🕸️ Pretty Girls Make Graves 🕸️
Eddie x Pencils - 🎃 Halloween 🎃one shot
2.7k words
Summary: pretty much what it says on the tin. Halloween one shot with our dearest Eddie x Pencils. Enjoy. Pure fluff. A tiny suggestion of smut at the end. Inspired by this lovely photo set & this prompt post that got me off my ass to write again.
Also another shoutout to the gorgeous @tvserie-s-world who made this amazing Eddie x Pencils edit that I’m still gooey over. 🖤
“So, what brings you to my dark and creepy neck of the woods?”Came a cocky taunt as soon as the trailer door swung open after your knock.
It’s usual rusty-screeching melody preceding its occupants flirty remark. The sound of the Smiths comes slithering out the creaking door behind him. The tape you bought that got lost in the avalanche of both your cassettes that slide and slip, congregate on his passenger seat.
He will not smile for anyone. And pretty girls make graves.
The lanky shadow of your boyfriend cuts across the warm yellow glow of the lights that slant out the doorway behind him. His costume makes you grin. Sheer moronic love.
You stood halfway up the steps. Candles flickering and throwing dozy pools orange in Jack-o-lanterns across the toes of your boots. They’re all wonky and have imperfect slanted mouths and jagged eyes. Loping together on the uneven porch steps. Fat orange gourds all drunk with gravity.
The very same pumpkins you’d helped him carve a week ago, after a misty morning weekend trip to Merill’s pumpkin farm. Eddie had the rather dastardly and determined habit of choosing pumpkins bigger and heavier than his actual van tires. You ended up with so many.
Your kitchen has smelt like squelchy pumpkin innards all week. You’re still finding seeds cropping up under the toaster or in the corner of the cabinets. As per Eddie’s way with most things, It wasn’t exactly a neat process.
You can’t help but laugh at his greeting too.
“I distinctly remember making plans to invade the spooky neck of your woods tonight, my little death trap.” You smile as you edge your way up the sloping steps. Holding a huge pumpkin shaped bucket of candy in your arms. The contents rustle as you move.
Everyone’s touting pumpkin buckets tonight. Driving in and even on the street back home, you saw a load of elementary kids walking around the park in their costumes. Ghosts in bedsheets. Aliens. Bats. One very ambitious papier maché pumpkin. Superhero’s. Clowns. Home made astronauts clad in crinkly tin foil and bulbous helmets. All wandering with an adult in tow and buckets clutched in their hands, ready to be filled.
You opted for a simple witch costume. Stripy tights and your dark thrifted docs. A black dress with a little cape tied around your shoulders and a witches hat. You applied dark purple-plum lipstick and dark smudgey grey eyeshadow, and liner. Your eyelids glitter like purple constellations. He finds stars to gaze at so often in those pretty eyes.
Eddie had gone for an Alice Cooper inspired look. Top hat. The dripping dark eye makeup that you’re amazed he managed all on his own. Hair it’s usual long rocker mess. Gothic black and lots of it. A huge goth belt with studs and buckles. You spy a cane grasped by his side too. A fake toy snake looped around his neck. Just like the man himself. He really does go all out.
The fringe benefit being he looks hot as hell to your eyes.
“You’ve got me under your spell, O’ bewitching one. How could I possibly resist.” He opened his arms out to you as you came to the last step.
“Bet you say that to every witch who shows up at your door on hallows eve.” You smile. Unashamedly grab the snake that’s looped around his neck and reel him in by it.
“Only ones who bought me jolly ranchers.” He preens. He can see the multi coloured hue of the wrapped candy in the huge bowl you’re carrying.
At the same time, he plucks the flimsy pointed witches hat off your head so the brim doesn’t get in his way. You unconsciously move towards the same goal together. It’s spooky. Sometimes it’s like you have the same brain. You’re one entity mashed together in a frenzy of melding hearts, music mania and relentless adolescent infatuation.
He lopes forwards and gladly slots his slanting smirk onto yours. Tasting of orange sweet candy corn and beer. His thumb and forefinger meet on your chin. Your hand slid for his neck. Fingertips along his jaw as you share a giddying kiss. You mouth at the plushness of his lips. He does the same to you.
You pull back before he makes you swoon dangerously down these steps. His kiss should come with a warning sign; dangerously addictive metal head. May possess body and soul.
You can tell already that you’ll have to wave goodbye to this lipstick. It’s now smeared all around your mouth and most of his. Now he looks like Alice Cooper doing nine to ten in Arkham Asylum.
“Hello.” You beam. Rubbing smudged purple off his lips. Vamptastic Plum the colour name.
“Hi.” He smirks like a lunatic. End of his nose rubbing into yours where he gazes at you.
He does it a lot. It’s honestly so lovesick you should be kinda nauseated.
When you’re studying. Watching a movie. Eating popcorn or pizza. Every now and again he’ll just rest his chin in his hand and smile all warm and stupid at you. Cheeks bunched and crows feet at his eyes. Even when you have paint flecked across your forehead. Or pizza cheese slung in a string across your chin. Or when you’re frowning at your fingers when you smear your nail drying polish. He loves watching you just be near him.
It always ends the same way. You’ll feel his eyes burning their fond cinnamon gaze into you. You’ll turn and meet his eyes. And that smile lopes even wider. He’ll loop a pinky though yours and kiss the back of your hand. Or your forehead.
“Permission to enter your lair?” You seek.
“Thought only vamps had to ask permission to come in?” He flirts with you. Eyes on your mouth again. Your lips all kiss bruised makes him ache. In fact, makes another sort of serpent twitch in his jeans.
“Misdirection. I am actually a vampire. The witch outfit is a clever disguise to work my cunning way into unsuspecting trailers.” You raise your brows naughtily.
