Maids & Sylphs: Maintenance & Generation

There's no need to justify the meaningless destruction~...

Yeah, I love that song.

This is a little bit of a contentious one, since there's an extant debate about the Class pairings with these two; but Maid:Sylph works best for me, so that's what I'm going for.

The Maid:Sylph class dichotomy embodies maintenance, generation and responsibility. They operate alongside their Aspect to ensure it functions correctly, a caretaker for it; being able to both generate it freely and keep it from going awry after their arc is done.

They're also defined by quite an interesting and consistent character arc in two parts - that I'll go over in the narrative section. It involves a lot of denial of their Aspect.

Canonical Maid players are Jane Crocker (Maid of Life), Aradia Megido (Maid of Time) and Porrim Maryam (Maid of Space).

Canonical Sylph players are Kanaya Maryam (Sylph of Space) and Aranea Serket (Sylph of Light).

So, let's get to Point A - the Maid's narrative function.

The Maid is defined by an overworking at the hands of their Aspect; they are, simply put, made to use it and work with it tirelessly without ever being able to have it.

Their relationship with it is exclusively defined by others, with no opportunities being given for them to forge their own stance on their Aspect; it's alien to them, all they know of it is what they're made to use it for.

Jane Crocker, the Maid of Life, indoctrinated and kept in the dark thanks to an oppressive regime that would see her stripped of agency; her life under constant threat of assassination as she denies any and all conspiracies under her nose.

Aradia Megido, the Maid of Time, puppeteered by the deceased and the forces of death themselves, tossed around throughout states of mortality whilst forced to shelve her own intrigue in archaeology. No interest in the past is granted on her own merits.

Porrim Maryam, the Maid of Space, denied an intuitive chance to make her own way with femininity because of Beforus' oppressive patriarchy; her opinions left unheard as she slaves away in the jadeblood caverns. Her own gender and curation of the Space around her, inaccessible.

This is followed by a stage of personal growth wherein the Maid sheds the shackles and works with their Aspect independently. They awaken into a new power with their Aspect as their steward and responsibility; and now they work for it because they want to.

Jane Crocker ends the story having inherited control of her own Life; she's CEO of CrockerCorp and has no oppression left to control her and regulate her agency.

Aradia Megido ends the story having become a caretaker of the afterlife, Maid of Time taking responsibility to keep the deceased in check and fondly regard extermination.

Porrim Maryam ends her story having become a garrulous and opinionated advocate whose sexual freedom and comfort in her own gender identity goes hand in hand with her views on feminism and patriarchy. (she's also trans, but you didn't hear that from me)

Point B - the practical function of the Maid.

This one's fairly simple, given we have two whole examples to work with and they both have their own moments of badassery.

Jane can create Life. Though she expresses that, uh... questionably, with her rather clear-cut wishes towards Jake in Trickster Mode; she also expresses it literally. The overload of her Life powers leads her to turn the desolate and barren LOCAH into a thriving wilderness, teeming with Life. What's more, she can give Life to those who have lost it.

Aradia can create Time. We see her freeze Jack Noir in temporal stasis, using her Aspect and generating Time for her cohorts both literally and metaphorically after the fact.

Porrim, speculatively, could create Space. Think Jade, but less overpowered.

The creation of their Aspect leads directly to their maintenance of it, one does not just make something new and then leave it to rot; you have to take care of it, allow it to grow and keep to the right path.

Point C, the narrative function of the Sylph.

Like most other passive Classes, we're flipping the active counterpart on its head for this one.

Whereas a Maid is defined by a working relationship with an Aspect they never get to know, the Sylph is an opposite. They hold such a breadth of knowledge and desire to help with their Aspect, but nobody lets them.

Kanaya is desperate to curate the Space around her and meddle with it, through her fashion expression to her interest in gardening, and keeping her friends in check, but nobody allows her to. She's shunned merely as the auspistic 'vvillage twwo wwheel devvice' and decried as a meddler 'til she starts putting her foot down and sawing incels in half.

