A plurality of experts believe the United States should create a new federal agency dedicated to artificial intelligence governance, according to a survey AI-pt1#fullscreen&from_embed" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">conducted by Axios, Generation Lab, and Syracuse University. The survey polled 215 computer science professors across 65 of the most prestigious universities in the U.S. on topics related to AI. we polled 213 computer science professors on A.I.w/ @axios + @SyracuseU pic.twitter.com/mEDFabWkZy— The Generation Lab (@Generation_Lab) September 5, 2023 According to the data, when asked “What is the best entity to regulate AI,” the majority of respondents answered either “new “Department of AI” Government agency” (37%) or “global organization or treaty” (22%).Only 16% answered “congress,” just two percent higher than the number of respondents who chose “irrelevant: AI cannot be regulated.” The final 10% of respondents split their answers between “the White House” (4%), “the private sector” (3%), and “none: AI should not be regulated” (3%).Image source: Axios-Generation Lab-Syracuse University AI Experts SurveyThe survey also contained questions about how the AI sector will affect the future of employment. The majority of respondents indicated that they would advise a young person to pursue a career in AI, engineering, and data science. At the other end of the spectrum, 31% of the professors polled said they’d advise against seeking a career in media and 19% said the same about the arts when asked which fields young people should avoid. “None of the above'' was the most common response with 42%. When asked if the respondents think there’s “a threshold in the evolution of AI after which humans cannot take back control,” the answers were split between “no, probably not” (41%), “yes, probably” (35%), “no, definitely not” (19%), and “yes, definitely (6%).The overall sentiment of the experts seemed in juxtaposition with the general public and business leaders. Where the latter tends to poll bombastically about the potential for AI technology to rapidly change the economic and employment landscape in the near future, 73% of the professors said they believed that AI will be capable of performing less than 20% of tasks that humans do today at or above human-level. Syracuse’s ongoing court battle with members of the since-dissolved Theta Tau fraternity demonstrates the university’s posture on questions of free speech and freedom of association. The university dismantled Theta Tau and suspended several of its members after a video emerged showing members performing a satirical skit laced with racially charged language.

I have to wonder exactly how much more severely Syracuse University would have embarrassed themselves at this point if they had a full student body on campus right now.

To those who demonize depression, please…stop doing so.
During my short 23 years on this Earth, especially the last 7-8 months, I have been fighting an internal battle that I continuously find myself trying to understand every single day before going to bed, getting out of bed, and throughout my day. A consistent, 24 hour all-out mental war wondering what it is that will finally have me convinced I’ve become the person I’ve always wanted to be.
I’ve never been satisfied with anything I did that was less than perfect, which you can imagine is a terrible way to live your life and I know I’m not the only one.
Everyday is a new challenge, trying to figure out who I am and what I am to become. Everyday I wonder why I give the people I love advice that I know I could never follow. Everyday I think about how different my life could have been if I had actually followed through with my passions. I cannot remember a point in time in my life where I truly felt happiness, and the only times I’ve ever come close were times I convinced myself I was doing better until the sun went down and found myself laying in bed thinking about all of the mistakes I’ve made, the decisions I’ve made, the people I’ve hurt.
I always thought there was nothing wrong with me, and that I was just..who I was. Waiting for that moment I can go throughout my day not dreading going home to sit in my room to contemplate all that I’ve done wrong rather than just be grateful for what I have and what I’ve been given.
Depression is the single hardest thing I’ve ever had to deal with in my entire life and I did not address it until March of this year when I finally hit my breaking point. I feel like I’ve lost my identity, or never actually had a way to define who I was as a person. I’ve spent my entire life helping those with problems I know I could never handle myself because I know how much stronger they are than I am. I’ve only ever done what I needed to do in order to keep up with my own lifestyle and I’m slowly beginning to realize I’m setting myself up for misery.
A word of advice to those who feel the same way that I do, take care of it before it is too late. Pursue your dreams, pursue your passions no mater what anyone tells you. Never feel like you aren’t good enough or you can never achieve what you aspire to do. Don’t sit alone wondering what you could’ve done differently because you can’t change what happened yesterday. Once you start doing that, you’ll never be able to take that first step forward to happiness.
To those who demonize depression, please, please stop doing so. depression is not weakness. Depression is not something you can fix by telling someone to “get over it” or “remember how good you have it.” My entire life I’ve felt like I needed to remain on some sort of pedestal of perfection, when in reality I’ve never come close to standing on that pedestal in the first place. Take care of those you love, be a friend to someone who needs it. Because a lot of times, that person just needs someone who they can talk to. They want someone who will listen to them. Help someone realize how much they have to offer to society rather than telling them how much they’re burdening those around them because of how they are.
Always remember that you come first, and it’s ok to admit you aren’t happy. No matter what your situation may be.
I love you all.

A week ago, the freshman Musical Theater majors had the amazing opportunity to take a dance masterclass with two current cast members from the national tour of WICKED. And do you know what made it even better? They were BOTH Syracuse University Drama Department Alums!  They taught us original choreography from the show and answered all of our questions. We were so happy to have them here!
