Falling in love in a coffee shop- Remus Lupin

I think that possibly, maybe I'm falling for you Yes there's a chance that I've fallen quite hard over you I've seen the paths that your eyes wander down I want to come too

It's freezing cold, snow thick in the air and ice layering the streets as Remus Lupin winds his way through the store fronts of Diagon Alley. He was cold, too cold, hand feeling like ice and tips of his ears red and so mainly because of the cold, and partly because he wanted a little silence he knows he won't get if he returns to the flat he shares with James, Sirius and Peter, he shoves his way into a small cafe.

He'd been in before, he thinks, at least he knew of it's existence. Next to the little bookshop that he'd found a load of hand painted hardback copies of muggle classics that he's obsessed over for so long his friends had gifted the complete collection to him for his birthday a few months ago.  

If he'd been in before, he was certain she wasn't there. He'd remember her, he knows that. Behind the counter, sipping a steaming liquid from a mug clad in an oversized sweater and reading from a book, the cafe wasn't empty, but the customers were all served and at tables, she didn't seem to have noticed Remus' arrival.

She seems focused on the book, eyes scrunched a little and tongue poking out ever so slightly.

He almost wants to turn, to run out of the store because she seems so perfect to him, so utterly heavenly, that he doesn't want to disturb her, doesn't think he has the nerve to speak to her.

"Duckie, you got a customer," It's an older lady, sat in a trio of older ladies with plates of scones and a little teapot that pours tea into their china mugs whenever they empty.

"Shit, thanks Sue," She mutters, grabbing a bookmark from the counter and placing it into the book which she places on the counter before turning to Remus. "Sorry about that," She smiles

"It's no worries," He smiles politely surprised he's managing to not trip over his own tongue with the way she's looking up at him, taking a glance at the cover he smiles "Jane Eyre, it's a classic. Can't blame you for being distracted,"

"I know people think it's odd to read muggle books but I love them, guilty pleasure y'know?" She shrugs, he smiles, she's warm. If that's the right word, he's not sure. But something about her comforts him, her voice is calming and her eyes shine and he feels like he's known her forever.

"I understand, I'm guilty of the same thing," He shrugs, she grins up at him, blushing a little when she meets his eye.

"Did you want something?" She questions

"Tea please, milky one sugar,"

"Sure," She nods, turning away from the till to start preparing the drink. "Staying in or to go?" She calls over her shoulder, he wants to stay, to bask in the aura of her but isn't quite sure he knows how to behave when he feels so drawn to her. He almost says to go, until he sees the small smile on her face

"Staying here please," He smiles politely

"Go take a seat, I'll bring it over," She instructs. He nods, with a smile.

He crosses to a table in the corner, actually looking around the place now. Nothing matches, not really, no two same big cosy arm chairs, or little wooden tables. No matching sets, yet everything is cohesive, the same vibe, the whole place oozes personality.

She fits in well, he notes as he tries to act like he's not staring at her. The way she hums as she works and how she chats to the older women like she's known them her whole life after she drops his tea off.

He stays for maybe 15 minutes, everything about the place is comforting to him, or maybe it's just her. He isn't sure. The mug though runs dry and he knows his friends will wonder where he is, so he stands, tightening the scarf around his neck and shrugging his coat back on before approaching the counter.

She looks up from her book at the sound of approaching footsteps, she wasn't really reading anymore. Instead admiring the boy from afar, wishing she had the confidence to go and speak to him "How much do I owe you?"

"It's on the house," She smiles politely

"Really, I insist-" He protests but she shushes him with a smile

"It's always on the house for first time customers,"

"That's not true," One of the older ladies call

"New rule Betty," She states, throwing a look at the woman

"It's always on the house for cute boys," The woman from earlier, Sue teases

"Leave her be ladies," The third woman, Maggie, interrupts

"Please ignore them," She speaks, red blush on her cheeks

"Sure, I'm happy to pay,"

"It's alright, really, it's on the house,"

"Thank you. It's very kind," He smiles to her

"I hope to see you around,"

"Yeah, yeah you too," Remus nods, dropping double the amount for the mug of tea in the tip jar before exiting the coffee shop.

He returns, three days later, having finally been able to come up with an excuse to go into town that none of the boys had piggybacked onto. He didn't want to take them, knowing they would be able to spot from a mile the crush he had on her.

It wasn't his best idea, given the hangover he was suffering, but he knew they'd all be way too bothered with their own hangovers to want to join him on his trip to town. He hadn't realised, until he was almost there, that he didn't even know if she'd be working.

He was grateful though, when upon opening the door, he saw her. She's sat in an armchair this time, with the same three ladies from before at the table she's at. It's an odd time, past the morning rush but not quite time for the lunch break clients so she'd busied herself with talking to her favourite regulars.

"He's back," Sue teases in a singsong voice, Remus blushing from his spot in the open door. She's blushing too though, so he feels a little better.

"Hi," He smiles, she smiles politely as she stands back up.

"Hey, what can I get for you? Same as last time?" She questions, crossing to the counter.

"Please," He smiles

"Staying here?"

"Yeah," He nods, he hadn't intended to stay, really he wanted to be back in his bed, but something about the almost hopeful glint in her eyes has him changing his mind.

"I'll bring it over," She smiles, he nods gratefully and goes back to the same table as before. Eyes staring out of the window and hood drawn over his pounding head.