Aranea is desperate to be seen, to be given Light; she merely wants attention and acknowledgement from her friends - because she literally just fucking wants to talk about the things that interest her for more than five minutes. She keeps repositories of knowledge, adores giving exposition, and is pushed into ignorance and oblivion 'til she resorts to throwing planets with her brain.

This is not to say that the Sylphs are... completely justified; because their growth comes in the form of acknowledging that their Aspect needn't always be meddled with. The Maid allows their Aspect to grow on its own, but the Sylph is compelled to interfere and change it because 'they know best'.

Kanaya meddles even when it's condescending, unaware of her own shortcomings in that regard; making glaring errors in her curation of Space that lead to the termination of relationships (Vriska) that she refuses to even give an explanation for.

Aranea heals Light even when she shouldn't, intruding on personal boundaries and consent through her Aspect. She freely shares information about her cohorts that really should be left in the shadows, sometimes, and breaches both Jake & Terezi's wishes by 'fixing' their disabilities, per se.

...She was totally justified in throwing planets, though.

Point D, therein, is the practical function!

This is interesting, because Homestuck equates passive creation with healing. The Sylph less actively generates their Aspect and moreso fixes it, making them a sort of Anti-Prince in a sense.

Kanaya, we have less material to work with given her lack of a God Tier status; but it sounds to me like healing Space seems inherently tied to her awakening as a rainbow drinker (repairing her own role in the narrative after her death) and the curation of Space through removing things that could harm it.

Aranea, however, is clear-cut. She heals Light by healing any disabilities that would impair someone's desire to see or understand truth; Terezi's blindness leaves her unable to see, and Jake's brain injuries leave him unable to understand; in Aranea's eyes, anyways. (I'd argue she's a very reductive and possibly passively ableist viewpoint, but I digress).

It's a form of creation, for sure; but it's directed towards others just as a Passive player does. I find them really interesting, especially just because of the limited material we've got; I would've loved to see a God-Tiered Kanaya. Alas...

Anyway, by now, I'm sure you all know what's coming for you next week. I'll be on schedule this Time, so clear out some Space in your schedule.

Sonic Classpects <3

I designed them to be a twelve player session because I thought that was more fun :-) I didn't necessarily keep gender specific classes/aspects in mind. Do, however, keep in mind that classpects aren't always a one-to-one with characters' personalities. Sometimes, they're roles that they have to come into, or accept.

Also, if anyone draws them in their godtier outfits I will be eternally grateful. Sonic: Heir of Hope Sonic is a symbol of hope; whether he realizes it or not, his actions carry weight. That means that although overall he inspires a positive change— bringing hope to others— if he makes a mistake, it brings despair instead. In this regard, Sonic is hope personified.

Tails: Mage of Light Tails uses knowledge as a weapon, sometimes to his detriment. He's often given seemingly impossible quests, with not much time to complete them. You could argue that he's cursed to be the brains in a team full of brawns. That being said, he seeks out knowledge like a moth drawn to a flame; he lives off of it.

Knuckles: Knight of Rage Knuckles's entire purpose is to protect and serve, both his friends and Angel Island. However, rather than being a level-headed knight archetype, Knuckles is a hot-headed warrior, thinking with his fists, rather than his brain. This leads him to have a bit of an anger problem, which he uses to mask his insecurities. This can also bring rage to those around him.

Amy: Sylph of Heart Amy is self-absorbed, only in the sense that she believes that what is in her heart is always right. Apart from that, she looks to heal the heavy hearts of those around her, even animals and complete strangers. She is caring and giving at her best, and volatile and clingy at her worst.

Metal Sonic: Page of Doom Metal Sonic was built to be a harbinger of doom, and continues to do so of his own volition. He has great potential, but is held back by his own insecurities— which can mean he was programmed with limitations, or that he has a more human side that conflicts with his programming. Because of this, he becomes doomed himself, in an infinite cycle of being destroyed and rebuilt.

