Virtual Studio Technology (VSTs for short) more commonly referred to as audio plug-ins are a form of software that integrate instruments such as synthesizers and effects into your DAW. They allow you to process your signal in a similar way that the hardware units at studios do and can add a great variety of options and flavor to your music making process.

There is an exorbitant amount of audio plug-ins out there, and while most of them emulate a physical synth or instruments, some are digital creations with no physical counterpart. Some of the top of the line plug-ins are designed by companies who also design musi hardware and come at a steep price but there are just as many free ones that are equally great. When it comes to VSTs, there is no option but to try them out for yourself to find out what you like and what aligns best with your musical objectives. 

Note: Your DAW also comes equipped with stock plug-ins, and most of them will get the job done just fine, so do not feel like you have to download a ton of plug-ins to make some good music.

for context, I have started taking classes to get a recording engineering associates degree. we use pro tools, because it is apparently the industry standard. (bad choice on the part of industry. but it makes sense because capitalism does not make good decisions! but I digress.)

anyway, there's a virtual instrument called Xpand!2 that has a wide variety of MIDI sounds, and I was looking high&low in all the string, guitar, etc. sections trying to find a banjo. no dice, so I ended up working without it for several days. can you guess where I finally found the banjo, just clicking around today?
