Fast Fauna Facts #8 - Convict Surgeonfish (Acanthurus triostegus)
Family: Surgeonfish Family (Acanthuridae)
IUCN Conservation Status: Least Concern
While the Convict Surgeonfish's odd name may make it sound as though it's being charged with medical malpractice, it makes sense given its anatomy; like all surgeonfish species it has a pair of small, sharp-tipped retractable spurs at the base of its tail (often compared to a surgeon's scalpel) which are used to ward off predators attacking from behind, while the "convict" in its name refers to the prominent black bars that run down its light-coloured body which may serve to break up its outline in order to make it harder for predators to spot, or may serve to allow other Convict Surgeonfish to recognise members of their species in order to form schools and/or mate. The newly-hatched larvae of this species have largely transparent bodies, and as they grow the distinctive stripes seen in adults develop even before the rest of the body's colouration does.

surgeonfish are so funny. i can't help but notice you have two giant poisonous knives that you use to kill people... you're just like this type of human that uses small sterile knives to heal people

NEXT UP ON THE SEPTEMBER UPDATE
Glass animals!
These real animals have transluscent properties, where their skin is see through and you're able to see their skeleton and insides... of course I tried my best to cutify them for you all!
This is a series of charms that utilises the transparency of the acrylic to make these creatures pop out, and with the addition of double sided epoxy it gives the effect of holding a real animal (pretty weird to experience!)
With 8 designs I'm sure there's some which catch your eye 👀

Daily fish fact #628
Tomini surgeonfish!
Tumblr media
This fish belongs to a genus commonly called bristletooth tangs, which get their name from their numerous small flexible teeth! The tomini surgeonfish, also called yellowtip or orangetip bristletooth, sports a caudal fin that is forked in juveniles but becomes crescent-shaped in adulthood.

Fishuary day 4: Surgeonfish

I chose a juvenile Chevron Tang!
(Ctenochaetus hawaiiensis)
I love the way the colors came out on this one. The stripes took a hot second to make, but we got em done.
Ignore his creepy eyes, my reference photo had the silly layers/rings so I decided to add them T-T

Fish-uary 4th: Surgeonfish
Eyestripe Surgeonfish (acanthurus dussumieri)
One of the larger surgeonfish species, they can reach almost 2 feet long! My local fish store has a big boy in their lagoon tank named Steve.
