Some studies in my sketchbook, trying to experiment more with line and line expression. The second is a study of cartoonist Hanco Kolk and the characters in his graphic novel Meccano. The first and third are me trying to draw Peter Lorre in a semi-stylised way, mostly using a nib pen or a bamboo pen. The fourth one was inspired by @juicedsumo​ ‘s suggestion to try out a wooden skewer, which was a really nice experiment!

Ever since #inktober2019 , I’ve had the embryo for a story growing inside of me. But whenever I sit down to write it, I get stuck. There’s my own frustration that every time I try to write in a somewhat classical manner, it sounds so artificial to me. There are old habits of mine that resurface, like creating new languages, and trying to pin down the geography and infrastructure and history of this world. Every time I try to draw it, it becomes too literal and it just feels like I’m creating an interesting model rather than a compelling story. I get frustrated because it seems like my skills have matured with me, but my own personal style and voice have lagged behind. The last few months I’ve been trying to break my way of drawing and build it up again. I’ve decided to do that with this story too. Not to focus too much on the plot or structure, but to use it as a way to explore style and voice, while at the same time sketching out this world, and in a way, let it tell its own story. I went to the Gemeentemuseum (now known as Kunstmuseum) today, and I saw A. R. Penck! Love this man, absolutely fantastic. I LOVE how he was trying to create a type of painted language and was using said language to mildly mock the powers that were in his time (DDR, Soviet Union). The work is highly political, which means it’s perfect for me! I tried a little Penck myself, trying to imitate what I think is his technique (lots of paint on a dry pig bristled brush), which is pretty damn hard! I drew Miss Corona here, but it could be any subject.