He grins. “Clever subterfuge.”
He slips aside from the door to let you come in. Another kiss pressed to your lips before he lets you sidle on past him. He hangs your witches hat on the coat rack with his spare jacket and Wayne’s denim.
“Need me to park your broom?” He jests.
“Left it in the car with my black cat. You’re safe.”
“How many more witchy jokes could we stretch this out too?”
“I reckon I’ve a few left knocking around…” you guess. Placing the bucket of candy on the kitchen counter. Hopefully Eddie doesn’t pilfer the whole lot before Wayne’s home. You hope he leaves his uncle a treat or two. And doesn’t scarf the lot like a damn seagull.
This trailer hugs you any time you enter. You thought that when you and Eddie started dating. And you still think it now. Capital H home. This place. Filled with his and Wayne’s memorabilia. And a few more other things tonight;
You haven’t seen your boyfriend as much of late. He’s been out hitting the teenage party circuits with his metal lunchbox. Making a healthy chunk of change by the looks of it. He’s strung up plenty of decorations to help pep this place up with Halloween spirit.
There’s pumpkin paper garlands arced in loops up high. Orange and black twisting streamers over the mug shelves. Fake rubbery bats hanging down from the kitchen island cupboards. Dancing skeletons hanging on the little spare space the walls have to offer. The coffee table is cleared of its usual junk and absolutely heaped in candy and snacks.
Butterfingers. Butter popcorn. Pretzels. Red vines. Cheez balls. Mallomars. All of which happen to be your favourites. He has two cold beers side by side. And a fat tight joint sits waiting in the ashtray too.
He’s even bought those fake filmy cobwebs to spread in a few places with fake plastic spiders - to join in with the real ones dusted around in forgotten corners.
All your tensions melt down right to your toes. All is right with the world. Halloween night. No school tomorrow. And Eddie. And a whole uninterrupted night of movies and bliss. You’ve lost count of the amount of times a movie night has ended up getting dirty on his couch. Tape flicking to the end whilst you’re attached lip to lip with wandering hands.
You sigh gladly as you stand to toe off your shoes. Putting them aside. Heat slides into your stomach all squirly and scorching as he stands from behind you and his hand reach around and skilfully undo the cape around your shoulders.
“Let’s get you comfy my temptress of the night. Beer?” He seeks. Throwing your cape over his shoulder. It lands nowhere even near the coat rack.
“Yes please my lovable nightmare.” You sass. You walk over to the couch. Spying an absolute mound of VHS’s ready to go by the TV. The colour seemed to dip in and out sometimes. The set was old. Eddie had to whack the side sometimes to get it to behave. You find it more endearing than a set that worked seamlessly.
You pluck pieces of popcorn out the bowl and throw them onto your tongue. Crunch them down as you sit with your knees tucked under you.
Eddie kills the music and slings himself down next to you on the lumpy couch. Frame squeaking and rattling as he settles.
“Damn. You got a great selection, Munson. What did you do, bribe Harrington with your soul to score all this?” You remark as you peer at the videos on the coffee table.
1941 Wolfman. Christopher Lee’s Dracula. The Fog. Halloween. House on Haunted Hill. And Friday the 13th. You loved old school movies as much as he did. The old swelling suspense of a good black and white.
“Nothin major. Just a little selling of my body and charms. Deviant sexual acts. Just so you know I’ll have raw knees for a month.”
“Mm you filthy slut.” You hush. Impressed.
“Finest slut in the Midwest.”
“So I’ve heard.” You grin. Leaning in to kiss him. Seemed too infeasible not too. He cups the back of your head as you do. Keeping you close as he dares. Sweet kiss like icing sugar dusted across your lips.
He makes a small ‘mmm’ noise before you pull back.
“Besides. I consider The Fog a film that makes me think fondly of our very early courtship.” He remarks.
Snoopy bed shorts. A tin of Campbells. His lunatic escapades of climbing in your window late at night.
“And, well, only the best for you, Pencils.” He grins.
You tilt your head. A sigh caught in your throat.
“You must’ve busted your ass to get all this. You didn’t need too. You know I don’t need all this. I’m happy just to watch crappy reruns with you and order a pizza.” You tell him.
Concerned about the cash he would’ve laid out for tonight. The decor. The snacks. The primo shit from Rick. All must’ve cost a pretty penny.
“You’re worth every damn cent. When you’re dating a spooky awesome girl you gotta put in the ultimate spooky effort.” He tells you. Gripping his beer bottle and leaning back.
You clink your beer bottle to his.
“Please tell me you overcharged those meathead jocks for your product.”
“…. And then some.” He winks.
That’s my boy. You couldn’t be more proud.
“I’ll drink to that.” You murmur. Taking a pull on your cold beer. Cool heaven sliding down your throat.
“Thanks to Tina’s party last week, I mean, man, I scored big time. So many stoners invited. Walk in the park.” He smiled.
That deserved a kiss. Which you gladly give.
“Kinda love you for that.” You suppose. But there were no two ways about it - you were completly head over heels for him.
“Good to know.” He supplies. Hand rubbing your back.
“We better put a video on before I maul you.” You threaten with a great deal of flirt. Dragging your purple painted fingernails down the front of his top.
“Mmm kinky.” He grins. Leaning over to press a spitty kiss to your cheek. Before diving for the pile of VHS.
“Ok, roughly how long do you wanna argue about which one we watch first?” He seeks.
You narrow your eyes. Taking a sip back of your beer. “Depends if I win or not.” You look at him all cunning.
“House on haunted hill?” He bargains. Crouching and pointing the VHS at you.
“Don’t point that thing at me.” You smile. Stealing another handful of popcorn. Eating it with a grin.
