Schloss Einstein Folge 1067
Let's go autistic besties!
SIMON LASS AVA ENDLICH IN RUHE! Die braucht bald ne einstweilige Verfügung gegen ihn.
Simon, Ava trägt ein Hemd in den Farben der Lesbian Pride Flag. Take a hint.
JOEL!
Go Joshi! Go Joshi!
Justice for Joshua!
SIMON DU ARSCHLOCH!
Tumblr media
Joshi Lore: Er mag keinen Käse.
PATRICK DU ARSCHLOCH! ER HAT DAS VIDEO ÜBERALL GETEILT!
Ava, Sweetie, I'm so sorry!
Bin jetzt offiziell #1 Simon Hater.

I had such a good time. I'm dumping my thoughts behind the readmore.
Everyone was fantastic, I was really curious to hear Rob Fowler as the new von Krolock and Anja Backus as Magda live especially.
The stage in Hamburg appeared a bit narrow compared to what I've seen online from other shows, I was a bit nervous with all the capes flying around during Rote Stiefel. During Einladung zum Ball Krolock's cape caught on the door to Alfred and Abronsius' room, but it was a quick fix with a tug lol.
I was actually really amazed Sarah took Krolock's hand towards the end of Einladung zum Ball and started to rise out of the bath. And during Totale Finsternis she went in for a kiss (that didn't happen) but holy shit, this Sarah was on it.
I really enjoyed Alfred, but it only just hit me how jarring it is to have Für Sarah right before Die Gruft. One song is about how brave he'll be, but the other how he's scared. Sure you can play it off as funny and ironic, but it tripped me up a bit this time round. It was so charming to hear Für Sarah live. And bless Vincent Van Gorp for having to crawl back on stage again during Tanzsaal to grab Abronsius' helmet he needs for the quick change.
I was trying to keep my eyes on 5 different characters during Tanzsaal, I think I missed Herbert doing something to the Vampire in the blue wig's sleeves. >.< I enjoyed this Herbert. I was a bit nervous because my mother was with me and I don't quite know her opinions, but imo this Herbert was not as giggly as some I had seen in recordings and so Wenn Liebe In Dir Ist seemed less as a joke. I know we as a fandom love Herbert and you may have a different opinion, but the whole 'make the bite attempt look like SA' as the punchline of the scene and whatever Chagal and Magda have going on are the things I warn people about when I recommend the musical.
I also liked this less screechy Abronsius. I thought the sound system could have done his fast songs more justice and it's a shame that this version of the musical doesn't have Abronsius call for Alfred at the very end any more. I love the Finale, but it kicked in so suddenly I missed some of the callback to the beginning of the musical and the tragedy of it a bit.
My mother had clocked that Sarah's family was Jewish with the Menorah during Das Gebet but she asked me if it was a recent addition. I was glad I had looked into it once. As far as I understand it, Roman Polanski (who is Jewish, that's the only thing I am focusing on here) had written 'Fearless Vampire Killers' to get back at Vampire Stories being based on antisemitic stereotypes. The Satire being that Chagal was actually Jewish this time. You want a Jewish Vampire? You're getting one, that kind of attitude. I read that the film was even supposed to have a scene in it where Chagal couldn't have his coffin in the graveyard with the other vampires because he was Jewish. Even as a Vampire he would still face antisemitism, to hold a mirror up to the vampire genre, but this was deemed too controversial by the the editors or someone and it was cut out of the film (which I have never watched, btw. Didn't really want to give Polanski more of my time than I had to, because of the Reasons). So my theory is that Magda and Chagal get pushed into the crypt in a wooden box as an allusion to this cut scene. But yes, in short, the Chagal family have always been Jewish. Whether or not Tanz der Vampire succeeds in being satirical or not I cannot judge for sure. (I had the compulsion to look all of this up because Chagal singing about it's totally OK sucking other people's blood worried me... I wanted to know what place this was coming from)
I was happy that Magda and Chagal got to sing some of the "Was ist dabei..." at the end if Geil Zu Sein ist Komisch outside of the coffin as well. It gave the performers a bit more time visible on stage.
One thing I thought was a bit of a shame was that the mirrors for Wenn Liebe in Dir Ist were rather narrow and in parts obscured by a column so that it was really hard to notice the dance double playing the reflection. We were also sat right in the middle of a row looking straight ahead to the stage. I don't think my mother noticed the dance doubles in Tanzsaal, either. I knew to look out for them, but it wasn't easy to see from the middle.
Sitting right at the back we also got the full blast of the flash lighting that happened during Einladung zum Ball, Carpe Noctem, and the second Finale. It was really unpleasant. If you are light sensitive, I'm afraid this would ruin your visit to the show. I don't know how it is in other areas of seating, but it's worth asking about if you ever do want to see it and are photosensitive in any way.
I had briefed my mother beforehand that the melody she was going to hear was Total Eclipse of the Heart because I didn't want her to be thinking and wondering where she had heard it before and be distracted from taking in the show or nudging me to say what the song is.
EDIT: I just remembered, the switch from Sarah to dance double Sarah in Rote Stiefel in this Hamburg production is a magic trick. All of a sudden there were two Sarahs and I don't even know where she came from. Super cool.
I think I mentioned everything I wanted to dump down soon after seeing it.
Oh wait, I am so glad I got to see Carpe Noctem live. Black Vampire my beloved. Grateful the dancers seem to be able to freestyle to some degree. Andrea Giola didn't do that jump where Black Vampire does the splits in mid air, and I'm grateful because otherwise my mother might have brought up when I used to do gymnastics XD
Made a shirt for going, btw. Didn't quite finish, but it was wearable ^^;;
Tumblr media
Actually, I'm just going to add this thought here too while I'm at it: I'm just so enamoured by the fact that not all performers in a musical are native speakers and will learn the songs for their role in a language that is not necessarily known to them. When I was little, I was told if I want to do anything with languages I should become a translator and my mother kept talking about politics, being an ambassador, etc. But even now I never felt that kind of job is me. I'm not saying a musical performer's job is easy, it's very demanding and takes incredible dedication, but I'm a bit sad no one ever highlighted the language aspect to me. When Drew Sarich mentions in interviews he was sent to Germany with nothing but a lead role and a language coach and now I feel like his German sounds cleaner than mine, or Ivan Ozoghin says he only had two weeks to learn the German versions for Krolock, I'm still so impressed even though I will also learn Japanese songs I like by heart like the little weeb I am. What I am trying to say is: the arts also have space and reasons to learn another language, the musical industry is more international than I had ever thought it was, and there is more to "I want to do something with languages when I grow up" than being corporate. I now have a 9-5 office job that has nothing to do with languages, but sometimes I do wonder what turns my life could have had if my parents didn't have this vision of me in a business suit.

