Beer Keg Blastoff!
And now for something completely different… Team Numb comfortably launched a fat rocket on a P7000 motor to loft a full beer keg from Oregon up over a mile high. 175 lbs of beer. 60 lbs of Alumaflame solid rocket propellant (looks like gray styrofoam, but burns in a violet flame).6,100 ft. Perfect flight. Beer shaken, not stirred, and tapped at the landing site. The donut stayed on the nosecone for a surprisingly long time. Here is the launch video, with a hearty roar...

Graffiti as Protest: The Power of Street Art in Activism
MDA20009 DIGITAL COMMUNITIES
It’s been a while, but I’m back here! Today, we’re diving into social activism, protest, and citizenship specifically through the lens of street art and activism, with a focus on Banksy and his impact.
How Street Art Became a Voice for Change
Street art has evolved from being dismissed as “just graffiti” to a powerful tool of resistance, embodying both continuity and change in social activism. Its dynamic and aesthetic qualities play a crucial role in shaping the future of communities (Awad et al., 2017). Banksy, in particular, has turned street art into a megaphone for everything from anti-capitalism to anti-war messages. His work isn’t just eye-catching, it’s thought-provoking and accessible, reaching people who might not pay attention to protests or politics otherwise.
Banksy’s work often uses humor and irony, giving it a unique power to resonate. This British irony serves as a critical and imaginative tool, encouraging people to reflect on the possibilities and limitations of global justice (Brassett, 2009). He’s famous for using stencils to create images that pop up overnight, grabbing attention in public spaces. Take his iconic “Girl with a Balloon.” It’s simple but resonates with themes of hope and loss, things we all get. His style isn’t about fancy details but it’s straightforward and instantly recognizable. Banksy’s art can make you laugh and think at the same time something not many traditional art forms manage to do.

Girl with Balloon by Banksy
According to (MyArtBroker, 2023) The iconic Girl With Balloon, also known as Balloon Girl, first appeared in London in 2002. It was initially stenciled on the walls beneath Waterloo Bridge at London.
Can Art Speak the Truth?
Why does Banksy’s street art work as a symbol of protest? It’s because it taps into public frustration and becomes a rallying point for broader social movements. In 2019, Banksy’s Season’s Greetings appeared on a garage wall in Wales, showing a boy turning away from a snowy scene to focus on a dumpster on fire. Similar to his earlier work, Slave Labour, it turned public spaces into arenas for protest and social commentary (Hansen & Danny, 2015). This mural perfectly captured the mood of public frustration at a time when people felt overwhelmed by political instability and environmental issues.

Banksy’s Season’s Greetings
What makes Banksy’s art so powerful is how it taps into people’s emotions. He uses dark humor to shine a light on uncomfortable truths. By putting these tough subjects out in public spaces, his work grabs attention and sparks conversation. It becomes a protest in itself, encouraging people to confront social issues directly.
Street Art as a Tool for Activism
One of the coolest things about street art is how accessible it is. Unlike gallery art, street art is accessible to everyone, turning everyday streets into open-air exhibits. Flickr users, for instance, often tag and categorize street art, showing how they interpret and value this unique art form (Philipps et al., 2017). Banksy’s work turns walls and buildings into platforms for political messages, breaking down that invisible wall between “serious” art and everyday life. You don’t need a ticket or a fancy gallery, his art is just out there, making you think about things you wouldn’t normally stop to question.

Banksy Street Art Collection
When you stumble across a Banksy piece, it interrupts the daily grind, almost forcing you to think about whatever message he’s trying to get across. It’s activism in one of its purest forms, sneaking past the media filters and going straight to the public. This is why street art powerfully blends activism with public space, shaping political awareness through its presence and the conversations it sparks, as seen in depictions of Egyptian uprising activists (Blaagaard & Mollerup, 2020).
Banksy, Redefining Art as Activism
Banksy’s street art has completely redefined what it means to protest. Take Rage, the Flower Thrower, for example. Instead of a Molotov cocktail, a protester throws a bouquet of flowers, sending a clear message about peaceful resistance. Then there’s Kissing Coppers, where two policemen share a kiss, challenging everything we think we know about authority and masculinity. These pieces aren’t just cool to look at. They push us to think about big issues and spark important conversations. And thanks to social media, Banksy’s art doesn’t just stay on the streets. It spreads like wildfire, turning his pieces into global symbols of activism.

