this here, with you. there’s little else i could ask for- “i love you, thank you for waiting.” goes unsaid, but the sentiment remains.
( commissions open | do not repost ) historical/ship rambling under the cut ! <3
I'm normal about AmeSuzie (lying). The idea is simple, picnic but 1950s !! Ish, lol. The time frame is around 1945 to early 1950s– point is, Alfred and Suzie just got back home from war. Suzie would've been home from 1941-43 carrying out federal work whilst Alfred was in Europe or the Pacific in service or boosting soldier morale (as Federal Personification, ofc). Suzie, as a Lieutenant Colonel of the WACs, served in the years 1943-45, mainly in the States (via Manhattan Project in 1943) and only going to Europe a few times. Normally, she wouldn't have been allowed to go overseas bc of the project, but her presence in Europe was personally requested by one Mr. USA himself <3 They got home a week or two after the Potsdam Conference in '45 before Alfred was eventually swept away again, this time to Japan post-Potsdam Declaration.

Pride and Prejudice
Classic and loose adaptions from 1940, 1967, 1980, 1995, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2012, 2016, 2018, 2019
The second of Jane Austen’s novels, first published in 1813, is the most often adapted, inspiring various different takes on it. The ones pictures above are detailed below:
Pride and Prejudice (1940 Film)
This black and white film departs from the original novel in some (or should I say many?) points

Lizzie’s videos amount to 100 episodes + 10 Q&A, but shorter series enrich the story by offering other characters’ perspectives, most notably Lydia’s (and also Georgiana’s). A playlist at Pemberley Digital’s Youtube channel features them all in order.
The series has also been adapted into a book, The Secret Diary of Lizzie Bennet (2014), and spawned a sequel novel, The Epic Adventures of Lydia Bennet (2015).

Features 100 episodes in the International cut. The telenovela has been broadcast in other countries and languages (such as Spanish) but as far as I know, not in English.
Pride and Prejudice: Atlanta (2019 TV Film)
Loose adaption set in modern Atlanta, USA. All-black cast. Written by Tracy McMillan, directed by Rhonda Baraka
Starring Tiffany Hines as Elizabeth Bennet, Juan Antonio as Will Darcy, Raney Branch as Jane Bennet, Brad James as Charles Bingley, Reginae Carter as Lydia Bennet, Carl Anthony Payne as Rev. Collins, among others.
*****
Personal favorites: 2005, then 1995. But also: The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, Orgulho e Paixão
I also enjoyed Atlanta and, while it’s been a while since I’ve seen Bride and Prejudice, it’s got Indian musical numbers so c’mon, one gotta watch it.
Back to the closer adaptions, despite its age, 1980 is also good! 1940 is...very different, but fun in its own way.
In fact, while I find some of these versions weaker, I could find enjoyment in all of them - but maybe that’s cause I’m a sucker for P&P.

Jennifer Ehle was 24 during filming, which imo is not too old, but ymmv. Thanks for the response about red hair! Tbh, I think the thing that bugs me the most about this is that certain characters in Austen are described as "brown," but apparently colorism in casting means we can't have that - but we CAN have redheads. Marianne canonically has brown skin and dark eyes, but in the '95 movie, she has to be strawberry blonde, which isn't accurate to either the text OR to Regency beauty standards.
Right, my issue isn't that Jennifer Ehle specifically was too old but that the cast as a whole was - Colin Firth was 35, Julia Sawalha was 27, Anna Chancellor (I called her Anna Chamberlain before, I ALWAYS do that and I don't know why) and Susannah Harker were 30, David Bamber was 41, Alison Steadman was 49. The whole baseline was off, which really affects the viewer's perception of the characters. (Similar issue in the 2009 Emma, where Emma and Mr. Knightley were only ten years apart - more palatable
I don't think it's colorism that influences the casting here. It's a cliché to point this out at this point, but in the period saying that a person was brown/dark or had brown/dark skin meant that they looked like Alex Kingston or Olivia Cooke - darker-complected white brunettes. I don't think there's prejudice against white non-hispanic people with slightly darker skin tones and dark hair that's making casting directors look for paler women for these roles. (And again, it's not that they're shunning brunettes across the board, they've deblondified Harriet Smith multiple times.)
It's more likely that because physical descriptions are so rare in Austen, the adapters are just not paying attention to them - when you get down to it, it doesn't really matter what color hair the characters have canonically. When people are making a visual adaptation of a text, they're going to layer in a whole bunch of other concerns, from the stupid (making sure the heroine is the most attractive actress) to the more interesting (symbolism, color theory, etc.); sometimes the production team just wants to have different hair colors for their vision.
As I noted before, it's also inaccurate to the text and to Regency beauty standards for Elizabeth to have a rounder face and smaller nose than Jane, or for Harriet and Mrs. Elton to be etc. etc. etc. I just don't quite get why you're still presenting a handful of redheads not being apparently considered ugly (though it is clearly something that's supposed to make Toni Colette's Harriet less attractive) as a serious, standalone problem for the adaptations when there are a lot of aesthetic changes from the text and from Regency standards in all of them, most of them much more egregious.

