TV Show Analysis

The Television show that I chose to analyze is the short-lived Sci. Fi. contest, Who Wants To Be A Superhero, by Stan Lee. This show is so wonderful it makes me cry when ever I return to it. Basically, it starts out American Idol- style, with massive amounts of people auditioning in front of Stan Lee in their homemade costumes, trying to sell their superhero identity. In the beginning 11 contestants are chosen. Every week through a series of challenges ranging from following clues on a hunt to find a villain, to helping a crying kid find 

her mom, to talking with a class of 5th graders, contestants are tested on their character and ability to live by the standards of a real superhero. That is the part that really gets to me, contestants are expected to be the ideal super role models for society. Their costumes are flashy but the emphasized content that makes a true superhero is anything but superficial. I thought this would be a relevant show to analyze because we have read about the lack of representation on positive role models of non-white races, and the effect it has on how non-white people view themselves and how white people view people who don’t look like them. This show is so much about what counts on the inside and how one conducts themselves that I can’t imagine race plays much of a role. I had never watched this and payed attention to the races of the contestants and how they were portrayed for the audience. So, I watched season one, again.

During the 1960’s people of Milwaukee fought for multicultural representation in school curriculum. We read about Asian American artists fighting for representation of their existence in art galleries. Society is becoming more and more aware that we are a multicultural country and that as many different walks of people need to be represented in all areas of life. I thought it was interesting that out of the 11 original contestants, only 2 were black, and the rest were white. One lady super hero might have been Latina, but it was never mentioned, and I can’t really tell.  Something that I think is interesting, is that now that I am watching this show through this class’ perspective, I think that one of the black superheroes was just chosen at the beginning because he was black. He never stood out as a good superhero in any way. Is it still good to even racial representation if you are just adding a non-white person just to even the representation, because he really was a sub-par superhero, and was eliminated pretty quickly.

The other non-white superhero made it to the end and she was a true superhero, doing the show to make a point to her kids that who you are; what makes you different, is what makes you great and that you need too accept yourself, and not  let bullies get you down, because that is how the villain wins. She had a true message and was loved by the kids and her fellow contestants. Her name was Fat Mama. This is interesting because she fulfills by her own will the ‘Mammy’ character that we were taught is a negative stereotype for non-sexualized, helpful, large, black women, in our week about African American representation. This stereotype is a key part of her character and what makes her who she is on the deepest level. She made it to the end, 2nd place and proud. Even through she stereotyped herself she was well represented in the show as a true superhero.

I really think that Who Wants To Be A Superhero represents different kinds of people for who they are on the inside and the virtues that they live and act by. Their audience was probably mostly white people and most of the people who auditioned were, so it makes sense that white people had more representation. But, the purpose of the show was to show what it takes to be a superhero and it had nothing to do with race or culture, but behavior and virtues.   Who Wants To Be A Superhero normalizes judging our heros based on their caring nature, good character, and principles they live by. Normalizing non-superficial judgement.

The brunette blinked as she took the box from Bryce's outstretched arms, setting it down on a surface so that she could open the box and have a look at what was inside. When she saw the gifts, though, she smiled.

"That's so sweet, Bryce..." she said, before frowning slightly. "But I didn't get you anything for Hanukkah..."
