i’m living in poland for the summer and i feel sooooo superior now that i kinda know how to pronounce polish words 😌 but fr what the heck is with all the sh and ch sounds. are they supposed to be different because they all sound the same to me.
ahahaa yeah, i think my last name would be pretty annoying to say since it has both the sh and ch sounds. But yeah, they are different and they sound different, too. I never thought that they could sound the same but i guess i get it

btw polish people might be white but that doesn't mean calling the language a sneeze or a keysmash is any less offensive than calling Chinese ching chong language you know? minus the racism I guess? but not really since the ever expanding definition of whiteness didn't always include polish people. still xenophobia tho
same goes for welsh etc btw.

Tadeusz Kościuszko: A pronunciation guide
Prompted by @butoridesvirescens, my attempt at helping the non-Polack sound out this thoroughly silly name. Stress should be on the all-caps syllable.
Tadeusz
ta: tah (like "ta da!")
de: deh
usz: oosh (like "whoosh")
Put it together as tah-DEH-oosh
Kościuszko
koś: kosh (gosh but with a k)
ciu: chew
sz: sh
ko: basically just ko (like in "Smith and co.")
So that makes kosh-CHEW-sh-ko

btw I know Polish language is difficult and frustrating and sometimes it seems to be "szczdzfrtz" (although this comes from not realizing that for example "sz" is practically one sound that is known in most languages aka "sh" and no one is actually reading "s" and "z" right after one another ALTHOUGH we are able to do that easily). but I don't like SOME of the jokes made by foreigners about Polish language because I don't think native English speakers do realize what it's like to speak a language that was forbidden to speak for like 100 years, to speak a language that some of your ancestors died to preserve under the oppression of the foreign powers trying to wipe out the whole culture

I think anon might be also including "ć" and "ś" in their ask about ch and sh sounds - i have multiple friends who tried learning polish or even learned it but still can't differentiate ś/sz and ć/cz/dź
oooh you might be right, I can see how that can be even more confusing

I refuse to give English people the right to laugh at Polish having words like "chrząszcz" (beetle). "Ch" is just English "h", cz → ch, sz → sh. "Ą" is interesting - it's like the French "on", if you know French. "Chrząszcz" sounds something like h-sh-ą-sh-ch. Not something to be found in English but not as bad as it looks. Meanwhile you have words like "eighths" or "strengths", 20 vowels and a spelling system that is the opposite of useful :)
Don't get me wrong, I love English and it is an easier language than Polish but those weird-looking words are just made-up of diphthongs.

The pages in this category are redirects from names that are unsuitable for inclusion in a printed version of Wikipedia. To add a redirect to this category, place {{Rcat shell|{{R unprintworthy}}}} on the second new line (skip a line) after #REDIRECT [[Target page name]]. For more information follow the links. Never substitute redirect template(s), nor place them on soft redirects.
See also the complete list of redirect templates and the redirect style guide.
This is a maintenance category, used for maintenance of the Wikipedia project. It is not part of the encyclopedia and contains non-article pages, or groups articles by status rather than subject. Do not include this category in content categories.
This is a tracking category. It builds and maintains a list of pages primarily for the sake of the list itself. They are not part of the encyclopedia's categorization scheme.
This category is hidden on its member pages—unless the corresponding user preference (appearance → show hidden categories) is set.
These categories can be used to track, build and organize lists of pages needing "attention en masse" (for example, pages using deprecated syntax), or that may need to be edited at someone's earliest convenience.
These categories also serve to aggregate members of several lists or sub-categories into a larger, more efficient list (discriminated by classifications).
"Unprintworthy" redirects are redirect pages on Wikipedia that aid online navigation, but would have little or no value as pointers to target articles in a hard-copy book. The name of a redirect may be unprintworthy for a number of reasons, including being nearly identical to the name of the target page, containing typographical errors, or not being encyclopaedic. Redirects are not unprintworthy just because the name may be offensive to some, unless the name is also not encyclopaedic.
