hey there Inscryption gang. you could never guess what's occupied my brain lately. so have some mostly canon/somewhat AU designs for the main guys:

Grimora:

Honestly one of the ones I'm the most proud of.

Second one I designed.

I wanted to push for the bug theming, because did ya know, some 'stinkbugs' are actually beetles? I figured that may as well explain her looking like a beetle but being called a stinkbug.

She wears more mortician-esque clothing, but also incorporates actual bones into the outfit. These being her teeth earrings, bone buttons, and 'bad party city bug skeleton' headpiece.

I'm not actually sure what I'd consider her, if she'd be ghost, ghoul, etc. She could do it all if she'd like, I think.

Also I included it in the art, but: her shawl is designed to look like a beetle elytra. for fun. and laughs.

Leshy:

I see a lot of people's designs emphasizing his deer vibes, and I love that, so I had to throw some deer stuff on. I also found Leshy to be pretty owl-like, so I decided to add in that for fun.

He's not really any specific theme besides 'creepy old beast man', which kind of ties into his overuse of amalgams during his boss fight.

I'm not sure if his beard/hair is feathers or leaves.

P03:

oh my beautiful bastard boy.

He was easily the worst to design. His ingame proportions are wack, but I got through it.

I wasn't sure if I wanted to use his act 2 screen or his act 3, but his act 3 screen balanced out the values of the design more, so I went with that.

He has a little card reader in his chest, so he can look at the actual code of cards and see if there's any hidden mechanics. A la ouroboros or long elk style.

His stoat form is missing a leg because would you look at that, so is he. It just occurred to me I think I swapped the sides but shhhhhhh.

Magnificus:

The design I'm the least confident on. He was also the first to be designed.

As funny as it is that Mag looks like a tree, it makes him too close design wise to Leshy imo. So I decided to get funky with it.

Technically, he's more of a living statue than anything, to match with the Mox Deck's primarily stone and gem themed cards.

His focus while he's painting accumulates magic around him, which after long enough has resulted in the magic condensing into his thick fur.

I added the hat bc I love the hat people give him, and I had the dangling piece be a crescent moon. Mostly because a full one looked weird and I wanted to reference Inscryption's moon motifs.

Kaycee:

Ok. So. this isn't game dev Kaycee and it isn't skeleton ghoul Kaycee. It's 'Death-card Kaycee'. Here's where my headcanons get wild.

So, the idea is that Leshy was the original one to get his claws on the Old_Data, right? Leshy much prefers an actual challenge. He found base Inscryption's kind battle loss mechanics (IE: 'Well better luck next time :P') disappointing, and wanted to make the player fight for it.

When he did this, he took the relatively blank code for the Challenger and gutted it. He kept some parts, such as the most basic code, but replaced the bits he didn't want with Old_Data, leading to sentience on the Challenger's part.

When Dev Kaycee opened up Leshy's Inscryption for the first time, the Challenger was the Player Character. This, while fun for Kaycee (who didn't realize the extent of the 'realness' of the characters), was horrible for the Challenger. The Challenger knew this wasn't what Inscryption was meant to be.

When that run was lost, Dev Kaycee made a death card. Of course, she named the card 'Kaycee'.

Due to being the Player Character, Card-Kaycee didn't have enough power to become a talking card, plus, Leshy frankly didn't care that much for the cards themselves.

So, in summary, Card-Kaycee is the original Inscryption challenger, the oldest of the death cards, and the most 'uncorrupted' by the Old_Data.

Player:

Anyway. On the opposite end of the spectrum is (the) Player. Whereas Kaycee was the first death card, Player never lost. They were the final run of Luke's, when he beat Leshy and cleared Act 1. As such, they never had a death card and were never named. So, they're simply known as Player. or 'Hey you'.

Every time a player lost, Leshy turned them into a death card. Unfortunately, his camera slowly siphoned pieces of the original Challenger data, so he had to keep patching it up with Old_Data. Because of this, while this is major spoilers for the AU, Player is basically just Old_Data, with a little bit of that original Challenger data left.

When they started their Leshy run, they were basically clueless. They understood they were playing a game, but they didn't realize they were in one. Player maintained status as the Player Character for the entirety of Inscryption, and had a horrible time as reality shifted around them time and time again. They would only realize they were in a video game when P03 grew frustrated with them during Act 3 and revealed it.

They're very naive, and despite their Old_Data origins, in love with the world around them. They're not exactly Naive on purpose, but it happens. It is very unfortunate then that basically everyone in Inscryption takes advantage of that.

Due to not realizing that Inscryption was a game for the majority of their existence, their emotions on the various acts are. Not great. During Act 1, they were confused, and scared, but dead set on finding a way out, and saving the talking cards in the process. (After all, they were the only ones that weren't threatening to kill them, or force them to stab out their eye.) During Act 2, they were even more confused, but honestly a bit relieved when they realized they did manage to save everyone. They chose to replace Leshy as scrybe of beasts. It quickly went downhill though, as P03 (surprisingly the card they grew closest to in Act 1) took over Inscryption. Act 3 was.... difficult for them, having the closest thing they had to a friend (P03) have them in the exact same situation that Leshy did. 'Becoming the very thing you swore to destroy' in their eyes and all. They still card about P03, but things were... not the same. Finally, when the finale happens, they're basically having a breakdown the entire time. Grimora (the kindest of the cards) is the one that kills Inscryption, and the only time they're properly acknowledged by the Scrybes as alive is when Grimora apologizes for dooming them as well. Leshy is a sick sort of comfort, reminding them of when things were simple, and not wanting them dead for once. Mag is the final one, and the reflection of them still bearing one of his eyes makes it even more difficult.

For Acts 1, 2, and part of 3, they were convinced they were in control. But after the reveal of their status as a player character, a puppet, they quickly realize how much they hate their situation. They're terrified, all the time, and especially during the finale, they're screaming for Luke to stop, but.. well. He has to know how the story ends. And besides. You don't ever hear player characters in most games anyway.

I won't go into their lore more because I'm planning on writing a fic with this, but I will say. There's a reason its called Ouroboros AU.