"Big night?" She questions, placing the mug in front of him

"Yeah, my mates don't know when to stop," He admits with a chuckle

"Seems they never did," She comments offhandedly, his eyes widen in shock

"You know me?"

"Remus Lupin, Gryffindor, you were friends with Sirius, James and Peter, class of 77." She shrugs, like the knowledge is casual

"You went to school with us?" He questions, shocked he hadn't remembered her, or even noticed someone who he now felt so drawn to

"Not quite, I was in Hufflepuff and I graduated 78, our paths never crossed. My friends all just fancied Sirius so I kinda knew who you were,"

"You didn't?"

"Sirius Black? Christ no- I mean, sorry I know you guys are close but he is like- just not my type at all,"

"I'm gonna bring him here and you can tell him that, it'll bring him back to earth a bit," He chuckles

"Anytime Lupin," She smiles,

"I didn't catch your name by the way, brains a bit fuzzy,"

"It's Y/N," She smiles politely, "Hope you feel better," She adds, flouncing back across the coffee shop to sit with the older ladies who are calling her over now.

"Sure," He nods, watching as she prepares his regular order

"We have some cakes and pastry left that I'm only gonna throw away so they're free if you want any," She offers, passing a bag to him as he thanks her and tells him to help himself to whatever.

"Thanks," He smiles when she passes him the to go mug, a bag of goodies he knows his friends will be grateful for, though they'll definitely demand to know where he got them in his other hand. "You mind if I wait with you while you close up and walk you back home? It's dark and getting kinda late?" He questions, not liking the thought of her out in the streets alone.

"You don't have to," She smiles

"I'd feel a lot better knowing you got home okay," He admits, avoiding eye contact

"If you're sure you don't mind," She agrees.

It doesn't take her long to lock up. Throwing out anything that can't be sold, wiping down the surfaces and sweeping the floor. Remus offers to help but she denies, telling him to sit and drink his tea when he tries.

He lets her lead him out of the store, telling him how she lives in a crappy little apartment not too far away, above a robe shop. "So, the coffee shop?" He questions

"Yeah, my parents own it. The bookshop next door too. I want to work in art somehow, I paint, but till that picks up I run the coffee shop," She informs

"What do you paint?" He questions

"People mostly," She announces, turning to look at him "What do you do?"

"I want to teach." He admits, she nods "Never really tell people that. I work for Dumbledore right now though. Can't really say anything else," He explains

"I get it. Marls is the same,"

"You know Marlene?"

"Yeah, we grew up together," She confirms, "You know Sue, that's her grandma and Maggie's mine, they went to school together,"

"Probably could have worked that out. Marls and Sue are one and the same,"

"Yeah," She nods, "What would you teach?"

"Defence against the dark arts," He shrugs, blushing a little. He'd never told anyone what he wanted to do. With his condition it was pretty much impossible so he didn't even really admit it to himself. "Was always pretty good at it,"

"Think you'd be a good teacher,"

"Really?"

"Yeah, you tutored my friend and she thought you were great," She shrugs, coming to a stop in front of a small robe shop and fishing for a key in her pocket. "Thanks for walking me Remus,"

"Of course, thanks for the food," He smiles, holding the bag up a little.

For the next week Remus arrives at the same time everyday, ready to walk her home. Every time she blushes madly at his arrival. She begins to allow him to help her clean up, saving a slice of lemon drizzle cake every morning and placing it on the cake stand three minutes before he's due to arrive as she knows it's the cake he's always most excited to get to take home every time.

She's surprised to see him enter the cafe at 10:30 am, heart sinking when she realises he'd probably not be by later. She liked the 30 minutes they spent together each day. Enjoying his company, he made her laugh, she looked forward to his company all day.

"Hey Rem,"

"Hey darling, you good?" He grins approaching, he'd pissed James off pretty bad. They'd argued for hours the night before and he knew it was his own temper, James did nothing wrong. So here he was, buying the boy a cappuccino cause it was his favourite as a peace offering.

"Yeah, slow morning. Are you?"

"I'm alright," He nods

"The normal?" She questions, placing the knitting needles she'd been using as she looks at him

"Please, and a cappuccino. To take away," He requests with a lazy, easy smile. His brows furrowing in concern when her smile drops "You okay?" He questions, eyes scanning the coffee shop for what could possibly be wrong

"Fine," She's turning away before he can press her any further on the matter, busying herself with the take out cups. She's blinking rapidly as she makes the coffee, heart aching at the thoughts in her mind.

The mystery girl he's buying the coffee for, maybe he's going to drop it to her at work and she'll thank him with a quick peck to his lips, a kiss that means nothing cause she'll get to kiss him another thousand times. Maybe he's going to wake her up with it, or maybe they're meeting for a walk, a date.

She turns, willing herself not to cry.

"She's very lucky," She comments, passing Remus who looks confused the drinks

"Who?" He wonders, eyes scanning her red eyes in concern. He can't fathom the idea she'd be upset at the thought of him buying some girl a coffee, but what else could it be? the little slither of hope weasels it's way in.

"The girl you're buying coffee for," She shrugs, fidgeting under his gaze.

"I'll let James know," He smirks, she blushes wildly

"Oh, James,"

"Yep. We had a fight last night, the cappuccino is a peace offering," He explains

"Is everything okay?" She asks, if there's one thing she's come to know about Remus it's that he loves his friends like family

"I'll let you know tonight when he's received his sorry I'm a dickhead present,"

"Tonight?" She questions, confused

"Tonight, when I come walk you home," He speaks like it's obvious

"Oh, I- I just assumed you wouldn't come. Having your tea now 'nd all,"

"People can drink more than one cup of tea a day y'know darling?"