Thank you for the video! A very astute analysis of the show’s change over the years, and how marketing played into it. As someone who has been seeing TdV on and off for fifteen years now (but mostly Hungarian-Viennese-Russian branch), it really did strike me when I saw it again after a long pandemic break a few days just how “predatory gay” trope the Herbert scene is. I guess the world was a bit different back when I was in my teens, and we were just happy to get *any* overt representation there, but that bit didn’t age well, and there sure seems to be little point to Herbert in the show at all.
That said, I always saw this as a complex story about hedonism and human nature without a protagonist, or, rather, letting the audience pick the protagonist, which is not always a bad thing. My main qualm with the show going against the theme of freedom is how passive Sarah is during the escape. For a girl who is more of less defined by agency, who manipulates so skillfully, she sure does not have much agency during the ballroom sequence. Her wants are so clear throughout (*translation dependent), but are completely absent in that moment.
Anyway, please do more videos. I am *very* curious to hear your thoughts on SE.
At the risk of going into a ramble...
When I was a youngish teenager, a group leader at a summer camp I went to sang Totale Finsternis and mentioned it was from a musical, which piqued my interest. I watched some clips from Youtube and they didn't really hold my interest at first, not at all... not before I came across what was probably this video. And then this one. And then this. I didn't speak any German at that point but I was so intrigued (as someone who loved musicals, was obsessed with fanfic and absolutely devastated at the lack of canon lgbtq rep in the types of historical/goth mainstream media I liked - it was 2016). So it's literally Wenn Liebe that originally got me into the show, even though my views on it have done a complete 180 after I grew up and started to look at what was actually going on ajfkkslf. I still think that some of the portrayals are a bit less... well, cruel - Máté Kamarás' Herbert is very earnest for the most part, which makes the portrayal feel more genuine, like the character is more than a parody, even just a little bit.
But it's still an uncomfortable scene and it's uncomfortable that the fandom reaction to it is so overwhelmingly positive even now 😅 Canon divergent fanfic is one thing (I definitely know the feeling of being so starved for lgbtq rep that you just rewrite the story to be able to have a ship), but a lot of people's takes even for the canon show amount to "he secretly likes it", which... 😭 My take still is that a lot of people ship it just to get Alfred out of the way of Krolock x Sarah. And that's annoying ahfkdk, where are the Alfred x Krolock x Sarah fics (Krolock isn't my favourite character but like, that has more canonical basis than alfbert lol)
I agree that Sarah just completely loses her agency for post-bite Tanzsaal, which is a somewhat odd choice! And I think a hedonism reading of the story is really interesting and checks out - in my video I mostly skipped over Chagal and Magda because it's a Can of Worms, but they definitely reinforce the idea that it's the central theme.
Thank you so much for the compliments and the ask!!! :D
Ajfkfk I must admit that I don't get what SE means in this context 😁😁 feel free to educate me in the notes!