Let the bickering commence…
~
The credits rolled to your third film of the night. Halloween the 1978 original. Orange twinkle lights flicker in the warm yellow lights near the kitchen. The rest of the trailer in dozy darkness. The sounds of kids trick or treating and laughing, batter against the trailer side in the night air.
You magnanimously let him pick the film. Maybe you’re growing soft in your old age.
This found you and Eddie slumped down together on the ratty couch. Limbs tangled. Joint smouldering in the ashtray. Verdant smoke in the air. Beer bottles empty. Only popcorn kernels left in the bottom of the bowl. The snacks had been pilfered and pinched at your leisure.
Eddie was pressed down onto you like a lanky weighted blanket. Snoozing happily with a belly full of beer and cheez balls. Socked feet hanging off the end of the couch. Hands slung all over you like a gangly octopus. He’s currently letting out content little breathy snores with his head cushioned against your boobs. A little spit of drool by the side of his mouth.
He’d nodded off sometime around Michael Myers fifth victim with the boyfriend and the blonde pigtails. You’d been carding your fingers through his hair. Scratching his scalp. Made his eyes flick back in his head.
You swear he was one step away from twitching his foot in contentment like a canine at the work of your hands. Made his brain short circuit.
More so when he was on Indica. Just the kinda hit he needed for a slow sleepy and spooky night in. You can’t deny you’re fighting the effects of it yourself.
A couple of puffs. Eyelids drowsy. Your limbs feeling like cotton stuffed pillows. Indolent and slow. And now you’ve got your perfect metal head keeping you pressed down.
“Guess the party circuit wiped you for six, huh babe?” You smile. Thumbing his cheek. He mumbled something incomprehensible.
You shift your leg up. Which tumbles his knee more into your lap. He snuffled. Nuzzling his head further onto you. His breath was all sugary red vines, and fruity weed.
You kept on stroking his hair. Leaning forward to nuzzle a kiss to the crown of his messy hair. Apple shampoo and that lost tang of American spirits.
“Edward?” You ask.
You get a sleepy, sticky gurgle from him.
“I’ve got a really nice bra and panties set on under this dress, y’know.” You whisper at him.
Another mumble. You smile and rest your cheek on his warm head.
“You’ll have to let me move to put the next movie in, babe.” You tell.
“No. S’comfy.”
Then you hear him grumble. “Boobs.”
“Great boobs.”
You chuckle. Honestly.
“Knock yourself out. Munson. You smile.
Shifting down to let sleep come and gently take you too.
“Oh, and Happy Halloween.” You add. Letting your eyes close. Letting the static at the end of the video ebb you softly into dreams. Along with the sound of wind kindly rattling the roof. Brushing along the walls outside. All the trick or treaters have been coerced indoors. Safe inside with their candy spoils.
Much later on. You hear the rustle of clothes and feel the heat of his breath. The warmth of his limbs leeches off you when he moves. Coldness sneaks in.
You wake with bleary-sticky eyes to those brown ones staring back at you. Cheeks all flushed. The tell-tale sign of a tented zipper bursting at his crotch.
That dripping eye make up looks smeared and downright dangerous. He looks absolutely ravishing and you suddenly shake off your tiredness to see him looking so good like this.
“You said something about a bra, Pencils…” he smiles. “Be a shame not to show it off now-“ He beams. Waggles his brows.
“Heard that did you?” Your brow crooks.
Happy Halloween, indeed.

#31 - 'Love Yourself (1996 demo)' (Love Yourself single, 2019)

The 1996 demo of the song that would later become the stately, endlessly tasteful ‘Love Yourself’ is the earliest recording that we know to exist from Sufjan Stevens. Before Javelin, before ‘Mystery of Love’, before Carrie and Lowell, before ‘Impossible Soul’ and ‘All Delighted People’ and Illinois and ‘Romulus’, before even ‘Rake’ or ‘Happy Birthday’ or ‘Julia’, there was 1996’s ‘Love Yourself’, this chipped, scuffed, rain-beaten and wind-worn minute and sixteen seconds of pure, unmolested song. Welcome, everyone, to the ur-text of Sufjan’s catalogue. Make yourself at home.
If you’re ever hosting a Sufjan trivia night, here’s a fun question for you: excluding live performances and external remixes, which Sufjan Stevens song has the most released versions? Has to be ‘Chicago’, right? Original studio cut, of course, and then the acoustic, adult contemporary and ‘Multiple Personality’ versions on The Avalanche; coupled with the demo version released in 2016, that makes five. If you guessed ‘Chicago’, you’d be right, but only sort of. ‘Chicago’ is tied only with, of all songs, ‘Love Yourself’. Sufjan released three separate demos of ‘Love Yourself’, all developed before the finished song finally escaped his clutches in 2018: one recorded in 1996, one in 1999, and one in 2011(!), around the last leg of the Age of Adz tour. A fifth version, an instrumental reprise of the song on the official 7” single, rounds out the total. No Sufjan song has had such a prolonged gestational period as ‘Love Yourself’. He knew he had something of worth here, and spent over two decades trying – and, until 2018, failing – to make it work.
Most of his solutions to the ‘problem’ of ‘Love Yourself’ were electronic. Taken together, the various versions of ‘Love Yourself’ almost make for an excellent stylistic map of Sufjan’s career, from its earliest folky stages to its older, wizened, electronica-flecked apex (I say ‘almost’ because no versions have been released from his orchestral period in the mid-2000s, if any existed in the first place.) But before that apex could reached – before Sufjan found that most platonically perfect expression of ‘Love Yourself’ in 2018 – there was a college-aged kid, with a guitar and a tape recorder, covering the walls of his dorm room with cushions so his neighbours couldn’t hear him. To show this (no other word for it) insane development of musicianship and personality, Sufjan placed the song’s very first attempt right next to its very last attempt on the official single release. Perhaps the intent was to show continuity (of melody, of lyricism, of instinct), but the overall impression – charmingly, to be clear – is one of a cold, hard rip in time.
