Flügel / A Kaleidoscope of Life ~ Moon 2023
Tumblr media
4.5-year awaited Grand Theater return on September 22 (before things) ft. my eyes dead from the unseasonable heat and yet another failed attempt to get my FLYING SAPA REFUND FROM 2020 THAT THEY STILL OWE ME.
This, unexpectedly, turned out to be the hands-down Takarazuka highlight of Tadaima ’23, and that’s… despite a play of extremely questionable content. Tsukigumi—Mugen Musou / Krung Thep—had the honor of being my last live Takarazuka before the shit hit the fan globally, and the troupe is such different vibes I felt like I stepped through a portal (not that Yukigumi isn’t, dear lord, but small theaters are always a little weird vibe-wise). I had a feeling this would be my first and last live top Tsukishiro Kanato, and she did indeed announce taidan days later. We have no shortage of 95th top stars, but, since I was a hardcore Yukigumi fan ten years ago, Reiko is the only one I’ve been closely following since her shinko days. She’s gotten so good, and every time I’ve watched her since the Romance Gekijou stream, I’ve seen in her movements and expressions that she's absolutely watched Komu on repeat in her moments of doubt. It makes my heart sing.
FLÜGEL SPOILERS (can’t believe I’m saying this again, but cw suicide, also nazis 🙄):
If you’ve ever thought to yourself, “Gee, you know whose take I’d love on the politics of a divided Germany? TAKARAZUKA’S,” well, maybe this show is for you! It’s the 1980s (although you wouldn’t know it till they bust a hole through the Wall… they really dropped the ball on costuming) and Jonas (Reiko) is a GDR officer who grew up thinking his mother (Shirayuki Sachika) was a nazi after she was arrested in his childhood for war crimes and they were separated on opposite sides of the partitioned country. After we open with a completely historically inaccurate scene from the Russian Afghan war (just SCREAMS Takarazuka, doesn’t it?), Jonas is put in charge of overseeing an East German concert featuring wildly popular West German idol Nadia (Umino Mitsuki), while other GDR officer Helmut (Houzuki An) is tasked with keeping an eye on them/preventing spying or something (idk, this plot doesn’t hold a ton of water to be honest). The general conflict is that Team Reiko is pro-unification, and Team Chinatsu is staunchly anti. Amidst a flurry of various activities that realistically would have gotten Jonas thrown in the gulag 1000 times over—including helping old war buddy?? Amashi Juri escape to West Germany via an underground route operated by Irodori Michiru and Haon Mika—Team Helmut attempts to dampen pro-unification sentiment by plotting a terrorist attack at the concert (in the form of an exploding microphone) and pinning it on a priest (Yumena Rune) and his band of peaceful student protestors. Thanks to Jonas and Luis Wagner (Kazama Yuno), who is Nadia’s manager and also secretly the best spy in the world or something, the mic is retrieved and the plan is thwarted. When Nadia returns to West Germany, she is moved to become a pro-unification activist thanks to the friends she made on the other side, and leads a protest that results in breaking the wall down. Helmut, unable to cope with the defeat of his ideology, takes his own life quite dramatically (so be aware of that). After travel is permitted between east and west, Jonas discovers that his mother (aging with dementia), while employed by the nazis, actually used her position to help Jews escape. Jonas and Nadia don’t fall in love, but they do look off into the sky together in hope and friendship.
I really did not care for this plot, yet somehow I also didn’t absolutely hate watching it. I think there were enough isolated highlights to make the experience worth it:
I! Love! Reiko! And I’m so happy I got to see her as top once! And her voice is fantastic lately!
Reiko and Chinatsu have an unexpectedly compelling chemistry
Chinatsu has an unexpected chemistry with me and my feelings
The final protest scene (set to a dramatic rendition of Ode to Joy) features Chinatsu repeatedly trying to hit Reiko, while Reiko just blocks all her punches and stares straight into her eyes. It’s a lot.
I had similar feelings watching Oda as I did watching Agachin; she wore those 4.5 years loud and proud. +1000 confidence, absolutely ready for her nibante era.
Nice little send off role for Ren Tsukasa, who is ABSOLUTELY BELOVED. People cheered the theater down for her, it was genuinely moving. No one in anything else I saw got that much applause except for maybe Kaiho Naoto.
KALEIDOSCOPE SPOILERS:
This, brainchild of Kurita-sensei making her revue debut, was the revue of the year, and probably the revue of all pandemic era for me. It was fresh, it had a theme, the music slapped, it actually called back a little to Ogita-sensei who I will miss in tkz until the end of time. LET WOMEN MAKE REVUES!!
