange it. Also, there will of course be some electronic music influence in the sound, seeing as it’s about a high-tech future that assimilates its technology with the natural world and all of its cultural potency—so what better DAW to compose organically AND synthetically in without getting too long-winded in any element of production? FL Studio allows me to load in instrument libraries like Kontakt (where I have libraries of hundreds of virtual ethnic instruments), as well as synthesizers, samplers, effects, sound clips, and of course organically record line-in any guitar, bass guitar, or microphone-recorded parts that might find themselves in the mix.
Using FL Studio also allows MIDI work to remain prominent. Any seasoned musician knows MIDI is extremely beneficial where any re-making, re-mixing, or “versioning” is involved in music. With Photosynth, I plan to make multiple versions of songs that fit different Solarpunk sub-themes (think of a theme park, or the Rainforest Cafe, or the video game Sonic CD and how its soundtrack has different versions of each song based on the past and future timelines of a place) so having MIDI to play with very easily is also a benefit of composing, arranging and mixing all right within FL Studio 12 (soon to be V 20)
Disclaimer though:
Any new music project, especially one with lofty goals like this, takes some time (meaning: a few songs or releases) to find its groove, in terms of the sound, the music, the art and graphic design visuals, the music video style and production methods, the marketing tactics, the social networking, the collaboration, etc. I’m painting a very vivid manifesto here, but in reality I’m one person with one computer (4 screens, though!) and one brain and only one set of world experience. The first few releases of this project are going to fall short of this manifesto, undoubtedly, but I hope you’ll enjoy the ride as I work to find the groove that I want it to have within some months of time. I know I’ll enjoy it greatly. Making music is FUN, but making Solarpunk music? That sounds like Utopia!
p.s. All of the Photosynth social media will be pretty slim for now, since I just finished a lot of work on a different music project and I’m authoring a Solarpunk book (see The Carbon Coast) so be patient with updates on Photosynth!

Why not switch to easy listening music? Hear this familiar classical track. (If you're able to read music, you will especially enjoy this)
My recent schizophrenia hallucination episode*#_ whilst I listened to #steelpan music via my Spotify account, I hallucinated about listening to steel-pan music as if I were viewing music text.
When I formally played steel-pan_bass (as a class-band-student during my attendance of primary schooling ( Greater London) Our music teacher instructed our band to copy patterns-of-play by hitting notes painted on a steel-pans segmented surface (which forms orchestral music pieces, performed by remembering and practicing play-patterns). Currently: proud to hear the heavenly sounds of steel-pan or calypso music by hallucinating about the sound of each pan, as being musical-text.
I formally learned to read music-text when I attended high school in Suffolk, England, which is where I received cello & violin lessons.
Before researching and finding steel-pan music via social media, I hummed and la-di-da-harmonised during hallucinations and imaging my performances of my favourite tracks performed at primary school (thirty-seven years ago).
Perhaps I should search for suitable instruments.
I was delighted to hear the same named track of steel-pan music which I imagined and hallucinated months before finding steel-pan music on Spotify.🎹🎷🎺🎸🎸🎻🪘🪘🥁🪈🪗🎧🎚️🎛️🤭
Have you performed with usage of an instrument? (Please comment)
Have you learned how to read music-text? (Please comment)
Have you imagined or hallucinated about hearing your choice of favourite music as music-text?
(Please comment)
If yes, did the sound have many music-text notes? (If any) (please comment)
Does your favourite music or choice of music give you stability? (Please comment)

COVID-19 causes Trinidad and Tobago to cancel its Carnival for 2021
New Post has been published on http://khalilhumam.com/covid-19-causes-trinidad-and-tobago-to-cancel-its-carnival-for-2021/
COVID-19 causes Trinidad and Tobago to cancel its Carnival for 2021
There is still hope for a virtual festival
“Carnival Tuesday meggie”: Carnival lover Attillah Springer gives a “meggie” – a hand gesture that brings the thumb and four fingers together in a sign of derision, scorn or rejection. Photo by Georgia Popplewell, CC BY-NC-ND 2.0.
It may have been anticipated, but now it's official: thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, Trinidad and Tobago's 2021 Carnival celebrations have been cancelled. Prime Minister Keith Rowley made the announcement on the afternoon of September 28, calling the national festival “the perfect environment for the spreading of the virus.” Despite the inevitable economic blow the decision will have, he said, he's not prepared to take the risk. Reaction, predictably, was split. While most people applauded the decision, calling it both “expected” and “solid”, others wondered about the fate of those whose income depends on the national festival. When one Facebook user called the decision “insane”, Josie Aché-De Goulard retorted:
NO! it's realistic and logical is what it is. Everyone else has already gone ahead and cancelled theirs. I do not possibly see how any “right thinking” citizen of T&T could possibly think to put the country under further threat from Covid-19.