One cannot really overemphasise how archaeologically fascinating the existence of this version is. Sufjan, a long-suffering oboist in his youth, first began to learn guitar during his time at Hope College. He became good at it quite quickly, and by his final semester in 1998, Sufjan was ready to record an entire guitar-driven full length debut. 1996, though? The Sufjan of 1996 would have been in his second or third year at Hope and still a newcomer not just to acoustic guitar, but to songwriting, period. Given how much of this era remains unreleased, ‘Love Yourself (1996 Demo)’ is as close as we might ever get to hearing what Sufjan’s truest origins sound like. Every mighty tree was once a sapling; the 1996 four-track version of ‘Love Yourself’ is little more than a newly-sprouted seed. It may very well be one of the first songs he ever wrote.
The element of this version that betrays the most inexperience is the main guitar figure. Far from the busy electronics of later versions, the 1996 demo is centred on an endlessly-looping guitar vamp that breaks only for a small middle-eight. The perpetual swaying motion of the riff, with clearly audible slides up and down the guitar neck, feels harmonically neutral but rhythmically colourful and evocative of a waltz (one of the most significant differences between the initial and final versions of this song is the metre – 2018’s ‘Love Yourself’ is in a martial 4/4, whereas 1996’s ‘Love Yourself’ is in 6/8.) Considering that this riff was probably borne out of necessity – one imagines that a later take on this same arrangement would have included more chords – it is a surprisingly unique figure, one that effectively conveys warmth and soft golden light. Small guitar overdubs add texture, including one left-channel overdub at around fifteen seconds in that glides along with a genuinely pretty counterpoint. Do not confuse youthful simplicity with a bankrupt composition! It’s a song that could not have come from Sufjan at any other point in his life (quite like ‘Jamila’ in that sense.)
Most of the other pieces that would later make up 2018’s ‘Love Yourself’ are here, albeit in a truncated form. The melodic refrain, although sung in a weedy register and modified slightly to fit the 6/8 metre, is nearly identical to future iterations. Its lyrics likewise have the same general thrust, except there are less of them, and they are more repetitive. ‘Love yourself / You are the one thing I needed’ was clearly perfect enough as a mission statement to carry through, unaltered, all the way to 2018. That right there is the main take-away; the rest is noise.
But ‘Love Yourself (1996 Demo)’ has one clear rhetorical difference to the final version. It is a subtle one, but it’s there, and there is an argument to be made that it gives this demo a lyrical edge. There is an urgency of message to the 1996 version that isn’t replicated elsewhere – more insistence, more of a genuine sense of concern and care. Fewer lyrics exist here, but the ones that do are direct and mantra-like: ‘Love yourself,’ ‘Hold yourself’, ‘Change yourself’, ‘Make a shelf’, and, finally, ‘Love myself.’ It is as if Sufjan is legitimising the main message through repetition of structure. He knows it’s a hard conceit to stomach, so he’ll keep saying it until the words begin to sound true. Sincerity through simplicity – with 1990s Sufjan, it’s the name of the game.
There are two moments in particular here that stand out as tangibly different to the final version. The first: ‘Change yourself / Love yourself.’ Obviously the change in question might just be the act of transmuting one’s self-hatred into self-care; richer ways to read the song’s middle eight exist, though. The notion that changing parts of the self is ultimately not possible, and if itis then it’s tantamount to conceding defeat, is a myth. There is something liberating in admitting that certain portions of the tapestry of your character – ego, arrogance, envy, self-consciousness – are not what you want to contain within you. Changing yourself can very well be a path to loving yourself (or, expressed differently, making yourself more loveable.) It’s a surprisingly mature and worldly conclusion for a young man like Sufjan to reach, and seeing it in this early version of ‘Love Yourself’ is a real pleasure. Its omission from the final cut is a tragedy.
The second big difference: the ending. ‘Love Yourself (1996 Demo)’ has a narrative structure that is simple, effective, and not present in the 2018 song. Future versions of ‘Love Yourself’ have their gaze directed entirely outward: this song is an anthem for you, the listener, and nobody else. The 1996 demo is the only rendition to turn that gaze inward, and it does so in the very last lines of the song: ‘Love myself / I am the one thing I needed’. I am a very big fan of this sentiment as the rhetorical climax of the song and am perplexed as to why Sufjan thought to remove it in future versions. The change of address is a classically strong, satisfying narrative moment; it gives the illusion of a defined narrator with their own hopes, fears and need for affirmation. Suddenly the sentiments in ‘Love Yourself’ feel less platitudinous, more personal. Irrespective of all that, ‘Love myself / I am the one thing I needed’ is just a good and true message. We can get so easily caught up in the desire to affirm others that we forget to affirm ourselves. If you believe in everybody’s fundamental goodness and then recuse yourself from that same belief, what’s the use in that? It can only start with you, remember.
There are a good number of Sufjan fans who prefer this tiny, embryonic seed of a ‘Love Yourself’ to the giant, assertive redwood that it would eventually become. I do not consider myself among that group, but I absolutely understand their argument. Every other version of ‘Love Yourself’ feels like a massive (and massively impersonal) rah-rah anthem. It fits the song, to be sure, but embiggening the sound naturally causes the little things to get lost – things like the hug of a good friend, say, or the pleasure of making a small, attainable goal. All those things are contained in ‘Love Yourself (1996 Demo)’, a thoroughly earnest vehicle for sentiments that speak less to the world and more to you. And if that’s what it takes to get the message through, this is the version for you.
