Read Queer in 2024: A Storygraph Reading Challenge!
Looking to queer your bookshelf in 2024? Then join us as we host a low-key, fun reading challenge!
Tumblr media
The idea is simple: read even one queer book, and you can win this challenge! Once you’ve done that, you can explore our 39 bonus prompts, encouraging you to read queer books new and old, queer books from different genres, queer non-fiction books, and queer books about identities you are familiar with and those you’re unfamiliar with. We’ve been working on populating the list with suggestions (and would definitely love your help in fleshing them out, there’s so much great queer lit out there – I personally primarily read queer books from East Asia so those stories are rather over-represented in our suggestions right now!) and we’re really excited to see what books people read, what books people suggest, and how many queer books we, collectively, can read in 2024!
So as you plan your reading with an eye toward the new year, why not join us? We’d love to have you!
You can see all 40 of our prompts and join the challenge here!
And, looking for a supportive, friendly community to chat with about all your new reads? Come join our Book Lover’s Discord, too! Joining is absolutely not a requirement, but it is a great way to make some new bookish friends!

I created another reading challenge. This one has no time limit and challenges me and others to read more Argentinian literature in some shape or form. This includes anything including novels, non-fiction, audiobooks, poetry, graphic novels, short stories etc. It should only be set in Argentina, be about Argentina or by an Argentinian author.
If you're learning Spanish this could also be a great reading practice. Otherwise, feel free to read the books in translation.

The books I read for the StoryGraph's Genre Challenge 2024
For a nonfiction book about food and/or drink...I read Tasting History by Max Miller. A straightforward choice, recipes and history by a YouTuber I have enjoyed.
For a historical novel set before 1900...I read The Game of Kings by Dorothy Dunnett. Set beginning in 1547!
For a biography or memoir about/by a musician...I read Behind the Seams by Dolly Parton with Holly George-Warren and Rebecca Seaver. A memoir all about clothes people have made for Dolly over her career, also featuring hair and wig styling and make-up artists.
For manga...I read Witch Hat Atelier Vol. 1 by Shirahama Kamome (translated by Stephen Kohler). Another easy fit!
For a thriller or crime novel in translation...I read Malice by Higashino Keigo (translated by Alexander O. Smith). From Japanese, one of the Detective Kaga novels.
For a nonfiction book about psychology...I read On Looking: Eleven Walks with Expert Eyes by Alexandra Horowitz. An inexact fit; this book is also about nature, design and social habits.
For a science fiction or dystopian book by a woman or nonbinary author...I read A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers. A robot and a monk in the far future, on an alien moon.
For a middle grade book with queer representation...I read Battle Magic by Tamora Pierce. I have a feeling I wouldn't have counted this as middle grade if I hadn't just read those of the Emelan books that aim closer to that age group. The other Circle Reforged books reinforce that trio being YA, but that wasn't part of my initial takeaway from BM, so I'll stick to it!
For a short story collection by a Black author...I read Filthy Animals by Brandon Taylor. The stories in this collection interlink, and I saw more than one take that they shouldn't therefore count as short stories, which I was happy to find is, in this case, silly. Chapters are a different creature.
For a debut literary or contemporary fiction novel...I read Dial A for Aunties by Jesse Q. Sutanto. Sutanto's first book, this is a genre-straddler, but it's most neatly in contemporary.
I liked or loved all of these! The Dunnett, Shirahama, and Chambers books have sequels I have been devouring as well, and Malice impressed me so much I look forward to trying more Higashino.
On Looking is the book I'm least likely to recommend, with a caveat--I think some of the writing, as it transcribes conversations, only worked for me because I listened to the audiobook. It did work!
The memoir prompt pushed me the most out of my usual reading habits. I was also delighted to have a push back into reading manga, which I hadn't dipped into for several years. And the prompt I had the most fun looking for an eligible book was the crime novel in translation! This was a pleasant, easy challenge, but still specific enough to be inspiring.

My 2023 reading challenge: 26/30 📚
This year, I started listening to audiobooks, and life got in the way a little and I didn’t read as much as I would have liked towards the end of the year. But that’s ok!
My top 5 books of 2023 were:
The Princess Bride, William Goldman ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The Housekeeper and the Professor, Yoko Ogawa ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Frankenstein, Mary Shelley ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Cursed Bunny, Bora Chung ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨
The Phantom of the Opera, Gaston Leroux ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨
Honourable mention: Greek Lessons, and The Vegetarian, both by Han Kang (my favourite contemporary Korean author)