The premise is a journey through different eras of Tokyo, triggered by the turn of a magic kaleidoscope. Each era’s scene is beautifully designed, and has a little self-contained plot. The transitions are seamless, and I loved the song choices (CITY! POP! CHUUZUME!). Tsukigumi as a whole is vocally outstanding right now, and the impact was awesome. Verbal descriptions don’t do it justice! If you’re tired of Fujii/Saitou/Nakamura B throwing all their old scenes into a tumble dyer and pulling them back out in a random order, watch Kaleidoscope, even if you aren’t a fan of Tsukigumi.

smth smth rambles that are entirely my opinion and i could be wrong (so dont attack me) you know this chapter made guda, fuijmaru ritsuka with already Many Issues worse is because of "mash" or rather kyrie's death but ultimately comes back to mash...that dantes did for them.
we even see a while back how guda was already shaken by not knowing whether mash is safe during lb6 after that fog like their priority is mash. mash.
they were already frantic as soon as they remembered mash almost questioning everyone about her whereabouts and immediately got reckless just trying to reach her at norwich. and when only when they were together did the "narrator" emphasize on the sheer relief guda felt like-- wow the obvious signs in OC chapter 2 makes you realize furthermore that guda's sanity hangs on a thin thread named 'mash' asdfgh
yes guda loves mash!! yes they care about her!!! but look and read at how guda tells absolutely nothing to mash- and that applied the same to kyrie!
(more below)
kyrie wanted to know and ask her senpai about the situation like we see her really wanting it but ultimately backtracking in the end because she trusts guda and she's even supportive. and guda was grateful/relieved that she stays innocent about the weird things going on in their tokyo.
they do compromise at one point that if kyrie really demands on explanations, guda would tell her but...
guda doesnt tell her anything, (kyrie believes in her senpai so even when faced with death, kyrie didnt break under pressure) keeps her in the dark so no one comes after her. for her to be ultimately safe. so she remains...innocent, normal who stands alongside "mama" and "little sister" as they arent involved in the first place about whats been happening. and guda wants to keep it that way for their family. not a real family, but a family nonetheless that cared about guda. an epitome of normal- which mash kyrielight has attained.
and now you see guda, who, upon waking up asks mash kyrielight if she was okay. if she was alright. guda doesnt stop their questions until mash answered. and so mash answered.
"I'm okay, Senpai. My vital signs are normal... so I'm completely okay."
all the while guda had just dismissed being in pain literally one minute ago and just hugged her tight. they "save mash the trouble" to tell her about the pains they went through in the singularity so as not to burden mash. so they stuff their pain inside the corner of their heart again, completely satisfied with mash's safety and disregarding their own health. (you also see in section 23 that theyre cherishing the normal and small moments with mash.)
mash is normal. mash looks pure to guda, her heart filled with "color" in comparison to guda whose heart has become "transparent". an inverse character development which will ultimately destroy them both.
for mash, who sees her Senpai as strong and unwavering, the image of kindness and strength when they held her hand during part 1 crushed by a coffin which she continues to believe them to be that way until now.
for guda, who sees mash as someone who's become normal. one last remnant that reminds them of a past life lost, mash with that purity and normalcy becoming an ideal to protect (as if she was glass) because they no longer have their own. (and mash is also literally the only one left close to guda, who remembers all the events of part 1. which... adds more to how losing mash would break guda even further.)
(also we see guda say 'tadaima' coming home to an empty house, the loss of kyrie and their family still in mind, and a little later, the Avenger mindset comes back and settles in as they're plagued by bloodlust. then when guda comes back to mash, their home, mash is their home. do you realize that? do you realize what im saying? mash says: "welcome home, senpai." and that was enough for guda. that eased everything in guda's tumultuous heart.)
i remembered guda avoiding on telling "mom" that they and kyrie were near the "gas leak site" / britoalter's battleground so like.....of course their lying to medical staff about getting back to the battlefield would carry over here.
deliberately making sure the "normal" components of their fake high school life remain untainted is what we see guda do. they shouldered everything, terrifying as it is, just to protect them but ended up inevitably losing them in the process.
