ok that line hits
also, surprisingly, my favorite character dynamics so far this season are tagon + tanya + taealha trying to dance around the powder keg they've collaboratively built together

Hi! So! I just finished Arthdal Chronicles and I have lost my entire mind over Saya! It's really bad! Here I come bearing gifs.

I ship Tagon and Taealha so much. They fight for control and power within the marriage but also when their kid gets kidnapped, he goes psycho slaughtering anyone in the way but she also loses it because she worries that as he went alone (per kidnapper order) he might get killed and rides after him! And then sees he's bleeding (and his purple blood is a giveaway he's Igutu so populace won't just overthrow him, they'd probably murder him on the spot) and she refuses to have him continue with the rescue tho she loves her child and the child is a path to power to boot. AAAA
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I love her!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And she is all, I will go fight a whole armed mob for our son, you stay and don't come out aaaaaa!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
She kills a metric ton of people but eventually she's surrounded and about to be killed and Tagon, a man who is obsessed about ruling, a bona fide bad guy, someone who was actually plotting to strip her influence away, who actually is of an age where he can easily take another wife and make more kids, comes out his kingship and life ending secret be damned, because he will not let her or their son die.

Cat's out the bag...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They may be monsters but monsters with family values :)
Tumblr media
They (and Eunsom who arrives soon) slaughter everyone but then the army arrives and the secret it out...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tanya to the rescue! I loved that she did what Eunsom said she would not be able to - about Igutu.

I want to celebrate the end of ARTHDAL CHRONICLES s2 with a little note on Taealha, my favourite female character in all of kdrama so far.
I don't usually love girlbosses, and I normally wouldn't cheer to see one of the main antagonists of a series escape most of the consequences of her actions. But I loved this for Taealha, and I've been thinking hard about why this is.
What I think it boils down to is this: Taealha is an antagonist. But she's not a villain. And this speaks to one of the main themes I'm seeing in Asian dramas.
While an antagonist is any character who opposes the protagonists of a story, a villain is a character who is outright evil. Unusually for a character who's pitted against very idealistic heroes, Taealha isn't a villain, even though she helps to rule and uphold a desperately evil society. The show's morality is more white-and-grey than black-and-grey, in the manner of most Western grimdark fantasy. I think that Asian drama generally views systemic change through a different lens than Western drama. In Asian drama, it is the rare heroic characters - like Tanya and Eunseom - who have the courage and vision to imagine a world that is any better than the one they inhabit. While Western storytelling sees injustice often as the action of an individual villain, Eastern storytelling sees injustice as the grinding of an impersonal social machine in which those who prop up the status quo are often as helplessly imprisoned within the system as those they rule over. Their fault may not be active malice, so much as the lack of vision, courage, and selfless compassion to fight for a better world.
I think this also has something to do with why so many people in the West have trouble with the concept of systemic injustice - they think that evil in society must be the work of a few bad actors, a few individual villains, rather than of a whole social order. I also note that in Eastern drama, especially in the shows which are more conscious of social justice (like SCARLET HEART RYEO and ARTHDAL CHRONICLES), the "villain" - insofar as there is one to pit against the idealistic heroes - is society at large. In many western dramas, on the other hand, it's clear the writers desperately want to believe that society at large is good; that collective action is only ever a force for justice and never for evil.
Despite being an antagonist opposing idealistic heroes, Taealha is able to be sympathetically portrayed because she, like everyone else, is caught between the gears of a cruel society. She may be rich, beautiful, deadly, and the heiress to a great lord, but in all her privilege she, too, is subject to the machinations of her father, of the king, and of Tagon, the man she loves. She is also not the only source of evil in the show - which makes it very, very clear that the evil in Arthdal stems from every ordinary citizen who profits from slavery and engages in war. Taealha opposes Eunseom and Tanya, but she does not do so out of a desire to cause or profit from suffering. Rather, Taealha is a pragmatist whose lack of faith in the gods leads her to seek survival by working with the system rather than destroying it according to the divine will. What makes her sympathetic is that her motivation is always to protect the people she loves: Tagon and, later, Arok. In protecting her loved ones, Taealha only wants the same thing as Tanya and Eunseom - but because she has no faith in something greater than either herself or society, she chooses not to try to change the system, but to beat the system at its own game. If she's cruel, it's only because she's trapped in a cruel system; she's still doing her best.
Taealha is no worse than anyone else in the show. She simply fails to be better - and that's a big part of why we can still love her and cheer her on, even though she's one of the main antagonists.