"Yeah. I'll see you later then," She blushes

"I'll see you then" He confirms, backing out the door with his eyes still on her. He stops by the door, gathering every bit of confidence he can possibly find "There's no girl by the way,"

He bursts through the door mid afternoon, three days later, with panicked eyes "I am so sorry," He states

"What are you talking about?" She questions, dropping her pencil to the counter but before he has a chance to explain the door swings open.

Sirius saunters in, Peter close behind laughing followed by a smirking James

"That, I am so sorry," Remus grimaces making her giggle

"Well, well, well," Sirius speaks dramatically "Moony dearest, when you told us that you'd become a regular at a coffee shop and that's why you kept being given freebies you failed to mention why I think,"

"She makes a great cup of tea," Remus protests, watching as she under his friends intense gaze

"You fancy her," James grins, approaching the counter "You made that cappuccino the other day?" He asks politely

"I did,"

"Can you please make another, it was the best coffee I've ever drank. I am not being dramatic, I dreamed about this coffee,"

"Sure," She nods, "Takeaway or staying in?"

"We will take-" Remus begins

"Ah,ah,ah, We are staying right here," Sirius interrupts Remus

"Fucking hell, you've seen her you can stop torturing me now,"

"It's not torture it's investigating," Sirius argues, turning to her "Can I get a black coffee, two sugars please?"

"Sure," She nods, he flashes her a grin and thanks her as Peter orders a hot chocolate before the three boys saunter away.

"I'm sorry," Remus mutters, leaning on the counter as she begins to prepare the four drinks

"It's alright. They're funny,"

"I mentioned you before but I slipped up and mentioned that you made the cappuccino, casually y'know? Then Sirius went feral, searched through the bin for the bag with the cakes in from last night. Pete's been in before and suddenly we are outside,"

"You talk about me?" She questions, teasing smirk on her face

"Yeah. Yeah, I do," He admits with a blush. "That's kinda why they freaked so much, talk about you a lot,"

"You're sweet Remus, y'know that?" she grins, he blushes following behind her as she takes the mugs to the table or rowdy boys.

James practically pulls her arm out of the socket demanding she sit with them until she was busy and so she does, talking and laughing with them was surprisingly easy. Sirius takes a liking to her when she does a pretty spot on impression of professor slughorn and James thinks she's very funny and easily passes his protective interrogation. Remus can't help the warmth in his chest, seeing her so easily get on with the most important people in his life.

They allow Remus a private goodbye when they're done, waiting outside for him.

"I'll see you later," He smiles

"Yeah," She nods, as he helps her place all the boys mugs and saucers on the counter. "Remus?" She calls as he reaches the door, he turns to look at her

"For the record, if my friends knew where to find you they'd be the same. I talk about you a lot too,"

Because oh because I've fallen quite hard over you

She's standing on the edge of the toilet seat, irrational fear flooding her mind. She wasn't really sure what the plan was, perhaps to live out the rest of her days here, in the edge of the toilet, let the spider have her coffee shop. She's almost content with her plan until she hears the jingle of the door bell, with one glance at the watch on her wrist she knows who it is

"Rem? I'm in the bathroom? I need you to come save me?" She shouts the question out, hearing a laugh that sounds off before the door swings open. She's shocked to see James Potter, smirking at the sight and entirely not Remus Lupin.

"You aren't Remus,"

"Good observation," He smirks, eyeing her situation "You gonna come down?"

"There's a spider," She announces, indicating to the ghastly hairy not that big spider

"You need me to kill it for you?" James questions, slightly bemused.

"No! Don't kill it, it's family will smell it's blood and come looking for it," She panics, James barks out a laugh but retreats into the cafe, returning with a mug and napkin and with ease he catches the animal, letting it out of the window.

"You gonna get down now?" He questions, offering her a hand she gladly accepts as she steps of the toilet seat.

"Did you need something?" She questions, attention back on the lack of the tall sweater adorned boy she was pretty much in love with

"Remus can't walk you home, he's sick, so he sent me,"  James explains

"Oh, is he okay? I could make him soup or-"

"He'll be alright, shit immune system on him," James shrugs

"You didn't have to come walk me home," She speaks, beginning to wipe down the surfaces, forgetting how long it took without Remus helping her

"He threatened me pretty good," James shrugs, sitting down on the stool at the bar. "He really cares about you," James tags on, watching her as she blushes

"I care about him too," She informs, looking at James quickly "He's the best thing in my life right now,"

"He's the best guy on the planet," James comments, watching her lock the windows "You certainly seem to care about him,"

"I do," She reassures, opening the door as James exits into the street that glows under the full moon

She hasn't seen Remus in three days, James has walked her home twice and Sirius the other time. She liked them, but she missed Remus. Missed the way she got butterflies in her stomach when he looked at her. Missed the way he smiles, a wide grin that makes his eyes shine. Missed the little spark of energy she felt when his fingers would bump into hers while they walk to her apartment.

She's tidying when the door swings open, not many customers in the store. She hadn't really noticed the door, well she was aware it opened, was putting her spray and cloth down to turn and greet the customer, but she hadn't noticed it was him.