there's also that contrast in seeing a dead body between kyrie and guda. kyrie still stood strong against dantes and remained rational and calm while telling "ojisama" that this wasnt good for guda. meanwhile guda, while still able to think about calling the ambulance after seeing the da vincis absolutely lost their mind when it came to kyrie which their mind thought of mash- and i think guda thought of both as 'one' person so they went absolutely insane right then and there
during the conversation with amatsuka, thats the part where guda became finally stable. because its implied guda's mental state really broke at kyrie's death which their mind automatically thought it to be "=mash is dead". but ukelele-senpai saved the day by reminding guda where they are, if mash and kyrie were the same person, and helping guda calm down and think of seeing that blue sky with mash during the part 1 epilogue.
and augh guda you shit!!! you need therapy!! dont put mash in a pedestal!! dont treat her as if she's fragile!! dont treat her like porcelain meant to be protected while you take on everything for the sake of keeping mash safe because she is the only remnant of your past left, because she is the only "normal" person you have left!!! guda you need to understand that if ever mash gets hurt someday or dies and its out of your control, you need to understand that it wont be your fault!! you need to understand that because someday you will part ways with her as well and you need to be able to be ready to lose again. if you lose mash once and for all, what will you do!?!?!? this is not healthy guda!! gudaaa you hear me!!?? gudaaaaaaa

"Kira, kamu mau kemana, dek?” tanya ibuku, saat aku baru saja menuruni tangga di rumah. Ruang keluarga di rumahku memang dekat dengan tangga menuju lantai dua. Wajar saja, saat aku turun kedua orang tuaku tengah bersantai sambil menonton televisi.
“Makan-makan, Ma. Sama Udin, Ucup, Karen. Mumpung Udin sama Ucup di Jakarta,” jawabku singkat. “Aku baru mau pamit ke Mama sama Papa.”
“Oh ya, ngerayain ultahmu kemarin, ya?” tanya ibu.
Ibuku mengangguk, “iya, Toshi bilang mau main basket sama temennya.”
“Yasudah, Akira juga biar bersenang-senang sama temannya.”
Mau tak mau, ibuku pun setuju. Setelah berpamitan pada kedua orang tuaku, aku pun langsung menjalankan motor beat kesayanganku menuju restoran tempat janjian dengan kawan-kawanku.
“Pulangnya jangan kemaleman dek,” pesan ibuku sebelum pergi.
“Papa… belum tidur?” tanyaku heran.
“Belum. Papa pikir, kamu gak bawa kunci rumah. Jadi Papa tunggu kamu.”
Aku terdiam mendengar ucapan ayah. Kuperhatikan wajahnya yang tampak lelah dan mengantuk, namun masih memaksakan diri untuk menungguku pulang. Pria yang kini berusia 55 tahun, seharusnya sudah beristirahat, kan?
“Kenapa Papa repot-repot nunggu aku?” tanyaku heran.
“Mana tega Papa biarin kamu tidur di luar kalo kamu gak bawa kunci, nak?”
Aku terdiam mendengar ucapan ayahku.
“T-tadaima,” ujarku, sambil memeluk ayah. “Selamat hari ayah, omong-omong.”
“Akira, kamu gak mabuk, kan? Kamu memang sudah 19 tahun, tapi—”
“—aku gak mabuk!” potongku cepat. “Pokoknya, aku sayang Papa.”
Bisa kulihat wajah ayahku yang sedikit salah tingkah, “yasudah, sana tidur. Sudah larut malam!”
Maka aku bergegas menuju kamarku, lalu pergi ke alam mimpi.

Not necessarily a request but!! I'd LOVE to hear your theories on the new pv if you'd share! I have so many thoughts abt the character design cohojcojf
I HAVE SO MUCH THOUGHTS ON THE PV THAT MY TWEETS SHOT UP TO 27K HELP uhhh this is gonna turn out pretty long because i have so many thoughts
(spoilers for act 9, 10. 11 up ahead, along with copious amounts of angst)
Tumblr media
FIRS, I LOVE THE CINEMATIC PARALLEL WITH THE FLOWER AND ASTEROIDS i thoght the pollen was a rather strange thing to be emphasize on banri and sakuya's posters but then i saw the pv and *&^@(^(!^$*($ THAT'S SO PRETTY
Tumblr media
what if this bubble reflects reni's old dream of putting on a god-like performance? considering how bubbles pop after a certain amount of time and how it reflects the person before it pops, the fall and eventual pop of the bubble is a symbolism of reni's dream being "more real"? considering how yukio won't act ever again, the bubble popping means that reni is awoken from his dream (since he's the only one of the first gen who had the bubble, and how the first gen has the theme of "nothing lasts forever," unlike the newborn gen's "nothing lasts forever, but...")
