Krum Kobold and Stratus

Krum Kobold and Stratus the Silver Phantom

:Name: 

Krum Kobold

:Personality:

Krum is not a people person. Most aren’t even sure she’s a person person. She may be some gremlin changeling abandoned on a hilltop. Her dreary monotone, dead expression, no concept of personal space (humans or dragons) and unblinking, froglike stare make others uncomfortable in her presence. She assumes that everyone is, to a greater or lesser extent, an animal driven by animal instinct. 

With the dragons new place in the world Krum wants to learn more about them. She’s analytical, recording her growing knowledge of anatomy and physiology in her notebook and a glance inside is not for the squeamish. She’s not considerate of hygiene and it's unknown if she has a sense of smell or a gag reflex. She certainly has no shame. 

Krum thoughtlessly obeys instruction because it’s easier than questioning a human's strange emotional logic. All instruction, any instruction. Until there’s something to write in her diary. She will wander into danger with her shears and measuring knots with no concern for personal injury. Black eyes, scratches and bandages are a mere inconvenience in the quest for knowledge so Stratus has his work cut out for him as he strives to fulfil his life debt.  

As a researcher, Krum is especially unhappy with the Book of Dragons which she finds out of date and unobjective. She takes special offense to the ‘Mystery Class’, which means they just aren’t trying hard enough! She’s also adamant that dragons, although related, are too biologically sophisticated to be ‘reptiles’ and to prove this she wants to get her hands on a dragon’s heart but they always seem just out of reach. 

:Background:

Had Hiccup explored further than Itchy Armpit he’d have seen Hoofwart, the largest and warmest island of the Archipelago with scattered farming communities. He might even have soared above the small flickering light of Holgar Kobold as he helped everything from a pregnant yak in trouble, to chickens with fowlpox or a woolly flock with the weeping glaggies.

Krum follows in his footsteps. While he visited townships for medicine it was her duty to see to the animals and aside from the occasional farmer, human exposure was limited. Due to their proximity to Eret’s Fort, dragons were rare. Krum feels she knows everything there is to know about sheep, dragons seems like a logical step. 

:Relationships:

Krum doesn’t have relationships, she has observation subjects. She greatly admires Stoik the Vast for his ability to lead his flock and thinks that Hiccup has a lot to live up to. She spends time exchanging notes with Fishlegs but believes he’s prone to personification and lacks objectivity. 

She refers to Frey as the bellwether, the head of their flock and sees Gunilla and Jian constantly test his control. Sisterly Bebe is there to bandage her endless wounds and she thinks of Snorri as the straggler, the one who will be eaten soonest which she hopes to witness and record. 

The others view her as either strange, a source of information or a mild nuisance that has to be nannied or she’ll walk straight into the dragon’s maw. 

:Weapon:

After watching Krum deftly fight a gang of dragon hunters with little more than old farming sickle, Gunilla was filled with inspiration. A week’s work brought forth Sickleglow, a ghostly pale sickle and chain lantern of deathsong amber filled with monstrous nightmare oil to light her way, presumably from the back of something’s throat. 

:Dragon:

Stratus the Silver Phantom

:Appearance:

Stratus’s sleek body is honed like a knife. Bright white scales with an amethyst, opaline lustre allows him to blend seamlessly with the clouds. As a male, his arrow shaped head possesses only a small nose horn however his glassy, crystalline horns sweep back and crackle with static. His lobed wings create an easy airfoil for gliding and create a whistling noise as he picks up speed. 

:Personality:

Despite his years in captivity, Stratus is haughty as a prince and binds himself due to a perceived life debt. Unfortunately Krum has the survival instinct of a dementia patient on an eight lane highway, constantly wandering after dragons in the name of research. When she doesn’t listen a short, sharp shock to temporarily paralyse her is the only warning she’ll heed. His contempt is not just for his rider but his fellow dragons who fail to realise his beauty and magnificence. 

:Strengths and Weaknesses:

Silver Phantoms with their glossy, mirror like scales have a natural camouflage and no matter the weather Stratus shrouds seamlessly with the sky. His rider, not so much. He can soar up where the atmosphere is thin and a Silver Phantom’s stoop can outfly a night fury. Otherwise they’re made for a natural glide, able to sleep on the wing and surf the updrafts with little energy expended. 

Living above the clouds means Stratus has learned to channel and direct lightning although not with the strength of their rival, the skrill. He uses it indiscriminately on Krum causing that twitching, frazzled look the Fang Gang have come to accept. More often he creates blossoms of rapid, bluewhite fire.

