Donna´s idea

A/N: Here´s another FF jam session @only-one-brain-cell and I had yesterday. Enjoy (?)

Donna showed up at The Bear.

She had heard that Carmy had a girlfriend and she wanted to see it with her own eyes. Naturally, Carmy hid in the walk-in 🤣

Richie: Carmy, your mom is looking for you and your new girlfriend.

Carmy: WHAT?!

Richie: Your mom-

Sydney: Your mom is here?!

Carmy: Nope!

Richie: Carmy! 🙄

Carmy: We- we’re out-

Richie: Of what?

Carmy: Of, of, of… carrots! Yes! I need to go get carrots.

Sydney: Tina is cutting carrots right now!

Carmy: *goes in the walk in*

Richie: * yells to make sure Carmy can hear him from in there * And what about your mom?! Where should I tell her you are?

Carmy: Pick a state! Hell, pick a country!

Donna, who saw her son willingly lock himself in the walk-in, followed him suit and got in the walk-in with him. Then proceeded to spook him from behind.

Syd went in too.

Then Richie.

Family meeting.

They all looked at each other.

No one said a thing.

It was like a silent movie.

Someone else tried to go in, saw everyone in the walk-in being weird, and changed their mind.🤣

It was like the Spiderman meme at first.

Carmy broke the silence:

“Mom! You can’t be in here!”

“That’s really the first thing you’re gonna say to me in years?!”

Donna lectured him.

Richie lectured him.

They talked to him like he were 5. But Syd defended him. Carmy thanked her. Richie said Carmy was pussy whipped.

Then Donna lectured Richie.

Carmy agreed with Donna. And Donna was like Awwwwww ‘he agrees with me’😍Finally!

Hugged him and smothered him.

Carmy: 😳

He went rigid, like a mommy and just stands there, awkwardly, holding his breath. Not returning the hug.

Syd: Awwww!

Richie: 🙄 "I don’t have time for this shit!"

* storms out *

Sydney: Good! We didn’t want you in here in the first place! Get out! Let’s leave ‘em alone and give ´em some space.

* pushes him out and they leave Carmy and his mother to it *

Donna: Can we talk now? Not in here?

Carmy: Nope. Mom! I’m very busy.

He tried to brush her off. Again.

He failed. Again.

Donna grabbed a random fish that was next to her.

Carmy: Mom! What are you doing?

Donna: Helping you. You’re busy, you need help so we can talk when you’re done.

Carmy: Um… no. Mom, get out of here. I’ll call you when I’m done.

Donna: You’re not gonna call me and you know it…. I know you, Carmen, I’m your mother! I made you. C’mon! Tell me! What are we doing? I’ll help!

Carmy: No, you don’t know me.

Donna: Oh yes, I do. You haven’t called me since you got back home.

So she grabbed more random ingredients. Turned around and marched out of that fridge like a soldier on a mission. Then started cooking random stuff in the kitchen, like nobody´s business. Also messily, very messily.

Everyone was slightly terrified of her 🤣

But also, they were like… ‘this explains a lot’.

Tina was about to cry.

Ebra was in shock.

Syd: Donna, can I help you?

Donna: I’m helping you, dear!

Carmy: Mom, get the fuck out of here!

Syd looked at him like she was gonna kill him and plead guilty when she saw Donna getting frisky with her knife.

Carmy heard Syd, telepathically, loud and clear: ‘No one touches my fucking knife!!!’

Carmy: Mom! Mom! I’ll talk to you! OK, OK, just drop that knife, OK?!

Donna: Good. *does as she is told*

Carmy: NOW!

Donna: Yep, coming!

He grabbed her arm and dragged her out of the kitchen.

Once in the office, she did all the talking.

He didn´t listen, though. He dissociated.

She talked to him like she talked to Sugar at the hospital when she gave birth.

At some point, Carmy actually started to listen and was fairly surprised. But he was nowhere ready to hear what she had to say.

He was like WTAF!

Donna told him how proud of him she was.

Carmy was like: ´Who is this woman, and what has she done with my mother?!´

So after she said her peace and a bunch of other legal things Carmy didn´t pay much attention to, she left, but not without telling him first that she wanted to help him, really help him this time around, and enphasizing that that restaurant was all she had left of Mikey so she was determined to make sure it never left the family and it never got turned into a fucking Applebee's.

That was when Carmy started to truly, actively listen.

Mostly because of Syd, but also because of Sugar, and because he happened to be on the same page as his mother, which was a first.

He asked a few probing questions, and then he told Donna he needed to talk to Sydney about it because she was a big part of it all, too. It was not a decision he could make without running it by her first.

"Mom, now this restaurant is not just mine and Sugar´s. It´s Syd´s too".

Donna was stunned, and she´s a straight shooter. "So, are you two together now?"