But Banksy’s legacy goes way beyond the walls he paints. He’s transformed street art from being labeled “vandalism” to a powerful form of social commentary that speaks to everyone. In a world that’s growing skeptical of politics and the media, his art offers something fresh, raw, unfiltered, and totally relatable. Through his humor and genius use of public spaces, Banksy has shown that art can be just as impactful as any protest march. It’s a reminder that activism doesn’t always have to be loud or in-your-face. Sometimes, it’s just a piece of art on a wall that makes you stop, think, and take action.

If you were a street artist, what kind of bold message would you slap on a wall?

“A little tap at the window, as though some missile had struck it, followed by a plentiful, falling sound, as light, though, as if a shower of sand were being sprinkled from a window overhead; then the fall spread, took on an order, a rhythm, became liquid, loud, drumming, musical, innumerable, universal. It was the rain”

Jeanette Mundt, Climbing, 2019, oil on canvas.
Jeanette Mundt (born 1982) is an American painter, best known for her works in the 2019 Whitney Biennial.
J Mundt refuses to commit to one style of painting. Her dynamic, formally omnivorous practice mirrors the ever-changing velocity of culture. Mundt's lush paintings freely tap a variety of input, ranging from Google image searches, Flickr accounts, magazines, and personal photographs to her own exhibition documentation.

A Day for Friends & Siblings
On this day in 1804, the Lewis and Clark Expedition officially began with their departure from St. Charles, Missouri. In 1906, the Wright brothers were granted a U.S. patent for their “Flying-Machine.”
May 22 is the International Day for Biological Diversity, Chardonnay Day, National Craft Distillery Day, National Vanilla Pudding Day, World Goth Day, and Sherlock Holmes Day because it is the birthday of Arthur Conan Doyle.
It was damp this morning, with a few sprinkles, but not much real rain. The overnight low was only 50 degrees, and the high only reached 59.
My blood sugar remained in the safe zone, at 154, for the ninth day in a row. The importance of protein for dinner is not to be dismissed.
After our morning coffee and brain games, Nancy went to the grocery store for cat food. Once she gave the cats their food for the morning, we enjoyed oatmeal for our breakfast.
Beginning about 10:30 a.m., Nancy talked with friend Beth, who has moved from Tucson to Minnesota. Like us with the move to Oregon, Beth and her husband Bob are excited to be back in a place where there is lots of green and lots of water.
Following her call, we showered and dressed, then drove down to Cottage Grove for lunch with Nancy’s siblings, Joan and Robin. We picked up Joan from her residence and then met Robin at Jack Sprat’s, a little cafe on the town’s main street. The street is under construction, which will continue through the end of the year, according to local reports.
We enjoyed our lunches. Nancy got a loaded baked potato. I ordered something from the menu by the name Broccoli Bacon Mac. There was no actual pasta with the broccoli and bacon, which were covered with a sauce made of several cheeses. The staff person said it was a sneaky way of getting people to eat a healthy dish. It was quite tasty, and I did not miss the pasta.
After lunch, Robin took Joan home, and Nancy and I walked down a block to where the Centennial Pedestrian Bridge was located on the edge of downtown. I had brought my Nikon with us, and I took several pictures of the bridge. Previously, I took pictures of the bridge with my iPhone, and those had never been uploaded to Flickr. There are a number of bridges we have visited that I need to return to with my Nikon.
On the way out of Cottage Grove, we stopped at a coffee place for a mocha, then we headed for Costco to pick up Nancy’s new sunglasses, a couple of food items, and a big package of toilet paper. Then we went by Market of Choice on Coburg Road to get the chicken, mushrooms and heavy cream for tomorrow night’s dinner with family.
We put everything away when we got home, then I went out a little after 4 p.m. for a walk by myself around a big block i our neighborhood. I did 1.4 miles in just over 29 minutes, a total of 3,300 steps.
At 5 p.m., Nancy made another call to a Tucson friend. This time it was Leslie, her former acupuncture colleague. They used to meet for wine once a month or so, so Nancy poured herself a glass for the call.
While they were still talking, I warmed up more leftover roast, potatoes and carrots for my dinner a little after 6 p.m. I left for the Thursday recovery meeting about 6:30. I was tapped to lead the meeting, which meant that I opened the sharing part. I mentioned the recent one year anniversary of our move here and how much the local fellowship had meant to me in getting settled here.
I got home from the meeting about 8:30 p.m., and Nancy and I got right into streaming, beginning with Colbert’s Wednesday program, with guest Natalie Portman discussing her upcoming movie on AppleTV+, “Fountain of Youth,” also starring John Krasinski.
We finished the evening with the first of four parts on PBS of “Miss Austen,” starring Keeley Hawes, which follows the lives of Jane Austen and her sister, Cassandra. It was based on the novel by Gill Hornby.
Tonight is supposed to get down to 45 degrees, while tomorrow’s high looks like it will reach the mid-60s, thanks to the sunshine that is expected during the afternoon. The only item on our schedule for Friday is the dinner we are preparing for family members Kathleen, Ronin and Keira, and that will be chicken marsala, along with rice and roasted veggies. Kathleen promised to bring something for dessert, which will no doubt be quite delicious.

