Lullaby by Chuck Palahniuk
Rating: C-
Carl Streator is a journalist tasked with writing a few articles about Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. As he investigates, he find that many of these deaths happen in the presence of the anthology Poems and Rhymes Around the World all open to the same page. What this page contains is something known as a culling song. Saying or even thinking the poem to someone is lethal, and it’s killed who knows how many over the years. And Carl becomes an involuntary serial killer once the song gets stuck in his brain. It takes all his control to stay in check and stop himself from murdering everyone around him. With real estate agent Helen Hoover Boyle,  her assistant Mona Sabbat, and Mona’s boyfriend Oyster, Carl sets out on a cross-country trip to hunt down every copy of the culling song and eliminate it for good.
--
When it comes to reading a new Chuck Palahniuk book there’s only one thing I know for sure: it’s gonna be fucking weird. Invisible Monsters was weird but good. Haunted was super weird but meh. And this one is weird…and honestly also pretty meh as well. I have another Palahniuk book sitting on my TBR shelf and now I’m dreading it ever so slightly.
The start of this book had me. I was totally agreeing with what the narrator was saying about our constant need to be listening to something, how now there seems to be this avoidance of silence at all costs. That we can’t face silence anymore because then we get to think on the state of things. And I get it. Because it’s true. There are times when I’m doing something and I need noise in the background. Even as I type this review I have music playing as well. Sometimes I don’t want time to think about something too hard, and I like that this is one of the points the author is trying to address. But after a while, the message gets too in your face. It’s repeated far too many times and the impact of it begins to wear off. Now it’s not a hard-hitting statement, it’s just an annoyance. Despite that, I thought this book was going to charm in the same way that Invisible Monsters charmed me. But then things go from hunky-dory to batshit crazy in one page. And I was not ready.
So now we come to the main plot of the story. Journalist Carl Streator goes on a road trip with realtor Helen Hoover Boyle, her assistant Mona, and Mona’s boyfriend Oyster, to track down every copy of the culling song and destroy them. And of course, in typical Palahniuk fashion, these four people are some of the craziest mofos you’ll ever get to read about. They all have issues and want power in their own ways, and the culling song and it’s original source can lead to obtaining that power. But they are all painfully unlikable. I don’t know if that’s the reaction I was supposed to have, but I couldn’t stand these four together. And, ultimately, the way the plot develops feels like such a waste of a good idea. I didn’t have that many expectations, but I definitely didn’t see how this went coming.
The end is a bit of a twist and it’s probably the thing that saved this book in my eyes. I like that nothing is clear, that even then you don’t know who has the power and who’s powerless. Is Carl being used? Is he following his own free will, or is someone else pulling the strings? It’s the uncertainty that I liked.

We sat down with some leaders in the business community of biohazard restoration which is commonly referred to as crime scene cleanup, to discuss a very important top of salaries and wages. As many of you may of seen with recent news coverage discussing the high wages and salary of some of the professionals in this business. We decided to take a deeper look into this controversial business and see exactly what are the wages like and do they really deserve these high salaries.
First we decided to get on the record with some of the owners of a crime scene cleanup company in Hoffman Estates Illinois to find out if the wages we are hearing about are accurate. What we discovered will surprise you and may make you want to look for crime scene cleanup jobs in Hoffman Estates. First, there are a few ways people are paid when they work from crime scene cleanup companies. One is by hourly pay and the average hourly pay is starting at $11 a hour and can easily get as high as $25 a hour with experience. Some people in a company may opt for a crime scene cleanup salary because they are looking for more benefits like health care and home child care. With a salaried position you may have more responsibilities and could be looking at a supervisory position. With a supervisors jobs you could be getting paid a salary anywhere from $40k to start to over $70,000 plus benefits. Although, we should emphasis that the pay for anyone doing crime scene cleanup in Hoffman Estates Illinois may vary drastically. As many people have pointed out to us, not all companies are the big gorillas in the industry. Small companies just starting out may demand more for less, but they may do other things to keep employees and contractors happy. One company we talked to will even provide small amounts of ownership which can add up over time as a way to really get people interested in employment.

No less an authority than FBI agent and mob fighter, William F. Roemer, Jr., considered DeStefano to be the worst torture-murderer in the history of the United States. Samuel DeStefano, Jr. was born on September 13, 1909 in Streator, Illinois. Samuel DeStefano, Sr. was a laborer and later had a produce market. He and his wife Rosalie DeStefano (née Brasco), immigrated from Italy to the United States in 1903. Destefano, Sr., would rise in status and later a real estate salesman. Mad Sam’s father was not an Outfit member and would die of natural causes, in 1942, at age 77. His mother, Rosalie, was a housewife, who throughout her life was supported by the contributions of her children. She died in October 1960. In all, the DeStefanos had six children, four sons and two daughters. In the early 1900s the DeStefano family moved to Herrin, Illinois, where Sam Sr. worked in the local coal mine. After the labor-related turmoil surrounding the Herrin Massacre,(this was a coal mine strike and union members killed several strikebreakers), the DeStefano family moved north to Chicago’s Little Italy. By the age of 17, on September 12, 1926, Sam Jr. was arrested in Chicago as a fugitive for breaking out of jail. He became involved in gang activity and in July, 1927, several hundred Westside gang members showed up threatening violence against a police sergeant for arresting DeStefano and shooting DeStefano’s associate Harry Casgrovi.