Shadow: Prince of Blood Shadow is driven by his bonds, whether it's to his friends or enemies, and those in the past or those in the future. He uses these relationships as excuses to wreak havoc. Therefore, he can be seen as selfish, whether his cause is noble or not. In truth, Shadow is more stubborn than anything. Because he defines himself by his relationships, he is often misunderstood, especially by himself.

Rouge: Thief of Space Rouge is incredibly patient and adaptable, traits that are imparative for a jewel thief. Her passion is taking things for herself, which may be egocentric by nature, but she is known to have good intentions. She is naturally confident when it comes to her abilities, and isn't above using her feminine charm to accomplish her goals.

Blaze: Maid of Mind Blaze is calm and collected, weighing the multitude of options before acting. She also has this effect on others as well, getting them to see her reasoning. She is often rigid, as she's used to making the tough decisions, and carries that burden with responsibility. However, hardships can cause her to act out of character, being paralyzed by choice, or leaving her fiery temper to take over.

Silver: Witch of Time. Silver has been known to manipulate time, both figuratively and literally. While he can time travel with ease, he also has an unwillingness to take things as they are. That being said, he also has a tendency to end up in difficult and dreary situations. He's constantly stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Vector: Rogue of Breath Vector may be a detective, but he doesn't play by the book. He lives as he pleases, being able to slip into the role of leader, bodyguard, comedic relief, etc. However, this can make him hard to pin down. As a detective, he takes others' autonomy by bringing them to justice. This not only helps feed him and his partners, but it also keeps the streets clean.

Espio: Bard of Void Espio is a stealthy character, at first glance. With his ability to become invisible, he's able to stealthily gain the upper hand on his opponent. However, he also has the innate desire to show off; he's cool and he wants others to know it, even if he acts nonchalant about it. In both ways he destroys void: either by filling it or filling its role.

Charmy: Seer of Life Charmy is the charisma and joy of Team Chaotix. He wants to bring life to his friends by being upbeat and having fun. Though he may be a naïve child, he's still attuned to others' feelings, and desires to empower them best he can. He isn't always great at it, sometimes coming off as annoying and overeager instead.

Sylph of Heart

Sylph: One who heals their aspect and/or heals through their aspect to benefit others. Ex: Kanaya Maryam and Aranea Serket

Heart: The aspect of emotions, impulsions, souls, and the self. Ex: Dirk Strider and Nepeta and Meulin Leijon

Analysis: The Sylph of Heart is someone who always leads with— get this— their heart. They are deeply loving and empathetic, and constantly act as a therapist to those around them. That being said, their perception of what people should be feeling may be skewed by their own emotions. They are extremely passionate, even to a ferocious extent at times. Get on their bad side, and they won't hesitate to hit you where it hurts. They love playing match maker, and have a keen eye for it. However, they may have an aversion to blackrom relationships, and as such, often find themselves in the role of an auspistice. The Sylph of Heart is also known to talk a lot about their own interests and feelings, often oversharing about personal crises. But don't think that they aren't interested in your feelings as well. Maybe they can be meddlesome, but it's only because they care. The Sylph of Heart is also the kind of person who's laughter is contagious. They have a way of making those around them feel good.

Possible Powers: > The ability to heal physical injuries, albeit at a lesser extent than a Life player. > The ability to affect others' emotions in a positive way (a la Blue Diamond in Steven Universe Future). > The ability to transfer souls into different bodies e.g. putting ghosts into new bodies, essentially healing their soul and bringing them back to life.

SYLPH: One who heals or heals with their Aspect

HEART: Feelings, the Inner Self, the Heart, the Entire Emotional Spectrum, the Soul

A Sylph of Heart would be able to heal and create through Heart. During their journey, they would have to learn the intricacies of their Aspect and how much to apply in certain places to heal various complex wounds and tears.