Tumblr media
HARUGUMI. OH MY GOD. THE CINEMATIC TRANSITION JUST MADE ME CRY!!!!!!!!!!! okay so they're pretty bright, right? then they have the vignette/filter before they zoom out, onto the screen of azuma's robot friend. they could've just made it zoom out, but no, THEY HAD TO PUT THE FILTER THERE. it could mean that the a-12 death theory is real and that the arc planet agents (hisoka and azuma) managed to document a-12 before they died.
(a-12 death theory is pretty popular on twt, since the synopsis of the plays from the countdowns imply that a-12 is just a rock now)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
ITARUUUUUUUUUUUUUU%(^%*^(*%!^(*%^(!*%^(!% other than the fact that we have the zoom in on him and he's like the leader of the a-12 dwellers in the harugumi pic above... he's also holding the glass flower. we all know how a3 loves paralleling the plays with the event/main story, so i think itaru will have a pretty major part in act 12 (my irl also theorized that itaru will start the family etude for sakuya this time) some tweets to better visualize how impactful itaru being the glue in act 12: this is the thread that talked about itaru as glue, and another one
Tumblr media Tumblr media
WHAT IF THIS IS ONE OF THE CGS... ONE OOMF ALSO TALKED ABOUT HOW HE'S POSSIBLY PRESENTING A MONOLGUE IN THIS, WITH THE REST OF MANKAI RIGHT BEHIND HIM... kinda like banri's portrait in act 11 :')
Tumblr media
ALSO CAN I PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE TALK ABOUT THE "TADAIMA" AND THE LYRICS TOO??????? a lot of jp artists i follow theorize that sakuya will go on a journey in act 12 (metaphorical or literal idk), but he'll still go home to his mankai family. also, the short version of the last planet song (and the long one too) has "tabibito" (traveler), and considering how the title of the plays are "home" and "origin"... it could be saku (the play character) going on a journey to find his origin, but he'll go home to anims once he finds the truth. to add to this, the harugumi part with the old leaders (where itaru sings last), he says "we'll wait for you" or smthn around those lines T-T
Tumblr media
as for act 12... this is my theory. so, amadate sr. is very sus and he seems to have a grudge against hakkaku for not writing a script for his troupe. what if he sends out an offer for sakuya to join hyakka before he destroys mankai with more rumours (because he probably spread the rumours around banri in act 11). i don't know how they'll insert saku(ya)'s past since it's getting referenced a lot, BUT I JUST FEEL LIKE THEY'LL INSERT IT SOMEHOW (i crave sakuya lore and development). however, i think harugumi wouldn't try to influence his decision of joining hyakka (bc they're not aware of amadate sr.'s actual intent, but maybe aoshi and kabuto will), but they'll instead remind him that he'll always have a place to go home to (reference to: episode 23 of act 1 - a place that can't be taken away).

Hyperbolic Chart ~ Snow Troupe (2023)
Tumblr media
Ah………….
Standing in the Seinenkan hallway and finding out Maaya Kiho and Ikuta-sensei got married feels like it happened in a different lifetime. So much has transpired since, little of it good.
SPOILERS (cw death, chronic pain, suicide—perhaps read below if you were thinking of watching this but are struggling with what has recently occurred in Takarazuka):
Hyperbolic Chart is a hospital drama of sorts based on a novel that follows surgeon Fernando de Rossi (Genius! Womanizer! Dark secret??) ((Kazuki Sora)) as he’s approaching the premature end of his life. He has an incurable illness that gives him a reckless streak, and a moral code that puts people first and doesn’t necessarily always agree with the written law. Although they have a great respect for each other, this puts him at odds with fellow doctor Lamberto (Agata Sen) whose moral code is very by the book. The chief of medicine’s daughter Clarice (Nonoka Himari) wants to marry Fernando, but he falls in love with the new nurse, Monica (Kasumi Sana). Love triangle aside, over the course of the show, Fernando decides to give one of his patients, Cesare (Ouji Kaoru), who is quite afraid of death, an unnecessary and ineffective surgery for his terminal cancer, while lying to the family about the surgery’s likelihood of success (the surgery scene takes the form an epic dance, in which Fernando metaphorically battles Death, played by Manomiya Rui). The hospital thinks this is ethically wrong, but Fernando thinks it’s important to give Cesare one last moment of hope, so his family can see him smile again. Cesare expresses gratitude for this decision in a letter he writes just before his death. Subsequently, Lamberto discovers via some x-rays that Monica finds in Fernando’s home that Fernando is also suffering from a terminal disease. He confronts Fernando, and they have an argument that ends in Fernando refusing treatment. In the end, Fernando takes Monica on a romantic trip to his hometown, introduces her to his mother, and ultimately decides to end his own life rather than suffer the pain of allowing his disease to run its natural course.