attention all of my worst critics! the first of many odes to chiodos.
the chiODES — issue number one.

so... i think i have a thing for craig owens...
what a crazy preface right? but can a girl help it?? i often find myself mindlessly scrolling flickr looking at old pictures of the band and my goodness they are just so good looking its unfair!
i have a very close relationship with the DeepRockDrive series of live performances chiodos did back in 2008 that yall just wouldnt understand *rolls eyes*
but no seriously, i love those videos. not just because of those damn good looks (cmon im not that far gone) but also because of how tuned up they all are (special shoutout to the sound engineer!!). you can hear each instrument extremely well and they mesh so well together. god they're just soooo cohesive it's unreal. i will lay dead and dying on the hill that the AWTEW / bone palace lineup was spectacular and can never be recreated. what they did on those first two records is something very special.
there's this one part of their performance for BYWLAMOTC that lives rent. free. in my mind. check it out
credit: Deep Rock Drive Vault on youtube
ugh. fucking mind killer. first we got derrick going ham on that kit and looking like a classic seventies music star with that haircut and those buttons popped. my god he was sooo tight during this performance it's insane. also i think he was using click tracks on his ipod! cause multiple times throughout these videos towards the end and the beginning of each song you can catch a glimpse of him changing the track on his ipod and i think it was somehow connected to his in ear haha. and there's an interview he did where he talks about how he basically can't live without click tracks anymore. not sure the date of this interview but my point still very much stands.
my favorite part of this whole video is that one shot of jason and matt i included in the above clip. where jason looks over in the direction of the keyboard and physically cues brad's glissando but matt catches his eye and does a slight nod of acknowledgment while continuing to pump out that bass line (side note: chiodos has some really good bass lines and it's great that you can hear them in not only live performances but on the record as well). this just shows how much they all listen to each others parts. it's not mindless individual playing, although i'd reckon that's pretty hard to do in a fucking band of all things but hey i'm sure some bands have adopted that mentality haha. but these dudes are interwoven. i legit have found myself double tapping the ten second rewind for that clip one too many times that's for sure.
jason and matt make such an appealing duo musically that it's almost sinful to watch. the groove between those two is so seamless it's almost tangible. matt is in the pocket so much that i often find myself peeking in there to check on him. i have to make sure he doesn't get lost you know!! the part in the song where everything slows down and that bass part comes in swinging. ugh. matt goddard the man that you areeeeeeee. and jason makes it looks so effortless. i love how he rips out these enchanting melodies like it's absolutely nothing, but you can tell he knows he's smashing it.
continuing to break down this performance. that beast bradley motherfuckin bell. he throws down on those keyboards oh my lord. he truly is a necessary component of that chiodos sound. without him, it's not chiodos. it won’t let me upload multiple videos <//3 but there’s a part of him going cuckoo bananas in that very same performance and then it cuts to a view of derrick with pat in the background and they’re both so into it it’s great. someone in the live chat kept spamming the comment “brad write sheet music” and i thought that was the funniest thing. i’m sure he had written some — how else would he have played and recorded his parts (unless he’s fucking cam jansen) but it’s either lost or somewhere buried in his house. one can only imagine. it would’ve been so cool if he uploaded them but alas. also that live chat was going insane... some of those people were weird as hell.