004-✼ Notice
As I returned to the Kingdom before my Sacred Trial, I wish to inform Arthdal's loyal subjects of the following:
⭐ The upcoming Ministers' luncheon at the Palace - An audience with King Tagon and Queen Taealha as they share an important announcement that may change Arthdal.
⭐ The prevalent military presence in various parts of Arth - Arthdal wouldn't be as it is without it's other territories, the journey continues for a rebirth of a country we always hoped for.
⭐ The Merchant's Hour at the Great Shrine - Tanya Niruha wanted to invite all merchants to visit the Shrine for an audience, afterwards she will bestow her blessing to each merchant.
We hope these matters would enlighten your faith to the great nation.

Arthdal Chronicles (Part 1)
Tumblr media
Human greed that destroys innocence and harmony among different tribes and Neanthals. Destruction, slavery and death. . .
The Arthdal Union is made up of four tribes that understood that in strength is in the coming together for a common goal. These tribes are: Daekan tribe led by Sanung (the greediest of all leaders), White Mountain tribe led by Asa Ron (the religious leader), Hae tribe led by Mihol who holds the key to building arms and other useful objects, and the Bachidoore represented by Hae Rim, who - together with his family - who was a doctor.
The story begins on the night when Arthdal leaders ask the Naenthals (who are very strong and fast) to become part of the union. These people were feared among the people of all human tribes, but they were peaceful beings who only used violence to defend themselves. And the night they refuse, is the night Sanung orders his army to kill all Naenthals. Asa Hon, finds herself among the Naenthals when the destruction begins and she helps Ragaz save one of the Naenthal children, while Daekan army murders everyone in sight.
On the night Asa Hon has Ragaz's twin sons, Tanya was being born in Lark by the priestess and leader of the Wahan tribe. These three children have different paths all connected by their fate. . .
It is heartbreaking and frustrating to see how greed brings so much pain to the victim of those who become blinded by this insatiable desire to possess all. Sanung, Asa Ron and Mihol were constantly stabbing each other on the back in the cold war they had in order to have power over the Union. Sanung had the strongest army, and he used his son, Tagon as a weapon, destroying tribes, and taking peaceful people away from their homes to make them slaves. Meanwhile, Mihol uses his daughter, Taealha, as spy against Tagon and Sanung.
But mistreated children rebel against their parents and Tagon and Taealha hold on to each other and their love as they fight against their fathers and destroy the union to form a kingdom they can rule over. By the end of this part of the chronicle we see the transformation of these two characters: Tagon, who wanted to be loved by his people and who wanted to rule in a peaceful way, becomes a tyrant, feared by his people. Taealha, who was always calculating her next step, gave her all for Tagon, only to resent him for not sharing his power and going behind her back.
But these two would not had been able to accomplish this rebellion if they hadn't used Tanya who gave into her true path as priestess, Saya who was separated from his parents and grew as Tagon's son, and Eunseom, who in his efforts to save his people from slavery captured Sanung, giving Tagon the opportunity to kill his father.
We also see the transformation of these three young people as they become entangled in the Arthdal political struggle in their desire to save themselves and the people they love.
I liked how the story explores the creation of empires through conquering, destruction and slavery. It also presents the pain and negative side of fear as it blindly kills the Other because of their differences. The need to hide who they really are can also trigger the need to destruct blindly.
I loved the series and will start watching the second part this weekend.

Arthdal Chronicles Season 1 (2019) Review
Tumblr media
As I watched and eventually finished this season, the only thought that came to my mind was, "This was so epic! Why did I not watched this during its run?" But well 2 reasons: 1) most certainly not in the mood for this genre, 2) perhaps my prejudice also played at that time because of the news surrounding the personal lives of the main actors in the drama.
The world building of this drama was commendable. From Iark to Arth, the people that populates each places, and the beliefs and prophecies. It was epic. Kudos to the team behind this epic drama!
Tagon and Taealha make a very compelling pair. I can't fully categorize them as villain as both were just flawed people who happens to have a deeper reason of why they became the person they are now. They tried to be better but the world isn't ready (or more like scared) on what they could offer.
Eunseom and Tanya was rather idealistic compared to them but I still commend them for being able to adapt to the realities they faced outside Iark. It was heartbreaking to witness how each of the teachings they grew up learning were being squashed as they faced suffering in Arth.
Lastly, Saya. I do get where his actions are coming from. But for some reason, I can't connect with him that much. Song Joong Ki's portrayal of the twins was commendable tho. He was able to portray two contrasting characters.
Like I said earlier, this season was enjoyable for the epicness it has offered. Some plot arcs could've been given more focus and some could have been shorten to be able to utilize the 18 episode run. Overall, it was off to a start. :)
PS. I'm just sad with some character changes in the next season but looking forward to its sequel