Honestly the older I grow the I find it more and more difficult to express how much httyd means to me, it holds such a special place in my heart and I always find my self breathless and wiping tears away after I watch any of the films. I’m not sure if it’s just me but I hope to one day create something so influential and meaningful to anyone who sees it

HTTYD AU Idea

Another idea that will probably be nothing more than an idea. It kind of started out because there are plenty of stories where a human finds a hurt dragon and nurses them back to health, gaining their trust and friendship in the process (Hiccup, Heather, etc.). But I wanted a story where a dragon finds a hurt human. So I give you a role swap AU from Toothless's POV. Toothless is on one of his annual raids on Berk and barely dodges a trap. After such a nasty scare, he fires back and growls in satisfaction as the launcher catches fire and collapses onto a struggling Viking. Toothless lands to finish the job, but he is conflicted to find that it's a young human instead of a scary Viking trapped under the rubble. Still, he thinks of all the dangerous Vikings that were once young humans but grew into murderous killing machines, and Toothless bares his teeth, ready to end this future Viking. But just as Hiccup saw himself in Toothless's eyes, had their roles been swapped, Toothless sees himself in Hiccup's. He drags the human out from under the debris and discovers with a pang of guilt that the young human's leg has been blasted clean off. Toothless debates whether or not sparing the human's life was good enough until an especially scary Viking came yelling, ax swinging. The vast Viking with hair like a roaring fire had obviously come to finish them both off. Toothless couldn't bring himself to leave the hurt human to the mercy of the angry Viking, so he carried the boy to his nook on the dragon island. But a dragon nest is no place for an injured human, Toothless soon realizes.  After a few close calls, Toothless decides he'd better hide his human somewhere safer. He takes his human to a cave in the forest, a ways away from Berk. But things aren't looking good for the little human. He's deathly pale, and when he doesn't wake up one morning, Toothless decides he needs a human healer. Toothless fly's to Berk that night and gently kidnaps the small wrinkly Viking healer, Gothi. Gothi arrives just in time and gives Hiccup the medical attention he desperately needs. After the initial shock of being carried off by a Night Fury and watching Toothless interact with Hiccup (bringing him various sized sticks as potential peg legs, all of which Hiccup gently refuses), she realizes that dragons are kind, compassionate creatures. Still, after a few days, once satisfied that Hiccup will be alright, she sets off to go back to Berk and inform Stoik that Hiccup is, in fact, alive. After all, Berk thinks a Night Fury ate Hiccup. It's only fair they knew the truth, and while Hiccup was doing well, it would be quite a while before he'd be able to make the journey home. Hiccup doesn't want to let Gothi go and risk endangering Toothless, but Gothi convinces him it's not fair to let Stoik mourn his son's death anymore. So Hiccup agrees to let her go under the conditions they write out precisely what Gothi's going to tell Stoik. They agree on a script, and Gothi leaves. Not long after Gothi leaves, Toothless bumps into another young skinny human, but this one is much feistier than Toothless's current roommate. This particular human even poses quite a threat, and Toothless is forced to go on the offensive. But before things could get too ugly, the small human yells, "For Hiccup (curse his scrawny butt)!" and Toothless adds two and two together. With some difficulty, he scoops up the girl and fly's her the distance to his cave, where Hiccup is sleeping peacefully. Astrid probably punches him and demands an explanation, and Hiccup provides one. Then Hiccup wonders what she's doing all the way out here, and Astrid says there was a massive honor awaiting whoever found the location of the Night Fury's lair (Hiccup is a bit disappointed). Astrid explains that without Gothi pointing her in the right direction, she would've never found them. Hiccup and Astrid get some bonding time while Gothi travels to Berk, and Hiccup tells her all about dragons, and Astrid starts to get feelings for him. Then one day, while Astrid's helping Hiccup, Toothless growls a warning and flies off to face whatever is coming. Sure enough, a few miles out, Toothless is ambushed by Stoik and practically all of Berk. They pin Toothless down, but just before Stoik can finish the beast, Gothi stops him and writes something like, "If you don't believe me that your son's alive and this dragon saved him, then believe me when I say there's an island with a nest full of dragons, and you'll never find it without this dragon." This convinces Stoik to let Toothless live and use him to find the dragon nest. Gothi runs back to the cave and tells Hiccup and Astrid what happened. They decide they have to do something, so with Astrid's help, they go back to Berk and train the other teens. They fly to the island, and stuff happens as it does in the movie, but Toothless loses his tail fin in the fight.
