That inner flap is called the “stepback,” and you can find some really fun examples on Instagram using the “StepbackSaturdays” tag.

Ever since starting to publish romance novels I’ve been checking out the romance books at the thrift store specifically for the clinch covers, as a reference for what I might want to do with my own books.

As a culture we mocked these to extinction but I think we were just afraid of their power. The modern clinch revival still hasn't reached the heady heights of what they were doing in the 80s! The vintage covers can be really quite explicit. These ones in particular were steamy enough they had to be hidden on an inner flap.

Happy #stepbacksaturday everyone! A few weeks back I featured a #stepback #romancenovel written by the same author of this book. Like that other #Romance, this step back has a keyhole design where you can see the heroine's face. Which is appropriate as the #book is named after her, or at least it's a song version of her name. Written with the author's characteristic rough & earthy yet also incredibly sensitive tone, this book tells a story of a woman who "fights her way to freedom through the hearts of many men." The heroine is biracial & it is a major plot point as this is set in the Antebellum United States. True love conquers all, even though the hero and heroine are forced to move out west start a new life together. At the end, the very rough-around-the-edges hero says to his heroine, "I just don't give a damn woman. White or black, I want you for what you are." I always remember to post on #stepbacksaturday, then I forget to do the #stepbackreveal! But there's still time today to get this one out!🙂 This Ken Otsuka #cover features a gorgeous #clinch and a kitty, which just make me love it more. Promise Me Magic by Patricia Camden has an unusual Germanic/Swiss setting. It was part of bantam's Once Upon a Time romance series, wish I had thought were based on fairy tales, but I'm not so sure. This romance is about two strong-willed people fighting over the same home. Unfortunately it's one of the many books that I have started but have yet to finish. Do any of you have that same issue? So many books seem interesting, that I start them, but then another one grabs my attention and end up with multiple books I read the same time.
