Butch Yang Week: Sunflowers

Yang: (passed out in the garden after a busy morning of lawn care)

Blake: (carrying out a tray of lemonades) Yang! Kids! Time to take a break!

Yin & Keir: (snickering next to Yang’s sleeping form)

Blake: What are you two doing?

Yin & Keir: Nothing!

Blake: Mm-hmm (gently moves the twins away and sees Yang sleeping between rows of Sunflowers with a wreath of sunflower petals woven into her hair in braids, and sunflower head belt buckle, slightly clashing with the dirt covered cargo pants and white tank top)

Keir: I told you we were gonna get busted.

Yin: The sunflowers were your idea. I wanted to use daisies.

Blake: (holding back giggles as she ushers the kids inside) Enough, you two. Let your Dagon sleep.

-30 Minutes Later-

Yang: (wakes up and notices that she's covered in sunflower petals with a whole sunflower head woven into her beltbuckle) .....Note to self. Never sleep in the garden ever again.

Okay we've briefly turned into a Ted Lasso blog because I finally caught up tonight and holy FUCK sunflowers was unparalleled. Literally everything about the episode could be explored for hours but I really just want to quickly highlight one thing:

Obviously everyone is talking about the newest layer of Jamie's trauma that's just been revealed (and good on Roy for immediately acknowledging it as trauma!!), and I'm not going to try and do any sort of deep dive because a hundred people have already done it better than I ever could, but there's one thing that no one seems to be talking about, and maybe it's because I just binged the whole show in two weeks so I remember season one better than folks who watched it when it came out, but y'all remember the charity auction, right? First time we meet Jane, Rupert shows up and steals the show from Rebecca, Ted forces Roy and Jamie to sit at the same table because he's trying to make them get along, and, oh yeah, everyone's bidding on the players?

Now, we laugh when Roy and Keeley are messing with Jamie about having to have sex with the highest bidder and he sort of freaks out and then angrily overcompensates when he realizes they aren't serious. I think Jamie from this episode is mostly remembered as being a dick and a shitty boyfriend (and yes what he did pitting Bex and Keeley against each other in the actual bidding war was definitely an asshole move). On a first watch he seems unreasonably upset about what everyone else thinks is a harmless joke. And since not being able to handle people taking the piss plays into our already established understanding of Jamie as a self-centered jerk who's not all that smart, we don't think to wonder if there's any more specific reason for his reaction than wounded pride.

I'm not doing deep character analysis tonight, as I've already said. But. Uh. Reevaluating that scene after what we learn in Sunflowers about Jamie's sexual history and trauma,,, might give it a different context

Anyway, yeah, I'll just leave y'all to think about that. And fuck James Tartt Sr I hope Roy beats his ass

yn stares at herself in the mirror. she smiles as she runs her hands down her dress. yn is nervous, but ultimately she’s excited to be marrying the man she’s fallen so deeply for!

she hears a knock on the door. thinking it was most likely her mom or one of her sisters, she tells them to come in. to her surprise it had been eddie’s uncle wayne. she smiles at him as he walks over to her.

“you know, i never thought my boy would marry. he’s always been the type to only date and wait for the heartbreak. finding you, it’s been the best thing to happen to him!” wayne states.

yn sheds a few tears as she grabs wayne’s hands. “he’s the best thing that’s happened to me too, wayne.”

“thank you for making my boys happy, yn. i don’t know what i could do for you in return, but i owe you everything and more.” yn hugs wayne before they both hear a knock on the door.

wayne kisses the top of yn head before her father walks over to her. “you ready, darling?”

yn glanced at herself one last time before grabbing her fathers hand. “ready, dad!”

“lets get you married!”

yn and eddie laugh as they dance around with their friends and family. eddie kisses the top of her head. “so, what’s next for us misses munson?”

yn blushes. “hmm, we got a honeymoon in aruba, curtesy to my father.”

“yeah? gotta pay him back somehow.”

yn rolls her eyes. “it’s a gift, eds!”

eddie twirls yn, dips her, before holding her tightly. “meh, we’re still gonna pay him, huh? even if it’s just because. gotta continue to win the in laws approval. even if we are married now!” eddie smirks.

yn kisses him passionately. “whatever you want. im just here for the ride.” she jokes.

“yeah?”

“mhm!”

“you’re something else, darling.”

“you married me.”

“best damn decision ive made!”
