The shift from fall to winter conditions happens quickly on Mount Rainier. Paradise and other subalpine areas have already seen some snow, and more is likely this weekend. When visiting, plan ahead and remember you are responsible for your safety.
Before leaving home, check the current trail conditions and heed local weather forecasts, realizing weather can change for the worse in a very short period of time. Before starting your hike, stop by the Longmire Museum or Jackson Visitor Center in the southwest part of the park, or the Carbon River Ranger Station in the northwest, for the latest trail conditions. Note: While SR410/123 on the east side of the park are still open, all eastside visitor facilities have closed for the season.
Always carry survival gear with you in case you have to spend the night out, including the 10 Essentials: food, water, warm clothing, emergency shelter, stove/fuel, flashlight, avalanche transceiver/probe/shovel, map/compass/GPS, first aide kit, & repair kit for any equipment.
Wear footwear with good tread to minimize risks from slipping. Consider using traction devices like shoe chains or hiking poles for extra stability.
You may need a reliable map and compass skills to traverse snow-covered trails, which can be difficult to follow, particularly in backcountry areas.
Know your limits. Know your experience and ability to survive in an alpine environment and don’t exceed them. A trail that is easy in summer can be challenging in winter.

So this happened today.
The official doc listing all NW Emmy nominees this year can be found here. You'll find me many pages in under Crafts: Editor, Long Form Content.
The only disappointment about the announcement is that the program for which I was nominated as editor did not itself receive a nomination in the category in which it was entered.
If you have 19 minutes and 42 seconds on your hands, please have a look at our baby. We put a massive amount of effort into this project as a production team at UW Video where post-production was handled. Big thanks to Dan Lamont at Tatoosh Media for his expert production efforts without which this piece could not have been what it is. ☺️

scrolling through the wikipedia List of Chinook Jargon place names article & there's a summit in the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest called "Tatoosh Buttes," where "tatoosh" means "breasts." kind of a shame this information is kept locked out of sight of middle schoolers

"Each year, the Seattle Aquarium gets a permit from the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife to collect a certain number of giant Pacific octopuses to live at the Aquarium, where they help educate our guests about their importance to the local ecosystem. When they show signs that they’re mature and ready to mate—typically after a stay of 12 months or so—our divers return them to their original collection location so they can complete their life cycles and reproduce."

The aquarium just released their mature female and got a new giant Pacific octopus. I was lucky enough to meet him on just his second day on display. He's so new that his tank lights are still dimmed while he explores and acclimates.
Not all octopus are suited to being in the public eye; individuals might be kept off display if they're discovered to be shy and crowd adverse. Tatoosh is decidedly not.
A small specimen, comparatively-- mature GPO can reach 110-160 lbs-- he billowed over the glass, arms all stretching and writhing, and I immediately forgot that anyone had ever described him as 'little.' One of his arms, waved just as wildly as the other seven, is nubbish and just now in the process of regrowing.
"Probably stuck it somewhere it didn't belong" joked one volunteer to the other, who laughed and nodded in agreement.

The new addition to the aquarium also has an animal care window, where you can sneak a peek behind the scenes.
I spotted a young leopard shark doing some target training in a temporary pool resembling a massive kiddie pool, and the jellyfish nursery set up for teeny tiny baby jellies.

National Park Week
Mount Rainier may be a 500,000-year-old volcano but if you want to talk about “classic rock” then check out granodiorite! Around 18-14 million years ago, long before “new age” Mount Rainier formed, a large mass of molten rock slowly cooled under the surface, forming granodiorite, a rock similar to granite. This granodiorite underlies the Tatoosh Range, White River, Carbon River, and Nisqually River Valleys. Outcrops of granodiorite can be viewed up-close along White River Road near the White River Campground. Tatoosh granodiorite rocks, rounded by water erosion, are common in the Nisqually River. You may even spot some granodiorite boulders used in the construction of historic structures like the Longmire Administration Building!
Learn more about the geology of Mount Rainier at https://go.nps.gov/MountRainierGeology

Night Watch - by Ryan Dyar
A summer twilight settling in over Washington’s Tatoosh Range in 2008. The Chinook word “tatoosh” translates into “breast” in English… as in boobs. As in boob mountains. It’s no wonder I’ve found my self returning to this area many times over the years… because boobs. Anyway, I just recently put out a video that details my entire creative workflow from field to post on a fairly involved photo. You can find it at www.ryandyar.com ❤️ Thanks for scrolling to come across my post… you’re awesome.