Trinidad and Tobago Carnival 2020 was already over by the time the country recorded its first case of COVID-19 in March. Other countries that host annual Carnivals, including Brazil, have already postponed their 2021 events, but it is only the third time in history that Trinidad and Tobago has put theirs on hold—a history that Trinidadian author Michael Anthony chronicled in his book “Parade of the Carnivals of Trinidad, 1839-1989″. In the chapter etitled “Carnival in a World of War,” Anthony noted that the festival continued as usual during World War I, which was fought largely in Europe. After the war ended, the 1919 celebrations were known as “Victory Carnival”. During World War II, the festival did not take place at all between 1942 and 1945, although “spontaneous” celebrations happened on May 8 and 9, 1945 in honour of Victory in Europe (VE) Day, and on Aug 15 and 16, 1945 for Victory over Japan (VJ) Day. The country's street festival was postponed from February 1972 to May 1973 because of the threat of the polio virus, so it is not as if the move to put off next year's Carnival celebrations is unprecedented. In fact, many netizens saw it coming, but hoped that a virtual celebration might take its place. In a Facebook status update on June 24, Maria Rivas-Mc predicted that “promoters are going to have to Zoom in fete-goers to the music and the vibe from concert halls in ‘foreign’ [abroad]!” Virtual Carnivals are something that costume designers like Clary Salandy have already been experimenting with—the band she and her husband created for Notting Hill Carnival 2020 was showcased online. Trinidad and Tobago's Carnival stakeholders have also expressed excitement about the opportunity to share their creativity in the virtual realm. Facebook user Marc Bejai suggested:
We keep forgetting that there are elements of carnival that are outside the realm of the street parade. We should adapt and showcase our calypso, pan, extempo and dimanche gras much like how sporting events are still being carried out.
Both calypso music and the steelpan instrument originated in Trinidad and Tobago. Extempo refers to an extemporaneous form of calypso, and Dimanche Gras, literally translated as “Big Sunday,” is a grand show at which coveted titles like the Calypso Monarch are decided. Franka Philip of Trini Good Media, which produces the “Talk ‘Bout Us” podcast, crowdsourced opinions on what a virtual Carnival might look like. Most commenters felt that simply delaying the celebrations would be best, with Zahra Gordon suggesting that it may be an opportune time “to re-focus to community Carnivals and limit the size of large bands.” Anthony Bisnath added:
Aside from the issue of a vaccine being made available globally, it’s difficult to envision any Carnival 2021 at all, due to the commercialization of the festival, and the limitations of two major sources of revenue: Government expenditure will be prioritized elsewhere, and corporate entities will slash sponsorship budgets. Having a 2021 Carnival may jeopardize the planning cycle for one in 2022. It will be almost impossible to execute, as Carnival mas [costume] production is essentially a 12 month cycle. So there are challenges to logistics, Sponsorship, Supply Chain, Manufacturing, Costuming, International Travel, Consumer Patterns, Disposable Income and Statutory Approvals all changing for the next 18 months.
Carnival enthusiast Tillah Willah was not perturbed, however. She posted on Facebook:
You don’t always need a crowd to observe your ritual, to praise your ancestors, to offer thanks to the universe for your life.
One Twitter user, however, wasn't quite so optimistic:
I woulda rather get horn than be told it having no carnival — Travis World (@itstravisworld) September 28, 2020
“Horn” is Caribbean slang for infidelity. Other netizens wondered whether, given the cancellation of the physical street parade, they would have to go to work on Carnival Monday and Tuesday. Apart from essential services, most workplaces are closed on those two days, even though they are not official public holidays. It didn't take long for the memes to surface. This one poked fun at what the 2021 designs in a sought-after band—known for its skimpy costumes—might look like:
Meme about Trinidad and Tobago Carnival 2021, widely shared on social media.
It is a question that both the producers and loyal participants of Trinidad and Tobago Carnival are still trying to figure out, but stakeholder Rubadiri Victor certainly hoped that a virtual Carnival 2021 is in the offing:
Trinidad and Tobago should see virtual Carnival 2021 as the launch of T&T's virtual economy! […] We are creating a telegenic event with brilliant filmmakers and Carnival, Creative, and Business stakeholders for international consumption with brand T&T as the winner!