Back in a time before Javelin, before ‘Mystery of Love’, before Carrie and Lowell, before ‘Impossible Soul’ and ‘All Delighted People’ and Illinois and ‘Romulus’, before even ‘Rake’ or ‘Happy Birthday’ or ‘Julia’, when the only Sufjan fans were his family and his friends and himself, the phrase ‘love yourself’ might not have meant more – but it certainly meant something different. Something smaller. Something just for you.

never got into vaporwave probably, what projects should i listen to for an introduction??
I always love this question. Finding the best primers to the whole of the vaporwave landscape and introducing new people to them is one of the many things with this genre that I just find so fun. I'm going to try to be as succinct as I can, but I am going to shoutout a lot, specifically twelve, so go ahead and take your time with these.

Macintosh Plus – Floral Shoppe (2011)
The biggest vaporwave album of all time. I will tell you now that this album is by no means perfect, it has quite a mixed reputation among fans & outsiders of the genre, but this is the album to single-handedly define the genre's core ethos in such a highly-concentrated way. If nothing else, this should give you a taste of what inspires and influences the genre most.
Chuck Person's Eccojams Vol. 1 (2010)
By all accounts, this is the very first vaporwave album and to this day, nothing sounds quite like it. A classic array of disorienting, hazy & psychedelic loops of old popular songs that still sound fresh and wholly enveloping.
猫 シ Corp. – HIRAETH (2014)
This one here is to help people gain a better understanding of what your typical standard vaporwave album often sounds like. It's quite varied in a number of subtly different styles & approaches to traditional vaporwave with some ambiance sprinkled in as well.
SAINT PEPSI – Hit Vibes (2013)
Now we're getting into the individual subgenres of vaporwave and while there's a few traditional vaporwave tunes sprinkled in here for variety, this album birthed & defined the genre of future funk with some of the best dance bangers you'll find in the scene. Lots of classy tunes on here, it's an absolute jam.
Blank Banshee – Blank Banshee 0 (2012)
Up to this point, every album I've shared has been intensely sample-based. This album still carries some samples, but it has original beats & synths to establish another subgenre known as vaportrap. It's a great beat tape with some classic tunes and I also recommend its sequel too, which is my favourite vapor album of all time.
ESPRIT 空想 – virtua.zip (2014)
Carrying on from the last album, this one almost doesn't use samples at all and when it does, it's usually an extra sound or instrument at most. I'm putting this here to establish that even basic vaporwave can be crafted from original compositions and the results are short but great.
t e l e p a t h テレパシー能力者 – 現実を超えて (2014)
What makes vaporwave the way it is and not like any other genre adjacent to it is its intensely heavy focuses on atmosphere more than anything else. So naturally, you're going to see a lot of bridges to ambient music. This first example is the subgenre of slushwave, which crafts the same excellent vaporwave tunes, but additionally filters them through such a wash of effects that transform them into psychedelic & blissful dreamscapes.
식료품groceries – 슈퍼마켓Yes! We're Open (2014)
The next subgenre in this vein is mallsoft, which answers the question of vaporwave being set in the tall & wide spaces of shopping centres by placing relaxing tunes in pools of reverb and letting them sprawl from the loudspeakers of the area's corners. This album is the first big one to establish that with a unique setting and gorgeous sample choices.
2814 – 新しい日の誕生 (2015)
The last of these ambient subgenres is dreampunk, which is a lot like vaportrap in that it heavily relies on its own compositions with very few samples while still retaining the genre's focus on nostalgia, this time set in the melancholic & rainy nights of the urban city through what is at least the second biggest album in the entire genre.
death's dynamic shroud – I'll Try Living Like This (2015)
I'm gonna end this list with a few of the genre's weirdest corners. Vaporwave is constantly wide open to new & unique ways of experimentation and this album stands as the best example of that. Wholly unique aesthetic choices, completely innovative sampling techniques and an overall opus of incredibly strange, surreal & psydchedelic soundscapes.
Infinity Frequencies – Computer Death (2013)
After that, I'll close this list with two examples of an abstract subgenre known by two names. They're synonymous to the greater community & world of music, but I see them as two different approaches. They're both defined by the creation of intensely haunting, isolated & eerie loops of mysterious soundbites extracted from the likes of television & radio. Signalwave is what I use to describe the more accessible & musical end of that sound and this start of a trilogy is the best example for it.
░▒▓新しいデラックスライフ▓▒░ – ▣世界から解放され▣ (2012)
On the other hand, I will leave you with what I consider to be the most divisive vaporwave record of all time. This album defines what is more commonly known as broken transmission and it is much more obtuse, glitchy, dark & surreal to listen to depending on the album. You're going to listen to this and either love it, hate it or sit inbetween. People have taken it as a joke while others view it as a work of art. Approach this one at your own discretion.
That's it! Those are the first 12 vaporwave albums that I will almost always recommend every single one of you to check out first. The greater landscape of vaporwave doesn't start & end with these albums, but instead, they give you the best surface level primer to help dip your toes in to such an amazing genre of music.

I have a curious question as a Darkwing Duck fan: Do you prefer the Negaduck backstory where he's an alternate dimension Darkwing Duck trying to take over DW's universe cause he already took over his universe or the one where he's a former Darkwing Duck actor that got pissed off when the company wouldn't hire him for the film and went crazy? (keep in mind I'm only focusing on the backgrounds from the original animated series and the Ducktales Reboot)
Honestly, I think both versions have thier own merit.
As someone who grew up with this:

((Quite literally, too. I still have the old VHS tape do the Justice Ducks episodes that I played repeatedly as a kid because apparently enjoying things on loop is an autistic trait that absolutely NO ONE caught until I was a teenager, but I digress))
I have enjoyed the idea of an alternate version of a hero character that is from another dimension that's literally the same dude as our hero in question, but the main defining feature isn't that they're "evil", but that "What if they didn't have the inhibitions that stopped them from going ham and doing whatever the hell they wanted without caring about the consequences?"
