CROSSROADS GLOBAL FAN EVENT

Hace unos meses se anunciaba que “Crossroads”, la película de Britney Spears fue estrenada el 23 de Octubre del 2.002, se iba a reestrenar por motivo de su aniversario y por el lanzamiento del libro de Brit llamado “The Woman In Me” (lanzado el 24 de Octubre de este año).

Obviamente, como cualquier otro fanático de la cantante, me entusiasme muchísimo con la idea, realmente amo mucho esa película y la he visto millones de veces, siempre quise verla en cine, pero no se dio la oportunidad, en ese entonces ir a un cine era un lujo que lamentablemente no me podía permitir. Por otro lado, estaba encantadísimo con que se reestrene, pero digo, seguramente es algo que se dará en el primer mundo, en los países que siempre están primeros o solamente en los Estados Unidos.

Un día cualquiera, mientras miraba Instagram, me aparece una publicación en la cual promocionaba a “Crossroads, a global fan event” y entro a chusmear nada más, resulta que era Cinépolis de Argentina. ¡No lo podía creer! Así que automáticamente entro a la pagina del cine al que voy siempre y si, me aparece la venta de entradas anticipadas. Mi día se iluminó completamente, no caía que en mi país se transmita el evento global, y cuando quiero ver si el cine de mi provincia la iba a pasar, me doy con que si… No dude ni un minuto y quería comprar la entrada, solo habían 2 días: Lunes 23 y Miércoles 25… Hice un análisis rápido de mi agenda y opté por el miércoles 25 así que compré las entradas casi con un mes de anticipación, ¡yo era el único en la sala en ese entonces!

Y hoy llegó el tan esperado Miércoles 25, (al momento de publicar esto ya será 26). Me levanto, hago mis cosas diarias y en la mañana reviso los pasajes para poder viajar. El que yo quería ir, 17.30, ya no existía, no había lugar así que tocó tomarme el de las 18.35. Ese horario me hacia mucho conflicto porque si bien el viaje demora 45-50 minutos, con las demoras que se producen y demás estaría llegando sobre la hora al cine y me estaba desesperando. Pero no tenía otra opción así que tuve que sacar ese.

Al momento de llegar a la terminal para tomarlo, empieza a llover así que estuve mojándome un par de segundos hasta poder subir al colectivo… Salió con demora, claro, así que imagínate como estaba yo sabiendo que iba a llegar tarde. Pero bueno, tenía que bancármela así que me puse música, auriculares e ignoré completamente la hora del teléfono porque iba a ser peor… En el trayecto iba haciendo muchas paradas y eso me daba mas ansiedad porque significaba más demora.

Por suerte llego a Salta. Mientras viajaba solo pedía una cosa a Dios, al universo, a quien sea: que haya un remis en la terminal. Afortunadamente había uno. ¡¡UNO!!  Y lo pude tomar. Que alivio fue ese momento y ahí si decidí mirar la hora: 19.49… Tenia 10 minutos para llegar al cine, imprimir las entradas, ir al baño porque no aguantaba mas e ingresar a la sala que estaba en el otro extremo del pasillo. Por suerte entré y estaban pasando unos anuncios y después trailers.

Finalmente llegó el momento de terminar con los trailer. Las luces se apagaron. La pantalla se puso negra y la gente empezó a aplaudir. Aparecen unas imágenes de la película dándonos la bienvenida, diciéndonos que disfrutemos de la misma y que al final tendremos 2 canciones para que la podamos cantar entre todos. “¡DISFRUTEN Y CANTEN CON NOSOTROS!” y sonaron aplausos en la sala nuevamente. Y comenzó la película. Como dije anteriormente la vi un millón de veces, pero no pude evitar llorar desde el principio. Es una peli que me gusta completamente, muy sana, muy divertida, con un elenco acertado y una historia hermosa. El valor que le dan a la amistad es algo que siempre rescato de esa película porque casualmente es algo que en mi vida cotidiana valoro mucho.

La película pasaba, la gente se reía, todos disfrutábamos. Las canciones que aparecían durante la peli eran cantadas de forma tímida en algunos sectores. Mi entusiasmo y emoción estuvieron en cada minuto. No recuerdo la verdad cuando abre disfrutado tanto de una película de ese tipo. (y no desprestigio a Saw X, Cenicienta y Toy Story que las vi hace unas semanas y las disfrute completamente).

Terminó la peli, la gente volvía a aplaudir. Todos éramos treintones o mas y disfrutamos cada minuto. Mientras pasaban los créditos, se podían ver los bloopers que ocurrieron durante el rodaje. Se apaga la pantalla para mostrar otra en la cual nos invitaba a cantar. Y comenzó la canción “I’m Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman” con imágenes inéditas de la película. Mientras sonaba, abajo aparecía la letra de la canción y la gente la empezó a cantar. No pensé que se animarían y nos unimos todos en el canto, tímidos, pero se sintió. Se sintió esa energía, esa familiaridad, ese volver a esa época en la cual Britney estaba en uno de sus mejores momentos. Fue hermoso. Y cuando termino esa, comenzó “Overprotected”, un clásico. Y en esa estábamos mas entusiasmados y soltados. No nos conocíamos, o por lo menos yo fui solo. Pero se sintió muy lindo toda esa experiencia de cantar como si nada.