The themes of this show, which are very much about the role doctors play not just in physical care but also in emotional care and acceptance of death, as well as choosing one’s own path to death, kinda hit differently now.
Thoughts on the show itself though…
Agata Sen wore the 4.5 years that have passed since I last saw her PROUDLY. She was stately, handsome, subtle, in command, really got the intricacies of the complex differences between Lamberto and Fernando. There is no villain in this story; only the abstract conflict of opposing morals, neither of which are “wrong.” Agachin may still need to go to singing bootcamp, but she blew me away with how well she captured the nuances of this.
I went in hoping I’d wind up obsessed with Kasumi Sana, since I haven’t seen her before, I don’t personally care for the apparent musumeyaku track within the troupe, and at the time I thought I needed to have more of a vested interest in who would be next (guess I’m free??). I still have no idea how I feel about her, because I absolutely despise Monica. I don’t think it was Kasumi’s portrayal; I think Monica is a terrible character, the product of a female love interest in a workplace drama being written by a hundred-year-old man. She has no personality, she’s essentially thrilled about being sexually harassed at work, and considering Fernando’s MUCH more developed character, there is no basis for the strength of his feelings for her, other than she happens to be standing there one day while he’s thinking about death and she’s a woman so it’s her job to be available to receive his emotional burdens (and we are expected to find this utterly romantic). I find it infuriating, and I think it singlehandedly prevented me from feeling moved by the show.
Clarice is only marginally a better character (if one woman wins the man the other’s whole personality must be jealousy, right?), but I think Himari is probably a top 5 musumeyaku in the company right now in terms of acting, which helped.
Sora. I watched Hyperbolic Chart with about as light a feeling as one can have while watching this sort of thing, because I genuinely thought that she had about six years and a legitimate shot at top stardom ahead of her, and that my fantasy of watching her lead some kind of witty screwball enemies-to-lovers show inspired by a Cary Grant movie or something had more than zero chance of becoming reality in the future. I’ve never been so caught off guard by a taidan announcement, and it seems none of my friends/acquaintances (some of whom have fandom roots going back to like, Mori Keaki) have either. I felt this before, but I feel it even more now: who looked at Sora and thought ah, yes, the perfect canvas for our most fucked up tragedies?? Yume Chidori, Lovers’ Suicide, this… it’s been three leads in a row. On top of that, the latter two are Yukigumi re-stages that for me are kind of irreplaceable.
She was heartbreaking, she was good. Girl is a triple threat af, and has only become more so in my absence. But I’ve been watching her since she couldn’t stop giggling and could barely put a sentence together, and this role doesn’t fit the Sora I know. It was written for Chigi. I wish this wasn’t her last lead. I wish I’d sat in the theater for her one more time and burst with joy before everything changed.

As a manga reader, I loved this film. I appreciated the additional scenes branched out from the manga. Before reading the manga or watching the film, the story seemed very typical slice of life shounen-ai, but I was proven wrong.
The story does focus on the relationship between Mitsuomi (Furukawa Yuuki) and Yamato (Ryusei Ryo); however, it also explores the main and supporting characters as individuals and gives us an insight into their internal obstacles and struggles. It also includes the themes of family, friendship and goal searching.
The character interactions and chemistry were excellent; I didn’t sense awkwardness or forcefulness in the cast members performances.
There were a few beautiful cinematography. However, some scenes had shaky camera movements and dull lighting. The music had its moments, but it didn’t quite hit the mark for me.
Overall, I would recommend the film if seeking a light-hearted romance with a slow-build up and relaxing setting. For a more in-depth character perspective, I would recommend reading the manga.
Note: I was tempted to sub the film because it moved me and inspired me however it seems a few other subbers are planning to cover it so I may not.