Negaduck in his purest form is just Darkwing without a proactive Launchpad and Gosalyn to rein him in. Personality wise, Negaduck is identical to Darkwing, as they both have the same selfish need for being the center of attention and get frustrated when someone else hogs the spotlight.
They both think highly of thier own skills, and can't stand being made to feel small. At the same time, they both also will go out of thier way to throw someone a bone just because they feel like it, with Darkwing literally having his heart melted the moment he met Gosalyn and Launchpad, and Negaduck actually being a rather fair boss to the rest of the Fearsome ((I will fight you all on that, OG Negaduck actually took good care of the canon universe QuackerJack, Megavolt, Bushroot and Liquidator, and actually paid them. 2011 Comic Negaduck was just an asshole for asshole's sake, and had absolutely no reason ripping up Mr. Banana Brain like that unprompted, nor would he actually have done that in the series proper))
Negaduck is just Darkwing on a bad day. Plain and simple. 😁
Alternately, Jim in DT17 was also a very valid take on Negaduck. I honestly appreciated that they decided to reinvent the character instead of trying to follow the exact same beats, as a rehash. It was refreshing to step out of the "I'm your evil twin from another universe" trope, and give us a real reboot with him while staying true to the core characteristics.

Jim is still a Negaduck at the core. He doesn't like being upstaged, his ego is unchecked, he is viciously protective of what he deemed is his ((such as his fans and identity)), and he's desperate to not have his legacy erased by some new young upstart, as I'm sure he perceived it.
At the same time, Jim also showed that he is a Darkwing at heart.
He did not hesitate to put himself in danger to get Launchpad and Drake out of the way of the explosion, and only realized the danger he was in AFTER he'd cleared the area.
He's still Darkwing at the core too.
So, in short:

Horror and Minecraft
Today I'd like to talk about digital horror and analog horror. Two recent-ish horror trends that I really love, and maybe some other things too.
A couple years ago, I and the world was introduced at large to analog horror, which to my understanding is basically taking things that were nostalgic to those in their 30s and 40s and making them scary.
stuff like VHS tapes and media from those eras. I quite enjoyed that trend. Stuff like the backrooms and the Mandela Catalogue were very interesting to me. I'm not usually a horror guy, but this stuff just intrigued me. But then I was introduced, by Youtuber Sagan Hawkes, to another type of horror, coined as Digital Horror by Sagan himself.
Essentially it takes the concept of analogue horror, and changes the dates from the 90s and very early 2000s, to when I was a child, the early 2000s to the mid 2010s. So basically when Computers started being in almost every home and when children like myself at the time had unfiltered access to them.
Now I'm gonna talk about Minecraft, I promise I'll loop back around to digital horror eventually.
Turns out, the highest selling game ever has a lot of people nostalgic for it, who knew!
I am one of those people. I first played the game in around 2010-2011
I still play it occasionally today.
While I don't know exact hours, it is in all likelihood the game I've played the most.
but I never really found it that scary. Sure the cave noises made me jump every now and again but I never really felt too uneasy playing it.
That was, until I'd heard of Herobrine, and being an impressionable child, I ate that shit up. Nowadays I obviously know it was just an urban legend, but before I knew that I'd make worlds just to search for evidence of him.
I used to watch videos, that while obviously fake now, were real to me back then.
Hell, even when I'd learned he was fake, sometimes I'd play along with people who didn't know, just to keep the dream alive for them.
I remember being on the bus to school with someone who genuinely believed in Herobrine, given that we were both like 8, and I did too.
We'd share stories about "Sightings" that we'd both had. We were both genuinely afraid he'd show himself in one of our worlds and delete it or something.
But eventually you stop believing when you get smart enough, and as more and more updates came to the game, I started playing less and less, and that sense of unease was almost completely gone. almost.
I wouldn't say I'm scared of the game, but I'd be lying if I didn't psyche myself out every now and then.
You know, like you think you see a figure in the dark in a cave but it's just a zombie or a block at a weird angle.
Now time to loop back.
There were two specific ARGs and unfiction projects I wanted to talk about from Sagan Hawkes' videos, and they are
Old Minecraft Reuploads
AndrewGaming67
OMR tells the story of two friends who unleash something malicious by digging through the games files in an attempt to find cool stuff
AndrewGaming67 is about a guy trying to relive the old days by exploring a world he used to play with a friend of his who's been mysteriously inactive online.
Given that I used to play Minecraft a lot, and still do to an extent, these two stories drew me in. They held me with an iron grip.
OMR was abandoned 3 years ago as far as I can tell, and AndrewGaming67 is still ongoing (I think) I'm waiting for more videos so I can watch all of them at once.
But these stories had me thinking. Why can't I make my own.
Well there's several reasons. I have ideas for them but I lack the editing skills, the friends I'd need to help, and the technical skills for any modifications I'd need to make to the game.
But to say I was inspired would be true. I just didn't do anything with the inspiration. I'm still to this day thinking of neat little ideas for digital horror projects in many different games.
But these Minecraft horror projects have inspired... other.. stuff.
When it became popular to do so again, the urge to make Minecraft more spooky hit a creator named Gargin, who once (unintentionally) had the Gmod Workshop flooded with nextbot slop because he dared to make an actually good png nextbot.
And he proceeded to do almost the same thing with minecraft.
He made a somewhat well made horror mod called the cave dweller and (unintentionally) caused a wave of samey and boring "dweller" mods to flood the modding community.
Kinda feel bad for the guy.
Anyways, I just wanted to talk about horror and minecraft. Thanks for being my void to talk into.