Day 7
Niki turned off his alarm and looked at his phone, only to discover that Cinnamon and ES would be closed for the day due to the snow storm. He rubbed his eyes and glanced out the window of the bedroom and sure enough, snow was coming down in full force. Nobody would want to be out in that weather. At least he could get a few extra hours of--
His stomach started growling. Nevermind, he had to get up and make breakfast. Rinne tried to hold Niki hostage but eventually relented and fell back asleep. Rinne’s face was soft in the morning light, easily one of Niki’s favorite sights in the morning. Even if Rinne would inevitably come to ruin his day at work or gamble their money away at the pachinko parlor, he would always come back to him.
Niki indulged himself a bit and kissed Rinne’s forehead before going to make breakfast. He could do something more complicated today since he didn’t have work, and he’d probably make some of Rinne’s omurice for him. That was another thing that was cute about the older man snoring in the other room; he and his brother loved omurice and if given the chance would eat nothing but that.
Thirty minutes later and Niki was about ready to finally sit down and eat (not that he hadn’t been sneaking bites since he started) when Rinne finally dragged himself out of their bedroom. Niki greeted him and pointed to the omurice on the counter, which Rinne grabbed and sat opposite him before digging into it. His feet found Niki’s under the table and Rinne locked their ankles together.
“No work today Rinne-kun?”
“Nah, seems like ES closed everything down cuz of the storm. I’ll just have to terrorize you all day~”
Niki rolled his eyes. “Can’t wait.”
They continued to talk as they ate, the dishes starting to pile up as Rinne took what he could hold to the sink and began washing them. He was humming one of their new songs as he soaped up the sponge and started scrubbing. Niki brought the rest of the dishes to the counter and started rinsing the dishes as Rinne washed them.
The rest of the day was spent in a comfortable domesticity that Niki wished they could have forever. Without anyone else around, Rinne didn’t put up his persona and was much tolerable to be around, and it was the side of him that Niki loved the most. He loved their lazy afternoons spent on the couch in each other’s arms watching bad reality tv reruns, their silly conversations and shared kisses (not on the lips, that was something Rinne still insisted on, but everywhere else was fair game).
If only they got snowed in more often.

april; peer the future
Happy April! Hope the sun is shining, and the flowers are blooming where you are :) This month's prompt for the Suck Your TBR Dry Reading Challenge is peer into the future!
Crystal ball, illuminated lights on a ship's dashboard, the unknown, a world we fail to recognize, sentience in machinery, intelligence beyond the human mind. What are the possibilities of the future? Ideas: science fiction, space opera, speculative fiction, ARC/Beta Read, upcoming movie adaptation
Finally am picking back up my reading groove as the sun melts away the winter gloom (metaphorically, it doesn't snow where I live). I am hoping to read a sci-fi book, but I'll have to see what counts, since a lot of my physical TBR is in storage. If no sci-fi, I'll be finishing up a few arcs. Keep an eye out for reviews!
Reminder; you can follow the challenge via storygraph here.
Happy Reading! And share what you've read so far :)

Have decided my first book of the year is actually finishing Authority. DNF'd it yesterday when I realized there was no way I could finish it in time for new years but you know what? my goal for this year is to read whatever I want, so finishing a series I couldn't finish last year but really want to read is very much in line with that.

ive decided recently that im making myself commit to a full reading year for 2023. i really like what i have going on with my watchlist and plan to apply a similar system for my tbr. so far, i think i can manage one book and one collection of short stories/poem a month, ✨HOWEVER✨ i have no idea where i want to start.
i had a tendency to juggle two/three books at one time, which ended up with me having more dnfs than completed ones. not that anything i picked was particularly bad or boring, but having worked in publishing (esp in a position that led to severe burnout) made me feel like it was a chore when it should have been a source of comfort or enjoyment.
wanna get back into that without waiting for The Book to reel me in, yk?
in order to figure out what i want to read this year, i’ve decided to sample my nightstand and take it from there. i have 21 books that i have to cut down to 11 by the end of the month. got no real barometer for how many pages to start, but sufficient enough for me to really get a vibe before i move on.
i will keep the sample list updated throughout the month and see where this goes. tbh, i hope this system sticks!
READ || PASS - The Starless Sea, Erin Morganstern ON THE FENCE? || PASS - Kaikeyi, Vaishnavi Patel READ || PASS - The King of Infinite Space, Lyndsay Faye READ || PASS - Harlem Shuffle, Colson Whitehead READ || PASS - The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, Taylor Jenkins Reid ON THE FENCE? || PASS - Crying in H Mart, Michelle Zauner READ || PASS - Cloud Cuckoo Land, Anthony Doerr (a dnf im picking up again) READ || PASS - Scythe, Neal Shusterman READ || PASS - The Gravity of Us, Phil Stamper READ || PASS - The Regional Office is Under Attack!, Manuel Gonzales READ || PASS - Superminds, Thomas W. Malone READ || PASS - Circe, Madeline Miller ON THE FENCE? || PASS - Ninth House, Leigh Bardugo (a dnf im picking up again) ON THE FENCE? || PASS - I'll Give You the Sun, Jandy Nelson READ || PASS - Babel, R. F. Kuang READ || PASS - The Fifth Season, N. K. Jemisin READ || PASS - Illuminae, Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff (a dnf im picking up again) READ || PASS - Originals, Adam Grant READ || PASS - The Forgetting Time, Sharon Guskin READ || PASS - The Atlas Six, Olivie Blake (a dnf im picking up again)
NOTE: i have an idea what will be on my shortlist for the short stories/poems, but i wont be tracking it as rigorously as the above; theres just no way i can turn off that part of my brain that wants to juggle stories, so this is my solution.
