Tell us about kallathe!

Oh ho ho, what do you wish to know?

Kallathe came about because I wanted a full dark-side playthrough, and inquisitor seemed like it would be the easiest to achieve, and I was RIGHT. Dark Inquisitor is such a fucking hoot, it's one of my favourite storylines in the entire game, and Xanthe just hams it up so delightfully, to the point that I've struggled to play light side inq in comparison

I picked Sith Pureblood because I was trying to fill out my stickerbook to unlock all the races, as one did in the ye olde days of swtor, and it wasn't until afterwards that I ran into the supposed lore breaking fact that it was near impossible for a Pureblood to be a slave given their standing in the Empire. That lead me down a delightful rabbit hole of brainstorming how to justify her existence, which was how I came up with the backstory of her high-ranking father trying to cover up the existence of his mistress to appease the family of his equally high-ranking wife

Then I was OBSESSED with the Dread Masters when their expac came out, and just wanted to bury myself in all the weird and whacky lore related to them (and SO MUCH of it doesn't make any sense, and that just made me more obsessed because of course I wanted to fix it) and I had to ask, what sort of person would say yes to their offer to join their hive mind? What sort of person would want that power enough to sacrifice their sense of self, or would be arrogant enough to assume they WOULDN'T lose their sense of self

When KOTFE came out, I ran through immediately with Kallathe first because I needed to kiss Lana (AND ROYALLY FUCKED THAT UP LMFAO I WAS BROKEN FOR WEEKS) and it just all sort of... clicked. Like, oh, of course the Outlander was always supposed to be Kallathe. This is what she was made for. She's everything the Sith (race) are, instilled in one person, and Valkorion has rejected everything Sith about himself, moving further and further away from that heritage in his hunger for power. They're two sides of the same coin. They're not soul mates, they're soul nemeses. She is made stronger by everything he has rejected in himself.

She's my strongest Force user by far. The only one who comes even close would be Asmi (Consular), and Tahrin (Warrior) only gets to within reach because of her obsessive lifetime of rigid training

I love Kallathe so much. I love the Inquisitor so much. It's such a batshit storyline but it WORKS

Atmospheres

One of my favourite things in writing is setting the scene - the environment, the atmosphere, the vibes. And this becomes a fun little challenge I give myself when I’m trying to bring to life a canon setting in a game.

I look at screenshots and game footage, and I study the environment there - the colours and sounds and textures, the physicality of it, but also the mood. How it makes me feel when I look at it, and also how it makes the POV character feel, because those two reactions may be quite different. And then I figure out just the right words and cadence to really bring what I perceive to life in my writing.

For instance, I love the unsettling feeling of the Rakata vaults in SWTOR, and the whole vibe of Belsavis in particular, so I really tried to convey that in this fic:

Even in the depths of the cell blocks, Belsavis was never quiet. A low hum of energy was nearly constant as it carved its way through the ancient structures, and power gleamed in cold colours from the sockets set high in the walls. In the vast dimness of the corridors, the lights flickered like dying stars, and like eyes they seemed to follow the path of the intruders. Watchful. Waiting.

It was cold in the hollow passages beneath the snow. Some of the vaults were oddly temperate, warmed by the thermal energies of the planet where magma welled up through the crust. But here, Caspian’s breath shivered from him as he trotted along the sloping floor towards the surface. Scourge padded along behind him, an ever-present crimson shadow. Even though the angle of the floor put him below Cas, it did little to diminish the sense of his looming stature.

BG3 also has such rich, immersive environments, so even my so-far limited experience in describing them has been a blast. I’m very proud of my description of the Shadow-Cursed Lands from my first fic:

Here, though, it is different. The shadows that stifle this once-fertile landscape are thick, and coiling, and hungry. They do not merely lurk, waiting to consume the follies of the ill-fated; they are predators seeking prey, and they gnaw on the bones of the dead even as they stalk the steps of the living.

Dhamari can hear their hunger scraping around the edges of the campsite, where torches - plucked from rotting corpses on the roadside - now flutter and fight to keep the menacing fog at bay. The party has hunkered down for the night in as secure a space as they could find - a wide lip of stone sheltered by jutting crags on two sides and facing out into empty air on a third, exposed save for a few scraggly trees that still cling, quivering, to the precipice. More ash-grey branches hang overhead, twisting out from cracks in the uneven stone, their red leaves rattling in an erratic wind.

There is a foul tang on the air, the metal scent of dark magic wrapped around decades of decay. Even the fruits of Gale’s excellent cooking had borne the taste of it at dinner, but on the whole, the group had been too subdued by the atmosphere around them to offer much complaint. The meal was taken in taut silence, and then the weary adventurers had dispersed to their bedrolls, most drawing their tent flaps tight against the unsettling sounds emanating from beyond the boundaries of the campsite. Now, only Halsin keeps watch - minding the central fire, or else softly pacing the perimeter to check that the smaller wards of flame still burn.