For Feelings, the Sylph of Heart could be able to heal ones complex emotions to make them easier to understand. When you feel like you can't verbalize what you're feeling, when it feels like an insurmountable lump in your throat, the Sylph will be able to gently massage the lump, working until it smooths out enough for you to begin to unravel like a ball of yarn. The Sylph could also heal through feelings, by allowing you to finally feel the emotions you've been holding back for so long. At last you can feel angry, sad, anxious- everything. But at the end of it, you will feel stillness. Calm. Peace.

For the Inner Self, the Sylph would be able to help heal the stunted Inner Child that never got to play and frollick. The shredded parts of you that could never mend from the abuse you endured could at last be re-stitched together. You would once more know who you are, and what you are capable of despite all that you went through.

As for the physical Heart, the Sylph would be able to mend any heart disease or afflicting so long as there is a Heart at all to heal. Tears, rips, swelling, abscesses...all of that fixed thanks to the Sylph of Heart. As to healing THROUGH the Heart, this can by done by the Sylph of Heart syncing another living being's heartbeat to the patient's, acting as a sort of life support to give them an extra boost as their body fights hard against their injuries or illness. The Emotional Spectrum is simple and overlaps with Feelings. The Sylph of Heart heals the emotions you either cannot feel or have trouble feeling, allowing them to finally be experienced whether it's grief, confidence, joy, or anger. Finally feeling these emotions would count as healing in and of itself, allowing the person to continue to grow their personal potential. Finally for the Soul, this could be done in a variety of ways. The Sylph of Heart could take fragments of souls and make them whole once more, the same being true for souls that were so troubled they became violent poltergeists. This could also lead into quite the nifty ability: At the height of power, the Sylph of Heart could potentially be able to cure Grimdarkness, as it can be defined as a corruption of the Soul itself.

I need a little help, i have been mostly confused about my classpect since i have described myself as a sylph of heart, but i have been doubting my classpect since people (offical homestuck quiz) has told me im the light aspect

Aspect is the force that is most important in a person's life, whether lacking or abundant, whether good or bad, whether they want it or not.

The official TEZ quiz isn't bad for telling what your aspect is, but I wouldn't necessarily call it good either. If you know how to juxtapose the aspects and classes, it can be a somewhat viable springboard; it classified me, for example, as Mind Prospit, but I am Heart Derse. My class just happens to be Seer, which warped my answers on the quiz to appear as the inverse of what I was. (Seers study their true aspect through the lens of their inverse - I study Heart and Identity via Mind and Rationality. This means I appear to be a Mind Player on a surface level, but my deep desires are aligned with Heart; this is something a simple quiz cannot discern.)

For a lot of the people I have helped classpect (my friends, in private, because the way I classpect is extremely personal), they skipped the quiz entirely. What I found was that it helped the most to look at what their inverse was and see if that fit their experiences as much as the potential true classpect they were looking at.

Here's how I look at it:

If you describe yourself as a Sylph of Heart, your inverse would be Bard of Mind. A Sylph of Heart fulfills the Bard of Mind inverse by passively destroying that which is Mind (Rationality and Logic). Being a pure source of their aspect, a Sylph of Heart is either "scared of" or "sees no need for" what is Rational and Logical. They focus on actively enhancing Identity and Emotion, and thus, passively cause the destruction of Rationality and Logic. A Sylph enhances their aspect so much that they end up completely snuffing out their inverse aspect, which is very similar to what the Bard class does.

But AO, if both are supposed to fit, how do you tell which one you actually are?

Fall back on what an aspect is: Aspect is the force that is most important in a person's life, whether lacking or abundant, whether good or bad, whether they want it or not.

Now examine yourself, and be willing to be honest with yourself too. Which class holds what you struggle with the most?