Arthdal Chronicles Season 3
Tumblr media
Arthdal Chronicles, a fantasy drama airing on tvN, has garnered widespread acclaim across all demographics. Set in the mythical land of Arth during the Bronze Age, the series has entranced viewers with its gripping narrative and compelling characters. As the saga unfolds, viewers have eagerly awaited the fulfillment of prophecies and the resolution of power struggles that shape the fate of Arth.
Unveiling Arthdal: Myth and Reality
Loosely based on the legendary lore of Dangun, the founder of the first Korean Kingdom of Gojoseon, Arthdal Chronicles transports viewers to the ancient capital of Asadal. The narrative begins with a focus on power dynamics and the repercussions of prophecy. As characters like Tagon ascend to kingship, the series delves into themes of ambition, identity, and redemption through the journeys of characters like Eunseom.
Season 3: Renewal Rumors and Speculations
Despite the conclusion of the conflict between Tagon and Eunseom in Season 2, speculation abounds regarding the possibility of a third season. While tvN has not officially renewed the series, its popularity among global audiences suggests a strong likelihood of continuation. However, fluctuating viewership numbers and the perceived conclusion of major storylines pose uncertainties.
Cast Farewells and Future Possibilities
As the second season concluded, cast members bid emotional farewells, hinting at the possibility of closure for the series. However, the unresolved fates of characters like Saya and Taealha leave room for speculation. Their ambitions and unresolved conflicts suggest that the story of Arthdal may not be over yet, teasing the potential for a new chapter in the saga.
A Door Ajar: The Cliffhanger and Beyond
The Season 2 finale of Arthdal Chronicles sets the stage for future conflicts and resolutions. While Tanya and Eunseom find closure in their arcs, lingering threats and unfinished business beckon towards a continuation. With Saya's vow of revenge and Taealha's ominous preparations, the cliffhanger hints at a new chapter waiting to unfold, potentially paving the way for Arthdal Chronicles Season 3.

Asian male leads that went against the norms and redefined thirst traps for you?
For me it was lee joon gi from flower of evil! Who is the genius tell me!!! That decided to make this meticulous, detail oriented crafty man who is painted as a violent sociopath but turns out to be a huuuuuge softie in need of love and just wants to make his family happy and get some cuddles and stuff
my brain's a little too fuzzy right now so idk about going against the norms, but here's some favorite Characters That Are Just Hot
ma dong seok as yoon sang hwa | train to busan
Tumblr media
he loves his wife and unborn baby. he wears a fancy lil scarf. he'll punch you into the roof of a train car. the sheer bruhery of this guy.
jang hyuk as park gye won | bloody heart
Tumblr media
look this whole post could just be jang hyuk characters (his character in chuno i think is the quintessential definition of a thirst trap), but this character gets a special shout-out because he works the least sexiest outfit of Royal Minister for the duration of the drama and also the atrocities??
wi ha joon as choi do il | little women
Tumblr media
the clown wigs i wore throughout this entire drama because of this guy. sort of like a human trojan horse but snaccify it. being toxic in his little outfits 10/10
chen kun as ning yi | the rise of phoenixes
Tumblr media
mansplain. manipulate. malewife. "chen kun with long hair" is a Movement.
shin sung rok as kim seo jin | kairos
Tumblr media
when you like them flawed and morally ambiguous and in desperate need of a divorce. "i can fix him" but if fixing him required you to probably stab someone in an infinite time loop down the road
shin ha kyun as lee dong sik | beyond evil
Tumblr media
he's done nothing wrong in his entire life except for perhaps inspiring the thousands of morally ambiguous daddy complexes that emerged from this drama
BONUS! some ladies
ha ji won as sung nyang | empress ki
Tumblr media
she'll get your whole family killed and ruin your career and you'll thank her for it
lee si young as seo yi kyung | sweet home
Tumblr media
ma'am.
kim ok bin as taealha | arthdal chronicles
Tumblr media
she's scary (appreciative)