Remus had been outside for three minutes, watching her through the window. Every bit of nerve his pep talk with the boys had given him and dissipated on his half walk half sprint back to the coffee shop. He'd seen her through the window and stalled, unable to push himself to walk through the door and face her, not when she looked so beautiful it made his heart practically scream. It was when she laughs, something a regular has said, head tilting back and nose scrunching that he realises he'd regret not just doing it that he storms in.

She spins around at the feeling of someone behind her

"Remmy! You're-" Her excited shout is cut off almost immediately.

Remus kisses her, it's soft and gentle and apprehensive. His hands cupping her cheeks to hold her face in place and god she can almost taste his nerves. It speeds up though, when he feels her kiss back. Arms looping around his neck and hands finding their home in his hair. It's faster now, full of everything they'd wanted to say for the past month since he'd first wondered into the coffee shop.

"You're back, are you feeling okay?" She questions panicked, the second their lips are apart, his hands still hold her face, forehead resting on hers.

"I like you. I mean to say I am completely drawn to you and feel like I can't breathe when you're not there and I have wanted you near me every second since I met you and I got the nerve to say it and I was scared if I didn't come and say it right now I'd loose the nerve," He rambles, nerves floating away as he watches her beam up at him

"I like you too Rem, I thought it was obvious," She admits, pressing another peck to his lips

"Okay, I'll um, I'll let you get back to work I just- I'll see you later?" He questions, blushing red but grinning as he backs towards the door

"Yeah, I'll see you then Rem," She smiles, watching as he nods, more to himself than her, backing out the door with the widest smile to ever grace his features.

Remus eyes blink open, taken aback at first by the change in pace. He feels rested, he couldn't remember the last time he felt like that. The bed he's nestled in is warm and comfortable, the cushions feeling light as air, he think for a second as he inhales the smell of coffee beans and caramel cupcakes, that he's still dreaming, but looking around the room he realises, as a smile falls to his face, that he's woken up in her bed.

He rolls over, not seeing her he lets out a breath, worried for a second until he hears the soft music playing from the kitchen. He was normally one to bask in the comfort of a bed for a few minutes before he gets up but the thought of her consumes his mind and she was the most comforting thing on the planet.

He pads into the kitchen, his joggers handing low on his hips and his heart melts at the sight waiting for him. She's dressed in the jumper he'd been wearing the night before and a pair of baggy jeans, the music is playing from a record and she's twirling around as she returns milk to the fridge

"Morning," She beams, crossing the kitchen to press a peck to his cheek. He grins, grabbing her hand while she's close enough and twirling her around, her giggle filling the air until he's pulled her into his chest.  She silences, though her smile doesn't falter, now she's pressed against his chest.

"Morning darling," He smiles, pressing his lips to hers gently. She smiles against him, the feeling of home and comfort not escaping her as she pulls aways, pressing one last hasty peck to his lips when they chase hers.

"I gotta go open the shop," She mumbles against his chest that has pulled her into a hug, in response to his whine.

"No,"

"Yes or Sue will kill me. We can hang out tonight,"

"Go for dinner?"

"Sure," She agrees, pecking his lips one last time before breezing out of the apartment.

He turns to make breakfast only to see a mug of tea, made perfectly to his preference and white toast with butter and strawberry jam. The domesticity of life with her warms him in a way nothing else ever had.

Remus realises, in that moment, it had nothing to do with the warm, comforting coffee shop. He'd fallen in love with her.

"Bartender, my good friend! I'll have my usual and a plate of your finest chips, if you would be so kind"

It was closing time when Harry, the local musician, sat in front of you, elbows on the bar you were wiping down while humming to Patti Smith's "Gloria".

You raised an eyebrow at him, but the willowy man could see the slight tremble at the corner of your lips, a tell that you were suppressing a smile.

"I'm afraid the kitchen is closed, mister Styles. Sam left an hour ago."

"Yes yes, but I have it from a very good source he left you a big pile of leftover chips before he did," He accused, "you know, as he does every night..."

You frowned in confusion,

"I thought you hated cold fries. That you found them to be, and I quote, soggy and disgusting" 

"I guess you can say I acquired a taste for them" He shrugged, mischievous green eyes sparkling, "Just like you did for this lowlife songwriter in front of you and the heartfelt conversations you share with him" 

"Did you now?" There was an edge of scepticism in your voice, but you were already disappearing inside the kitchen. 

Harry's heart did a little jump as you didn't immediately deny liking him.

"Hey, Joe" he called out, "why don't you go home? I'll help Y/N close when we're done…" 

There was a deaf noise as a young waiter, the only person left in the bar beside the two of you, set the last chair on top of a table. 

"You sure?"

"Yeah, I got this" he reassured him, "did it dozens of times. Go home to your girl"

"Thanks, mate!" The second brit practically skipped on his way to the backroom, but turned around just before reaching the door. "Listen, you know I like you, but if you hurt y/n in any way…"

Harry smiled, genuinely. He could never get mad at anyone that protective of you.

"You know where I live. Pick my sister on the way, though. I think she would like to join you."

Joe rolled his baby blues,

"I know you're not a creep. I meant her heart"

"Yeah, me too…"

Whatever your friend saw inside Harry's eyes was enough to convince him. He nodded and left, as the musician got up to lock the front door and turn the "open" sign off. 