I’m working on my next one now, which takes place in the Underdark/Grymforge. This is likely not the final version, but I’m already very pleased with the atmosphere I’m evoking:

The shoreline that greets them after their shrouded sail across the Ebonlake is not a welcoming one. There is torchlight to part the shadows, but it is harsh and brazen, and it glares in bronze reflections off broken stonework that climbs up and up into the cavernous darkness.

Long ago, this was perhaps a proud and impenetrable fortress. But now the structure is cracked and desecrated, seared by time and fire and caged by makeshift scaffolds that allow the duergar interlopers a means of clambering across the ruins. Yet shadows remain, uneven and treacherous, caught in the crevices formed by history’s slow forgetting of this place.

There is no beach to slide beneath their spiny craft, only a narrow wharf of straight-hewed stone jutting out into the unfathomable waters. Several other boats similar to their own are already moored there, looking unnaturally still until the silent ripples of the two new arrivals set the lake to lapping at their hulls.

So yeah! I find it’s important to establish the scenic backdrop of the story, because my brain is playing it like a movie in my head and I gotta know what it looks like and what the vibes are. (Can you tell I like describing eerie, abandoned places? xD)

And so we reach the end. Six tributes remain. By the end of this episode, five will be dead, and one will be victorious above the rest. It’s time to find out who is the best Swtor companion... at least according to the Hunger Games Simulator!

As it stands, we have T7-01, Doc, Tanno Vik, Kaliyo Djannis, SCORPIO, and General Garza left. So, without further ado... on with the show!

I still haven't written what happens on the Dominator/Eradication Day for Eight in his majn timeline bc I enjoy the unexplained empty gap more than fully putting it into words, like did he actually press the button? did he talk Jadus down? did he betray Intelligence as they all believed he did? was any of it even real?

Jadus still swept the Empire in fire and flames, but the panic and fear of the situation occluded the truth and there remains numerous unconfirmed reports on whether or not the Dominators actually fired. Keeper went with the most rational answer but after Intelligence's dissolution, he begins to question whether or not that was the right one.

The r/fanfiction discord has been playing the Hunger Games web game for a couple days, so I did a thing...

Reading over some info about Raina Temple again, and thinking about the guy on Hutta who wants to take his son and flee to neutral territory, it gets me wondering: just how many parents in the galaxy do anything they can to mask their child's Force sensitivity? Republic or Empire, it's all frightening. If you're in the Republic your kid's going to be taken away and you're never going to see them again, and they're going to be conscripted to fight for the Republic and serve the Jedi for life. Empire, your kid's going to the Academy and eventually to Korriban, which is more or less like sending them to the Hunger Games. They're going to be subjected to all sorts of intrigue and probably spend a lot of time fighting, too. Maybe you have the connections to get them apprenticed or get them favor from a Sith that isn't as terrible as Baras so it isn't a bloodbath for them, but maybe not. Either way it's a hell of a life, and I can imagine parents being completely frightened and distraught about it. There's no mention of midichlorians or kids being registered or tested at birth in SWTOR era. I'm guessing that there is a huge market in both the Republic and Empire for people with Force sensitive kids who want to flee with their families to neutral territory like Rishi or Kaon, both places that can wrangle the appropriate landing permits and housing, and those that can forge documents for travel.

I'm guessing there's also a very healthy black market for Force-suppressing drugs or devices to mask kids' powers so they won't be found out. There are likely a lot of labs and more questionable "medical centers" like the ones we see in the Face Merchants, but the trade is creating and installing Force-suppressing implants to hide Force sensitivity. I'm also imagining this is a huge source of blackmail: if someone finds out the kid is Force sensitive, they can threaten to tip off the Jedi or Sith. So when you pay for your Force-suppressing hardware or medicine on Nar Shaddaa or the seedier side of Coruscant, you need to pay for the surgeon's silence, too. And in thinking of this, I'm guessing that is WHY the Republic eventually tests everyone for midichlorians early on, and makes laws about the Jedi having the legal right to take children: so they can't be hidden and they can't be spirited out of Republic space.

i respond to comments on my current fics, especially because they're pretty niche - kotor and swtor mostly - and so i don't get a lot of them, and i crave interaction. i haven't responded to the comments on a lot of my older ones because i got a lot and it simply got too difficult to keep up with - for example, dylm has 491 comments and that's a bit much to actively respond to all of them

5)what's the fic you've written with the angstiest ending?

oh god this one is difficult. probably a rogue one fic back in 2017 i wrote based off the song whiskey lullaby, which is uhhh pretty damn angsty. for the most part i don't tend to end fics with angst, so all my angst is in the middle, and Let Me Tell You What there is a lot of it! but i like healing and growth and change and resolution and happiness so my fics tend to at least end bittersweetly?

uhhhh hm that's a hard one. i don't usually write explicit fluff either. probably it would be the one and only doctor who longfic i wrote way back in 2016 which ended with a wedding, which i am not linking because it is very old and not good writing and you can find it if you dig really hard.

