Got Summer Sons in paper, decided go read through Andrew/Sam scenes today for fic research and fun, and these are some of my only subjectively hilarious annotations.

Just finished Summer Sons by Lee Mandelo and what. the. fuck. I am forever going to be haunted by this horribly enchanting book the way Andrew was haunted by something that resembled his lost best friend/ almost lover Eddie. I feel I have greived alongside Andrew and am reaching the final stages of acceptance. I recommend this book to any and all people on this earth and beyond.

Summer Sons Sex Week 2022

Hey there fam! I know this isn’t a huge fandom (yet), but I wanted to start a challenge for anyone who wants to dip their toe in writing/drawing/mood boarding/whatever for Summer Sons by Lee Mandelo. This is a challenge I set myself last year for a different fandom and it was a way for me to stretch myself. You can do any pairing and there is no set word count! Drabbles welcome and encouraged as much as full length fics. I’m aware I’m putting this out there on short notice. 

Posting will start on Monday, July 11, 2022 and end Sunday, July 17th, 2022. I will make a collection on Ao3 if you’d like to post it to the collection, or if you want to post it on tumblr just tag it #SummerSonsSexWeek2022 or #SSSW22 and I’ll be sure to reblog it! 

The daily challenges are as follows:

Moanday (July 11) - Something about being loud. It can be about one of the characters being obsessed with how loud their partner gets, it could be about hearing someone moan and listening in, or it could just be about someone making a lot of noise eating chocolate and it turning sexual. Whatever you choose, the main idea is MOANING. We wanna hear it!

Tongueday (July 12) - Tongue-fucking, ass-eating, licking, slurping, whatever! Get those tongues waggling!

Wetday (July 13) - Shower sex, omega slick, pool time shenanigans, spit as lube, whatever. Give us your dirty wet stories. Today is a flash flood zone. 

Thirstday (July 14) - Thirst photos made them do it? Drunk sex? Being turned on when you can’t do anything about it, but fucking obsessing over the person you wanna sex up? Let’s see our faves parched and dying for a drink.

Frotday (July 15) - Frottage! Non penatrative sex that isn’t a blow job or a hand job. Classic clothes on frot? Naked frotting? Sleep frotting? 

Shushday (July 16) - Muffled sex! Are they going to get caught in a semi-public location getting off? Is there someone asleep in the same room as them? Is someone holding a phone conversation while the other is edged? It’s all about controlling your volume. 

Sexday (July 17) - Any kind of sex! Write whatever you want!

it's kind of hilarious to me that Andrew Blur and Sam Halse are some of THE most power-dynamic-coded characters I've read in ages (literally Andrew revels in the feeling of being owned and refers to Sam as a king and holding court all the time and Sam is constantly using pain as a grounding technique for Andrew and he's into it and Andrew is referred to as leashed more times than Ronan Lynch) and they're also the first in ages I don't want to write actual d/s dynamic fanfic for.

I want to write it into their interactions like Mandelo did, but I just can't see them having the conversations necessary to set up an official dynamic. And I apparently can't write d/s fic for characters without at least knowing the conversations they had. I usually have to write them.

The criteria - they have to be hot and humid, they have to be gothic in nature, dark in content, and they have to at least flirt with the paranormal

Summer Sons by Lee Mandelo

This follows Andrew as he moves to a college across the country to step into his dead best friend Eddie's old life as he desperately tries to prove that he must've been murdered. Haunted, both figuratively and literally, angry and grieving, Andrew sets off on a path that leads him to question everything he ever thought he knew about himself and their history together as he fights to accept who he is, who Eddie was, and maybe tries to learn how to live without him. Fast-paced, dark, and super gay.

Water Shall Refuse Them by Lucie McKnight Hardy

After the death of her little sister, teenager Nif and her family move to rural Wales for the summer in an attempt to escape their grief. Set in the 1970s during a heatwave the isolation and oppressive weather quickly start to take their toll. With an emotionally absent mother, a father with a wandering eye and a needy younger brother, Nif becomes convinced she's stumbled across her own kind of magic, before catching the attention of the strange boy across the street. Think Shirley Jackson, definitely not YA.

Dark and Shallow Lies by Ginny Myers Sain

Now, this is YA. We follow 17 year old Grey as she returns back to her tiny hometown in the Louisiana Bayou for the summer 6 months after her best friends mysterious disappearance. In a town that claims to be the 'psychic capitol of the world', someone must know something, right? Full of secrets, lies, and a boy who steps out of the forest with storm-bright eyes, this was a quick and twisty atmospheric read.

The Hacienda by Isabel Canas

When political upheaval gets her father executed and his family is left in shame and destitution, Beatriz decides she'll do whatever it takes to find security in her life again. When a handsome Don proposes, Beatriz jumps at the chance to accept and move out to his countryside estate with big plans for the future, but it doesn't take long before she's spending her nights terrorised by a mysterious entity inside her new home, forcing her to seek help from the strangest of places. The imagery is creepy, the tone is tense, there's a hot priest, what more do you want?

Cold Moon Over Babylon by Michael McDowell

Probably the darkest book on this list, and definitely the oldest. When a young girl is brutally murdered within sight of her home, it starts a chain of events that will see a family destroyed, secrets and lies exposed, and a vengeful creature that looks almost human to rise from the river as the town that surrounds it starts to crumble. The people are unlikeable, the book is old, the content is Dark - you've been warned.

Ghost Wood Song by Erica Waters

Also YA but this time for the bisexuals. Shady Grove can call ghosts from the grave with her music, just like her daddy could, but everyone knows that only trouble comes from playing for the dead. When her brother is accused of murder, Shady decides to embrace her birthright and use any power she can to clear his name. It's sweet, it's sad, it's lyrical, and there's a little bi love triangle sprinkled in to sweeten the sorrows. It's also a debut!