A Time Called You - 6/10
If I'm being honest, the only reason I chose to watch this drama was because NewJeans recorded a song for the soundtrack (their song was BARELY even in it btw) and like... wtf was this drama even? Time travel? A magic cassette player/cassette tape? Body switching? Convoluted time loops? Ignoring things like 'wtf is everyone's family doing during all of this'? Did Steven Moffat write this show?
HOWEVER, the male lead is SUPER charming (I also enjoyed this actor in Business Proposal) so like it's not all bad? LOL IDEK. This was a fucking WEIRD show. But I guess if you don't think about it at all and just like... enjoy the vibes, it's fine? A weird and not super satisfying ending, but like honestly once you're bringing in time travel and doppelgangers is it even possible to tie things up in a satisfying way?
OK SO. Basically, Jun-hee's boyfriend Yeon-jun died in a plane crash in 2022 and in 2023 she's still coping with the loss when she receives a mysterious gift of a cassette and cassette player. When she listens to the cassette, she wakes up in 1998 in the body of a girl who looks exactly like her named Min-ju. And in 1998, she encounters Si-heon who looks exactly like Yeon-jun. Also Si-heon's best friend, In-gyu has a crush on Min-ju. YEAH. IT'S THAT FUCKING WEIRD. And the internal logic is SHAKY at best.
Once the timelines change at the end of the series it's VERY unclear who remembers what and how much they remember. And also like... we see Si-heon post timeline fuckery in 2011 when he meets Jun-hee (and apparently remembers her?) but nothing about In-gyu and Min-ju? lol Are Min-ju and In-gyu married in 2011? Are In-gyu and Si-heon still friends? I like to imagine Si-heon showing up to a friend gathering with his new girlfriend, Jun-hee in tow like "hey In-gyu! I got a new girlfriend who looks EXACTLY like your wife except like 10 years younger!" LMFAO.
Also, wtf happened to the real Yeon-jun after the timelines were all messed with? I hope he's living his best gay life with Rowoon, but uh.... who knows! The show certainly didn't care about the one gay character who was in the show for all of like 5 minutes but his life/body were kinda central to the heteros and their drama!

Let me gues wha they did with my clone:
They used him as baby-head-spear. Now, how much cloning/sperm-bank is associated with those baby-head people.
Guy Posted About Local Cops on Facebook - They Arrest Him For it!
The monstrous way he grabbed like a dog on X-T is terrorism.
{Veganism leads to this way of thinking about letters}
The thing is in 2011 a under happened according to the arrestee & I was falsely imprisoned in 2011 for over 5 months with 2 vitals.
He's a shade conspiracy hiding murders! So are the others with his dark mannerism. I've seen a few such as stiffness & claw-like grabs..
{The video references a death inside POLICE/Sherriff in 2011} They were able to erase the whole facility(RCJ) to loop hole people about addressing this issue.
The misogynistic perverted pushing was present in my case. Racist & robotic pushing. No reason for that Ego manistic exertion. Those are done in tandem to radicalize new recruits.
The government fiber of sense was broken when they put me away & the Eves colluded upon the officers to make them feel good about putting me away for being Anti-Adam&Eve by effect: JUSUS(2nd name before JESUS 3rd)
M-80s are fire-crackers. The POLICE/Sheriff have gotten away with making me deal with months of legal labor for nothing other than 5 years+ of prison SINCE THEY STOLE MY SPERM to make a vision baby who eats bites of what they want to capture eats. These women 10 corruption. They are Eves. Simplistic as a Nazi. They're to be video-taped manning up.

LE031 Sun Araw Fluid Array
Sun Araw is the working title of a musical project helmed by Los Angeles-based artist Cameron Stallones. Sun Araw has released a number of well-received and consistently innovative albums, with his eighth, The Saddle of the Increate, released by Sun Ark Records (an imprint of Drag City) in 2017.
Structural and spiritual inspiration for Sun Araw comes primarily from investigation into the nature of experience by the transformative power of simple observation. The goal has always been the creation of a psychedelic music, by which is meant a psychotropic music: not an aesthetic sensibility but a method of discontinuous experience. Supporting every Sun Araw composition is the fact of mantra: the ability of repetition with attention to change the perception of a melodic object. By means of this constantly changing perception, the possibilities of improvisation become infinite. More recent works attempt to effect the mental activity of the listener even more physically and investigate the expansion of the time-experience when the composition removes a fixed place from which to listen.
Since the project's inception in 2007, eight full-length LPs, three EPs, six cassettes, and innumerable collaborations have emerged, partaking in a musical spectrum spanning psychedelic drone and melted afrobeat, warped dub and minimal composition, all the while remaining distinct from any possible genre classification. In 2012 a posthumous split seven inch with minimalist psychedelic legends Spacemen 3 bent the circle of influence into a spiral. Sun Araw’s releases have been praised in Wire Magazine (who selected Heavy Deeds as one of the top 50 records of 2009, On Patrol in the top 50 of 2010, and Ancient Romans in the top 50 of 2011), The New Yorker, The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Uncut Magazine, Mojo, Pitchfork, and beyond. Sun Araw has toured extensively domestically and abroad, performing in Europe, Russia, Australia, Mexico, South America, and Canada.
In early 2011, Cameron and M. Geddes Gengras traveled to Jamaica where they recorded and produced Icon Give Thank, a collaborative album with roots-reggae legends The Congos, which has led to a live performance at the Barbican in London and a concert in Manhattan with Lee Scratch Perry. While in and around Kingston, Cameron and Ged also began producing dancehall singles and tracking local vocalists under the name Duppy Gun Productions, and are currently releasing this material with the help of Stones Throw Records.
Cameron creates the artwork for each release, writes liner notes, and has started a photographic series of books and videos and a radio show under the name Second System Vision.