The thing about the end of Tanzsaal is why does the candlestick cross work. Krolock has to have come across crosses in the wild before; the Chagal's house has paned windows and he gets in there fine, so is it intention; does Alfred or the professor believing it will work make it work? Or does a cross not working on Chagal because he's a Jewish vampire but working on Krolock mean that Krolock's a Christian vampire? Still, after 400 years of living undead? Does the cross work because of Alfred and the professor's beliefs or Krolock's?? And it makes the castle fall down, is the castle only standing because of Krolock?

Tdv day the last. I sat next to an absolute fuckwit who kept talking today, but ive already complained about him at length to a friend, so heres all the things i liked, because thats more worth of remembering: sarah hatten wir heute eine zweitbesetzung, und sie war gut! (Thats the thing - imo theres krolock, and then theres borchert-singt-krolock, and the latter is also very very good, but its not exactly krolock. There are some parts of the play where you are very likely to encounter borchert-singt-krolock, wie unstillbare gier, das sehr oft außerhalb des musicals gesungen wird, und diese eine stelle in tanzsaal. However, every krolock who isnt borchert is, to me, automatically x-sings-krolock. And they are very often excellent! But thats not krolock.)
I still fucking miss alfred and sarah and krolock during the finale, its just kind of sad when they arent there. Just do a quuckchange and throw em out on the stage, wenns in wien funktioniert muss es ja auch in deutschland gehen!! But i had such a good time, and im so glad i got to go again, and now im going to go rewatch that one bootleg of 2010 vienna that definitely doesnt exist bc those things are illegal, because god, i love this musical so much

Dirty Dancing, bitte.
Motiv? Eifersucht. Frage ist nur, auf Rainer oder Leo.“
„Ach fick dich doch, Baumann.“
Sie grinste lange und ausgiebig. „Oha. Ins Schwarze getroffen also.“

Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cast change! You could tell everyone was running on high emotions and it was the second show, still fantastic just a little more dampened than the first show and i cant blame them. Spirits were still high on stage and audience, plenty of cheering for the stunning members of the cast that were leaving. It was so amazing to be able to support the artists on their last night especially when they all were so kind throughout the week!
Everything was fantastic and so well done, i got to see my favorite ensemble costume with Annis as she was there that evening!
Also spotted some new wigs, darker one for sarah and for our lovely black vampire a wig with quite a bit of grey in the front. Assuming with that our next krolock is going to be more grey.
Many a tear was shed on stage including by filippo, i was close enough to tell, all through tanzsaal, which, with everything he’s put into the show i cant see anything but a very dedicated artist. I’m so glad i was able to see him as many times as i did, meet him, and see his last show, truly one of my favorite krolocks and completely different than any other in a way that gives such joy to the character.
Stage door was a lot of fun once again, lots of people, I ended up turned around right into Annis and got a high from her, and Laura found me to ask to see my Sarah dress again which was so sweet.
Also completely different note, Got some quick food before the second show and Mathias was there literally at the table next to us. @think-of-lotte said hi since she likes his phantom and thats how it got decided we’re also going to see him on wednesday! So one more tanz update to come! Also she got us a backstage tour so I’ll comment on that as well!