If you noticed Joe's absence at your return, you didn't comment on it, simply setting the giant pile of chips and two cans of cherry cola you were carrying, down in front of Harry, who had returned to his seat. 

"Ah, you always have the good stuff!" the sigh that left his lips as he took the first sip of the soda was not unlike the one any of your regulars made after the first taste of something strong after a hard day. 

"Rough night?" 

"Kind of. Good show though, so at least I have that going on for me…" 

"It really was, I'm actually impressed" You had to confess, "And surprised too, it was a bold choice going acoustic on a night like this, with such a big audience," So many people had gathered to see the show that the bouncer had to start rejecting people so you wouldn't have trouble with the fire department "but it definitely worked" 

There was a slight blush on the singer's cheeks when he replied, far more humble than you were used to,

"Well, you know, Valentine's day and all that. The band, all have boyfriends and girls they wanted to spend the evening with…"

You tilted your head,

"And you didn't?" It was hard to believe, when almost every night he played there you would see him leave with a different, always sculptural, painfully perfect girl. Or man. 

Harry didn't reply, choosing instead to stuff his face with stale fries.

"Alright then" You raised your shoulder in surrender, "keep your secrets…"

He squinted in disbelief,

"Did you just quoted The Lord of the Rings at me?"

"Did you just recognize my Lord of the rings quote?" You countered.

"You are such a nerd!"

"Look who's talking, chicken little!" You gestured at his powder blue sweater with a yellow baby chick at the front and herringbone pants. 

"Oi!" His manchester accent popped out, like it always did whenever he lost his cool "I'll have you know, this is Gucci"

You scoffed,

"That doesn't make it any better, it just means that you spent a shit load of money to look like my third grade teacher, mister Harrington!" 

"Ok, first of all," he countered, "your teacher sounds awesome and second-"

An inelegant snort escaped your mouth. Harry's emerald eyes pinned you down. 

"Second of all, you're no one to talk either, kitten hoodie" 

You could feel the heat creeping up your cheeks. Praying he couldn't see your blush in the dim light, you took a mouthful of soda to cool you down. 

For a moment, none of you said anything, the sweet notes of Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams" the only thing filling the silence.

"Listen, y/n-"

"If I'm being honest-" 

He chuckled,

"I'm sorry, ladies first" 

"Now I'm not sure if I wanna tell you…"

"Come on" A grown ass man pouting should not be that cute, "I want to know"

You feigned a long suffering sigh,

"Fine, if you must know- If you must know, I actually like your new style. It's way better than that... rock and roll cliche... thing you had going on when we first met" You gestured vaguely in the direction of his body, "You know, the long hair, black clothes, doc boots…" 

He flinched, 

"Ugh, Don't remind me. I was trying too hard back then. And not only with my clothes, with my music too"

"Oh, yeah, I remember. All you used to sing about was" You chose your words carefully, "frisky girls and being horny…" 

"Well, to be fair, I still sing about being horny"

"Yeah, but now you're…"

You trailed off, unsure of how you could explain the difference, the change in your feelings towards his music, without explaining the change in your feelings towards the man that made it.

However, Harry would not let it go that easy. He was used to you being sharp, opinionated, guarded. Now there was a crack on that armour, and he wanted to see what was underneath it. 

You hadn't even realized how close you had leaned into each other until his hot breath fanned over your face.

"Now I'm what, y/n?"

More real. More mature. More emotional, as if he had finally found the link, made the connection between sex and love. 

"More open"

Harry smiled,

"Open. Yeah, I like that…"

So close. He was so close now, his malaquite eyes were out of focus. So close you could feel his magnetic field, the gravity of his atoms pulling in yours.

"Harry…" 

Never in his twenty seven years of life and over ten as a musician, had he heard a more beautiful sound than his name, breathlessly falling from your lips.

"Yes?" He murmured, lips ghosting over your soft, perfect ones.

"No"

"No?"

"No" You repeated, more firmly, taking a step back, putting as much space between the two of you as possible, "I know what this is"

"And what is this, y/n" To your surprise, he didn't sound mad, or demanding. He sounded confused and sad. Dissapointed but unsurprised, as if he had expected it to go south or… never had dared expect it would actually happen at all. 

"A bad idea" You explained, "with guys like you, is always the same: You have beautiful women throwing themselves at you every night. And you take them home with you cause why wouldn't you? You are young, and free and hot. There is nothing wrong with taking what's being offered" 

"Y/n-"

"I'm not saying it's your fault" You went on, ignoring him, "And I'm not saying you don't fall in love, sometimes. But that's the exception, not the rule, and I… I'm the kind of girl that's the rule. Not the exception"

Harry had always thought the worst that could happen to him was losing your friendship. Finally making a move, a real move, and getting rejected by you. He thought that was the definitive pain, the one that would obliterate him, if things were not to work out. And he was almost certain they would not work out. 

But sitting there, in front of you, separated by a wooden bar that might as well have been the great wall of china as you stood there, arms around yourself, small and defenseless as you explained to him all the reasons why you wouldn't allow yourself to love him… that was way worse. 

"What if you already were my exception?" He blurted out, before he could stop himself, "What if I was in love with you?"

You laughed, bitterly.

"Harry, I'm not even your type. I've seen you leave night after night with models and socialites and actors, each one more surreally stunning than the last one…" You didn't have a bad self esteem, you didn't. You considered yourself attractive, but the people Harry usually went for were on a whole different level.

