Second chances

In today’s flashback we learn that Mr Robot was with Elliot since he was a kid. An imaginary friend that never went away. Only this time Elliot’s determined to give it a serious try.

This was supposed to be Elliot's farewell tour, wasn't it?

Darlene comes by and she knows something is off. She wants to stay but Elliot manages to placate her with empty promises of bonding tomorrow. But I love  that Elliot could talk to her like he talks to us. That he told her the truth about himself and Mr Robot. All the failed attempts to get rid of him. All the reasons he stayed. The truth about liking what he does. Theirs is my favourite relationship on the show. And I love that she can touch him and he doesn’t flinch. 

Then Elliot gave away Flipper. He said it was just for the day but we knew better. You don’t delete yourself from others life for just a day.

And finally he visits Mobley’s and Trenton’s families and tries to apologise. He can’t tell them the truth but he tries to share good memories and kind words. Mobley’s brother only cares how this set-up destroyed his own life. But Trenton’s family loved her and are glad to meet some kindness in a world that condemns them and their daughter without second thought. They know she was a good person. They believe she was set-up. And they are right but that’s even more dangerous than Muslim hating public. Whiterose destroys lives on a whim and she would crush them all if they protest so Elliot can’t tell them the truth.

This is what Whiterose did not just to Trenton and Mobley but also to their families and community. If Price was her only victim it’d be schadenfreude but his lesson is not worth the death toll it required.

But that little act of kindness saves Elliot’s life. Trenton’s little brother, the one whose birthplace was her nick, follows him around and forces him to think about something else than self-pity and blaming himself for all that has happened. Elliot may wish he was dead but that doesn’t solve anything. And he forgot other things he wanted - like seeing Back to the Future II on Back to the Future day. And the kid lies all along just to hang with someone who cared about his sister but it’s because he is dealing with the same loneliness and loss Elliot experienced as a kid. Just instead of creating his replacement companion he latches onto one.

And Elliot is too responsible to let kid be alone in the world that falls apart even more every day. There is trash everywhere and curfews but E Copr get to come out shiny with their ECoin deal. There might never be any justice but the world is not all depressing hellhole. We get kindness across faiths and ages. And cosplay on Back to the Future Day. And lollipops.

So Elliot undos his delete. Forces Mobley’s brother to undelete Sunil from his life too. And then even restores his connection to Angela. He couldn’t forgive her on his last day but now that he decided to stick around he finds some compassion. He gets the guilt that’s unravelling her and the need to undo everything. Need to wish away that mistake.

And Elliot gets his chance to fix his. Trenton’s automatic deathswitch email gets to him with a roadmap how to undo the 5/9 hack. Do not delete, Elliot.

But of course the ultimate undo of  time travel and changing the timeline is still being dangled at us. Way to tease us with it even more Sam Esmail. I hope you and Whiterose are not just stringing us along.

Also, the kid is right, The Martian is fun. You could do watching something lighter than Massacres of the Bourgeois.