7)do you write crossovers?

crossovers, not so much. fusions, absolutely yes, i love taking my favorite sw blorbos and putting them into new fandoms. i've got a hunger games fusion back when i wrote for tcw, there's a swtor/mass effect fusion siting in my drafts, and ofc my main project right now is a kotor/swtor/hp fusion that i am very proud of!

8)have you ever received hate on a fic?

i sure have. my very very first fanfic, which i posted on ffn, got outright hate yelling at me saying i'd clearly never watched the canon before lol. was sure an Experience as a very insecure 17 year old new to writing! also i wrote for some pretty ""problematic"" ships back in the day so i used to get shit for that, but that's a bit different imo

9)do you write smut? if so, what kind?

UNFORTUNATELY yes i do. none of it is posted yet, the only scene i've finished needs a lot more of the hp au posted before it has the context it needs, but i do in fact write smut. mostly it is full of emotions like angst and also so many horrible Dynamics, either dead dove or like, D/s shit, or what have you. vanilla sex is incredibly boring to my very ace mind and so i don't really have any interest in reading or writing it.

10)have you ever had a fic stolen?

not as such, but i have seen someone who very very closely copied a fic idea of mine once, including similar plot beats. it wasn't as well-written though so i ignored it.

11)have you ever had a fic translated?

not to my knowledge!

12)have you ever co-written a fic before?

oh god have i. i spent two and a half years writing tcw fic with @ellis-thescribbler, which was a very enjoyable time and ended in 2020. now i split my time between solo projects and a few different things i've got going with @ipreferfiction!

13)what's your all time favorite ship?

oh god this is a hard one. this is a really difficult one. it depends what hyperfixation i'm into at the moment. i still have a soft spot for codywan and rebelcaptain, but i think my favorite is probably going to end up being revalek. it just has all the dynamics i love and many of my favorite tropes are very common for it! i'm also incredibly attached to a couple of exceedingly rarepair ships that are the fault of the discord server and also AC and i interacting without supervision but the only one of those i can list is Cassus Fett/Mandalore the Ultimate. the others make me sound insane.

14)what's a WIP that you want to finish, but don't think you ever will?

i have two of these, both from my tcw days, which won't ever be finished because i no longer write with the other author involved. those would be the all i ask of you series, which is a tcw/hunger games fusion, and the other is the lullabies series, which is a huge rewrite of the latter half of tcw.

15)what are your writing strengths?

oh hmmm this is difficult to answer as i'm not very objective about my own writing. i have been told i am good at fight scenes before, and as much as i hate writing them i do feel fairly confident with them. i like to think i am decent at putting emotion into my narration and making the prose really feel like it belongs to the characters. crowdsourced from my discord: i am apparently very good at fluid prose and vivid descriptions. that is word for word.

16)what are your writing weaknesses?

i have always struggled with coming up with sideplots, and with juggling large casts of characters in scenes, both of which are being heavily tested in my novelization of kotor. i also feel like i spend a lot of time saying the same things over and over again while trying to write description, but description is Hard so

17)what are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

well, given that i do this a lot.... i don't always go hunt down conlang words, sometimes i'll just indicate other languages by italicizing the dialogue, but i definitely do it. in a setting as varied as star wars, there are so many other languages, and especially when writing nonhuman characters i like to show that they're nonhuman in more ways than one.

doctor who, back in 2016! god but it feels like ages since then

19)what's a fandom/ship you haven't written for yet, but want to?

Shepard/Kaidan, mass effect. Shepard/Javik, also mass effect. most of my swtor ships exist in my head but i haven't actually written them out on paper yet. mostly i just want to write for mass effect in general, and also dragon age, but i need to finish the dragon age games before i can write for them

20)what's your favorite fic you've written?

i have a few! war has let this age begin (it's where we've gone and where they've been) is the first solo longfic i've written and finished in a long long time and i'm pretty happy with parts of it. it's better to love (whether you win, lose, or die) has some prose that i feel like is probably some of the best i've written, and i'm pretty damn happy with it. and, frankly, the Vader + Ahsoka rebels fic i linked above in the kudos section, tell the world (i'm coming home), which is a Vader defects fic that explores redemption and i like a lot.

finally, i have to add an honorable mention to sharing beds like little kids (but that will never be enough), for the sheer worldbuilding fun i've had writing it, and where i know it's going. when it finishes, with all million+ words that series is going to have, it's going to be my favorite thing of all time.