Update:  English subs are now available on my site, link in bio on my twitter @ichihachisubs

Tadaima (I’m home), 2013 Eng Subbed
I came across this short film called Tadaima (I'm home). I've been a fan of Komatsu Nana since seeing her in After the rain (2017). This short film caught my attention as it's based on the 2011 Japan earthquake. I loved the minimal use of background music and gradual build-up between Komatsu and Uno-san's character, Sumire and Chimato.
I covered this short film to also get used to making softsubs due to many requests from previous projects (Restart).
Starring: Komatsu Nana and Uno Shohei.
Summary: Sumire, a teenage girl, convinces a taxi driver to take her to her homeplace in the Tohoku region. There, they find an area ravaged by the tsunami that followed the megathrust earthquake on March 11, 2011. The disaster destroyed her house and took away her parents. Through compassion and carefully chosen words, the man will offer the young girl what she has lost: the will to survive and live (NK international)
The film directors social platforms are available on Instagram (@daisukeshimada__) and Facebook (daisukeshimadaphoto) If you found this film interesting consider supporting him
Sadly, the DVD's cannot be found anywhere to purchase online due to the film company no longer exists.
However, I have also made softsubs for offline viewers. Considering this is my first time making softsubs, it will be accessible for non-patreons (Available on the Ichihachi fansub community via LiveJournal).
Hope you enjoy - Ichihachi

Since I did just reference this in a previous post, I figure this is worth covering, however brief...
==============================================
ULQUIORRA: ――只今戻りました藍染様
I'm home, Lord Aizen
AIZEN: おかえり ウルキオラ ヤミー
Welcome home, ULQUIORRA, YAMMY
“Tadaima“ is the phrase you say when entering your own occupied home, and “Okaeri“ is the phrase you say when welcoming someone home.  They don’t literally mean the same as “I'm home” and “Welcome home” word for word (they’re both shortened from longer formal phrases) but they function the same in the common context.  What doesn’t  come across here is that this isn’t a casual exchange, it has this weird pretense of, like, playing house, almost?
Tumblr media
I don’t know how to explain it since there really isn’t a good English equivalent, since we don’t really have as much super formal speech as the Japanese.  There is just something a little out of place about the way it’s being used here, because this isn’t really within the realms of it’s normal, grounded and casual real world usage.  The idea that Aizen has designated this place as “Home” creates a certain mood about the way this scene ends the chapter, and colors the scene change itself as a very distinctly dark and moody kind of shift.
It’s definitely lost in translation, but to be fair to the translators, I don’t really know how I’d go about trying to communicate something this subtle, because any attempt to explain it immediately robs it of that very subtly.  Language is hard, guys...
==============================================
さあ戌果を聞かせてくれ
Come now, let me know the result(s)
我等二十の同胞の前で
In front of your compatriots of we 20
It’s a curious remark to make, and seemed to sum up the odds the heroes would be facing.  We had just learned that by Hitsugaya’s estimation “10 Vastlord” would be enough to topple Soul Society.  And so that idea that potentially twice that many were already under Aizen’s command was a big threat, and set up the arc as if it would be a guessing game of which background characters would eventually be revealed as any of the 10 necessary power houses to defeat Soul Society...  But as we all know that’s not a hook that ever actually got used...
But also, a key word here being,
Tumblr media
Curiously Aizen seems to count himself among Ulquiorra’s “countrymen” or “compatriots” suggesting he’s not talking about the Arrancar specifically but just the forces of Los Noches.  There are 17 silhouettes, so with Aizen, Gin, and Tousen that makes 20 other than Yammy and Ulquiorra themselves.  But they’re the one’s being spoken to (what I assume is collectively) so obviously it doesn’t count Ulq, but I assume it also doesn’t count Yammy.
Alternatively I’m overthinking that detail and it’s just that there are a few shadowy blobs missing and Aizen really does mean 20 Arrancar.  In which case the phrase could be translated as “Brethren” or “Brothers” more effectively.
Either way it creates a very distinct tone of familial or factional unity, which ironically gets immediately bucked when Grimmjow starts mouthing off the very next chapter as the scene continues.  I think that’s very intentional though, and not just Kubo’s often shaky writing; I think he means for this whole sense of unity and organization framing the Arrancar to feel fake or forced.  It’s Aizen playing house with all this, the Arrancar are all just in it for themselves and as Hollows have a kind of natural resistance to Aizen bringing in this very Soul Society-like social/military structure.  It’s a neat detail to this early world building Kubo had to do to set up the new arc...
Tumblr media
But while we’re here, let’s actually do a headcount real quick...
