Today I visited one of the most interesting and peculiar homes I’ve ever had the chance to see.
Imagine this being your living/dining room:

And when you give guests a tour of the rest of the house, it’s like this:

Talk about 60 years of special interest! The collector, Klaas Nanninga, does his own taxidermy, although he’s more specialised in creating displays these days. His house does not have fixed opening times, so you practically call him when in Groningen and ask if he’s around. Luckily for me he was!

Here's your yearly reminder NOT to purchase bat taxidermy products.
Because of their size, bats are notoriously difficult to find deceased from natural causes, and by the time they are found, the bodies have often already decomposed beyond value.
As sad as it is, it's true — As holidays approach, I know many people with an interest in these critters have the potential to receive gifts that are very unethical for the creatures they care about. Bats are killed for the sole purpose of displays like this as a soulless cash grab. Already, there are dozens of bat species that are threatened or endangered. It is not fair to them to support an industry that is actively trying to extinguish their life for decoration.
You can read more about this crisis here and here.

The United States is the largest known market for trade in these unique orange-and-black bats, who are native to South and Southeast Asia. Their populations are declining, and their biggest threat is overcollection for decor. In recent years the United States has imported many hundreds of painted bats directly from the wild.
In fact in just 12 weeks, a new study found 215 listings for painted woolly bats on Amazon, eBay, and Etsy alone. That's not OK.
And the problem isn't new — researchers have been raising conservation concerns about the hunting and sale of taxidermy bats as decor for almost a decade. Painted bats are especially vulnerable to collection because they only have one baby bat at a time, so they'll have trouble bouncing back once populations are even more depleted.

We have all been very busy in the store preparing for the redisplay our Natural History Gallery.
Here’s a lovely Flying Fox we needed to measure!
Flying Foxes are a type of megabat and can have a wingspan of up to 1.5metres! They are mainly vegetarian but can also eat insects.

Bats are so often thought of as scary, but we think he has the cutest face!

Yes, I have but it's a great idea to share it as far and wide as possible to spread awareness about the illegal trade of taxidermy bats.
And there's stuff you can do to help that isn't mentioned in the article. Here's a list from Lubee Bat Conservancy:
Stop purchasing taxidermy bats.
Inform sellers that these bats are not sustainably sourced, come from wild populations, and are killed solely for art/décor/ornamental purposes.  There is NO BREEDING of these species and it is directly leading to significant declines in bat populations which could ultimately lead to extinction.