Artist notes: In 2015 for the album Gazebo Effect, Mitchell Brown and I conceived a music system which would allow me to improvise with several instruments while running through a quarter inch reel-to-reel tape machine that Mitchell was controlling and manipulating in realtime. The system we developed gives him the ability to dub pieces of my playing onto a repeating tape loop, sometimes allowing me to hear my playing before it's recorded, other times not. Sort of like playing an instrument into a wood-chipper. The general principle has held strong for years in our collaboration, although the equipment has been continually modified and optimised. The joy in this sort of setup is simple: mediated desire. The player makes a move, but what returns to the ears as audio is not quite the move that was made, it has been modified by the tape system. This is something that happens regularly in human experience: desire or will become modified by physics or the desire of another, and the difference between the original move and what returns holds a clue about the nature of the medium in which we find ourselves. Mitchell and I have found that mimicking this principle in our improvisational system continuously yields surprising and beautiful results, and makes us both better performers as we learn to adapt to and frolic with the medium in which we find ourselves.
Longform music and the act of listening deeply are incredibly powerful tools for the modification of experience. Surface level attention acts sort of like a dog, it sniffs something, decides what it is, and kinda plods away looking for another smell. The best deep-listening music gently suggests, by weight of some sort of internal vibrancy, another, deeper return of the attention. Each subsequent return of the attention gives something back: at first just the energy that would have been spent wandering off, but before long a gentle glow can develop, and a sound that perhaps has not changed (say, in an Elaine Radigue monolith) now holds three extra colours that it didn't before. It's not long before looking deeper becomes its own reward, and soon bestows the most important quality of all: a distinct modification in the normal feeling of time, which is the harbinger of all the best sorts of human experiences.

“I like listening to these pieces in my car, or when I’m going to sleep, or when I’m reading or when I feel sick, tired, or stressed and I need some soothing, healing or relaxation,” Greg Davis says of the two widescreen, ever-ascending drone pieces that comprise blue fifty-three. “They can be put on as background ambient music to enhance or colour a space or you can immerse yourself into it fully and turn off all distractions from the outside world.”
The two pieces – Full Spectrum 5 and 6 – sound elemental, like they materialised out of the atmosphere. Instinctive as the breeze and breath. It’s surprising to learn that they’ve been gestating quietly for the past 13 years, having first begun to take shape in 2011.
While this perhaps puts Greg’s work at odds with many exponents of modern drone, who prioritise immediacy, improvisation and feel over painstaking composition, learning a little more about this prolific musician’s process for these pieces explains why a long incubation is necessary here.
“These pieces are made by taking a chord, texture or melody and feeding into a delay or looping system for at least 24 hours with infinite sound on sound capabilities,” elucidates Greg.
“This causes the sounds to smear and fill up every available space in the sonic spectrum. The recent pieces were processed slowly for years until I developed enough satisfying material to make the final mixes you hear on the new release. So, in a way, the sounds are turned over and over again and composted and recycled many times to create these textures and spaces. They really start from a single sonic seed and bloom from there.”
That’s beautiful. Sound that isn’t as much composed as composted.
blue fifty-three is nourishing music. Easy enough on the ear to function as aural decoration, sure, but its real value is felt when closing everything else out, sealing yourself inside the sound with headphones and letting it fix you.

Praise for Greg Davis
“There may be mathematical precision to this music’s execution, but above all, it’s a deeply human experience through what sounds like the sonic equivalent of space exploration.” - Popmatters
“Greg Davis has had wide experience as a musician, a multi-instrumentalist who has dabbled in hip-hop, jazz, field recordings and free improv. But he’s found his true calling in using technology in summoning sounds alien to human ears. Alien, but also perfect for them.” – Something Else
“The layered tones are haunting as well as comforting.” – Igloo Magazine

21+ LITERATE RP AD // ROTCORE ONLY]
yo.
i’m 25 (ancient).
looking for someone (21+) to write oc x oc with me.
mxf or mxm — vibes are negotiable, trauma is not.
writing style is literate / multi-para / novella
no script. no asterisks. no weird spacing. just vibes, rot, and emotional collapse.
⸻
about the lil freak you’d be writing against:
his name’s kyle.
22.
looks like if tumblr in 2011 was a person who once got scouted by Hedi Slimane and never recovered.
6’1. cursed. smells like a discontinued teen girl body spray from 2007 and sadness.
owns exactly one fork and a haunted furby.
• ex-model, current burnout.
• does “weird tech shit” for a job he doesn’t remember applying for.
• lives in a downtown murder apartment w/ a mattress, an unplugged synth, and a thousand VHS tapes he never watches.
• emotionally unavailable but down bad.
• would sell your soul for a lemon bar and a blunt.
⸻
wanting to write stuff that feels like:
• two people rotting together in a room listening to MGMT on loop
• messy hookups, weird boundaries, deep eye contact and no talking about it
• ***“we’re not dating” but they live together, share hoodies, and make out to horror movies
• trauma but like… fun and sexy
• your oc might be normal or worse than him idk surprise me
also down for angst, cursed humor, stoner brainrot, found family, ghosting, haunted romance, and that one fight where someone throws a DS and then cuddles after.
⸻
you:
• 21+
• have a rotted little oc with at least one weird tattoo and unresolved damage
• also literate, send long/medium replies that make me scream and rot and ascend
• into vibes, lore, playlists, mochi, and men who vape in bed and never say “i love you” but make it obvious
• won’t flinch when kyle shows up at your oc’s door at 4am like “yo can i sleep in ur bed i think my apartment’s haunted again.”
⸻
if you’re still reading this you’re probably cursed too.
hit me up.
discord is: raccoonfruitloops (don’t ask)
