Octavia E. Butler's Parable of the Sower: The Opera-A genre-defying work of new opera, drawing from two centuries of Black music by Toshi Reagon and Bernice Johnson Reagon. I first met Toshi & Her mother Bernice at the Michigan Womyn’s Music fest in 2011 and was smitten with her + her style of music, a blend of rock/folk/funk and spiritual; not unlike her mother’s legendary vocal group, Sweet Honey in the Rock. Now Toshi and her mother have taken Octavia E.Butler’s genius sci fi work, Parable of the Sower, and composed it as an operatic theatrical piece. They need your help before December 28 to fulfill their kickstarter goals and bring it to worldwide attention. In my opinion there is such a deep need for Butler’s work and voice to be heard by every generation in the time we’re in now. I know every time I post a photo with my fiancée I am going to lose followers. I feel silly for even noticing this, frankly. But it's a thing that has happened constantly since my coming out. I'm not discouraged about the followers - it is what it is. Part of me feels like cleaning house is a positive thing. But there's another part of me that is frustrated and discouraged because it makes me feel like I have to choose between growing my platform for my art (which is my livelihood) and celebrating my love (which has given me life). I'd love to post photos with A. without simultaneously feeling a compulsion to then plan how and what to post to try to fill the gap. It feels shitty, that people can love my art and simultaneously not love my self. I know I'm not the only one who is trying to navigate this clumsy middle of loving my art and loving my life and not knowing quite what that means for me on a practical level. I have plenty of friends who've been through the same wringer. • SO. This is what I want to say as I try to process how to actually contribute to the conversation in my disappointment: this #pride month (and every month after), if you love queer people and if you have the means, then support queer artists. Support their songs, their books, their poems, their films. Share their work with your friends. Share boldly and generously. I am going to be posting work, quotes, songs, etc from artists and creatives I love for the rest of June. Follow my story and feed to stay tuned in to who some of my favorites are, and send your own suggestions and favorites my way. We can make the awkward, rewarding but often painful journey way easier for one another when we love each other in these practical, simple ways. And in the meantime, I'm going to keep celebrating the very present love in my life rather than dwelling on the disappearing strangers who withhold it. Go in freedom.