"Yes, but that's only because the most absolutely perfect woman in the world for me, keeps me at arm's length!" He rubbed his face in frustration, "And it's so maddening, so fucked up, the way I can't even get away from her long enough to get over her, because even the pain of seeing her every night knowing I can't touch what I see, that I will never have her, is better than the pain of being away from her. 

So I keep on taking home the hottest people I can find hoping they will keep me distracted long enough to fill the hours until I can see her again… until I can-"

"What the hell are you talking about?" Never, in all the time you had known each other, had Harry given you a single signal indicating he had any kind of feelings for you. Your relationship had always consisted of friendly banter and quip battles. Sure, you could get flirty sometimes, but you were a bartender, flirting was pretty much your customer service voice, and he was a musician, he would flirt with his own shadow if he could.

Harry opened his mouth to explain, but a familiar melody started coming from the still working speakers.

"Hey, this is my song!" You didn't quite understand why he seemed so marveled, "You never added any of my songs to your playlist before!"

Oh. Oh.

"Yeah, well" Harry could now clearly see your darkened cheeks as you stumbled over your words, "I guessed I never liked one of your songs so much before" 

This time, he was the one blushing and avoiding your eyes.

"What would you say if I told you-... If I told you I wrote this one for you?"

"I'd say you're full of shit" You scoffed, "Didn't you tell me you only ever wrote about girls you had dated?"

"No," he corrected, "I said I only ever wrote about women that had broken my heart…"

"How did I break your heart?"

Harry sighed. Your walls were back up, higher than ever, and he didn't know how to break through them. It wasn't your fault -and had it been your fault, truth was he could never blame you either, there was something about you that made it physically impossible for him to get mad at you- you spoke from experience, he didn't need to unlock the secrets of your past, didn't need the details. It was obvious you had been burned before, and though he hated it, hated them for whatever they had done to you, he couldn't fault you for trying to protect yourself.

Not when he wanted to protect you too. 

"You didn't like me, back when we first met"

"Harry-"

"No, it's ok. You didn't like me, and you were right not to like me. I know you probably didn't realize it but, that first time you rejected me, when I flirted with you that very first night and you rolled your eyes at me… you changed my life"

"What? How??"

"You weren't wrong, I was a cliche. And I was trying way too hard, to be cool, act like a rockstar… but you took a look at that guy, at that though, playboy, sex, drugs and rock 'n roll guy… and you hated him" Harry snickered. You didn't understand what about all that was so funny, "I had created that guy so that everyone would like him, and you hated him. And the funny thing is-" He finally met your eye. No, he caught your eye and imprisoned them, "The funny thing is, you hating me for what I wasn't, somehow allowed me to start being myself a little bit more, because if you already disliked me… then I had nothing to lose" 

You didn't quite know what to say to that.

His bright green eyes were unable to face yours, choosing instead to focus on the palms he was picking at,

"Is that why you… uhm…" You pointed at his sweater.

"Yup" He admitted, "I showed up here one day, on laundry day, in one of my old nerdy sweater vests and you smiled, when you saw it"

"I remember that!" You chuckled, "It was the brown striped one, it almost looked like a crop top, cause it obviously didn't fit anymore"

Harry nodded,

"I may have had a couple grow spurts since I got that in high school" 

"Ok, but, you made it work somehow…" 

"Thank you. The point is…" he turned serious again, his deep, rich voice even more hypnotic than usual. Or maybe it was just you, for the first time allowing yourself to enjoy it without reservations. "The point is, you didn't like cool Harry, but you liked the real me. Even if just a little bit, and that meant the world to me. I… I adored you because of it. So I wrote a song for you, cause even if I couldn't say it to your face, I had to get it out. Just like I had to get this out tonight"

He opened his arms wide, in his typical ta-da gesture, sad, resigned smile on his face, before getting up from his stool, grabbing his jacket and guitar case.

"You don't have to say anything, I don't expect you to love me back" He declared, "I just- I thought I'd let you know. Valentine's day and all that."

He turned to leave, his own voice still signing in the background,

Nadia Nikolina Chirilă was born in Romania, being the younger sister to Decebal and Alexander, the three of them being triplets by birth. She was the younger daughter to Apostol Chirilă, and her mother, Maria Stratulat of Moldovic heritage. She was born 12 minutes after Alexander, and because the parents couldn't support all three children, they passed Alexander and Nadia to an orphanage only to be sold over the country boundaries for human trafficking.

Before Alexander could be bought for organ trafficking in America, an old lady took him in, leaving Nadia all alone, only to be taken by an Italian Mafia Leader, Romero Gonzales because of her unique eyes, raising her until the age of 10, when she was forced to work into the prostitution by her father figure, losing her virginity at that fragile age and abused both mentally and sexually by countless men; being caged like an animal and labeled as nothing more than an object.

By the age of 15, a customer came in a Chinese man, who pitied Nadia and helped her escape. The said man took her to America, Ohio where he was living with his American wife who couldn't have children; the man being a former assassin from China.

Nadia observed how in his free time her new father figure practiced martial arts and asked him to train her, finding out more about what he did in his past, she simply asked him to teach her how to kill. Until the age of 27, she spent her time in America, Ohio with her adoptive parents, learning, and training, until they passed away.

Not seeing any reason to stay there, Nadia flew to a more secluded place in Greenland, starting a job as an independent artist in painting and the art of origami which her Chinese adoptive father taught her, and also taking jobs as a hitwoman. She also has a cabin for vacations in Scottland where she sometimes stays.