Ulquiorra and Yammy are of course already introduced going into Chapter 198, and Chapter 197 ended on the “20 brethren” line.
In 198 Grimmjow is named for the first time, and in the background we see DiRoy and Shawlong with him, who get named in the next chapter.
Since the attack happens almost immediately after this, and I think it’s safe to assume Grimmjow’s gang wasn’t made in the intervening hours, Nakeem, Edrad, and Yylfordt are presumably among The 20.
But also seen in 198 are 3 unnamed (and indeed never to be seen again) Arrancar
And with them, a very early design of Tier Harribel.
Tumblr media
So, the above pictured are all the Arrancar we know of, up to that point, and we won’t count Ulq and Yammy, but that’s still half “The 20″ right there.
But let’s take this a step further, just for laughs...
We know Aisslinger Wernarr is loitering around somewhere, and he was first seen along with DiRoy way back in Chapter 25, plus later databooks will establish that he is Arrancar #17.
We later find out the Privaron were the previous Espada, replaced by the current ones, that adds Dordonii, Cirucci, and Gantenbain to the count.
Looking ahead a ways.... When Zomarri moves to finish off Rukia after her fight with Aaronierro, he mentions that Aaronierro is the “last of the original Espada” which should logically also place him among The 20.  It should also make him older than the rest of the Espada who presumably were born afterwards and not born first then powered up after the fact...
But here’s where things get tangled... this means that Yammy, Ulquiorra, Grimmjow and Tier are all part of a second set of Espada, because Dordonii, Cirucci, Gantenbain and Aaroniero make up the original generation. (I’m not getting into 102 or 100, covered in the LNs)  But Kubo establishes later that Grimmjow was once Arrancar #12 before becoming #6.  If that’s so, then presumably all the Espada have a birth number prior to their Espada rank.
So, if the only Arrancar are in the room, (and if we just assume Aizen & crew don’t count) then they are implicitly the 20 oldest surviving Arrancar.  Then based on numbers, as Kubo would eventually give us through databooks and the manga itself, most of 11-30 are accounted for, and we know based on the fact that they all appeared alive and not as part of some flashback or references to the deceased, that they were alive during this scene...
In fact, only #19, 21, 23, 28, 29, 30, were never assigned to a character.  But that means we’ve only got 6 slots in The 20.  Even if we assume the other 6 implied original Espada died when being replaced, leaving only 103, 105, 107, and 9, that’s still 8 Arrancar either visibly in this scene or implicitly present at the scene that can’t fit into the mere 6 empty slots we’ve got.
This also implies that anyone not in that 20 count were “born” as Arrancar inbetween this scene and their first appearance.  Most notably problematic in that is Nnoitra, Tesra, Szayelaporro, Nel, Pesche, and Dondochakka, all of whom show up in an indistinctly placed flashback.  And even more contradictory than what’s already tangled here...
Tesra was actually given a number, and he’s Arrancar #50, which means that in between the scene with “The 20″ and Nnoitra’s flashback the other ~20+ Arrancar had to be made first AND THEN the whole drama in the flashback.
Also, when Wonderweiss is born he’s #77, and Nnoitra is present at that scene already in his cobra/spoon hood, rather than the regular high collar he wears in his flashback.
All of which means that Nel was only out there in the desert in baby form for like, a week or two, tops? (I have a whole other giant theory on what she was supposed to be, but that rant will have to wait for another time...)
Anyway, I know it’s really just sort of obvious that Kubo didn’t pay any attention to, or plan any kind of continuity between the start and end of the Arrancar arc, so it seems silly to go to all this trouble just to come to a very obvious conclusion, but I figured that so long as I got this all here in front of me I might as well show the work on that equation for once.
==============================================
Also, before we end, a notable detail in this scene: It’s the first time we see Aizen’s fortress of Los Noches, although it hasn’t been named yet.  And although it has tiled floors and Aizen’s big blocky throne atop a sheer wall, the Arrancar appear to be situated on a naturally occurring rocky surface like a cliff.  And the establishing shots here and elsewhere seem to suggest an open air structure, rather than an enclosed building like what Ichigo & co. would eventually invade.
Tumblr media
On the one hand this may have just been a change in design on Kubo’s part, as much of the Arrancar as seen in these early phases would later be changed and tweaked, but it’s also possible that this is showing that Los Noches was only recently constructed, basically being built entirely from the ground up in the course of the month or two between Aizen’s retreat into Hueco Mundo with the Menos Grande at the end of the Soul Society arc and the eventual storm of the completed fortress.
