Stencil Revolution

There once was a website called stencil revolution. I discovered it around the time I was 10-13 at the height of the Banksy craze. It inspired me to create some of my first visual art. The forum hosted a vibrant community of artists that would hold contest and help each other improve their craft. I posted there frequently for awhile but the site slowly died. As I grew as an artist into my teens and early twenties, I would visit the site from time to time. It was pretty dead towards the end, but I would still get occasional feedback.

It seems like the domain was bought by some dumb stencil company. All that is left is archives in the wayback machine.

Tragic.

Spot Light On: Blek le Rat

Maybe you’ve heard of the global sensation that is Banksy, the satirical artist thats been in the news for over a decade. Or perhaps you’ve seen the pixelated 8-bit characters of Space Invader. Both of these artists have achieved international fame in their own right. Both of these artists have something else in common, they were heavily influenced by a graffiti pioneer known as Blek le Rat.

Blek is a French graffiti artist known as one of the godfathers of urban art. Making his debut in the 1980s, his use of stenciling graphic images pushed the style to the frontier.

History

Born Xavier Prou in 1952, this Parisian studied fine art and architecture at L’Ecole Nationale Superieure Beaux Arts. During his study he became entranced with the street art in New York. Due to this influence after his return to France for his studies he became entangled with teen street artists in France, eventually delving into the street scene himself.

He soon adopted the name Blek le Rat, derived from the Italian comic Blek le Roc. As he painted himself across France his iconic mark became that of a stenciled rat. He believed a rat was an animal of the streets that both created fear and symbolized invasion, an infestation of sorts. However, the rat characters he created were a symbol of freedom in the bustling city.

The Work

Blek’s trademark style was stenciling, which he derived from the old technique poquoirs he learned through his study at Beaux Art. Though the style in itself is painstaking, with the careful cutting of the image, Blek was precise with his work. While most stencil artists cut-out Xeroxed copies of images to make their work, he instead made each image by hand. He constantly used black and white in his art as a reflection of the street, purposefully and intricately removing all gray. Furthermore, each location was carefully chosen so he can properly express the mood of the city.

Though he is most commonly remembered for his rat characters his work is much more inclusive. In fact, thanks to the artist Mr. Shadow he started making larger characters and is now regarded as the inventor of full-sized human stencils. In recent years he has painted homeless people in attempt to draw awareness to the issue. He also painted a piece of a kidnapped journalist, Florence Aubenas, which further pushed politicians and journalist to get her released.

Controversy

Blek le Rat is known in the graffiti world but has been overshadowed by Banksy in the mainstream. Despite the evident similarities between the two artists, due to his placement in national landmarks and overall more controversial approach Banksy is more famous.

There has been an claims of plagiarism by Banksy in the community due to the similarities. This derives from not only the similar style of art but the similar subjects. While Banksy has reportedly claimed that it is a coincidence stating “Every time I think I’ve painted something slightly original, I find out that Blek le Rat has done it as well, only 20 years earlier.”

Conclusion

Whether plagiarized or not Blek le Rat has definitely been one of the most influential artists in the graffiti world. His style revolutionized the art world both on the streets and off. Europe’s graffiti scene was largely developed thanks to his work. He’s even changed society by inciting awareness through his art. Blek le Rat is an artist that deserves the title godfather of urban art and he’s not done yet. So make sure to keep an eye on him, for his greatest work may be yet to come.