Carmy: 😳😳😳

Carmy: No.

* lies *

He was terrified of her. Also, he wanted to protect Syd.

But Donna knew better and twisted the dagger to get the truth out of her son.

Donna: So you just gave part of the restaurant to a random woman?

Carmy: No! I´d never do that! She applied to work at the Beef. She’s experienced, talented, and she has plenty of ideas- she´s my right han-

Donna: I thought you two were just fucking. So it’s serious? Are you two getting married?

Carmy: OH MY GOD, MOM!

Donna: Is she part of the family now? Are... Are my grandkids gonna be…

Carmy: JESUS CHRIST! STOP TALKING!!!

It all escalated quickly to a full-on review-style moment:

Syd heard it all and barged in without knocking first.

Syd: Carm?

Carmy: Sydney! Please, tell me there’s an emergency! And she was just leaving.

Donna smiled at Syd and left.

Donna: Bye, dear, always a pleasure. And, remember what I said, Carmen Anthony Berzatto. I want a final answer by the end of this week. I´m not getting any younger.

*Dramatic exit*

Syd comforted Carmy. He was still processing everything that had just transpired. She put her arms around him, but he was just there, trying to come up with all the answers to the crucial questions his mother threw at him in less than 5 minutes. His eyes were lost in space, his mind was running at 10000 m/h. His heart was racing. He could feel his next panic attack creeping in. Fast.

So Carmy went out to the back alley and chain-smoked his ass off, till the panic attack stroke indeed.

Richie followed him down and inquired, "Sooooooo, how did it go?"

Carmy: *angry bear glare*

Richie: OK then *goes back inside*. Guys! Carmy is outside, and if you value your life, don´t go out and don’t talk to him.

After that, when his pulse went back to normal and the cold sweats subsided, Carmy went about his day and buried himself under insane amounts of work, as usual, even more than usual, actually.

He moved around like a robot, silent and aloof. No screaming, no life behind his eyes whatsoever.

Life returned to his baby blues that night, though. When he snuggled into Sydney´s chest and she played with his wet hair till he calmed down and fell asleep. That seemed to solve all his problems for a while, worked every time.

But before he drifted off to sleep, they talked for a few moments as she stroked his curls, and decided that he should accept Donna´s offer; she encouraged him to do it, even when it meant Donna was going to buy her out too.

Syd told him he could rehire her as his CDC when he was the sole owner, nothing really was gonna change for her if she signed a new agreement at that point, once the restaurant was his, and if he still wanted them to be partners. Carmy was crystal clear, probably more than he had ever been, "You´re kidding me, right? There is no version of this story where you and I are not partners, Syd."

The next morning, he woke up long before the sun came out and went for a run to let off some steam.

He thought about Donna´s offer to make him the sole restaurant owner to protect Michael´s legacy, which was a strategy that seemed taken right out of the pages of a TV drama script, Succession´s script, to be more precise. Later that same morning, he had a serious talk with Nat and Cicero about it, and they both agreed as well. And they had previously talked to Donna, too, so nothing was news for them. They couldn´t wait for Carmy to close the deal.

Sugar needed the money for the baby and to pay off her mortgage.

Cicero to avoid jail, basically.

It was unanimous. He was to accept her offer and get over with it.

Carmy did not like it at all. He hated to see how everyone seemed to trust Donna now. As if they didn´t know better. As if she weren´t the devil they all knew.

Once the decision was made, there was a part of him that kept second-guessing himself. So he asked for other people´s opinions trying to find the one that told him to trust his instincts. No one did that. Everyone he talked to advised him to accept her offer. Richie, Pete, even Marcus.

So it was a done deal. He was accepting Donna´s offer, signing all the paperwork for her to buy Cicero, Sugar, and Sydney out, and then gift the business to him, at which point he was going to make Syd sign a whole new agreement, this time to share half of his restaurant with her.

He planned to do just that.

Easy.

Pete was going to assist him through it all.

Breezy.

Syd was onboard.

Perfect.

Donna was gonna be off his back as soon as the whole paperwork was filed, and he could, for once in his life, get to enjoy his brother´s legacy, even when deep down it kinda felt like he was trying to fly too close to the sun. Didn´t matter. He was gonna go through with it and make it work. Full stop.

Magnificent.

* But he didn´t have to *

Because right after finalizing the whole legal process and becoming the sole owner of The Bear, Donna Berzatto, who had never seen his son as happy as he was with Syd, had another heartfelt conversation with him.

No one really knew what they talked about, but one thing was for sure: Carmy walked out of that house that once Donna wrecked with her car, with one thought on his mind and one thought only.

He was gonna pop the question, and that was that.

And there was going to be no prenup, which made Sydney his partner in business and life, entitled to the 50% not only of the restaurant but of everything he owned. Donna´s idea.