another thing that caught my attention during these performances was the fact that brad has a chiodos tattoo on his arm. under normal circumstances it would probably be hidden under the sleeve of his shirt but when he lifted his arm you could see it. i know craig has one on his lower arm and due to my flickr doomscroll, i consequently discovered jason has one as well — and in true rock star fashion — on his right butt cheek! this leads me to wonder if pat, derrick or matt have one. the former two are not so likely or they’re just hidden under clothes since they really have no visible tattoos or body mod. derrick on the other hand has plenty of tattoos to go around, leading me to believe he indeed has one as well. ahh the noticings of a too keen fangirl, but i press on.
for what it's worth, i must dote on pat as well. i don't think i give him enough credit, or anyone does for that matter. while jason pumps out those signature tantilizing riffs that lodge themselves into our subconscious, pat is the one keeping us all grounded with those steady rhythms that often match up with our beloved drums (we <3 you derrick). i absolutely love what pat did in TWBFBR from this very same live show but i’m corking that for a separate post. i also love watching pat get into the music. he has this classic sort of boyish charm about him. very much the midwest boy next door... except this boy plays guitar and is in a band. makes the heart flutter even more, am i right?
and to our frontman, mister craig owens himself. let me just say that his screams are absolutely lethal. definitely some of my favorite in the phc umbrella. i don't understand how he can go from cleans to uncleans and uncleans to cleans so flawlessly.. (i feel the same way about vic fuentes mind you). craig always knows how to put on a show and his crowdwork is very clever. for me, the biggest draw with craig is that his voice is kinda unique. he's not the best vocalist.. but it works?? and in no way am i bashing craig and i mean no disrespect towards him, these are just my opinions. but he doesn't have to be fucking luther vandross. i mean.. let's not even talk about jonny craig HAHA. but what craig (owens) does with his voice works for the art he and the guys create. he may sound questionable at times if you listen too closely but somehow it still sounds good cause it fits the music. i love his voice. also what the flip to that lil commentary from him towards the end. he was giving people high fives and said "i like touching everybody." and some girl screamed "TOUCH ME CRAIG!" me for realzzz. and then i guess someone in the crowd said they could see his underwear and craig went "oh you can see my superman boxers? whoops.." ugh. i am so sorry to be that fangirl but he sounded so yummy when he said that LOLZ.
but i genuinely cannot fathom how the crowd was so lax throughout this. the CRAIG OWENS of davison michigan was standing right up close and they were acting like this was a normal occurrence?! what the helllllll. life is so unfair. i would have been baring those lyrics wholeheartedly from the depths of my soul. they would've had to pump me with anesthesia to keep me subdued cause aint no way in hell! on a side note, i often wonder if even i was a teenager during this time, would i have been into this type of music? it's something i find myself thinking about a bit too much but we'll definitely be filing that discussion for another post hehe.
there is plenty for me to lay on the table about the Deep Rock Drive videos but i think i’ll make this a series and pick on a specific video whenever it strikes the mood like i did here to incorporate into my chiODES ;))
what should i title this series? i'm toying with chiODES LOLZ but i feel like that's bit too close to the other vulgar word. unfortunately it's such a neat play on the band name and the word "ode" so i might give in. chiODES? chiOdes? chiodes? chiodeos? chiODEos? i dunno. it really is quite clever though so i'll have to think about it.
this was so much fun to write and i'm excited to do more posts like this!
with love xx

Five Clowns Images Wall Art by Mark Edwards Via Flickr: Part of a planned series of images I’m working on, this one is designed to grab attention and is just two clowns. I know for some, this image will evoke a shiver or two. Coulrophobia, the fear of clowns, is surprisingly common and often rooted in childhood memories. It's fascinating how this seemingly innocent figure has become a symbol of unease for many. Filmmakers have long tapped into this phobia, creating unforgettable and chilling scenes. One of the most recent and notable examples is the Joker from the Batman films, whose haunting presence continues to captivate and unsettle audiences.
