THE PICTURE-PERFECT SHOT x THE REAL MOMENT 🎬
— '68 Comeback Special (NBC, 1968)
Tumblr media
Outtakes with Elvis and Susan Henning as filmed for the '68 Comeback Special on June 28, 1968.
The music playing on the background during this taping is Andy WIlliams cover of "Downtown" by Petula Clark, a hit record of hers. For another scene during the '68 Comeback Special' production that was filmed that same day, still between Elvis and Susan, they also played in the background, songs by Phyllis Diller, a medley of "I Get A Kick Out of You", "Blues in the Night", "I Enjoy Being a Girl", "My man", "Gonna Wash That Man Right Out Of My Hair". Williams and Diller were taping their shows at NBC at the same time as the '68 Comeback Special was in production — respectively "The Andy Williams Christmas Special" (Williams' anual TV special airing from 1964 to 1974 and then again produced in 1994, all by NBC) and "The Beautiful Phyllis Diller Show" (comedy show).
We have a low quality video with a few more outtake scenes from the '68 Comeback Special, here:

And this one is the full thing, in a good quality:

Why the producers played those songs while Elvis was recording the scenes with Susan Henning for the Bordello segment of his TV special, I have no idea, but it surprised me quite a bit. I thought they would be playing exclusively Elvis' songs - which they obviously did at some points because Elvis had to dub some of them for the scenes, but not the entire time as I thought. If playing other performers' songs during the Bordello scenes shootings, for any given reason, my bet would be that they would be playing something more suitable to create a certain atmosphere to "help" the actors getting in the mood for those sensual scenes. Maybe the intention was the opposite, a way of Steve Binder to break the mood and to make things less... hot... in the studio, per say, or more likely he was just messing up with Elvis. I have no idea.
Anyway, Elvis and Susan also seem quite surprised and amused by the music playing in the background. Very interesting choice of songs indeed… and Elvis' playfulness while they were filming those scenes, ugh, lovely! Every time I dig deeper into Elvis' career something new comes to my knowledge that surprises me even more.

In Memory of Queen Elizabeth II: Her Majesty’s Life in Portraits
(Elizabeth Alexandra Mary; 21 April 1926 – 8 September 2022)
Queen Elizabeth II, Britain’s longest reigning monarch, passed away peacefully on Thursday at the age of 96.
The world-beloved queen was an inspiration to numerous artists and resulted in a multitude of unforgettable images in every imaginable medium during her 70-year reign.
Together, The Queen’s official portraits, nearly 1,000 of them, present a portrait of a woman unflinching in her sense of duty. But they also reveal someone who has repeatedly embraced change, new ideas and experimentation through her sitting for such a wide range of portrait artists since she became Queen in 1952.
Arthur Machin’s portrait used on postage stamps. Photo: Jack Taylor/Getty,
If official imagery helps to mythologise a monarch, Arthur Machin did more to epitomise the idea of Queen Elizabeth than any other artist. Commissioned by the Stamp Advisory Committee, Arthur Machin developed his profile of the Queen in 1967. Known as the “definitive” in philately circles, it has since been reproduced more than 220 billion times and is still used on stamps today.

Fines during Covid pandemic three times more likely to be given to black people in England and Wales
Exclusive: research is most detailed yet of who got fined and fairness of use of police power to enforce rules
Vikram Dodd, 31/05/2023
Fines during the pandemic were three times more likely to be given to black people and seven times more likely to be issued in the poorest areas, research commissioned for Britain’s police chiefs has revealed.
The study covering England and Wales showed racial disparity for every single force. In one area, ethnic minorities were up to eight times more likely to be fined. It presents further evidence of ethnic disparity in the use of police powers. Most forces deny they are institutionally racist, as does the government.
The report was commissioned by the National Police Chiefs’ Council and conducted by academics at the University of Edinburgh. The NPPC did not publish the findings, to the surprise of those who produced it.
The report’s co-author Prof Susan McVie said: “There was not a single force area that did not have a higher disparity rate for ethnic minority groups.”
Andy George, president of the National Black Police Association, said: “The research highlights yet again that policing has a systemic issue with racism which needs to be admitted and dealt with.”
The study also found people living in the poorest areas were more likely to experience fines than those in the wealthiest areas.
Policing claims it is committed to a race action plan, triggered by the mass protests after the murder of George Floyd by a police officer in the US in May 2020. Critics say three years on policing in the UK has achieved little or nothing.
full article here
so like tl/dr: this is a water is wet article and study. as soon as they began fining people during lockdown, we knew that poc were going to be targeted more than white folks.
weve known the police system in england and wales has systemic racism issues for decades. at least since the murder of stephen lawrence in 93.
and obviously, water is wet studies are still important because we can then point to them as empirical evidence when discussing politics and public policy, etc.
but whats very important to mention is that despite commissioning this study, the national police chief's council decided to not publish it. the npcc is the representative body for police chiefs in britain, and unsurprisingly, they decided to just not release the evidence of systemic racism that they found.
dont you love living in this "democratic" country where peaceful protest is illegal, politicians tell poor people to just not eat if they cant afford food, and the police specifically hide clear evidence of institutional racism?
