Stage monitoring

To create a musical performance, two things have to happen: your audience needs to hear you, and you need to hear yourself. If you won't hear yourself clearly, how would you know that you singing good and clear?

Stage monitors are the speakers placed on the stage that performers use to hear themselves and the rest of their band. It’s usually placed within and pointed at the performance area so that the performer will be able to hear critical elements for performance. Perhaps the most common is the stage wedge, which gets its name from its shape. Stage wedges tend to sit on the floor and the speaker itself is then set at an angle pointing up toward the performers on stage (some are designed with a 30 degree angle, for instance). Some bands prefer to have a separate stage wedge for each member.

There is two types of types of stage monitors: active and passive. You would ask what is the difference, so let me explain!

Active speakers use amplifier (amplifier is the device that turns the low voltage signals from your equipment into a signal with enough gain to be used to power a pair of speakers) built into the speaker enclosure and do not require an external power amplifier. They usually have connectors for balanced cables which makes it easy, as well. 

Passive speakers need to use  external power amplifier to pass signal. They also require a balanced cable to connect the mixer to the power amp. To set up a passive monitor, you need connect the outputs of the mixer to the inputs on the amplifier. Then, you connect the outputs of the amp to the monitor’s inputs. While the inputs on a power amp receive a balanced signal, the amp’s outputs send an unbalanced signal.

Besides stage monitors we also have studio monitors.

Studio monitor speakers are essentially designed to reveal a true picture of the audio you're creating. You might not love this warts and all approach, but this uncoloured picture of your mix means you can make informed choices about what might need changing, confident that what you’re hearing in your studio will translate to the methods of playback described above and beyond.

Besides stage and studio monitors performers and bands need to use in-ear monitors.But what is in-ear monitors you may ask?

In-ear monitors allow you to use a mix so that it can be heard directly by the musician. The system is composed of a transmitter that transmits a mix to a wireless receiver to which the earphones are connected.

Pros of in-ear monitors:

less noice on stage

No monitors bleed on the microphones.

No feedback loop

The health benefits

But even they have cons:

Set up

It’s very important to place microphones and stage monitors correctly in order to avoid feedback loop. So, if  a microphone on stage  pickups a stage monitor it’s being sent to, a feedback loop (ringing tone) will occur. You need to remember to keep the wrapped cable near the speaker in case you need to adjust its position, and make sure microphones and speakers aren’t pointed directly at each other.

You can also find front of house loudspeakers on the stage.

The front of house speakers are the main speakers that cover the audience, and the front of house desk is the desk that generates the front of house audio mix.

On stage we can also use side fills. So why do we need side fills?

We need side fills  to provide the performers a more enveloping and well-balanced sound. This allows all performers to hear a good mix of the whole band, while still allowing for individual mixes to be provided for individuals at their position on the stage via wedge monitors.