Tag Meme!
I was tagged by @readingbooksinisrael. Thanks!!!! 1. Which book are you currently reading? I'm about to put my re-read of The Graveyard book on hold so I can read Catcher in the Rye for bookssentials traveling book project! 2. What’s the best beverage to drink while reading? Green tea, hot or iced, depending on the weather! 3. Are you looking forward to a certain book release? If so, which one? These days I read less series so I don't really look forward to new releases as much. That being said I am looking forward to If We Were Villains by ML Rio 4. What’s your Hogwarts house? Proud Ravenclaw! 5. Spell your name using book titles. Jurassic Park Ender's Game Speaker for the Dead Song of Susannah Iron Cast Eragon 6. Are there any books you would recommend to the rest of us? Hmmm. I'm forever advocating for more people to read The Haunting of Alaizabel Cray and Storm Thief by Chris Wooding. Chains and Forge and great books. Iron Cast is wonderful as well. Tangerine by Edward Bloor. 7. What type of book covers do you find most aesthetically pleasing? I like book covers with a lot going on, like where there's hints and symbols of what's to come and after you finish the book you can look at the cover and almost decode it. 8. What is one genre you want to read more of? For someone who loves sci-fi, I haven't read near enough of it. I'd like to branch cautiously into nonfiction as well. 9. Do you tend to enjoy whatever it is you’re reading or are you a hard sell? It depends. I'll read pretty much anything with good characters, but I'm picky when it comes to good characterization. 10. First ever book crush? Oh gosh. Umm. I'm not sure. My first fictional crush was Danny Phantom (I think) but that was a show. Po from Graceling maybe? I think I had a crush on him. I don't remember. Lol "local aromantic can't remember their crushes." 11. Are there any book-to-movie adaptions where you consider the movie to be better than the book? I love the Pride and Prejudice with Keira Knightley and while I wouldn't call it better than the book I am not bothered by the differences and love it as much as the book. Same with Holes, which is pretty much the only movie that is truly faithful to the book for my standards. 12. How do you arrange your shelves? Right now they're stacked in whatever way they'll fit because I am seriously low on shelf space. When I get shelf space I want to try rainbow. Last time I got this I tagged a lot of people and I don't remember who I've already tagged, so everyone feel free to do this! Tag me in your response

some things really don’t change!!! ( commissions open | do not repost ) more rambling under the cut <33
Suzie didn't get her super strength until the 1840s, which is why she's only barely picking him up by the scruff 💔 In the first few years, she didn't outright dislike him, but she did come to the Colonies with a bit of Loyalist bias (to be expected from British nobility, of course). When faced with the reality of the situation, it was a mix of confusion and some tinge of betrayal. She's not entirely naive, she knows things are not as polished and uncomplicated as they make it sound in the books, but seeing it upfront was an unpleasant wake-up call for sure. Her early duties (before there was an American government) then involved keeping an eye on Alfred and sending letters to ol' Britain, making sure he's being a good colony 🥲 those letters were only half truthful, i'm sure. Alfred is unfortunately terribly charismatic.
As for the 1940s, the real reason they let her out of the country in '44 even though she was deeply involved in Project Manhattan was because they needed someone to stop Alfred from acting like a fool 💔💔💔

ma'am I don't mean to be rude but uh your uhH. Your UHHHH... um... uhhHhh.......
Painting practice with Suzie I did a while back 🥴☝ I love it but i'm on the fence about transitioning to this style fully just bc it's... well, it's a little time consuming and i'm an impatient chef in my silly little kitchen,, i need my silly little morsels of self-indulgent content Immediately FJFNJFJ but all that aside I really do enjoy how this piece looks !!! Hmmm have some updated Suzie HCs now ig :
☆ one of those people that you *think* is okay with someone based on the neutrality of ther exchange but when the other person leaves she just Scoffs. like "wow get a load of that idiot 😒". she may love Alfred despite his being an idiot but like, that unfortunately leaves her with little energy to deal with other idiots.
☆ The Stare of Death. Like the stares that moms give their kids when they want to scold them for acting up but can't bc they're in public. Do not employ unless absolutely necessary because it Will break a man. Marianne and Francis compare it to Medusa and she cannot disagree.
☆ top 10 people never to pick an argument with bc she can and will eat you alive. insane memory, will bring up something you did in january 13 1876 play-by-play.
oh and also stan AmeSuzie goodbye

I.. I love them so much 😭 Here're some things of note !!!: ☆ Despite the actual age gap, Alfred and Suzie appear physically the same age (roughly 21). ☆ For you non-metric gang, their heights are roughly 5'3" and 6'4", and they have a 13 inch height gap fhfhfhd 😭💖
