The Current Life and Times of Doug "Cypher" Ramsey
@flo-nelja asked me if I'd been keeping up with the adventures of Doug Ramsey since the start of House of X so thi nis my attempt to do so.
In case of spoilers I'll put it under a cut
Okay, so at the start of House of X/Powers of X Doug was invited, by Xavier, to establish peaceful relations with the living island of Krakoa, since he was the only one able to speak to it in it's own language. Even Xavier's telepathy was only getting vague emotional senations from the island (which identifies as a he), whereas Doug found he communicate with him perfectly and he had a LOT to say!
As part of Xaviers plan, Doug created the "mutant Esperanto" language known as "Krakoan" (Which is not the language the island speaks, that's a sort of base-Krakoan which only Doug can speak) which every mutant is telepathically taught on arriving on Krakoa for the first time, so everyone can speak to each other no matter where they are from.
Doug then quietly helped set up a LOT of the infrastructure of the Krakoan nation. It was his idea to suggest to Krakoa that he could perhaps grow buildings and habitats for the incoming mutant population, but it was Krakoa who decided he was happy to do since the more mutants on the island the more life energy he could use to grow himself. (it's a tiny iota of "life energy" per inhabitant, so Krakoa doesn't drain people to death any more, he has more than he needs and is happy to turn that extra energy to grow and expand and help his inhabitants.
Doug arranged, via some really gross and icky requests from Beast, for Krakoa to create the various miracle cures which form much of the Krakoan economy.
(Doug also noted that Charles, Erik, Beast and co tended to overlook Krakoa's part of these contributions unless reminded, so made sure he DID remind them.)
He also developed the OS for the plant-tech based computer systems on Krakoa.
So our boy was pivotal to the whole experiment.
He is now officially the Speaker for Krakoa on the Quiet Council. He doesn't get a vote, but translates any points Krakoa wishes to make clear to his guests, and pointing out issues which directly impact Krakoa as an entity (So was quick to reject Sebastian Shaw's aspirations of property ownership on Krakoa as Krakoa is a sentient entity, not just acreage), and Krakoa has the power of ultimate veto on what goes on on his landmass. So Doug is well known and respected on the island for that.
Then an event called "X of Swords" happened, a massive battle on Otherworld to try and win back Krakoa's twin, another sentient island called Arakko which had been lost in Otherworld for millenia. The mutant residents of Arakko have spent centuries perfecting themselves as weapons for their endless wars and challenges, and see everything in the form of a battle.
Ten swordbearers were chosen from each island by apparently mystical means, to represent their people's. To everyone's surprise (including his own) Doug was one of the one's chosen for Krakoa
Whilst the nature of his technorganic arm, and what had happened to Warlock was unclear to most, and the narrative had gone to great lengths not to explain, Warlock was still present as a sentient entity and was choosing to be part of Doug's arm, and so became his sword for this storyline.
As it turned out the battles were mostly NOT swordfights, but a series of random and quixotically entertaining challenges set up by Otherworld's leader Saturnyne. These included a foot race, a fashion shows, an eating contests and a dance off (Doug did well in that one, but a sulking Wolverine brought the score down).
One challenge was that Doug found himself in was being married to one of the Arraki sword bearers, Bei the Blood Moon. She is a fearsome warrior, respected/feared by all, and probably about 9 feet tall. She has the unsual trait that she doesn't speak (she has a sortof Black Bolt like sonic blast) and the odd telepathic means she uses to communicate works for everyone EXCEPT Doug, so she is the one person everyone can understand, but Cypher can't. He found this both intriguing, and the fact she was, when she took her armour off, stunningly attractive sold him on the marriage idea. Bei seemed to be prepared to do it because she wouldn't back down from anything (And also found him oddly adorable... who can blame her for that) and so they went ahead with it.
Doug was especially relieved as it meant he didn't need to fight her to the death because he has no illusions about his skills.
Saturnyne admitted she hadn't thought they would both go through with it, and awarded them a point each.
At the end of the story we find that they are genuinely besotted with each other and have stayed together… as a sort of in-joke she is nearly always referred to as "Doug's large wife" and they have their own place on Krakoa. He finds her endlessly fascinating and wonderful (and a little scary), and she finds herself protective of her small, soft non-combatitive husband but appreciates his kindness and capacity to care about others (Which was a rare trait on Arakko)
We recently found out there was more going on with Doug than we'd known. From the outset of the Krakoa experiment, he and Warlock (who is fine, and had been hiding in Doug's arm as an ongoing backup in case of trouble) had never trusted Xavier. They knew he meant well with the idea of Krakoa, and they agreed with admirable core idea, but they knew from too many experiences over the years that Chuck (and/or Erik) would find a way to mess it up with his control freak tendencies and conviction that his decisions were always right, even when they weren't.
So they put plans in motion, agreeing with Krakoa to allow Warlock to consume some of Krakoa's root system so Warlock could be wired into everywhere on the island in away no one else would be aware of and they could keep tabs on things.
And of course, they did go wrong, as Charles and Erik had seen fit to over-rule Moira on certain things she had absolutely said they could not over-rule her on, and it all got messy from that point on. Suffice it to say, he faced down a pissed off Mystique and Destiny and won (or at least ended on a stalemate), though less because of any arguments he might make and more because his selfsoulfriend is still with him, Krakoa takes anything which might cause harm to his favourite squishy mutant VERY seriously and Bei the Blood Moon both loves him and is quite prepared to literally destroy anyone who tries to hurt him.
And that's pretty much where we are at the moment... well, there are a few other bits here and there but they'd require another fourteen paragraphs and even i have my limits.