La verdad, hoy definitivamente fue el mejor día de lo que va el año… Tuve que esperar 21 años para poder ver la película en cine, en realidad jamás pensé que algo así iba a suceder. La peli no tuvo muuuuy buenas criticas y por lo general no se suelen reestrenar cosas a menos que haya sido wow, un super peliculón onda Titanic o Avatar (esta ultima no la vi, pero es un ejemplo).

Hoy Sali feliz de la sala. Como dije anteriormente esa familiaridad que se sintió y toda esa energía positiva que me abrazaba en la sala me hizo un tipo recontra remil feliz. Todavía recuerdo todo y lo lloro, pero de felicidad, de pura alegría porque fue todo mágico.

Ahora solo me queda esperar el libro, que ya lo compré en la preventa la semana pasada. Vamos a ver que tal esta. Mientras tanto, voy a seguir disfrutando de toda la felicidad que me dio Britney Spears como lo haces desde que conocí su música en un acto de mi escuela primaria allá por 1.998.

Thoughts : 8 Mile (2002)

The legendary path to fame that hip-hop icon Eminem took is the stuff of legend.  Born and raised in poverty, he struggled his entire life before taking a chance on himself by entering the 1997 Scribble Jam freestyle battle, a move that made him both infamous and an important unsigned artist on several record label radars.  This eventually led to his signing on Dr. Dre’s Aftermath Records, and the rest (as they say) is history.  Therefore, who better to star in a loosely autobiographical tale about Eminem than the man himself?  Thus was born 8 Mile. 

Jimmy Smith Jr. (Eminem), known in the hip hop community as B-Rabbit, is a gifted lyricist, but the pressures of life seem to constantly get in the way.  After abruptly leaving his girlfriend Janeane (Taryn Manning) and freezing on stage during an MC battle, Jimmy finds himself homeless and frustrated with his lot in life, despite the support of his friends Future (Mekhi Phifer), Cheddar Bob (Evan Jones), Sol George (Omar Benson Miller) and DJ Iz (De’Angelo Wilson).  Forced to move back home with his mother (Kim Basinger) and get a job at Detroit Stamping, Jimmy is feeling like giving up when a couple of opportunities present themselves : local promoter and childhood friend Wink (Eugene Byrd) promises to get Jimmy studio time to record a demo, and Jimmy meets Alex (Brittany Murphy), whom he is instantly attracted to.  These opportunities turn out, however, to not be what they first seemed.  Wink is deep in the promotional trenches with Papa Doc (Anthony Mackie) and the Free World crew, and Alex is looking for opportunities of her own (and is willing to do whatever it takes to make them happen).  Jimmy attempts to get his life together despite the odds, culminating in a chance at redemption during another MC battle.

8 Mile puts a fresh and unique twist on the ‘based on a true story’ trope.  Broad strokes are taken from Eminem’s real life : his battle rap prowess, growing up in poverty on the outskirts of Detroit, and monumental issues between he and his mother.  The details, however, are given the Hollywood treatment to wonderful effect, creating a sense of meta-ness unlike any other hip-hop film before it or sense.  You essentially know the story has a happy ending, as you are watching the star of the story give you a fictionalized version of his struggle to stardom, yet the end product is wholly captivating, gripping and entertaining.  

One subtle aspect that often goes unnoticed is the fact that the film is a period piece.  This is most obvious in regards to the soundtrack and the era of hip-hop that is showcased in the diegetic sound, club/battle sequences, and even the music videos playing on TVs throughout the film.  I still crack up each time the Free World pulls up anywhere, as I, too, used to drive around listening to South Central Cartel’s Gang Stories on blast.  Other subtle touches include wardrobe (ie Mecca and FUBU gear, as well as bubblegoose jackets).  

The entire film is a build-up to one of the most powerful and captivating final sequences ever captured.  The seed planted during Jimmy’s freeze in the opening moment of the film is more than paid off during the epic final battle, specifically the final round.  The best thing about the battle is that Jimmy’s opponents actually spit credible, solid raps that , in any other film (or against any other MC), would probably be impossible to come back from, which only serves to show the true power of Jimmy’s wordplay, and by proxy, Eminem’s ability to paint a picture with his lyrics. 

Eminem is surprisingly captivating as an actor, albeit the fact that he is essentially playing himself.  His humor lands, and his dramatic moments, while not Oscar worthy, show enough range to keep you interested in his journey.  Mekhi Phifer brings a solid supportive energy needed for a lifetime friend and confidant, while embracing the wonderful contradiction of being a knucklehead by night and spiritual journeyman by day.  Brittany Murphy is enticing as the love interest, but unfortunately comes off as a bit of a one note character, similar to Anthony Mackie and Eugene Byrd, although all three are entertaining in their roles.  Kim Basinger embraces her role as  Jimmy’s mother and constant source of pain/irritation in his life, especially with her relationship to a wonderfully hilarious Michael Shannon performance as a deadbeat.  Evan Jones is the scene-stealing MVP as Cheddar Bob.  

I don’t know if there is another rapper out there that can pull off a film similar to 8 Mile.  The closest I can think of is Krush Groove, but only half of the Simmons brothers have the nerve to portray themselves, with Russell famously opting to cast Blair Underwood to play himself.  When it’s all said and done, 8 Mile will more than likely stand the test of time as a hip-hop cult classic.