For Sylphs, their challenge is to learn how to listen to the needs of others instead of assuming they know best, and to balance themselves by learning that it's okay to rely on others for their aspect sometimes.

For Bards, their challenge is to be able to embrace their aspect and not be ruled by its whims, learning to control the way it impacts themselves without letting it be destroyed.

As you can see, despite their similar actions, there is quite a difference in challenge and motivation! Though I will say, these are my class definitions, and class definitions can vary from classpector to classpector. At the very end of it all, only you can decide what fits and what doesn't. I hope I was able to help a little.

sylphs are honestly a sweet class in relation to their aspects.. a sylph of heart is especially sweet, and ill be explaining how so here ^_^

the sylph

"the passive creation class, sylphs are the “ones who heal/create for others through their aspect/ones who heal/create for others their aspect”. this means that in a session, the sylph will act as the dedicated healing role no matter what they are doing. their challenge is not to wait on the sidelines for when the healing is necessary, but act on their own drive."

sylphs start out healing and creating the areas of their aspect for others!

one of our strongest examples is kanaya, a sylph of space. she healed rose's view on space/physical reality by simply influencing her, and rose ended up taking up alchemizing as a hobby, which is more in touch with physical space and less of her own ideas and wishes. but she also acted on her own on the meteor, where she created and healed her own physical space and became a rainbow drinker in the process, then proceeding to kill eridan, taking even further control of the space around her. overall, she overcame the challenge of a sylph!

aranea is a sylph of light. by talking endlessly about her session in beforus and how the cherubs work, she is creating new light for others, and healing the wounds of unknown knowledge. she is a great example of how a sylph can be very eager on the sidelines waiting to heal the means of their aspect.

basically, sylphs start out postponed to the sidelines. they are often eager to help where they can in terms of their aspect, but it's still very passive. the sylph must overcome a journey of self-discovery, defying the "selfless" acts they started out with, but not rejecting them. instead, they heal and do what they want, learning to create for both themselves and for others, this time on their own terms.

the heart

the heart aspect is very personal. it affiliates with feelings, inner thoughts/opinions, and even goes so far to your very soul. heart players will naturally/usually feel things very deeply, whether they'd like to or not. depending on things like the heart player's class, lunar sway, or just outright their personality, they'll vary in the ways of how they deal with their feelings. for example, and heir of heart would be very in tune with their feelings, and sway easily along with them. a witch of heart, however, would defy their emotional tendencies and instead view them as a tool, or maybe in a negative light that cannot be trusted. but regardless, these two examples both use emotions to their own will when reaching the heart player's full potential.

an example is nepeta leijon, rogue of heart. with her robin hood archetype of a class, she "stole" pieces of the heart aspect and gave it to her friends in the form of shipping! unfortunately, rogues aren't usually sure how to interact with their own aspect for themselves, and this was shown for nepeta's loss of courage in her feelings and inability to truly confess her crush to karkat.

dirk strider, prince of heart is another example. if he destroyed heart/destroyed through heart, you could consider it as hurting the feelings/souls of people around him. whether it's through being off-putting in relationships or ripping out and destroying someone's own soul!

the sylph of heart!

a sylph of heart is a great caretaker to other's feelings. they are nurturing and understanding, and often have ways of cheering up their friends in dire emotional ruts or situations. they heal their friends' negative emotions, but they can also create new emotions for others. happiness, anger, sadness... a sylph of heart can inflict these on who they wish for an outcome they'd like.

but when it comes to themselves, the sylph could be at a loss emotionally. they might have trouble tending to their own emotional toil, and struggling to figure out how to heal their own thoughts & feelings.

this particular sylph needs to learn self-reflection and how to deal with their own difficult feelings. they learn self-comfort and, in turn, how to harness their emotions even in the most stressful/dire of events! this will enhance their emotional abilities and understanding in themselves. overall, now the sylph can create and heal their own emotions, becoming stronger and more able with newfound experience! ^_^
