Meet Synthesist Vreizz the Specter! Probably best known these days for being a musician (I've described them as "the Porter Robinson of Asura" & I think that's still true; they use a holokeyboard a lot of the time) and putting out one album a year every year for some time, Vreizz was actually an Inquest scientist working at the Thaumanova Reactor who had an unfortunate realization of man, maybe all the inhumane experimentation and rampant cruelty and thievery and murder isn't cool, tendered their resignation with plans to go focus solely on their music career...

...and immediately had to run for their fucking life through the Reactor's corridors, because their supervisor decided YOU? MORALITY? WHISTLEBLOWING? NO. DISGUSTING. I'M REFUSING YOUR RESIGNATION. DIE, BITCH and came after them with intent to kill. And it almost worked!! Except, uh, for the tiny detail that this was the exact moment the Reactor went critical and exploded, tearing rifts in spacetime, throwing their half-dead body into the depths of the Mists, where...

...they're not exactly sure what happened. They're pretty sure they're Vreizz, but, you know, there's a non-zero chance they're a Mists-being that's taken on the memory, personality, and skills of the original Vreizz, with the original being long dead. They have blood! Is it theirs? Couldn't tell you. It doesn't really bother them, they're a cheerful trickster-type person, but it does bother some people.

When not performing &/or composing they spend most of their time in the Mists, so they have weirdly comprehensive knowledge of Mists business (fuckin' wizards mucking around in there. quit it, you sons of bitches.) and... maybe not so much knowledge of Tyrian current events. ?????? What do you mean Cantha's open to the outside world. When'd that happen.

These days they've taken to just showing up out of thin air to say mysterious, incomprehensible shit to the Commander and then vanishing as soon as her back is turned. Heehee. :3c

Jeff Parker ETA IVtet - Bijou Theater, Knoxville Tennessee, March 28, 2025

This year's typically awe-inspiring Big Ears festival took place a few weeks back — and thankfully for the rest of us, there are a whole lot of excellent recordings. I went straight to the SML tape and I was not disappointed in the least. This remarkable collective (bassist Anna Butterss, synthesist Jeremiah Chiu, saxophonist Josh Johnson, percussionist Booker Stardrum, guitarist Gregory Uhlmann) come out swinging and keep up an impressive momentum throughout an almost hour-long set. Radical grooves abound. And radical grooves are what we need in 2025, right?

Butterss and Johnson were busy for Big Ears; the pair also joined Jeff Parker and Jay Bellerose for a rare ETA IVtet set, which of course sounds terrific on a FunkIt blog recording (you can also watch it on YouTube if that's what you're into). The IVtet explores some of the pieces from their recent/recommended The Way Out of Easy opus (dig Parker's "Lonely Woman" quote on "Freakdelic"), plays a great tune from Parker's Suite For Max Brown, and closes it all out with a ridiculously lovely rendition of everyone's favorite Bacharach/David song "This Guy's In Love With You." This guy suggests you drop everything and go listen right now.

Archivist 2025

It's been a while, so, I wanted to come back and do some touch ups on the Archivist, now that the Synthesist is out as a revised version of the Mentallist.

So, yeah! Nothing flavor wise new, but mechanically, its over all cleaned up and less janky, with some features shuffled around, and access to a new feature: Esoterica! Something to spice up your archivist characters and make them stand out next to Clerics and Wizards.

Pop Culture Builds 14: The Nahobino (Shin Megami Tensei V)

The whims of gods make victims of us all. That is certainly a true statement for many religions and mythologies, but perhaps nowhere more so than your average jRPG. After all, if the stereotype is that jRPGs end with you killing god, it must be because said god deserved it for their actions.

Such is the case in the Shin Megami Tensei series, a franchise so big that it’s side games have spawned whole franchise of their own. The most recent main line game, however, begins with a high school student being pulled into what is effectively hell, and bonding with a powerful demon to stay alive, and in turn, befriending and summoning demonic allies of their own.

Of course, the trick with this is that the Nahobino, which is the protagonist’s title in the game, is very flexible in their build and nature, but I’ll do my best to try to realize them in the game.

Now, this character starts out as human, but given that they fuse themselves with a powerful demon, I think tiefling is also a viable option.

Picking a class was a much trickier prospect though, given that the specific choices of your character can vary a lot in that game. With that in mind, I decided to go with a summoner to reflect their tendency to have creature minions, but figuring out what archetype, if any, was tricky. I finally decided on the unchained summoner, with your favorite summon being represented by the eidolon, while other summons being traditional summoned monsters.

The demons of SMT could technically fall into many different categories, but for simplicity, we’ll assume the eidolon has the demon type. However, if you’d prefer something else, for example elemental for a Jack Frost analogue, that’s fine too.

Meanwhile, their spells can come from across the series, ranging from buffs to damage and utility, which the unchained summoner list does handily provide.

Naturally, as a summoner, you should load up on feats that buff your summons passively, as well as those that provide extra summon options. However, don’t forget that you can fight as well, so a few combat feats of your preference can go a long way as well.

The Nahobino doesn’t have much in the way of canon equipment either, but he does tend to manifest an energy sword in his attack animations, which could be interpreted as a brilliant energy longsword, so that’s one bit of equipment he’d likely use.

Now, there are some options here build wise. You could choose to run them as a broodmaster summoner or master summoner to better represent having multiple minions at once, or even synthesist summoner to represent the fusion of mortal and demon power if you so chose. It’s really up to you.

There isn’t a whole lot that I can nail down specifically about this build, in part because of the flexibility of the character, and in part because the wikis on the character are rather bare-bones (and I’m not watching through multiple playthrough videos or build suggestions online, sorry). But that does mean there are plenty of ways to make this build your own. I hope you have fun with it! That will do for today though.