Despite being a ruthless killer, she mostly kills men, being a meister into weaponry, her preferable killing method is piercing under the chin of her victims with the sickle blade of her kusarigama or simply smashing the throats with her mace bludgeon. Despite being a woman she possesses strength that can match that of men, killing men that abuse women.

Personality:

Nadia is the type of woman that is the epitome of a male into a female's body. She sports a hardcore personality that screams 'she is not one to be messed it'. The type of woman that plays with big boys like they are nothing but kids.

She is a manly woman with a spirit of a warrior, giving off big sister vibes, despite being the younger Chirila sibling. In her day-to-day life, she is a hard-working woman who isn't afraid to get dirty or bruised, always open to competing against men who underestimate her and prove them wrong.

There’s only so much a job description can prepare one for.  For instance: making burgers, serving customers, taking orders, so on and so forth.  That’s what this minimum wage job suggested she would be doing.  But it didn’t come with the fine print.  It didn’t tell her that she’d be making burgers, sandwiches, chicken nuggets, fries, so on and so forth under pressure as customers ranged from dead-inside but patient patrons to Karen levels of impatient and entitled.  There’s caveats, little sidebars, unmentioned stressors that go overlooked because her job is solely to serve the people shitty, shitty burgers.

And it barely even helps her pay rent.  The things she’s seen on the job only serves to make her wonder how long it’ll take for her to become either bitter and jaded or completely desensitized by the bullshit this hellish existence can throw at her.  Maybe it’ll be a mix of both.

The door opens and swings shut with a heavy, muted thud.  Cashier Girl looks up, already exhausted two hours into her shift as she catches sight of the next batch of cus-

Oh.  Oh no.  Oh no, they look like trouble.

A tall, bubbly young lady in a figure hugging dress smiles sweetly in that, “I’m going to try really hard not to create problems on purpose for you”, sort of way, which happens to be Cashier Girl’s favorite kind of customer.  Granted, this girl looks nothing like trouble.  She looks like the exact opposite of trouble.  But the two men she has in tow makes Cashier Girl think twice about lowering her guard around the pretty girl.  

Standing next to her is some dude with cyan-colored hair, a red cap turned backwards in a very dudebro kind of way.  He dresses sloppily, like he just rolled out of bed and threw on whatever happened to be in reach, which also just so happened to be the same clothes he wore the day before.  His clearly white shirt is stained with something… she hopes is nothing but the results of him being a messy eater.  Or maybe he got into a knife fight and won?  That has to be the answer for the mysterious, rusty stains and splatters on the right side of his shirt.  

However, the one who really sets off her anxiety radar is the taller young man standing next to the cyan shortie.  The guy is covered in blood.  Not only that, but she’s pretty sure he’s toting at least two guns on his person.  And to top it off, he’s wearing a sweater vest and a turtleneck in this kind of weather!  Granted, it is a bit chilly, but that level of layering just feels like overkill.  He glowers with his arms folded over his chest, clearly hating everything about this experience.  Is that dried blood on his face?  That is absolutely dried blood all over his face.

Cashier Girl sucks in a deep breath through her teeth and puts on a well practiced smile.  “Hello!  May I take your order?”

“Yes please!  Um,” the lady in red nudges the shorter man with a smile, “what were we going to order again?”

“Beep!”

...Beep?

“Oh!  Right!  Can we get the 2 for $5 deal?”

She could understand all of that from a single beep?!  “Of course!  And what would you like?”

“Badoop.”  The cyan-haired man nudges the blood covered ginger, and boy, did it look like Little Boy Blue was poking a stick at an angry bear.  “Skdeep!”

Having been in the industry for a long, two years has given Cashier Girl the ability to see when someone is about to take a dive into the deep end fairly quickly.  The ginger twitches an eye, lips pulled into a snarl as he breathes out a little too deeply.  Not quite like a sigh, but like a bull about to charge headfirst into a china shop on purpose.  He sucks in a harsh breath through gritted teeth and hunches his shoulders up.  Oh wow, he’s really restraining himself.

“Just get me…”  And of course Probably a Murderer understood everything Little Boy Blue said.  “The nugs and burg.” 

With the way he’s restraining himself, she wants to believe that he once worked in the same industry as her.  No wonder he’s a murderer.  Good for him, good for him.  Doing what the rest of them can’t do.  

“Alright!  And is there anything else I can get for you?”

“Hmm.”   Pretty Miss Sunshine looks over to Little Boy Blue who shakes his head before turning back to face Cashier Girl.  “I think that’s it!”

“Alright, your total comes to $5.40.”  

“Beep!”  Little Boy Blue pipes up excitedly and starts digging around in, what she assumes is, his back pocket.  The short man pulls out a crumpled, moist-looking five dollar bill.  He straightens it out, and Cashier Girl swears that a good quarter of the bill is stained with blood.  Probably a Murderer must have noticed the blood too, because he suddenly stiffens and glares at Little Boy Blue.

“...Boyfriend.”  Oh shit, are they dating?  Is Miss Sunshine just a lady friend of theirs?  “Isn’t that the fuckin’ money I lent to you a couple weeks back?”

Oh damn.  Cashier Girl looks between Blue and Murderer, Blue either oblivious to Murderer’s growing rage or too wildly confident that the bloodstained ginger won’t actually hurt him.   As interesting as the tension may be, she still needs the forty cents to complete their order.

