Welp, this post is long overdue.
First off, its World Meerkat Day!!
Started by the Taronga Western Plains Zoo on July 3 2018, it's now an international holiday to raise awareness of and celebrate these wonderful creatures.
Celebrate meerkats today!
Tumblr media
...now onto the second part of this post- some of you may have noticed this blog hasn't been active for several months now. Not gonna lie, I've been pretty burnt out for a while, and stepping away from this blog has helped lessen the amount of daily stress I have to deal with. Did you know I've been running this blog practically non-stop since 2012??
Honestly at first I didn't have any intention on returning here- after all, if you want meerkat content, go check out the #meerkat or related tags yourself! Buuut then I noticed World Meerkat Day is today, and hey, I still love meerkats!
So I'm tentatively returning to this blog, but perhaps not as strictly as before. I want to post a lot today in celebration of World Meerkat Day, since there's so many wonderful photos, videos, and other forms of art to share! But even the daily queued post was getting a bit much for me, so after today I might just reblog sporadically at my own pace, whenever I find the time/energy. There might be long breaks and less original posts, but that way I can safely say this blog will stay at least semi-active. (And remember, I'm always open to submissions!)
That's all I have to say! Thank you to everyone over the years for the love and support. This blog is back! Celebrate a meerkat today!

King Edward III of England was fond of hunting cats and had one with him during one of his Scottish campaigns that would sit on his horse with him. Although we don’t know exactly what sort of cat it was we do know that they were large cats of sone description and that cheetahs were popular for such activities. Other smaller big cats may have been used as well. There were a number of animals that caught my medieval imagination while at Western Plains Zoo earlier this week I’ll share sone more medieval animal trivia over the next few days. #medieval #animals #cheetah #bigcat #bigcatsofinstagram #tarongawesternplainszoo #conservation #middleages #bestiary (at Taronga Western Plains Zoo) https://www.instagram.com/p/CjIV5iRL33h/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Affordable Adventures Near Taronga Western Plains Zoo
Tumblr media
Dubbo, nestled in the heart of New South Wales, beckons families and wildlife enthusiasts with its crown jewel: Taronga Western Plains Zoo. While the prospect of encountering lions, giraffes, and cheetahs is thrilling, the cost of Dubbo Accommodations Near the Zoo can sometimes raise concerns. Dubbo offers a variety of comfortable and affordable options to ensure your wildlife adventure doesn't break the bank.
Motels On The Move: Comfort And Convenience At A Reasonable Price
Motels are a classic choice for affordable accommodation near Taronga Western Plains Zoo. These conveniently located establishments often boast on-site parking, free Wi-Fi, and potentially continental breakfasts to kickstart your day.
Many motels feature family-friendly rooms with multiple beds, perfect for accommodating families without requiring extra expenses for cots or squeezing onto single beds. Look for motels within walking distance of the zoo or near public transport links, minimising travel hassles and maximising your time exploring the wonders of the animal kingdom.
Self-Catering Apartments: Save Money, Savor Freedom
For families and budget-conscious travellers, serviced apartments offer a cost-saving alternative to traditional hotel rooms. These fully-equipped apartments have kitchen facilities, allowing you to prepare meals and avoid dining-out expenses throughout your stay.
Imagine whipping up a quick breakfast before heading to the zoo or enjoying a family dinner cooked with fresh local ingredients from nearby supermarkets.
Many serviced apartments also feature laundry facilities, allowing you to pack lighter and avoid hefty laundry charges. Look for apartment complexes near the zoo or with convenient access to public transport for easy zoo access.
Package Power: Bundling Savings For Smart Travelers
A little research can go a long way regarding finding affordable accommodation near Taronga Western Plains Zoo. Many hotels and motels offer special packages that bundle accommodation with zoo tickets. This can result in significant savings compared to booking these items separately.
Watch for deals and packages advertised on hotel websites, travel booking platforms, or the zoo's official website. These packages often cater to families or specific durations of stay, so be sure to compare options and find the one that best suits your needs and budget.
Public Transport Perks: Affordable Access To The Zoo
If staying within walking distance of the zoo isn't feasible or doesn't fit your budget, consider hotels near public transport links. Dubbo boasts a reliable bus network that connects various parts of the city, including the zoo. Many hotels offer complimentary shuttle services to nearby bus stops, making it easy and affordable to reach the zoo. Public transport passes are also available, potentially saving you money compared to taxi fares or the cost of car rentals if you're not planning on extensive exploration beyond the zoo.
Final Thoughts
By considering motels, serviced apartments, package deals, and public transport options, you can secure comfortable and budget-friendly Dubbo accommodations near the zoo. Remember to research and book your stay in advance, especially during peak seasons. With a little planning and these tips in mind, you can transform your Dubbo adventure into an unforgettable and affordable experience filled with wildlife encounters, family fun, and lasting memories.

Triple treat of Taronga’s lion cubs named
Taronga Western Plains Zoo’s three new lion cubs have been named in homage to their African ancestors. The triple treat of female cubs arrived at the zoo in Dubbo in central western NSW in April, the first litter since 2016. Lion Supervisor Justine Powell says the four-month-old sisters have been named Amali (Hope), Imani (Faith) and Mara – after the Masai Mara National Park in Kenya that remains…

Giraffe numbers have been declining in the wild over the past decade due to habitat encroachment, snares, civil unrest and poaching. The wild population is estimated at less than 117,000, indicating a decline of 40 per cent over 30 years.

It’s so strange. I am feeling so nostalgic about my eReader today. We’ve had so many fun adventures together. I bought it for myself right before my birthday in 2016, so it went with me on my birthday weekend trip to the Taronga Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo. I was reading Dracula at the time, and really enjoying it. I couldn’t read it in the car, as I get very motion sick, and I didn’t want to risk it on a long trip, but I did read it at night time when I couldn’t sleep. It is seriously one of the best things I have ever bought myself. The feeling of carrying worlds in my back pack is amazing. I bought one for my husband for Christmas, and he has really been enjoying it as well.

The rhino in the Middle Ages was called the monocerus and sometimes the unicorn depending on which bestiary you read. It was believed to be the enemy of the elephant and capable of deadly charges with its horn. Many bestiaries however clearly say the rhino and unicorn are two completely different animals though the illustrations of the monocerus are quite varied and often unlike the rhino. Not surprising given the rhinos reclusive nature and rarity of sightings by western medieval artists. Middle eastern medieval artists were more accurate in their depictions. #medieval #bestiary #animals #history (at Taronga Western Plains Zoo) https://www.instagram.com/p/CjQJzYrrain/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
