Next Goal Wins - Our Flag Wins

Last night I watched Next Goal Wins (as part of a Watch Party). It was lovely to see all those familiar faces: David Fane, Rachel House, Will Arnet, and Rhys Darby (of course). Not forgetting Taika himself. It’s a reminder that our pirates are going to work together again in the future, because, like a travelling troupe of actors, that is what they do.

There are lots of elements of the story that have parallels with Our Flag. A group of seemingly incompetent pirates/football players who prove themselves to be adequate. Found family. And beautiful scenery.

I particularly love the way that everyone is so accepting of Jaiyah Saelua because fa'afafine is a recognised gender role in Samoan culture. Just as Jim is accepted by the Revenge. (I had no idea she was actually a footballer in the American Samoa team. I literally knew nothing about this film.)

The end credit scene with Reverand Taika will stay with me though. His words are particularly pertinent right now:

“When the going gets tough and the chips are down. When you feel like you can’t carry on and you feel like there’s no hope, or you just can’t do it, anything can happen and a whole lot of miracles when you just have a little bit of faith.”

I’m really worried that Thor: Love and Thunder is going to sideline Valkyrie since Jane is returning as Thor’s supposed love interest.  I’m all for bisexual representation (it’s Disney so it won’t be much), but Tessa and Chris Hemsworth had fantastic chemistry in Thor: Ragnarok, and it’s disappointing they’re not capitalizing on that.  Also, Jane Foster is one of the most useless characters in the MCU (yes, I know how her being Thor in the comics) and also the most miscast.

If her storyline is put on the back burner, I’m fighting Kevin Feige and Taika Waititi.