When Grimmjow returns from Karakura town alone, Aizen’s throne room has already changed noticeably: The rocks have been cleared from in front of his throne, there are new walls and broad pillars where there used to be just narrow rods and draped cloth.  Also the vague shadowy backdrop that seemed to imply an open sky is gone, and there is now a ceiling, plus nearby structures clearly establish that the throne room is indoors now.

6, 23, 46, 51, please. and welcome back!
ただいま!/ Tadaima! *hearts*
This fanfic meme. Warning: long answers!
6. List your OTP from each fandom you’ve been involved in.
I guess I should take “involved in” to mean “at least moderately obsessed at some point”? haha. Cos there’s maybe only 1-2 fandoms that I’ve actively contributed to, ever...
In no particular order:
Shingeki no Kyojin: RivaMika (Levi x Mikasa) (as if you can’t tell that from my blog)
Wotakoi: KabaHana (Kabakura x Koyanagi)
Psycho-Pass: GinoAka (Ginoza x Akane)
Toshokan Sensou / Library Wars: DoIku (Dojo x Kasahara)
SAO: KiriAsu (Kirito x Asuna)
Naruto: SasuSaku (Sasuke x Sakura)
Bleach (before it completely went down the drain after arc 2): IchiRuki (Ichigo x Rukia)
And though I’m not seriously into BL, I’m apparently hiding a secret fujo somewhere(?) because I also ship:
Yuuutsu na Asa: Akihito x Katsuragi
Yami no Matsuei: Tsuzuki x Hisoka (reversible)
Saiyuuki: Hakkai x Gojyo (+ their past incarnations & reversible)
Haikyuu: KageHina (Kageyama x Hinata)
I swear there’s a pattern here... it seems I am irresistibly attracted to characters who have serious difficulties expressing their emotions and I like a lot of pain in my relationships...
23. Name a fic you’ve written that you’re especially fond of & explain why you like it.
Gotta be Red Velvet Cake.
Because it’s just... bizarre hahaha. I mean, who literally puts a frosting recipe in the middle of a fic? I went crazy with that piece. It was for a Valentine’s Day prompt challenge to boot... I seriously wanted to trap/shock everyone with a totally unexpected, really DARK story that turned out to be nothing like what the title suggested.
I completely blame this little fic misadventure on all the Gothic/post-modern lit studies I did in school; that module wrecked my psyche permanently. And in true post-modern style, I went all fragmented stream-of-consciousness with it, stirred in a totally unreliable narrator and sprinkled it with a dash of retro pop culture references. It was so much fun to write. And even more fun to see how people reacted to it lol.
Gosh. Talking about it makes my muse all excited. I must try another one of these bad boys one day. Heh.
46. If someone was to read one of your fanfics, which fic would you recommend to them and why?
Definitely The Endgame (hey, I took this title LONG before the last Avengers movie was a thing ok). I consider this one of my best pieces of writing to date, though it’s not really popular amongst my readers (sigh. universal truths.).
This piece is DENSE in imagery and references. (might even argue a little TOO dense; it’s teetering on that fine line between intellectual and overly affected). I did a heck of a lot of research on chess gambits for this one too, which was tough to get right because I’m not actually a chess player.
Special mention of @fuku-shuu and @magikarp-diem-blog because they started all the chess prompt nonsense. (good times. where are you guys? I miss my old tumblr fam :( but I shouldn’t talk cos I was the first one to go AWOL.....)
51. Rant or Gush about one thing you love or hate in the world of fanfiction! Go!
Er... can I have 3? and they’re all going to be negatives because I’m just a natural critic =P
I hate self-inserts with a passion. I just cannot get into the fic when every other line is screaming “you! reader! yes you! this is YOUR fantasy! let me fanservice you in most plastic way possible!”
The second thing I (honestly) hate is how much really bad fic there is out there. Like you have to go through 20 or more terrible fics to find just one really really good one. (or maybe I’m just searching the wrong way, or using the wrong platform). Ratings/likes don’t necessarily mean anything. Sometimes I really want to read fic, but I get so tired of trying to find that one passable piece that I just give up.
The third thing I hate is WRITING FIC SUMMARIES. Like I’ve spent so much energy getting the ACTUAL fic right, and then I have to condense it to something that will fully convey how interesting the fic is, and yet not give too much away. I know it’s important to hook a potential reader in, but I feel like a fraud when I have to write a summary for my own fic lol.