Am I the only one slightly confused by X OF SWORDS: STASIS? The whole thing is set up as a competition, ten champions from Krakoa and ten champions from Arakko, but unless I am seriously blind, Krakoa only has nine champions.
Tumblr media
For Arakko we have...
Annihilation/Genesis
War
Death
Summoner
Redroot the Forest
Solem
Bei the Blood Moon
The White Sword
Pogg Ur-Pogg
Isca the Unbeaten
And then, for Krakoa we have...
Apocalypse
Gorgon
Betsy Braddock
Brian Braddock
Wolverine
Storm
Cypher
Magik
Cable
What's the deal? Does Gorgon count as two because he's weilding both Godkiller and Grasscutter? Is he going to have to fight two champions from the opposing side at once? Since Doug's sword is technically Warlock, does that count as two? Is Genesis going to sit it out and wait until the end? Seems a little unfair? Plus, I was really looking forward to having Magneto show up with the Cerebro Sword and just wrecking the Arakko Swordbearers.

LOL not that it matters to anything but my weird fucking brain, but looks like I got all but two of my guesses right for which sword was matched to which Swordbearer of Arakko. I got Bei and Summoner’s blades mixed up, but otherwise got all the rest. Now let’s see how well I predicted the combatant match-ups.
Also, anyone have any idea who’s supposed to be opposite Doug in the two of cups card, the one predicting that he’s going to find love or partnership with one of the Arakkoans? The silhouette doesn’t appear to match up with any of the Swordbearers unless its with their helmet or headgear off....at which point I feel like it could be anyone from Bei to the White Sword.

New Mutants #19 - Hellfire Gala preview
While Rahne struggles with her personal tragedy, her friend, Doug Ramsey (AKA Cypher), has had unexpected joy come into his life. Bei the Blood Moon, one of the Swordbearers of Arakko, married Doug in an impromptu wedding. Much to their mutual surprise, Doug and Bei have genuine feelings for each other. So much so that Bei sided with Krakoa against her own people, and now resides on the island with her husband. The downside is that Doug’s best friend, Warlock, has been noticeably keeping his distance since their return. Doug and Warlock have been so close that at times it’s hard to tell where one ends and the other begins. Bei may not have intended it, but her presence has disrupted Doug and Warlock’s deep bond.
I am A) Glad that they will hopefully be addressing the Doug Warlock relationship in light of Doug's marriage, I appreciate it's being portayed as Warlock giving the newlyweds space rather than roncor on either side.
And B) Both relieved and yet slightly disappointed that it looks like Doug has gone for classic tuxedo and bow tie for the Gala.
Tumblr media
I mean, he's adorable in a tux, and if he wasn't going to go with Warlock as their fused self, then I couldn't quite see Doug really go OTT with his fashion sense.
Also, it looks like Bei is leading, which given their height and strength differences seems entirely plausible and probably safer for all concerned.

Bei the Blood Moon, a mutant born in Arakko, never spoke a word for the first fifty years of her life. It wasn't until in the middle of the battle when she uttered her first word that her mutant power, the Doom Note, manifested in the form of a destructive shockwave that buried her troops in a landslide. The Doom Note is unique, in that it is sentient enough to make itself heard, but because its voice is a manifestation of its desires, it is not a true language, which explains why her husband, the mutant Cypher, cannot understand her. Bei was the first of the Arakki swordbearers to defect to the Krakoan side because she chose love over war, and saved Cypher, but fought by his side later on. Now, Bei lives with her beloved, having accompanied him home to Krakoa. #inkdrawing #inkart #ink #colorpens #pencildrawing #pencil #pencilart #pencilshading #pencilart #colorpencil #drawing #illustration #art #artoftheday #artistsoninstagram #artwork #fanart #marvelcomics #marveluniverse #marvel #marvelfanart #comics #xmencomics #xmen #xofswordsdestruction #xofswords #beithebloodmoon #krakoa #swordswoman #mask #headdress https://www.instagram.com/p/CILPHWKMpY8/?igshid=10fe88ffzkggu
