Hobie sat behind Mielle on the bed, her hands gently running through Mielle’s freshly detangled hair. Hobie had seen her hair wet and decided she was a perfect candidate for goddess braids, and Mielle had gone along without complaint. Hobie was tender-headed like her, and took care of her sister locs herself, so Mielle trusted that her girlfriend wouldn’t tug her hair. Hobie kissed her head before she grabbed the rat-tail comb and began to part Mielle’s hair with surgical precision. She hummed Destroy Boys to herself as she worked, using the edge control Mielle usually used to do her edges as a parting gel, slowly running a single finger over each of the parts, making sure they were completely straight. 

Mielle closed her eyes, thinking back on how they ended up here after all these months. It’d started with a schoolgirl crush, with Mielle watching Hobie swing through the air, not sure why her heart was beating a hundred miles an hour whenever Hobie called her love. Mielle sighed as Hobie began to braid, relaxing completely in the hands of her lover. Hobie had been the one to ask her out - Mielle was way too nervous - and their first date had been them tagging the local GOP operation building. Her dad hadn’t been pleased, but he got over it.

He was significantly less thrilled when Hobie pierced Mielle’s septum, but seeing how happy his daughter was with it, he let it go. Oftentimes, Mielle and her mom would joke about Jeff being a ‘girl dad’, and letting her get away with practically anything. Mielle knew the real reason behind it, though. It’d been such a shock to them when she came out that they let anything slide that made her feel less dysphoric. That was probably why they’d warmed up to Hobie so easily, knowing the girl was one of the main reasons Mielle had been so happy recently. 

Hobie began to braid with quick, practiced movements. Mielle looked up at her girlfriend, admiring the adorable expression of concentration she had. Her chain (really Mielle’s grandmother’s chain) was hanging from her neck, dangling over Mielle’s face. Hobie met her eyes, smiling and turning pink. Mielle grinned back.

“You’re gonna have to teach me how to retwist, so I can return the favor,” Mielle said, still looking into her girl’s eyes. Hobie snorted and returned to her braiding. “I’m serious, Hobie. I want to give you the same things you give me.”

“I believe you, pretty bird. It’s just… I’ve seen you try and braid 42-Miles’ hair, and, well, you’re not very good at it.” Mielle let out an exaggerated offended gasp, and Hobie rolled her eyes. “Come out of it, love.” Mielle huffed.

“I could totally do it.” She said defiantly. Hobie leaned down and kissed her nose, which immediately mollified her. “Alright, I’ll let it go. Just this once, though.” Hobie nodded, trying to keep the humor out of her expression. Mielle couldn’t stay annoyed with her girl for long, though. She was just too beautiful, too funny, too Hobie to get annoyed with. It was much to her chagrin whenever they fought, which wasn’t often. 

They sat in companionable silence for the next few hours, occasionally taking breaks to watch a few episodes of their favorite soap opera or to infodump about whatever they were hyper-fixated on at the meaning. Mielle felt so unbelievably lucky to have such a perfect girlfriend. She wondered what she’d ever done to deserve Hobie. There wasn’t a better girl in any of the universes - no one clicked with her as Hobie did. They were made for each other, plain and simple. “Alright, pretty bird. You’re all finished.” Hobie said, nudging Mielle so she sat up. Mielle grinned excitedly and the two of them went to the bathroom. Mielle looked in the mirror and saw herself staring back. Her, the real her, the version of her that looked just how she’d dreamed of back when she had short hair and a deep voice. It was everything she’d ever wanted, and she had the only girl she’d ever wanted by her side for every second of it.