“Sir-”

“Ba beep!”  Boy Blue nods vigorously, but she knows it’s not towards her.  Murderer lets out a long, aggrieved sigh as he massages his temples.

“So.  You’re tellin’ me.”  He points to the money on the counter and back at Boy Blue.  “You spent… how long at my apartment?  Botherin’ me for some extra cash for food, refusin’ to leave for a good few hours, and then completely forgettin’ about gettin' the fuckin’ food you were supposed to get?  After I gave you the goddamn money?”

“Oh, I remember that day!”  Pretty Miss Sunshine speaks up a little too cheerily given the mood.  “We were supposed to get some Chinese takeout, so Boyfriend disappeared for a bit to ask you for some extra money since he was short some.”  Wait, are they all dating each other?  What the hell?  “But Boyfriend came back looking all happy and without any food, and when I asked where the food was, he said he totally forgot!  We ended up just using Daddy’s credit card since I remembered I still had it, so we still got food in the end.”  Miss Sunshine beams brightly at the flabbergasted Murderer.  “You don’t need to worry about that!”

“That’s not what I was pissed about!”  For a yell worthy statement, Murderer does an awfully good job at keeping his voice reasonably leveled in this shitty fast food restaurant.  “And you had a credit card this entire time?!  Why do you fucks keep comin’ over to my place to ask for cash?!”  

“Ohhh, well, Daddy took it back after he found out I still had it.  But now I’m borrowing from Mommy instead-”

“Oh, so you just have another credit card you could be usin’ instead of my money-”

“Excuse me,” Cashier Girl says as politely as possible, seeing how Murderer’s hand is twitching over one of his guns, “but you still haven’t paid the full amount.”

“Boop!”  Boy Blue quickly begins to dig through his pockets, his confident smirk slowly morphing into a stricken grimace as his movements grow more frantic.  “Sk-skido, bap de doop-”

“Do not fuckin’ tell me you do not have forty fuckin’ cents.”

Ohhhh shit.  Cashier Girl feels torn between wanting to see Murderer fucking snap because man, they really are just running his patience into the GROUND, and wanting her goddamn forty cents so that she can move on with these customers.  Murderer’s face turns a bright shade of red as he inhales a deep breath through his nostrils and breathes out heavily through gritted teeth once more, the process repeating a few times before he reaches for his back pocket and pulls out a ratty wallet that’s literally being held together with duct tape.  Quietly, they all watch as he shakes some coins out and carefully counts out forty cents exactly.

“There,” he says softly in that tone she recognizes from parents who are this close to losing their absolute shit towards their children, “five fucking dollars and forty cents.”

Cashier Girl looks up and sees Miss Sunshine finally starting to sweat just a bit.  Still, she keeps up her cheerful demeanor as she addresses Cashier Girl.  “I think we’re good now, right?”

“Uh, yes!”  She takes the money and tries to get a read on Murderer to see if this shift will be her last one, but he’s got his arms crossed as he stares directly ahead.  The stony expression can only spell doom for the two standing next to him.  “Your number is 69,” haha nice, “and your order will be out shortly!”

“Babeep!  Pi-!”  Blue probably tries to make the same comment that Cashier Girl internally made to Murderer, but he’s quickly shut down by the dark glare Murderer shoots down.  He quickly laughs nervously and clears his throat, rubbing his arm as he looks away sheepishly.  “H-hm…  bop.”  Blue takes the receipt and nods his thanks, going over to stand by one of the dividers with Miss Sunshine in tow.  Murderer, however, remains where he stands, now making uncomfortable eye-contact with her.  Anger still rolls off of him in waves, but she’s starting to wonder if being angry is just his default.

“Oi,” he begins, and she quickly glances behind him to see if there are any other customers behind him.  None.  She’s not sure if she’s disappointed or a bit glad that there’s no one standing behind him.  “Honest opinion - you think this joint is a good enough reward for savin’ their asses?”

Oh boy.  Cashier Girl has no idea what he means by “savin’ their asses”, but if he means it literally then…  She sucks in a breath through her teeth and tries not to grimace.  He grunts in response and squeezes his eyes shut with a humorless chuckle.  “Yeah, thought so.  Really shouldn’t have taken them at their word when they said, ‘their treat’.  Ain’t nothin’ been their treat so far.”

Oof.  That’s right.  That five was originally his that Boy Blue was supposed to pay back, and the forty cents were definitely his.  The guy basically treated himself by force.  They both share a silent look before he sighs heavily.  As much as she’d kind of like to hear more of this dude’s story and why he’s even friends (datemates?  They did call Little Boy Blue, “Boyfriend”, after all) with them, she still has a job to do, and chatting with customers for longer than a certain, nondescript time could get her in trouble.  However, much to her relief, the ginger takes the initiative wordlessly and wanders back to the pair, sulking in his blood soaked clothes.  

Despite clearly looking like a group of troublemakers (especially Murderer), the three keep to themselves, Blue and Sunshine chatting amongst themselves and nudging Murderer every once in a while in some dangerous gambit to get his attention.  Each time they do that, he grips his arms tightly, before stiffly looking over to them as they jabber on about something Cashier Girl can’t hear.  All he does is nod and look away, intent on focusing on some spot on the wall and practice what she assumes is deep breathing exercises.  For a dude covered in blood, he’s doing a real good job at showing restraint.
